Hangzhou Greentown vs Arsenal, 1-1: Full time analysis and player ratings

Written by Chris on July 16, 2011 – 20:30

The Gunning Hawk - ForumArsenal Asia Tour, 2011

The Game

Arsenal’s two-game Asia Tour came to an end this afternoon as the Gunners could only manage a draw against an extremely determined Hangzhou Greentown side.

Today, Arsene opted to start with a complete different team than the one that started last Wednesday’s game and it was the local side that enjoyed most of the possession in the first part of the game, going close to take the lead after only two minutes with goalkeeper Vito Mannone brave to deny them.

We had chances, especially with Robin van Persie but it was Sebastian Vasquez who opened the scoring again showing how weak we are when we are to defend set-pieces.

According to my match notes, Sebastien Squillaci made three poor mistakes in three minutes between the 13th and 16th minute of the first half and clearly, this is outrageous. The way he lost his man in the 13th minute and the way he tried to win the ball was embarrassing to see, allowing the striker to go on and hit the post.

Luckily, in stoppage time, Carlos Vela yet again showed why he should be given more first-team chances as he abandoned the uncharacteristic right-wing position to drift in the centre and keep his cool to slot in the empty net.

The second half was better but we failed to hit the target. Theo Walcott on the right put himself in a number of very good positions but poor finishing and Jim Pengziang’s brave saves kept the score level.

Needless to say, we should not be happy with such a disappointing result but in all fairness you could see players who after 30 minutes were already tired and at this stage of the season it is more than understandable.

Carl Jenkinson and Ryo Miyaichi again did well on the right and left wing respectively with – unfortunately – Marouane Chamakh again bringing very little to the Arsenal offensive department. My message is the same as last Wednesday, he needs to wake up the Moroccan if he is to feature as much as he did last season.

As for the Kieran Gibbs vs Armand Traore “battle”, there isn’t much to say since the former featured in a half in which we had the upper hand and was one of the best players but he desperately needs to feature when we are under pressure defensively if we are to reach a stage where we can draw a conclusion on who, of the two, should be our regular left back.

To conclude, it will be very interesting to see how Arsene will deploy new-arrival Gervinho when the Ivory Coast International lands in London. Personally, today, I would have loved to see a 4-4-2 setup with Robin and Carlos up front, after all, the Mexican might as well be the so-called “poacher” we so much needed last season.

I mean call him lightweight, call him not good enough, call him whatever you want but fact is that he ends the Asia Tour with two goals in ninety minutes improving his already-impressive goal to minute ratio for the Gunners. Others end the tour with no goals under their name. Some food for thought there.

Player Ratings

Mannone: 6 – Good save in the first minute of the game and not sure he could have done better when we conceded as there was a slight deflection that forced him into a body block.

Squillaci: 3 – Terrible. Awful in the aforementioned 13th minute episode of the game, terrible with his head minutes later forcing Emmanuel Frimpong into conceding a set-piece in a dangerous area from which Greentown scored with the Frenchman too slow to react to the situation.

Djourou: 5,5 – Not at his best either. Sad the way the striker went past him in the first minute of the game and not very convincing in other periods of the game.

Sagna: 6 – Solid game from Bacary and good work to set up Samir in the 35th minute of the game.

Traore: 5,5 – Was better on Wednesday. Frankly, I don’t expect Armand to deliver straight away, he rarely featured for Juventus last season and will definitely need time to regain fitness.

Rosicky: 6 – Hot and cold in midfield. Was very lively in the first part of the game but missed some easy passes as the game progressed.

Frimpong: 6,5 – The way he won the ball in the 8th minute of the game shows what it means to have a strong figure in midfield. Unfortunately, I felt he was careless when having to distribute but in all honesty his job should be to hold, not to distribute.

Nasri: 7,5 – My man of the match. Brilliant run in the 23rd minute of the game but was unlucky to have his effort blocked, involved in the move ended with Robin’s acrobatic volley and went inches close to hit the target with a brilliant first-time effort in the 35th minute.

Arshavin: 6,5 – Another “Dick Advocaat” approved appearance from the Russian. Very quiet but when on the ball he was very good in creating space and of course the one to assist Robin in the move with which we levelled things up.

van Persie: 6 – Nothing to get too excited about although I was impressed with the way he helped the defensive department when needed. Offensively, he missed a couple of chances such as opting to chip the keeper in the 17th minute instead of unleashing his left foot.

Vela: 6,5 – Very lively, the Mexican. Easy goal, but needed a good first touch. Of course I’m not surprised he is performing so well in pre-season, he was as equally lively last year and the one before. Again, the decision is now in Arsene’s hands, will he opt for Marouane Chamakh or finally give a chance to the 22-year old?

(Subs)
Szczesny: No Vote – Unless I missed them, he made zero saves today.

Jenkinson: 7 – Excellent half from the former Charlton Athletic man as he made himself available whenever we were on the attack.

Koscielny and Vermaelen: 6 and 6,5 – As it was the case last Wednesday, these two had very little to do but I was again impressed by the sharpness of the Belgium International, less by the Frenchman who gifted a golden chance to the home team late on in the game.

Gibbs: 7 – Brilliant. Good effort blocked in the 56th minute of the game, more good work minutes later as he set up Aaron Ramsey and again involved in the 63rd minute on the left as he again found the Welshman.

Song: 6 – Made some mistakes Alex but an overall good performance in the middle of the pitch.

Wilshere: 6,5 – Brilliant start to the half, including a great run in the 54th minute ended up with Aaron Ramsey’s blocked effort. Faded a little in the final part of the game.

Ramsey: 7 – Could have done better in the aforementioned 54th minute move but was very lively in the middle of the pitch the Welshman. Let’s face it, if Cesc departs Samir will be used in a central position but it’s nice to have Aaron as a possible possible as well.

Miyaichi: 6,5 – We pushed more from the right so Ryo was rarely used but when he was called into action he was not shy to take on his man and create importance chances such as in the 77th minute when he did well to set up Theo who headed high.

Walcott: 6,5 – Granted, he missed a lot and a lot of chances but he put himself in very good positions and if he learns how to conclude we will have a devastating weapon on the right.

Chamakh: 5,5 – Not impressed. Although he was more determined than last Wednesday I still feel that he was the most disappointing player this week and needs to wake up. Quickly.

  • jason says:

He was a very good player before he came to Arsenal.

You cant really expect to much from him with his age and the fact that he never gets played with Djourou and Vermaelen first choice because their young.

  • Dave says:

Squillaci should never be allowed to play for us again. He should be released.

  • Breezy says:

Maybe we need to give Bendtner another chance, at this point he can’t be as bad as Chamakh. Anyway, I do think we need a good few signings to improve, the form this team showed towards the end of the season was close on relegation form.

  • james says:

i think miyachi and jenkinson have been very impressive so far in pre season, you can see they are both hungry to break into the team and are taking the oppurtunity. Chamakh is not very good however, his touch is very clumsy and often doesnt give the correct pass in the final third and is very unwilling to run at players and use his physicality. Vela is getting played out on the right and doing well considering he is clearly a left sided player or striker. Squillaci is hopeless we need atleast one centre back. Gibbs looks good, he has a better touch than clichy puts in better crosses and is less rash in the final third and can shoot better. I know its only pre season but we do need a few reinforcements. Im also getting frimpong on the back of my shirt this year, i hope he plays. Also wheres Diaby?

  • Don says:

Vela to start next season!!! Are you mad? This is a player who couldnt get a start for WBA.Too lightweight for premiership football. We need a LB Gibbs will get injured Traore is shit.Squillaci should never play for us again and Djourou is a 4th choice CB.We need two CB’s brought in pronto

    • gooner montreal says:

Don , to be honest , we have players nobody want and we cannot give away . arsene is arsene , he always pick up players at garage sale .

    • w2c says:

Granted vela didnt play much for WBA,i think its simply because he didnt fit roy’s plans of how he wants his football played- roy plays for points not for football. when used properly i think vela could be very good. I like vela, hes potentially a very exciting player and yea i would like to see him play more up front, not on the right wing – that was nonsense. it was like bendtner being brought on left wing so many times.

As for the Gibbs arguement, whos to say gibbs will definetly start left back? Traore’s final hurrah seems to be reaping the benefits of having been training in a country that prides itself on defense last season, something he has on Gibbs who has learned how to defend at Arsenal – going by todays goal and constant high lines obviously isnt very good. I dont think he can be called shit (granted i would like to see him play a premier league game).

Squillaci is brain dead, and I personally amnt gone on Djourou either. Players seem to glide past him as soon as there is a turn in pace… With defenders though… this is what they are dealing with when it is Arsenal train them to defend with ridiculously high lines.. they need to throw themselves at the ball rather than letting the balls drop

    • jason says:

I agree with you all he wants to do from what I see of him is chip the ball over the keeper the first chance he gets.

He doesnt play at any club hes loaned to and he does have a physical disadvantage in this very physical league.

We need a player like Adebayor to patner RVP.

  • dean smith says:

Squillaci he needs to fix up or go but the manager is not gonna do anything bout it
Rosicky: seems to go Hot and cold in alot
Chamakh works hard but need do mre in attack for sure
Djourou have not been impressive for a while even again England
Traore not sure bout him when defending
these are not 1st 11 so does it make it ok???????

  • gooner montreal says:

We are stuck with the like of Squillaci , Vela , Rosicky … and Arsenal will struggle again this year . These are the players nobody want and you cannot give away

  • billp79 says:

    Chris-
    Spot on with Squilachi…very poor
Djou was equally poor letting player get behind him regularly…maybe a combination of his playing partners in front and to the side…I think he’ll need more time on the training ground to prove himself (earning his place)..but he seems a bit nevous now.
Jencks looks a bit inexperienced yet…good speed and determination getting back into position, but I think a loan spell is in his cards….unfortunate because I don’t think that gibbs nor traore impressed either….WORRIES
If I’m not mistaken the fee kick hit Mannone on the chin, before the defenders watched the rebound being poked it…we were fortunate for the tie…3-0 would have been what we deserved at the break. I would expect Vela to put that one away so, just because he scored doesn’t impress me…his movement was ordinary and predicable.

the others put in a professional pre season match
Nasri had the look when lining up of ‘wtf am I doing here with the 2nd string’, but put in a good shift….perhaps looking for a few more pounds per week.
Greentown had speed to match us and it looked for a while we were content just to put in a few high balls to take advantage of their height…won’t work when we get home…so wtf again.
last year pre-season we had way better movement off the ball…this is very CONCERNING.
I don’t care how hot or how much rain…this game was very dissapointing

    So main concerns;
    1. Back-up GK if Fabs is not back in time for August.
    2. A left back….clearly pushing our outside backs up the field exposes our form and organization in the back
    3. A versatile defender who can play across the back (Sagna has no back up either).
…remember his red card last year…Eboue is not coverage).

    The rest we can manage as the offensive players can play across the field…as long as;
    1. We don’t have any long term injury concerns…or formation issues.
    2. I’d keep Miyachi and let Rosicky go…salary, age, versatility, injury…
    3. I”d give Frimpong more playing time and vela less..we are covered up front.

    • gooner montreal says:

this is arsenal , we have a clic-clac set of players , arsene will not change , in the mean time fan will have to endure the like of squillaci , rosicky .
an another lost year , and this time it is dangerous , we may not make the top four and that will be pretty much the end .

  • Dando says:

Regardless of opposition, regardless of pre season, playing 433 with the defense we currently have will be a recipe for disaster.

  • thomas says:

Let Vela leave! He deserves a team/fans that will play and support him. A mid table La Liga team would do him good.

    • reuben says:

He deserves support and respect but I’d rather see him stay at arsenal…

  • Soccer surf says:

Where is JET? Chamhak equals no! We have champions league soon we better get it together. We can’t handle another season of half ass attempts

    • AndyH says:

JETs playing with the youth team, saw him yesterday against my local team. Played well and scored one

  • tony says:

Squillaci is not fit for a team of Arsenals class n quality.
If you think Vela is just ordinary and lightweight, you might also want to understand that he executes better than Chamakh.
I think I would like a twin strike force of Bendtner and Vela, or RvP and Walcott. The first two combine very well up front. The second pair will complement each other on pace and execution.
I like Sagna’s commitment in tackles and defence, but I think he just can’t perform on big games. We always leak from his side. That’s where Eboue comes in. He has only disappointed in the Liverpool game, but last season, Barca were unable to create any opportunity on his wing in the first leg. Second leg was a disaster.
I think Rosicky should be sold off, and Arshavin should be used as a make-weight for the Juan Mata deal.
You know how it goes, you get paired with rubbish, you play like rubbish. I think that happened to Djourou. Last year, he was more tidy than Koscielny.
Ryo should stay around and AW should do more rotation to give playing time and help players regain and retain full fitness.
Oh, and I would actually prefer if we signed Metesacker other than Samba/Cahill. I think he’s more tactical and efficient.

    • Plev says:

Well done. You just proved to the world that you know absolutely nothing about football.

    • billp79 says:

Vela executes against 2nd rate teams…and when the score is already secure..Bendtner is similar…
Chamahks scoring sheet average is still better and against better opposition, plus he is an aerial threat
Vela has one move…chip the keeper.

      • Chris says:

Bill, please get your facts straight or you will be made a fool of, the two goals scored with WBA were far from “when the score is already secure” :)

        • billp79 says:

          I don’t recall that game?

          • Chris says:

That’s why I asked you to know the facts, he scored two vital goals when on loan with WBA, against Wolves and Stoke.

            • billp79 says:

yeah- I don’t particularly care what he does for OTHER teams.

              • Chris says:

Yes, that is why I asked you to do it else you will be criticised for saying he only scores “when the score is already secure” as of course it’s a false statement.

                • billp79 says:

only for arsenal…2-0 should be secure in my book..christ all you have to do practically is hoof it away.

                  • reuben says:

Pardon my ignorance. But how can you score ‘critical goals’ whent the only time you get on the field is when you’re already 3-0 up?

        • billp79 says:

Chris- I just got done watching his best goals you tubes…
          1. He scores 80% of the time when we have a 2 goal lead or more
          2. A lot of his goals were shown from the resrves or against pre-season meetings
          3. He move predomintly north south
          4. Most of the work was done by others (he tapped in).
          5. I saw no headers.

I have yet to see a video of him tracking back to tackle.

          :) sorry …foolish of me.

          • Chris says:

You sure you watched all Arsenal games of the last 2-3 years?

December 5, 2009, Arsenal – Stoke, 2-0, the second goal move started with Vela tracking ball and winning the ball in our own half, close to the corner flag.

            • billp79 says:

a number of video’s….it seems like the vela fans just keep adding to them from diffent angles to make them look better…
              lol
was it me or did we move the ball around effortlessly last year in preseason?
It’s like we have no off ball movement….

            • billp79 says:

              I’ll go looking for that specifically…opperative word….specific…singular

            • billp79 says:

Arshavan and Ramsey scored that day….not Vela

some context please…were we defending a corner, did he lose the ball and was getting it back?

              • Chris says:

Where did I say he scored? I remember the game, clearly you don’t, hence the reason why your facts are so wrong about this player.

Why do you need evidence? If you want evidence you can easily head over to http://www.arsenal.com/match-menu/3150241/first-team/arsenal-v-stoke-city?tab=report and the part saying “The second goal arrived just as Stoke were starting to seriously look for the equaliser. The move started way back when Vela slid in to win the ball eventually it worked its way to Ramsey, who exchanged passes with Arshavin before firing home from the edge of the area. It was the third goal of his Arsenal career.”.

                • billp79 says:

ok we need to step back a little…
Of course ALL players play some defense….I’m saying RvP and Chahmak do it more…even Walcott and Arshavan…
All 4 have made more substantial contributions to the team than Vela…circumstance/ timing does not seem to be in his favor…of course he is in the same boat as Bendtner

I have faith that Wenger put him out on loan for a reason and that is also why Gervihno is comming in…most likely because Arshavan and Rosicky are at the magic number… 30

He is good for WBA or another setup…but I don’t think ours…surely you don’t think one game makes a player CV?

                  Opinions

                  • Chris says:

No I’m sorry, you should take a step back not me :)

You made two statements in this article:

                    a. when has Carlos vela ever made a tackle?

                    b. Vela executes against 2nd rate teams…and when the score is already secure..

I proved both your statements wrong, the other players you mentioned do it more because they play more, in the meantime, RvP, Chamakh and Arshavin leave Asia with zero goals, Carlos leaves with two.

                    • billp79 says:

stop it …your comments are not ‘more absolute’ than mine nor visa versa…

You pointed out one tackle and sighted the other 20% of his goal tally…not much of an arguement….

question then….why are we signing more young strikers?

I’ll answer that….becuse we train them and sell thm like Carlos….at a profit.

                    • Chris says:

You asked “when has Carlos vela ever made a tackle?”

And I answered, that’s why I pointed out at one tackle. The reason why we sign young players is because our manager believes in them.

      • Gunner12 says:

First of all…..I don’t think that 2 – 0 is a “secure result” (and it seems that, for Arsenal, even a 4 – 0 result is not secure); actually I think that its the most reicky result in football, why?, because you get pretty confident that you have a 2 goal difference but then bamm they score you in the 80th min and so the rival team for sure will be pressing and pressing to score the second and it’ll be pretty difficult to hold them.
Second, in a such a competitive league as de EPL is, goal difference is actually a difference, it can make you be in third or second; so, I don’t care if Vela or anyone scores when we are already 3 – 0, as long as our goal diference is way better than our rivals.

  • thundertinygooner says:

Miyaichi is unlikely to be granted a work permit and unless Eboue leaves Jenkinson will not be Sagna’s deputy .Vela is too lightweight for the Premiership and Theo is way too erratic. This game showed how good Nasri is,how poor Squillaci is and how little attacking quality we have if RVP has an off-day (and he will be injured for 4 months)

  • Soccer surf says:

So JET plays with us LAST pre season and has a good year but doesn’t even make it this year while an 18 year old who won’t get a work permit comes. Why nit give JET a chance to show what he can do? Chamhak isn’t up to it and bentdner is gone. Give him a chance wenger and sign a cb Now so they can start to gel

  • eman14 says:

Seriously enough with calling Carlos Vela “lightweight”
He is there to score, make some spacing, and create.
He does all of that period. May not be the way you like
It. But it gets done. The #s do not lie.

    • reuben says:

I completely agree. I don’t understand why people have such a negative view of Vela.

For me he was good. He made good runs, he came deep to get the ball. I don’t know if many realise but many of our chances in this match and the last come from Vela’s involvement in the build-up play.

He did his job today. He didn’t have to be in the centre when RVP had his shot saved. Give him some credit people.

      • billp79 says:

when has carlos vela ever made a tackle?

        • Hunter says:

Ok, once and for all for the people who keep calling him lightweight. He is 5′10″ and around 170 lbs. That’s bigger than Cesc, Rosicky, Arshavin, Nasri, Sagna, Clichy, Traore. Obviously you don’t know much about the player.

Once he get a proper run of games then you can pass judgement. If the only time the manager brings you on is on the last 20 minutes, then chances are that’s when you are going to score and unfortunately that’s when we have a lead. Once he gets a chance ot start games and play 70 or 80 minutes then you can make a judgment. Until then get off his back. Most of you complaining about him are the same ones who wanted to keep giving Bendtner, Denilson, Diaby, etc. chance after chance.

    • dink_arnold says:

i’m just curious, i remember reading that arsene wouldn’t let vela play with mexico in the gold cup.
wouldn’t this have given him more necessary experience and confidence? to be on a winning side and maybe score some goals?
anyone know arsene’s reasoning on this? did it have anything to do with the troubles he got himself into when travelling with mexico last year?

  • rudy says:

i agree with a 4-4-2. vela can be our chicharito of sorts. but i still hope walcott could play more centrally in near future. squillaci is done for. chamack has mental blockage similar to bendtner and previously adebayor, after rvp’s return. its a tough problem to solve.

  • SoCal_Gun says:

I know it was just pre-season, I know wholesale changes were made at half time, and I know that the team played better in the second half…..

BUT, another goal was conceded at a set piece and the team didn’t put away an inferior opponent

this doesn’t bode well for the upcoming season. I hope Arsene sees it this way (which I know he probably doesn’t)

  • Gunny says:

    Bedtime, boys…

  • ruelando says:

Really think Ryo , Jenkinson, Frimpong, Traore, and Vela did a real good job.

Ryo when given the ball looked for is supporting players and did well in closing down. I am really hoping that Wenger will apply for a permit for him and he will be successful

Jenkinson looks real tall on is side of the field and very hardworking, speedy and at times skillful he got in a few scares and i am still puzzled why our attacking players do not attack the Six yard lines. I figure its time for Eboue to go and give this young blood the back up role.

Frimpong quite aggressive and strong but a needs fitness

Traore is in the same boat as Frimpong and i think he may even be better suited for the left back more than gibbs

Why people continue to pressure Vela, if he hac as much chance as Theo had today it would have been 4- 1 to the Arsenal

  • Cameron says:

I wasn’t too disapointed. Doesn’t seem a lot has changed. We still look weak on the counter, Gibbs looked better then I expected. I still believe we need a center back, but Frimpong looks better then denilson so getting a combative midfielder doesn’t seem as important.

Walcott came out saying he wanted to be a striker and play down the center. He will really have to work on his finishing. He had some great chances and didn’t manage to put any away.

  • jason says:

Okay i normally predict the right posistions in the premier league each season.

    So here i go.

For me Arsenal still have the quality to finish top 4 tho something tells me they with struggle this time.

I dare say i normally wait till the start of the season to predict the winner but i think Man u will win the league, City in 2nd and chelsea in 3rd.

Man U are a example of what a team needs to win the premier league a strong spine to the team, physical players, strength in deph and experience.

Our problems are centre backs are poor, our goal keeper is young, our central midfielder and striker are always injured, we lack height, physical players which is why we get so many injuries and as always experience.

They said the same thing last season and the season before. We were predicted on both occassions to fall out of 4th.

Whilst our performances have been far from convincing, I won’t buuy into the common trite if I were you.

That said, we do need some hard work to keep up this seasson and yes, we do need to buy a couple more to stay solid.

all you that disregard vela are just hopeless, he is an amazing player and it is someone like him that can light our season on. did you not see hernandez?. Id rather watch vela continue to chip and miss then bendtner chew gum
If we are going to win this year it will be because of Vela, guaranteed

    • reuben says:

Hahahaha. you know how people say ‘lol’ i actually laughed :D

But I totally agree. Vela for me is excellent. he has great movement off the ball, he creates and he can finish. We would have won today if Vela was in Walcott’s wasteful shoes…

No18 in Gunner always BAD ……you can found out C18, S18(Silvester)…and now S18.
Since the first day he arrive Arsenal, we cannot found out the best performance in EPL, he’s slow montion, no speed, no head ball skill….I really cannot found out any answer he can stay in EPL or high level competition.
No one or no team will need him, let him go by free…..PLEASE.

  • nassir says:

My concern is only on defence where we were very weak last season and the manager aparently is saying that our defence is good enough when he himself admitted in may that to concede 42 goals is not good enough and there will definately be additions in defence during the summer.

From the vibes that the manager is throwing around it looks aparently he has no plans of adding a central defender and to say the truth that would be awfull. If just how easily we conceded on a set piece yesterday is not enough to convince him and the whole of last season how easily we ship in goals on set pieces cannot change his mind then we are dead.

If on his gut he doesn’t want to buy a central defender, then he should just buy it for the fans it wont harm him and for goodness sake Squillachi is Zero, he is not worth any pound the club is paying him and if the plan is to wait for the last minute of the transfer window and go and get us another Squillachi then he better not sign. Top teams like Man U, Chelsea, Barca, Real Madrid have three quality defensive midfielders on there books @ Arsenal we have one, only Song, and that is not a problem to our manager, and we still want to compete we this teams? How i wonder! Please Arsene just get us what the team needs, a central defender and a quality defensive midfielder period. Gervinho was not very urgent but a central defender and a defensive midfielder is absolutely paramount. JUST DO IT OR SHIP OUT we are tired of this mery-go-round.

    • santori says:

Cback agreed. We need 4. TV, Djourou, Kos +1

Squillaci should make way for a better senior man.

DM- I’m not so sure. We have Song and Frimpong. I think it is also within reason to look into Koscielny as a possible back up with his pace and reading (but only if we have that new Cback)

LB : I am a bit apprehensive. I would prefer someone who can cover just in case the young players do not have a Wilsehre season. Pref someone who can play in another position but plenty of esperience playing LB (if need be ). Bastos comes to mind.

  • Edgems4 says:

    • billp79 says:

Teams are spending crazy money on players right now…

why does Mcity need so many …where is fair play?
are they going to have a reserve team full of multi-millionare players?

If they strike a deal for 10 times the going rate for shirts or stadium rights (compared to us or MU/ Chelsea) is that really considered fair by FIFA? because someone with a conflict of inteterest decides to offer the money?

what do they have like 45 players right now?

Is Torres or Carrol realy worth that much?…no wonder our players are asking for more…

Seems like anyone who wants a raise has their agent say that we are interested…

    • santori says:

We don’t have the deep pockets of City (BTW, I am for a cap on total number of players eligible per season, 30 should be sufficient)

We need to await the feeding frenzy of the bigger spending teams to abate before we can see better value in some areas.

As an example @Cback. Chelsea are scouting for a new Cback. If they land their man, the most likely departure on their end would be Alex.

@6′2, grit , experience, good ats et pieces, cannon of a shot (useful for free kicks in which we have had paltry returns in recent times), I would say he is worth waiting for…especially since he will prb price half of the valuation of Cahill.

Similarly, I believe that whilst Wenger put his foot down on Nasri (absorbing a potential 13m loss) because he has little leverage, he is playing a cunning game with Fabregas by demonstrating he will keep quality (Nasri) at expense of profit and loss. I do believe there is an agreement between them whereby if Fab wants to leave, Wenger will not get in his way (proviso of course Barca meets the minimum valuation)

Therefore there is a 15% chance IMO of Fab leaving. If he does leave, MOntolivo is an interesting target for us (being in last year of contract). he will add balance to midfield as he can both playmake and act as DM. But you won’t prob see true value for him until the window nears its end in August.

There are however some players which I believe wenger could look into now.

Bastos is one. He can cover as insurance for us in LB whilst not impeding the opportunities for Gibb and Traore to break out, being that he can easily deploy on either wing of midfield for us (as he does with Lyon). I don’t think he will cost anywhere more than Gervinho.

Panic buying at this point is a fools game. I’m not saying that Wenger will spend in these areas but I am saying that there is opportunities which will open up as the window draws down. After all, remember what the Spuds got VDV for and when?

  • summerbreez says:

The first half explained why we ended up forth we could have been 3 down by the first 12 minuets we were weak we couldn’t even attack as for the goal well that was luck if this is the team to face the premier chip we will be lucky to finish in the tenth position i was truly disappointed the second half was save the face job but did they succeed ? no not at all as they didn’t win the game

there is a lot of work to be don and more players needed to establish Arsenal as a force to take the European champion chip and the premiere chip

    • santori says:

Our problem in the first half was the midfield balance.

Rosicky, Nasri and Frimpong were not quite as effective pressing as was Ramsey, Jack, Song.

No surprise as they don’t play together quite as much.

I didn’t think we had that muchbite up top either in the first half. RVP added the extra threat for us, which if he were playing with the 2nd half mids would have ended in a couple of goals for us.

We were far better with our attacking game in the 2nd half (chances created). Alas the finishing was a bit wasteful. Chamakh needed to be a bit sharper (Great to see him take some shots from the edge of the box) as did Walcott.

  • billp79 says:

    Chris
Out of the squad we have for selection right now…and including Gervihno…

would Carlos Vela be one of the 10 strikers/ winger selected by you?
(out of the 25 squad members)

please name them and where they would play…change your formation if you like

    • santori says:

Hi Bilip, maybe I can weigh in. I see the squad broken down roughly into 2s for each position :

Strikers : RVP, Chamakh, (Gervinho) – I think we should have 3 vying as we should reserve the ability to play 4-4-2(effectively 4-4-1-1 with RVP in the hole drifting)

LW : Arsharvin, (Nasri), (Miyaichi) _ I would prefer a Bastos come in to cover our LB but add offensive power out left. Nasri to the RW and Gervinho as striker with ability to play either wing if need be.

      RW : Walcott, Nasri, (Gervinho)

AM : Fabregas, Ramsey – Been impresssed with the Welshman’s vision. IF fab leaves, we should look into Montolivo who can also cover for Song.

CM : Jack, Diaby – These are the link men who play a bit of both offensive and defensive midfield+ aren’t afraid to charge forward with ball at feet.

DM : Song, Frimpong – Wedon’t play a dedicated DM but these players would be more bias in watching the back. Again I think a Montolivo will help alleviate dependance on Song. Another player to explore in this position is Koscielny who is quick and has good reading.

LB : Gibbs, Traore – I honestly feel we are gambling a bit. A Bastos playing in midfield could be good solution as an experience man as cover just in case Gibbs or Traore fail to materialise this coming season.

      RB : Sagna, Jenkinson

CBack : TV, Djourou, Koscielny – We need to get rid of our senior man Squillaci who is not good enough. Get an Alex who may be freed up bby Chelsea if they move for a new Cback.

keepers – Szsc, Fabianski, Mannone – Personally, I’d prefer to keep Lehman as third choice for another season (and mentor). Let one of the reserve keepers go out on loan.

      Wild Cards – Miyaichi(LW), Vela (Striker/LW) – I rate them about equal

      • billp79 says:

        spot on with this one
I suspect Miyachi won’t get the permit… so Gervihno will move out wide w/ Andre as super-sub

  • santori says:

Djourou will play better with TV (as he does with Kos)

No one plays well with Squillaci.

We need a better senior man.

We shouold keep watch on Chelsea. Alex may come available if they get a new Cback.. Alex has plenty of grit and experience not to mention is good at set pieces and has a cannon of a shot (useful in tallying up more goals from freekicks). At29/30, he will not impede the natural growth of Kos and Djourou. And he’ll prob cost half of a Cahill.

Gibbs played very well (although it’s hard to judge as this is Hangzhou Greentown). I didn’t think Tarore was all too bad either.

But I will sleep better in the knowledge that we have cover for LB that does not invovle our best Cback. Someone like Bastos at Lyon would be perfect. I don’t imagine he will cost anymore than Gervinho and he can also function on either wing in midfield. If Gibbs has a Wilshere year, then Bastos could cover for a potential nasri departure next summer.

Thought there was better pressing from the trio of Song, Ramsey and Jack fter the half. It effectively relieved pressure of of our backs.

Frimpong is a solid looking player but I’ll expect him to be still somewhat rough round the edges.

IF Cesc does go, we should move for Montolivo who is having his own contractual problems at Fiorentina. @5′11, he plays as a deep lying regista (playmaker in the mold of Pirlo) and also covers DM. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to keep Fab with his assist rate but I just think IF he does leave, it may actually work to our (the team’s) benefit to have MOntolivo. It may give us a little more balance which we need.

    • billp79 says:

someone else is looking at Alex…forget who.
I agree I think we are not quite there yeat with either Gibbs or Tray
Frimpong looked massive last year…before the break…I think he should be kept around for more games and familiarity with the 1st squad.

What concerns me is coverage for Sagna…you could see we were lost after he sat out those games with the red card….Eboue scares me…he doesn’t stay on his feet.

Cesc will be with us until 2015

Nasri until at least the end of the year ( I think the contract will come during the season…when he realizes tha City will be banned from European compititions for failing to reduce their roster and outragesly colluded revenue stream and he doesn’t really want to play in front of Evra).

      One trophy all problems solved…

  • santori says:

I won’t read too much into a pre-season friendly. OTOH, what does it say about the Chinese Super League? 4th lace in China = 4th place in the PL? :D

Seriously, what does perturb me is 9as the author of this report has stated) we seem reluctant to explore other tactical approaches to the game.

Particularly when we have to go against a team defending deeper (And we’ve come across this issue a plenty every season, where it’s particularly telling toward end of season when our legs are more weary)

4-4-1-1 to me needs to be explored and practised. We need to load an extra man up top (Chamakh or someone-else) to add finish (not to mention a body) in and around the box.

I think part of the problem with Chamakh is that he is prob more suited to having a supporting striker to play off. he should be stationed in and within the box whilst RVP (or Gervinho or even Vela0 could be given license to roam/ feed off the big man.

I don’t think Chamakh is poor more than Wenger is not utilising him to the best of his ability. Another weapon which Chamakh possesses which is not realised is his heading ability. Again being the sole striker up top in our current 4-3-3 system, he is forced to drift out of position way to often.

I am not saying that we should banadon 4-3-3 (which is more a 4-2-3-1) as I think it could be a useful system against teams who are more open. BUT 4-4-1-1 should be another weapon in the arsenal for us to exploit, particularly if a team has in essence decided to surrender midfield and pack the box. Why then play the extra man in midfield?

With regards Vela, I am a bit ambivalent. I thought he was lucky in this instance to be at the right place and the right time to tap in. I didn’t think he contributed much to the rest of the match and was guilty of losing the ball to often (perhaps it was because he was out left)

To me he is a wild card.

Miyaichi looked useful out left. Good awareness. Not too sure about the work permit situation on account that he is barely out of high school.

Jenkinson was workmanlike. I suppose we will be promoting Eboue to the sidelines for a spell in the dragon suit for now.

In short, I am not sure if our inability to find the net against ‘weaker opposition’ in recent times is an issue of not having lethal enough finishers (RVP has netted 18 in half a season) rather that we are not adopting the most effective system to break those teams down.

One other thing that needs more work in breaking open the shell of teams is our shooting from range. In that sense I was rather please to see Chamakh in particular trying his luck from around the edge of the box. I think this is to be encourage, a little more selfishness from our main strikers please.

    • billp79 says:

      a 4-1-4-1 and
cesc and nasri can take the field together…it means having a strong CB (Stopper) to play the Song or Wilshire role.
