Carl Jenkinson is Arsenal’s first summer signing and although he played in every position at the back, his favourite role is that of right back.

Speaking to Arsenal Player, the 19-year old started by showing his delight at joining the club he supports, confessing how words can’t really described how he feels as the Gunners are renowned for being a great team, with a great history.

Asked about his favourite position, the youngster revealed that he played as centre back at youth level before being shifted to right back, which is ultimately his preferred position as it allows him to surge forward and help the offensive department.

Incidentally, Jenkinson also played as left-back and as a holding midfielder in his career, meaning that he will offer manager Arsene Wenger plenty of solutions when the Frenchman will have to take a decision on how to utilise his new squad member.

On joining Arsenal, he said:

[How it feels?] It’s amazing, really, words can’t really describe how it feels if I’m totally honest with you. Being an Arsenal fan, as well, it’s an amazing thing for me, I’m really excited, over the moon about it.

Arsenal is a massive club, worldwide, it’s a huge club, it’s a club I wanted to play for. The club speaks for itself, it’s a huge club and it’s a pleasure to now be a part of it.

I played during my youth team times a lot at centre back, slowly moving to right back, becoming my main position because I felt I always had more to give as I like to get forward, help attacking-wise as well.

I think I played six games for Charlton last season as left-back as well so I played all across the backline and even before I played in central midfield as well.

So I guess I’m quite versatile you could say, sometimes that doesn’t work to your advantage because you want to be in your main position but it’s a good thing for a manager I guess when one of his players can play in a number of positions.

[But] my main positions is right back, I can play in other positions but I like to think I’m an attacking-minded full-back, I like to get forward as well as defend.
