Alex Song: How Jack Wilshere tells me what to do during games

Written by Renzo on May 21, 2011 – 4:30

Arsenal Interactive - Squad SelectorJack Wilshere and Alex Song

He may only be nineteen but Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is already a big character according to team-mate Alex Song.

Speaking to BBC, the Cameroon International explained that the Englishman may still be a young man but he is very clever and always ready to talk to the other players, if required.

Song revealed that his midfield colleague tells him when he is to drop back rather than pushing forward as he revealed that even though everyone is full of praise for Wilshere’s first season as a regular he still works very hard to improve and that this shows that he possesses the needed winning mentality.

Loaned out to Bolton Wanderers last season, the PFA Young Footballer Of The Year immediately secured a regular place in Arsene Wenger’s starting eleven after returning at Arsenal and was one of the most consistent players for the Gunners during the soon-to-end campaign.

On Wilshere, Song said:

Jack is a big character. He’s still young but as I said he’s very clever. When you’re on the pitch, you need to talk to help your partners and he’s done very well.

Sometimes when I push forward, he says, ‘no Alex, try to drop back a little bit’. We just try to talk to help each other – which works very good. I think this guy is very clever, quick, good on the ball and is just 19.

He doesn’t want to say ‘today everyone talks about me, so I won’t work harder’. Every day in training it’s like a new day for him.

I’ve never seen him walk in training. I think that’s very good because when you have the mentality like that it’s the winning mentality. England have a good future with him.

  • Jason says:

Song and Wilshere is so much for us in the midfield. They are the one who keep the possession and fight for the ball. Despite scoring goals, their contribution is never less than the goal scorers upfront. Hope that both of them can get us finish in a much better position. =)

  • true gooner says:

Its good to hear the guy’s do comunicate but song still needs to work on his distribution and anticpation. I have never realy rated song certainly not world class but he does try and he never hides so he has some qualities. Still a liability.

  • olas says:

    song abeg no vex

  • carmelo pace says:

about song these few lines,I hope that the coming season song will be deployed as an central defender alongside vermealen, and djouroo and kosielney the fullbacs

  • barry the gooner says:

i wish wiltshire would tell Song to get another club. The guy is paceless and because of this is constantly having to foul people.Does he ever CREATE anything bring in felipe melo get some REAL protection for our back 4 and see the difference!

    • Davi says:

Song was our most consistent and important player in the two seasons previous to this one. I really cannot understand why people don’t appreciate him. Paceless?! Doesn’t create anything?! You have no clue.
And you don’t like song because he gives away fouls, but you think melo would be the answer to that? He’d get 5 red cards next season if he joined arsenal. The guy loses it all the time, and he’s done nothing for juventus – why would you want that guy over song?

    • Tacklr says:

Get a life, Barry. You want Melo, a guy who stamps on people’s legs without a second thought. Song had a poor second half, because of the natural Arsenal injuries, but he’s way better than all those DM’s include Ramirez, Fletcher, Melo, Lass, Sergi Biscuits and that one in your 5-aside football team.

  • Andy says:

They are both amazing players, Song is progressing really well as is Wilshere. Imagine if he improves his goal threat as well :O

  • realistic tony says:

Great to hear that Jack is working hard, the guy will be a legend with an attitude like that.
Someone did need to tell song to stay back, he was venturing far too forward at times, leaving our leaky defense even more exposed.

  • Goonertrice says:

Barry’s right. Can u honestly say that Song is in the same class as vieira, pires, or even flamini or lass. We need someone with pace who can quickly come back to cover our defence. We need a warrior who takes no shit from the opponent.

  • Amorozo says:

I can’t understand people who criticize song that much he has been our most valuable asset last season and this season while most of our players did not perform and other plagued by injuries. The guy deserve credit because he played with his heart while most our players this seasons did not. I believe that if we get two good defenders and one striker who can score goals it will boost our moral and will encourage the likes of song and wilshere to be more effective. My other point is what on earth the likes of Bendtner, Chamack, Denilson, Squillaci, Loisisky still doing in our team get rid of them , generate money and buy new players such as Hazard, Cahill, Samba, scott parker even tevez if he wants to join the team that plays beautiful football

  • kayzone says:

our mid field has always been mor compact and mobile with song and jack together. every body knows what jack will be for arsenal in the next two yrs and song can be just as much. our season would ve been better if wenger had deployed song alonside kolscieny instead of the paceless n clueless squilacci whiledenilson culd ve deputized for song in midfield.

  • lee says:

The main problem is that we have no backup for song which means he must play 40 games a season and everyone can see it takes its toll on him. I bet hesphenomenal during the first half of next season but unless we get someone who can give him a break every now and then he will run out of steam

  • Mark says:

    nice to hear.
    arsenal has leaders.
and the group will continue to develop and improve their leadership
