Malaysia XI vs Arsenal, 0-4: Full time analysis and player ratings

The Gunning Hawk - ForumArsenal Asia Tour, 2011

The Game

It might as well be only pre-season but today’s game has yet again demonstrated how easy it is for “new” players to settle down at Arsenal.

Carl Jenkinson and Ryo Miyaichi in the first half, Armand Traore and Emmanuel Frimpong in the second showed that even though they are, well, you know, like “new signings”, they were not shy to keep the ball, get involved and do well against a stubborn Malaysia XI side.

What was important to understand from this game and what will be important to understand as pre-season unfolds is first of all who will take over from Gael Clichy on the left wing and also where Ryo Miyaichi, Gervinho, Marouane Chamakh and Carlos Vela will fit in the offensive department.

Defensively, we had very little to do but I must say I was impressed with the fitness level of Jenkinson, confirming what Thomas Vermaelen said to Arsenal Player. The former Charlton Athletic man was indeed very quick to recover when caught on the back foot showing good pace and great determination. What this means for Emmanuel Eboue I don’t know but it seems more and more likely for Carl to be Bacary’s backup on the right.

In midfield, Jack and Aaron were sharp in the first half, especially the Welshman who produced a couple of good assists with Emmanuel Frimpong and Tomas Rosicky also doing well in the second. To be said is that Denilson was taken on after twenty minutes on the pitch. Granted, he made a terrible mistake with his first touch and was dispossessed minutes later but if not injured, replacing him like that was not nice to do.

And we of course were lethal – when needed – in the offensive department. Marouane Chamakh – the only player who disappointed me today – looked lazy and uninterested but the rest did well, including back-from-loan Carlos Vela who scored one, could have added two more and produced two assists showing that he is sharp and ready to go. Learn to use that right foot Carlos and more goals will follow.

Anyway, it’s nice to have football back and it’s nice to be back rating players. I’m still rusty so take it easy if your favourite player was not rated as high as you expected.

As always, whether you agree with my ratings or not, submit your own at Arsenal Interactive and make sure to share them on Twitter and Facebook.

Player Ratings

Szczesny: 6 – Not much to do for the young Pole but was ready to tip it over for a corner a Safiq Rahim attempt.

Jenkinson: 7,5 – Well done, Carl. Did impressively well on the right, blocking Kunalan A/L Subramaniam whenever the 24-year old surged forward and I also liked his involvement when we were on the attack, creating space for his team-mates. Granted, he was caught on the back foot a couple of times but he’s new, I’m sure he will learn.

Koscielny and Vermaelen: 6 / 6,5 – The two started at the back but in all honesty they had very, very little to do. Having said that, it’s great to see Thomas back in the side and eager to impress as the brilliant 23rd minute tackle showed.

Gibbs: 6 – So and so from Kieran. I’m still not 100% confident of his defensive skills and considering Armand was a better player on the day, it will be nice to see what Arsene decides when the going gets tough.

Song: 6,5 – Made a number of good runs going forward and good distribution of the ball.

Wilshere: 6,5 – Looked sharp from the first minute Jack. Gave very little to the opposition in midfield, won the penalty and assisted Theo in the first half who went on to miss the chance.

Ramsey: 7,5 – Extremely lively. Kept his cool to give us the lead after five minutes, assisted his team mates including the one for Theo’s second and went close to score a second after meeting Vela’s pass in the second half.

Miyaichi: 6,5 – Expectations were high and he didn’t disappoint considering it was his first game. Quick feet, great footwork, nice tricks and not shy to help defensively and fight for the ball.

Walcott: 7 – Not the best of starts for Theo as he missed a good chance early on but recovered well, chipping the goalkeeper for our second and then delivering a brilliant ball who Chamakh opted not to chase.

Chamakh: 5 – The only one who disappointed. Slow on the ball, slow to understand his team mates’ intentions and lazy to meet crosses coming from Ryo and Theo. You need to wake up Marouane if you don’t want to end up like Nicklas.

(Subs)
Mannone: 6 – Unless I missed others, he only made one easy save towards the end of the game.

Sagna: 6 – Came in after when the game started to slow down but nonetheless he did well, making himself available when we attacked from the right.

Squillaci and Djourou: 6 – Like the other two, not much to do for the Frenchman and the Swiss although Johan made a mistake in the 88th minute that gifted a chance to the local side but luckily we survived.

Traore: 7 – Impressive. I admit I am not a big fan of Armand and of course this is only pre-season so there will be time to judge but based on today’s game, if I had to choose between him and Kieran for the left wing, my vote will be for the Frenchman.

Nasri: 6,5 – Lively, although he looked uninterested in certain moments, could be just my imagination. Great work in the 69th minute, setting Carlos Vela up who hesitated and made a number of interesting runs in the last part of the game.

Rosicky: 6,5 – The one to assist Carlos Vela for our third, went close in the 80th minute after the Mexican turned provider and of course scored the easy fourth which sealed the game.

Denilson: No Vote – I’m curious to see what Arsene has to say about such a bizarre move, replacing the Brasilian after only 20 minutes on the pitch. He didn’t look injured, that’s for sure.

Frimpong: 6,5 – A monster and I’m sure he will feature more and more this season. Not too good when he pushed forward but when he needed to do what he does best, holding the midfield, he was impressive.

van Persie: 6,5 – Quiet game by his standard but was still dangerous like in the 80th minute when he did exceptionally well on the left, delivering a cross for Vela who set-up Tomas Rosicky.

Arshavin: 6,5 – Dick Advocaat was right after all, not a 90-minute man is Andrey. I completely forgot he was on the pitch, honest, yet when he woke up he did just what he’s so good at, doing all the dirty work for Tomas who easily slotted it in.

Vela: 7 – Delicious assist for Aaron Ramsey in the 51th minute, made no mistake seven minutes later finishing with his trademark chip but wasteful in front of goal in the 69th minute as he wanted to finish a move in style. Again turned provider this time for Tomas Rosicky on minute 80, concluding a very good performance as the Mexican, yet again, doesn’t disappoint.

    • Davi says:

It’s not just Frimpong. Lansbury and Coquelin are there as well.

  • Davi says:

I can’t say whether traore is the answer this year, but I honestly think he deserves just as much consideration as gibbs. From what I’ve seen he has just as much to offer, maybe more. As with Gibbs, it’s just a question of whether he is ready now or later.

  • Unbeaten.49 says:

I couldn’t watch the game, but according to the player ratings, it was a great exhibition from the team.

  • Thorough says:

It is all in the desire. Barcelona, the world best team at the moment, are willing to spend 80million on their 2main targets Sanchez and Fabregas, while Arsena, who havent won even a wooden spoon in six years, are footdragging about paying a combined fee of 29million for the two best defenders in the premier league that are outside the top four. It is all in the desire. Success always goes to who wants it more!!!

    • Jenkinson says:

By the ‘two best defenders in the Premier League’ I presume you mean Ferdinand and Vidic, or maybe John Terry.
If you are referring to Samba and Cahill – the former isn’t good enough and there are attitude as well as ability question marks about Cahill. And who says we need two CB’s?
      Be patient.

      • frog says:

he said “outside the top four” ill be in the forum.

  • Nikko says:

I think Denilsons time is up, que Frimpong! Ryo was great, fights for the ball, CarlJ seems okay. Will get better with experience, I think he’s a better signing than the 15m ManUre paid for Jones! Vela, this kid needs a chance, he didnt get it at WBA. He has class. Walcott is getting better too. And if Cesc stays another season I say Ramsey needs to learn from him while he can. Fabregas class is in Ramsey, just needs time to get out!

Still need a CB. Cmon Wenger! We are nearly there!

  • jude says:

pls let denilson go he not good pls

  • Doc Brody says:

    DENILSON EXPLINATION:

The comment by Wenger was that Denilson had a little issue (aka small injury) in practice yesterday and that 20 minutes was all he wanted him to play. He was actually thinking about not playing him at all.

That is not an exact quote but you can check the post match interview video with Wenger at Arsenal.com

  • dan says:

Interesting that you mention Marouane needs to awaken before he’s off like Bendtner, Bendtner has been with us for seven years.

Wenger is no longer a club manager, he is a global transfer market visionary and should go to work for UEFA under Platini.

  • Haris says:

Can Miyaichi play for us this season?

Carl was fantastic and I prefer Traore on the left. Great match.

  • Bonza says:

I would only make a few more changes to the 25 man squad (over 21’s). There would be 4 more departures, Almunia, Denilson, Bendtner (all permanent) Botelho (loan).

There would be 3 players brought in, Mertesacker, Vertonghen , Parker. If Fabianski is not ready to start the season, then i would bring in a 4th player, Marcus Hanneman.

If we lose Cesc or Nasri or both, then and only then would i consider more offensive players. Any of Schneider, Hazard, Mata. I have to say, if we were able to sell Cesc to Barca for £30m plus Affelay i would take that then we could buy any 1 of the other 3 just in case Nasri left.

  • evans says:

i think our team are improving. And beside hw about gervinho

  • dats says:

Some players played 3/4 of the game, some a 1/2 and others just a 1/4. With 23 players in the squad and all making an appearance one player who came on as a substitute would have to be replaced. This happened to be Denilson – I really doubt whether there is any significance in this.

  • spb says:

traore is representing senegal, not france…

  • Rockfletch3000 says:

I watched a stream of the match, not too bad a start..

I agree with Traore edging in front of Gibbs, he’s faster and stronger on the ball. Not sure why Denilson has gone to be honest, and although Vela looked ‘bothered’ today he normally isn’t and so I would happily sell him now. At this stage it’s laughable that he still can’t use his right foot being at a top four club, he’s gotta go surely.

    • Braulio says:

You may need to pay a bit more attention to Vela. He’s using his right foot regularly. In his 80th minute pass to Rosicky (talked about in the article) he used his right, for example. Besides, the Mexican scored regularly last year when he was given the chance to play (PL and CL)

      Traore for LB, btw.

  • chris says:

First of all i congratulate the boys for the job weldone but Wenger should add cahill and chris samba to the squad to help build our defence strongly, likely we may have six contenders for top four this season bcos if you followed arsenal match last season almost our errors are from defence plz

  • gooner92 says:

so many arsenal fans were calling for vela to be sold and i constantly said if hes giving a chance he will shine. for me he was the best player today bar far and he needs to be giving a chance….reminds me of a eden hazard type player, dont believe me just watch both of them on youtube, if velas given the chance we may not need eden hazard.

    • Geo says:

The only thing Vela can do is hope Wenger gives him a chance, and that he plays with all his heart, and leaves nothing behind. Only then can we say Vela is worthy, as of now, he is the potential star; or the “ballerina” bust. Either way it was a fun game to watch, and Traore seems like the better option. Gibbs should be loaned out to a EPL team. MOTM RAMBO

  • Thomas says:

Vela needs to finally be given a chance. I really liked what I saw from him today.

  • HUnter says:

Vela was very good today. The only player in the side with better off the ball forward movement at the moment is RVP. I am sincerely hoping he is above Chamakh in the pecking order up front.

If we are going with “internal solutions” for the left back position there is no doubt that it’s got to be Traore. Even though he was injured for a long time at Juventus, the time he spent there has taught him a bit. His positioning is much better and he was rarely caught out. I also like that he appears to be built a bit sturdier than Gibbs. I have yet to see him get nudged off the ball like Gibbs does (and Clichy did as well).

Chamakh will never be like Bendtner because quite frankly Bendtner is an egotistical jack ass with very little skill to back up his big mouth. Chamakh did not have a good game today but based on how he started last season we know he has more in his locker. He could be very useful if we are going to stick to the 4-3-3 as a point man with RVP and Vela/Theo on the wings. We don’t use his strengths often and so he drops much too deep to be useful. When he is on we need him on the shoulder of the last defender occupying them and causing havoc from aerial crosses. For some reason he plays much more timid with us than he does when he plays for Morocco. Arsene needs to unleash him a bit more.

Overall a good game for preseason and I am looking forward to seeing how the season unfolds. We still need a CB and we still need a striker and a goalkeeper in my opinion. Let’s see what Arsene does with the rest of the transfer window.

    Overall

  • Gungal says:

Barcelona are in such debt that they couldn’t make payroll earlier this year. Surely we don’t want Arsenal to end up in the same desperate straits? Our club is fiscally sound while Barca, Man U, Chelsea and Man City are not… We live in a crazy world on the brink of economic collapse and yet everyone insists on buying what they cannot afford, and that goes for individuals, clubs and even countries…

  • Zan81 says:

Malaysian Gooner commenting here. Was at the stadium last night and my top 3 surprises were Ryo, Jenkinson and Traore.

I was seated on Ryo’s side of the pitch in the first half. I don’t know if he thought if our fullback was rubbish, but the Japanese kid was kept going at him and tormented him the entire 45. Granted, some tricks didn’t work, but it’s refreshing to see someone in an Arsenal shirt on the flanks willing to take on defenders head on, something we’ve not had since Overmars (who incidentally I watched when the Gunners toured here back in ‘99). He’s exactly the type of player Arsenal needs to excite the fans and also to drum up lucrative support from the Asian fanbase.

Jenkinson’s decision-making was spot on and looked comfortable on the ball, which is a hallmark of every modern Arsenal player. His defending looks simple, solid and effective, but it will take a few more games to see whethere or not he’s going to usurp Eboue for the RB slot. And yes, Kunanlan (who was up against Jenkinson) was our best player by a country mile and his pace did look to trouble Jenkinson a couple of times, but the former Charlton man managed to recover each time. I have high hopes for this lad.

Armand Traore came in at half time and did a lot more than Gibbs in the first. He was willing to take on players and offered a better overlapping runs going forward. I share the same opinion as the writer, I’m not convinced on Gibbs’ readiness. On this display, it does look like the Frenchman is slightly ahead of Gibbs at this moment.

Overall, it was a fantastic exhibition for us Malaysians to see the way the beautiful game is supposed to be played. It was heart wrenching at times to see our national team players getting passed off the pitch, but we’ll take it as a lesson learned and hopefully help us with our Olympic qualifiers against rivals, Singapore. It’s country first for me, but as an Arsenal fan, it was great to see the team in action once again. I hope they will return to our shores once again, but this time, please don’t make it a 12-year gap!!

    • MommyGooner says:

I was there too, and yes, please don’t make us wait another 12 years for the next visit!
      Good review, thanks.

  • Paul says:

Watched the match live from the stadium and agree with the ratings. Just to give the Arsenal fans a view from the terrace:-

    The new signings-
Jenkinson – Solid but not spectacular sums him up.Could be due to him facing S Kunalan, who had plenty of pace to burn so he had to sit back more.
Miyaichi – While I’ve read a lot of reviews raving on the Japanese performance, I felt he was still very very raw. His decision making needs to improve as evidenced when there was once he was through on goal and could have been one-on-one with the keeper but he chose to do a Cruyff turn and pass it back to the middle. But I must add he made up for it with a lot of spirit harrying the defenders at every opportunity.

    The left backs-
Traore definitely looks a better player than Gibbs with his blistering pace. There were times the Malaysian fans mistook him for Walcott. Its only after we see his No.30 jersey we realized it was Traore. It’ll be interesting to see how this will pan out!

    The midfielders
Unfortunately for us, Denilson is still Denilson. OK in possession but capable of suicidal mistakes. The rest of the midfielders looked tidy. Rosicky was impressive with his tiki-taka or one-twos.

    Vela
Impressive. He has very good close control and was always looking to run off the shoulder of the defender looking for channels.Hope to see him step up his development this season.

All in all it was a good performance by Arsenal. But we must remember that this is a friendly against a Malaysian side due to face Liverpool,Chelsea in friendlies and Singapore in a Olympic qualifier. We still need to add 3-4 really quality players if we are to really challenge for the title.

    Gunner for life.

    .

All in all it was a good game but this we must be reminded that this is only a friendly against a Malaysian team due to face Liverpool and Chelsea for friendlies in the next two weeks with a crucial Olympic qualifier the next two weeks. Bigger tests awaits!

  • asian gunner says:

I was in the stadium. Honestly, I’m surprised why Denilson is even on this tour. Same usual pattern of play..side passing, back passing…even once put the defense under unnecessary pressure due to his lack of attention. The sooner he goes, the better for all.

  • Gunner84 says:

the highlights of the goals are available on Arsenal.com

  • PETER EGERE. Aka de pa-senal says:

IfGibbs is the true replacement for clichy, wenger should have a rethink, gibbs is not fully ready to take that possion. Traore is an experiment that may back fire, some time i wonder if wenger is aware that we have lost so many soul due to heart break, others are preparing to strenghting their team but he sitting there thinking on how to make profit

  • william kkkk says:

Hope Ryo gets his work permit.. very nice to see someone like C.Ronaldo/Neymar is in our ARSENAL

i mean someone who likes to do tricks, his Pace?? amazing

  • Gevorg says:

Chris, while we are on player ratings, do you plan to publish player average ratings for last season for midfield and forward players as well? Or have I missed those?
