FC Cologne vs Arsenal, 1-2: Full time analysis and player ratings

Written by Chris on July 23, 2011 – 21:00

The Gunning Hawk - ForumRheinEnergieStadion, FC Cologne

The Game

Mixed feelings after today’s game as the Gunners battled their way past Cologne at the RheinEnergieStadion, in Germany.

Needless to say, one has to start with Gervinho’s performance. After officially joining this week, the Ivory Coast International only needed six minutes to time his run to perfection, meet Jack Wilshere’s delicious through pass and give us the lead. Minutes later he was quick to make his way into the penalty area to make it two before giving way for Ryo Miyaichi.

Of course, Gervinho couldn’t have asked for a better debut and the way he clicked with Jack, Theo and the others up front was great to see as it again shows how easy it is for new players to settle down at Arsenal.

What was worrying today, however, was again the defensive department. Way too often we were exposed, especially on the left wing and the high line just cannot work out as in more than one occasion the local team took full advantage of bad communication between the back four.

The second half, simply put, was very boring. I jotted down nineteen notes concerning the first 45 minutes, only nine in the second half. The pace of the game was terribly slow and it seemed we just wanted to keep the scoreline as it was to archive the game as a win.

Samir Nasri and Robin van Persie were yet again sluggish on the ball and lacked in creativity and contrary to Asia, Carlos Vela – again playing in an unusual right-wing position – was terrible as he also failed to make it onto the scoresheet.

As always, there’s some positive to take out of the game like the brilliant 15-minute cameo by Ryo Miyaichi, the vision of Jack Wilshere and the alertness of Vito Mannone in the first part of the second half. But, again, something needs to be done back there if we are to stand a chance for next season’s English Premier League title.

As it is, whatever is being done on the training pitch is not working out and sooner or later we will play against a team with a strong offensive department that will, I’m afraid, punish us more than once.

As always, whether you agree with my ratings or not, submit your own at Arsenal Interactive and make sure to share them on Twitter and Facebook.

Player Ratings

Szczesny: 6,5 – Made a very good save in the 39th minute of the game to deny Cologne after Aaron Ramsey carelessly gave the ball away on the left wing near the corner flag. Can’t blame him for conceding the own goal.

Koscielny: 5,5 – Terrible in the 10th minute of the game in losing Lukas Podolski to attack the man on the ball and too hesitant with his movement when we conceded in the final part of the first half.

Vermaelen: 6,5 – Also guilty of poor positioning but made a number of good interceptions, including the one in the 14th minute that almost ended with a goal.

Jenkinson: 6 – An unlucky own goal can happen to anyone. Overall, Carl had a shaky start letting – together with Alex Song – Podolski through on the right in the 5th minute but improved as the game went on.

Gibbs: 5,5 – Excellent going forward but I lost count of the number of times Cologne easily made it on the left as there was no one covering that particular area of the pitch. In all fairness he produced two good blocks in the second half but as I have been saying for the last month or so, we desperately need to sign a player for the left wing, else trouble lies ahead.

Ramsey: 5,5 – Hot and cold in midfield. Linked up well with Jack as it was the case in Asia, tried his luck from distance in the 33rd minute, started a counter minutes later ended with Kieran Gibbs losing the ball but no idea what he was thinking in the 39th minute when he gifted the ball, and a chance, to Cologne.

Song: 4,5 – Very, very poor. One would think that he would be more careful out there now that Emmanuel Frimpong is adding competition in midfield but I’m afraid he has been terrible so far in pre-season.

Wilshere: 8 – The one to chip it over for Gervinho’s first goal and caused all sorts of trouble to the Cologne defensive department as he produced some brilliant runs such as the one in the 30th minute ended with a free kick on the edge on the penalty area.

Walcott: 6,5 – Very good game for Theo. Made some of his usual mistakes but you could see that we lacked something when he came off in the second half. And of course, the one to assist Gervinho for the second.

Gervinho: 8 – He came, he scored, he left. Welcome to Arsenal, Gervinho. If today was a sign of things to come, I’m of course happy.

Chamakh: 4 – Three games played in pre-season and he failed in all of them. I’m starting to wonder if it was wise to keep him and let Nicklas Bendtner. I mean think about it, as much as you may not like him, Nicklas scores, assisted when used on the right even if he doesn’t belong there last season and is not shy to shoot. What does Marouane bring to the side?

(Subs)
Mannone and Fabianski: 6.5 / 6 – Not much on the pitch but I was impressed with the Italian. He was very quick off the line and this avoided a lot of trouble especially when they pushed from the left. Also nice to see Lukasz back.

Sagna: 6 – Not happy with the ease with which Cologne lifted the ball in the penalty area and almost scored in the 56th minute and he was again on the wrong position of the winger in the 67th minute of the game.

Squillaci and Djourou: 5,5 – This partnership, clearly considered by Arsene as a backup to Thomas and Laurent, is not working out. To be fair on Johan he made a fantastic block in the aforementioned 56th minute chance created by the Germans but these two have to improve.

Frimpong: 6 – Poor on the ball, missing the easiest of passes but a beast when we had to win the ball back. The way he won the ball to set up Andrey in the 81st minute showed how important the youngster can be in midfield.

Rosicky: 6 – Some good movement off the ball and one of the few who opted to try his luck when he forced a save in the 65th minute of the game.

Nasri: 5,5 – Tried to be involved but his final ball was terrible. I hope his future is sorted out next week as it’s already frustrating to be kept on the toes over the future of one player, let alone two.

van Persie: 5,5 – Also disappointing. Yet to score in pre-season but in all fairness he didn’t set the world on fire during the first part of the season last summer either, so I’m not worried.

Miyaichi: 6,5 – Impressed and I was very, very disappointed not to see him in the second half. He’s quick on the ball and brings depth to the side. More of the Japanese, please.

Arshavin: 7 – Brilliant. Shot blocked in the 50th minute of the game, great skill minutes later to get past his marker, another good try, just wide, in the 66th minute and yet another effort saved in the 81st minute.

Vela: 4 – I don’t expect Carlos to perform when used on the right wing. If he is to be used on the wing, it must be the left one, else in the middle. His movement off the ball was good, very good, but he will never bring anything to the side if trapped on the right wing.

Henderson and Afobe: No Vote – I feel for Conor, the poor kid was stretchered off and looked in pain. Not much, of course, to rate him and Benik.

  • Chris says:

Yes, I also agree that he should keep it simple, not keep the ball for a long time and do what he knows, playing one-twos, drifting in the centre and of course, scoring goals.

But then again, this is a player who only started, how many, 4-5 games for us in three years? If all he did in his first year was not enough, he clearly tries to do something “more”, which as you said, it’s working against him.

But it’s not the end of the world, he played three halves, did exceptionally well in the first, OK in the second and failed in the third. Others, like Chamakh, failed in all three :)

    • Ameen says:

      Hi Chris,
      Not talking about the topic.
Are you playing fantasy premier league ?
If you do then i would like to Join your private league. Can i ?
      Thanks & Reply awaited.

  • Jazbo says:

How about we play the boy in the correct postion, for some reason we tend to players into strage postions, not suited to the way they played before they came to the club and certainly not were they play for their national teams.

    • IHateBlogManagers says:

What is his “Correct position” ? He plays part of front 3 for his country not in the middle suddenly only for Arsenal he becomes playing out of position. What the hell is his position in any team he has played ? Bias towards Vela is just too much. He just played for 4 rating fair play on u Chris to give four even though you give random reasons for his performance.

      • Chris says:

He is a central striker, like Hernandez, as simple as that.

Why is it so hard to understand? All one needs to see is the two goals he scored for WBA and the one he scored last week to understand what his position is. I didn’t give “random reasons”, he was very poor but played out of position, which didn’t help his cause.

        • Gunman says:

Totally Agree Chris , His Off The ball Movement with his clinical finishing is his special ability which is best utilised in middle. He aint no Dribbler and of no use at wings esp right wing from where he cant even cross.

        • billp79 says:

I think both Chamahk and Vela are wodering what their contribution might be to Arsenal this year with the type of signings we have had and now that RvP is healthy…
you all forget Chamahk’s contributions at the begining of last year…single handily kept us close to the top of the league….but you can see by ESPN’s picture he’s probably thinking to himself… they could have been his goals if not for Gervihno’s arrival….oh and Chris I really like that leg whip stop by vela today…when the player ran by him with the ball….:)

        • IHateBlogManagers says:

You know the season before where Arshavin was playing central striker Wenger did try Vela for one or two games as central striker , he was certainly not upto it. In the end Arshavin had to do it till Bendtner came back from injury.

Why exactly is his position central striker ? he plays in left or right for his country ? Even when Hernandez was not starting in the worldcup Vela was not a central striker. May be it is his position because he never played and failed ?

          http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/06/18/mexico-2-0-france-tactics/

That is his national team Franco and Hernandez played as central strikers not Vela.

Did he ever play there ? May be in his loan spell ? Almost all top teams play with one striker we are not going to change the formation for Vela and he is not worth it atleast as of now. Lets be honest wide forward is the role Arsenal needs him to play if he cannot he is not useful that is it.

          • Chris says:

He was certainly not up to it.

I wish I had a nickle everytime someone judges a player after only one game.

            • billp79 says:

this is the second game (just between you and me) and if I had the time I’d put out video of a dozen or more…but the less of that the better…he’s not a bad player, I just don’t think he fits in with us well….and the other players we have are producing points…the critical points…

          • George says:

Oh you mean that one time in the carling cup with the second team, yes with the 2nd team he gets great feeds. Yes one game is what it takes to judge a player. Striker he has played many many times with Mexico, if you mean the world cup, he wasn’t the only player played out of position to appease aguirre’s formation. Let me give you a brief look into the team.
Vela central used on the left.
Gio behind central used on the right
Juarez rb used as a dm
Marquez cb used as the other dm
Guardado lw used as a cm

            Need more?

Mate don’t let you dislike or hate make you ignorant. making up lies, you sound as bad as the people that says he didn’t go to Bolton because he wanted more money, or that he parties non stop. All lies.
Btw osasunA he was second choice striker, first choice lm, one game as a striker he scored a goal in 3 minutes against athletic de madrid, assisted one two minutes later.

Who said arsenal should change for him? In all honesty I’ll bet that he won’t be given a run, and will be sold by January.

      • George says:

bIas towards vela? You mean the complaining; he just chips, can’t use his right foot, just tap ins, too light weight etc etc etc…. The most recent reason to hate vela after his “simple tap in” he didn’t celebrate… Its obvious chris holds him to a higher scale, not even arshavin, and walcott get 4’s in games they dissapear and do nothing. Chamakh got a higher rating in his horrendous first game. Chris is showing vela tough love, and its good he doesn’t let “bias” get in the way. I hope he felt pressure from ghervinos brace, this goes for rvp as well, competition is needed in arsenal. I’m tired of some of our players believing it is their right to start and play games regularly even with poor displays.

        • Haris says:

I agree, I think there is a lot more competition this year. Jenkinson, Gervinho, Miyaichi and Frimpong are all there. I think last year one of the major problems was the wingers. We had only 3 wingers, Nasri, Walcott and Arshavin, I dont want to mention Bendtner because thats not his position and he was forced to play there, on the other hand I am not a big fan of Arshavin. But this year we have 5!!!.

          1. Nasri
          2. Gervinho
          3. Walcott
          4. Miyaichi
          5. Arshavin

I hope he uses them in this order.

If Cesc leaves Nasri takes over and we still have 4 very good wingers.

The only major problem this year is the Left back position. We need an established left back, one we can really count on.

The other problem could be the CB. But even if we don`t sign another CB then I think Kyle Bartley should be our 4th choice.

          • kelly says:

gervinho is another fake winger i am waiting to see his performance on the wing.i still think we need another winger or a direct and fast wide player like pires was.

            • bradguns says:

he played lw for lille and lw for ivory coast

              and plays it well

              he gets assists aswell

how is a he a fake winger

              hes just a good one

  • clauddd says:

Jenkinson was top today, apart from the comical goal i thought he was a 7/7.5 made loads of runs up the wing, i think he’ll play better along frimpong than song, but you forgot to mention that top quality block he stopped when i think it was podolski who was gonna let fly!

    • Chris says:

You’re right, 27th minute, he made a good block, too many players to rate

      • kelly says:

jenkinson could make rafael look overrated very soon still can’t believe he has never played in the premier league.he has a natural defensive instint(unlike gibbs) and good reflexes the own goal was all about lack of experience thot he had a chance to head it to the GK.

  • reece says:

Its too bad that in both 2012 and 2013, Gervinho will miss nearly 4 months of premiership football

    • Chris says:

Yes, good point, 2012 means the African Cup of Nations.

  • Bouldy says:

This is a player who was encouraged to join Bolton and instead of money joined WBA. He even couldn’t get games at WBA and wants to play for the Arsenal? I can’t see Vela making it. He will be off next season. A one footed player, physically weak and wish to play as CF. Bolton could have toughened him but he refused to go there.

    • Chris says:

What is your source about him refusing Bolton for money?

  • Orca says:

Gibbs our number one left back next season (gulp)
Were are in serious trouble already
For “F” sake Arsen buy some defenders.

  • irish gooner says:

    we have GERVINHO!!!!!!!!!!

  • Waleed says:

Are ratings really necessary for friendly games?

    • Chris says:

      Why wouldn’t they be?

  • NameChanged says:

The problem for Vela is Wenger plays him … not where he really can play but …. where it suits Wenger’s inflexible system. Same for Bendtner and Denilson – and Walcott. And Reyes and Wiltord. He as done none of them any good. I am not saying Bendtner was ever going to be an Henry …. but he couldn’t make it coming off the bench and being stuck out wide.

    • Chris says:

Again, please, don’t use the name “chris” or we will end up causing all sorts of confusion.

    • billp79 says:

The system is not inflexible…each player moves across the field and is required to use both feet….staying in one position and moving only north south….. is like for U-12…

  • Donnie says:

i think its getting to a point where its becmiong embarssing
gibbs in not ready can you imagin him deffing agains messi, ronaldo, rooney.
but the worst thing is he playes like a wingerrrrrrrrrrr
myybe his forgotten his job is to defend not go up there with the front 3 all the time
he sometimes needs 2 know we stay back.

i lost count on how many times gibbs left a big hole on the left side of the deffence

he should be rated as a 4.
    least song made some tackles.

gervinho looks like his alredy the starting on the left wing if fab goes.

andd i have to say arshavannn was pooooooooor i cant remember last time he had a good game.

    • Chris says:

      Andrey was not poor, mate.

      • billp79 says:

another advocat game…showed up only for offense…it concens me that our outside players are really not providing all that much coverage when the backs move forward…it is the primary reason why we get out of shape in the back…if they don’t then willshire and song must….someone…its why the high line is not working…no pressure on the ball and time to release long thru balls when the backs are forward…and out of position…especialy if they give the ball away cheaply
we either got to provide better coverage or get backs who stay home…

  • Akheri says:

Plz sel out squila, rosicky & use proper profesional positiong

  • scully says:

If Gibbs is our number 1 left back, we’re in big trouble. I lost count of the amount of times he was caught out of position today. I feel Arsene is taking a risk too far!

  • Haris says:

When is the African Cup of Nation?

    • Chris says:

      January 21 – February 12

  • Ovy says:

Miyachi deserved more in your ratings

    • Chris says:

Don’t worry, I was impressed as much as you were but let’s not forget he only played 15 minutes :)

  • Gilberto says:

I love Ryo Miyachi’s football! I hope he has a place in the team. He is a mixture of theo walcott and arshavin + work rate and step overs

  • Mike says:

rosicky has looked way better this preseason than he did most of last season. it’s good to see him putting in tackles and lofting good balls out to the wings. I only got there for the second half, but from where I was tomas and arshavin looked like our best players

  • jimmy says:

gibbs cant be our LB for this season, im sorry but he isnt a defender in my eyes, more of a winger. so many times he is up field when he should be back defending. we got caught out alot today on his side, and against better teams we will be punished. im not saying gibbs is a bad player, i rate him, but he isnt solid enough at defending and defending is our main problem. a new CB and LB are needed IMO. but overall on the game, was a good win, love watching ryo play, runs with no fear, great to see. top games by gervinho, wilshere and theo too!

  • nobbleweskey says:

Well, I think am afraid with what chris just wrote concerning d match!find we have sold our left back and we are trying to bring gibbs to the position!I suggest we should buy a left player that can complet with the light of evra and so on!concerning our back four,I keep saying it,its only vemallen and jonah that is ok for me at the center!I suggest we add to our back four!the likes of samba, cahill and so on!please wenger should that we fans are not happy the way things going on in asrenal, cos the management has release money for him to spend!he should go for quality players!I beg of him!guners till I die

  • GunnerEye says:

I Don’t Think Arshavin Deserve For 7 ! Maybe 6.5 ?He look Pace And Calm But He so Unbalance ,Keep Falling Down .I So Disappoint with He .

  • Silvanna Perez says:

Gervinho looks like a quality player, a good signing and he will hopefully be lifting trophies at Arsenal.

  • xx says:

I did not even watch this game, but can guess it was the same story from the past frustrating six seasons. Poor defence and a number of mediocre players who do not deserve to wear the shirt running around. Arsenal needs the following:

    - Sign two quality centrebacks (Samba and Cahill) and move Vermaleun to leftback. Gibbs is and will never be good enough. The current set of centrebacks are not good enough for the first team’
    - Sign a quality holding midfielder. Melo is available – get him. Go for Parker or Barton if you prefer local talent.
    - Sign a quality striker since Van Persie will be injured shortly.
    - If both Nasri and Fabregas leave, bring in a playmaker. Ramesy’s injury has made him inconsistent and unreliable.
    - Get rid of deadwood, a football club is not a wooden fireplace. Diaby, Eboue , Squillach, Vela , Rocisky, Alumunia, Bendtner, Chamakh should leave. These types of players are like a rotten apple that spoils the whole bag. Replace them with ambitious you players, e.g., Campbell from Costa Rica, Chamberlain from Southampton, etc.

The problem at Arsenal are due to a coach who has gone stale and lost his way, refuses to change and correct obvious mistakes. A coach who is loyal to poor players and has argued that the team is young. There are no young and old players, just good and bad players. Case in point, Dortmund won the Germany league last year with a young team. Closer home, our best player is only 19 (Wilshere) and our worst is the oldest (Alumunia).
Wenger is beyond repair and should be replaced. He can not change course and has already crashed the great Arsenal due to his stubborness. He should leave now!!

    • GunnerEye says:

Mate ,Gervinho So Good As Robin Van Persie ! First 45Minutes Squad is More better Defensive Than Second Squad !Vaemelon ,Koscielny So Solid But They Still Some Mistake .Jenkinson So solid too but End with Unlucky hilarious Own Goal !

      • lee says:

I agree with some of your points however, we have signed gervinho who is very versatile and ccan fill in for van persie when injured. This is the ony game I’ve seen ramsey underperform in since he came back from his injury. Getting rid of wenger could be a risky move but who knows? it could pay off. The rest I pretty much agree with you on

  • selby jr says:

I actually think rocisky, arshavin, diaby, eboue are good squad players. We need a left back, crucially. A centre back would be good, not sure that’s going to be provided and to be honest spending some serious money and buying a world-class playermaker or striker would help to keep nasri and fab. I’m getting to point where fab, let him leave. And take wenger with you please. Arsenal are done with your experiment. Gervinho for the win.

  • serge says:

    GERVIIIIIIINIHOOOOO!!!

  • Gavin says:

Great write up. Couldn’t agree more. Today was a worrying match for me. Our defensive frailties, as exposed by the Germany side in the second half, will be very much exposed in the epl. Worrying times.

I feel that your rating of crimping was a little harsh. I think he broke up a lot of play. I cam recall one wayward pass to the right wing. But he played with grit and determination. Refreshing for our side.

I am a enter faithful, but I do believe we are in desperate need of defensive additions, and fear that it won’t happen.

  • Pejay says:

Whats up with the “Vermaelen as leftback”? He IS one of the best CB in PL and you want him as a LB? I think its sooooooo stupid. I’m sorry if I offend anyone but that’s what I think.

Djourou and Vermaelen is a crazy good pairing in my opinion. Both of them are very good in the air. They are also very good with the ball. The problem last season was the LB and the communication between the defensive line and the GK. I think Sczenzny will do more than fine this year. The problem is that Wenger thinks that Gibbs and Traore will do this season, but I dont think that neither of them will cut it this season. Gibbs has been injured way too much and I don’t thing traore is good enough. If Wenger signs a good LB I think we’ll be one for the trophy this year.

    // Pejay

    • Haris says:

I agree that Vermaelen should play as a CB and if we have issues at the LB which in mine opinion we have then we should just buy one, but Arsene already said he wont buy a LB so…..
I think that is going to be a problem this season.

I would like to see Vermaelen and Djourou play together at the Emirates Cup because I really don`t know who should stand next to Vermaelen at St. James Park.

      • kelly says:

personally i see vermaelen as a holding midfielder rather than a leftback if need be.hes more of a power player than a technical/athletic player that you need as a fullback.

  • jason says:

Nothing has change in my eyes with Arsenal we still have the same problems that most need fixing.

Frankly I believe we have signed a lot worse than Gervinho and i believe he will do well but he wont be the difference this season between winning and lossing it will be our defense.

Sadly for me nothing has improved in that department we have one good defender in our back line being Sagna.

Until Wenger realises the importance of two quality centre backs and a experienced top quality keeper we wont win anything.

    • Haris says:

      I don`t think we need a keeper and 2 CB`s, 1 will do.

You said Sagna is the only good defender we have, I think you forgot Vermaelen.

In order to fix the defense I think a left back and a center back will do.

      As CB`s we have.

      1. Vermaelen
      2. (new signing)
      3. Koscielny/Djourou
      4. Koscielny/Djourou

So we will have 4 very good defenders. I don`t think we need 5.
Even if we do Kyle Bartley is there.

And as a keeper Szczesny is fantastic, I just hope that Arsene will give him the n1 and not to Fabianski.

      • jason says:

ahaha we all like Szczesny now but it wont last when he starts making mistakes we will all point fingers at Wenger for not signing one with experience.

And frankly Sagna is class Vermalean is good but just came back from a long term injury all the other defenders you have named aint good enough.

And we dont even know who the new signing will be.

  • Dhaval says:

Does any one else think we should change our formation to something like 3-5-2?

    • ARun says:

If we have the right wingbacks for the job (which we don’t), that will work out fine…I have, for quite some time now, been thinking about a 3 man defence, a la Napoli last season (and Liverpool occasionally)…but who will play the 2 wide men that are so crucial in any 3-man defence?? Sagna is not good enough offensively, and we still don’t have a clear first choice on the left side…

I saw the game live on local tv.It seems to me the gunners are playing the same style. It’s constant pressing on the edge of the opponents’ box or down the middel. Some passes were misdirected/misplaced or intercepted.
This type of game suits counter atacking teams and there are many in the epl.The only positive I can get out of this match is the defenders swarming back to defend the goal.It may work against Cologne but not against the top teams in the epl and cl.

  • Chukwudi says:

Good post. I agree with the ratings. We really do need a left back as Gibbs should be used in Carling cup games for now to gain experience- he isn’t ready for the big time just yet. Do you think Arsene sees what we all can see? He can’t be that short sighted or can he? Does he ever read Arsenal blogs? Is there a way he can reached?
The excuse about giving youth a chance can’t wash again- Gibbs obviously can’t be first choice next season- most of the cologne attacks came through his wing while he was upfield. SOMEONE PLEASE TALK to Arsene

The first have was a beautiful game i really enjoyed it was happy to see Gervinho he is exactly the kind of player we needed Jenkinson was excellent and he did no wrong he was clearing the ball but the ball fell in the net glbbs did very well too
the high line is the problem they are not mastering it yet and a very dangerous way to play but still it was an entertaining match the second half was sluggish but the unit had held well shamcha did very well remember the run back to help the defense frimpong was very good too we showed some steal today if we keep improving this could be our year i would love to see one more defender having varmalin as the captain puts our team in a nice comfort zone

  • Osaks says:

Please where is TRAORE? He wil definitely be better than Gibbs!

  • George says:

Chris i strongly disagree with your rating on vela, having watched the Gáme again, unless you were rating him at the rw position. This is no excuse, he made some good passes, and lost the ball a few times. He was moving too much to the middle and wanted to get fed a through ball the whole game, he was anxious to score. Yet there was not one good pass made to him through out the game. Arshavin really stepped up this game, and wanted to score badly. Ghervino’s arrival-with goals- really put vela and arshavin on their toes. I really wish I could have seen that in nasri and RVP, but I guess they know they are starting already. Hopefully ghervino, a

arrival will instill much needed competition into our offense, and will break the mentality that they don’t need to perform consistently to be a regular.

  • morrow says:

Gibbs will be better than Clichy, we look exposed when he goes forward and play breaks down because the left midfielder does not cover for him keeping our shape, Ramsey in la la land playing only for himself. When in position look at his defensive work and keeping the ball within the team with non risky passes, one of the most intelligent players in the team. He has premier league and Champion league experience and no one complained then, really why now?

  • Vickie says:

For how many weeks do you think this team can play good before the tiny legged guys start throwing in the towel due to lack of strength in their legs? Ramsey, walcot, nasri, gibbs, kos, djourou, rosicky, squilla, vela and co? Our first five to six matches would be pleasing to eyes but afterwards, expect the unexpected. Verm should work on his positoning. He is not as good as people shout if only you would sit down and assess him.

  • Phil says:

We’re f***ed. I sat with my mate who I have sat next to at Emirates for the last 3 seasons. We have not renewed our tickets and yeterday it was obvious why, I can’t afford £1900 to feel this shitty in person – again.
It has taken so long to get rid of Denilson. Nobody wanted him. Squillaci? – the new Pascal Cygan. Kocsielni – lovely kid great heart – a midget in central defence. Djourou had a 100% preseason last year but completely zoned after after his second injury – not a contender. If we insist on small people at left back put Kos there at least he puts some bite into tackles. Vela is the far distant 2nd to Hernandez and he was the same at all the Mexici matches. Rosicky looks sepnt.
We have no true left wingers and 1 right winger and no cover from him.
We have some great English kids dying to get into the team Bartley JET and Lansbury all of who will fight like lions,
BUT – in management you are either loved or feared and for this game in this country I feel the fear factor – as exemplified by Ferguson is proving the winning formula. AW is I believe stuck in a maelstrom. His nice guy approach just hasn’t worked. I love and respect all that he has done and commend him for trying this, but he just isn’t ruthless enough to drop people who have let us all down.
Witness the Connor Henderson debacle yesterday. He dosen’t figure in the Reserves and doesn’t star in the youth team. He comes on, is completelyout of his depth and winds up injured. Whereas Bartley (Miquel, Bhotelo Lanssbury, JET, Traore ) is/are left to suck eggs.
It’s all going Pete Tong my friends and I can’t see a happy ending to this.
    Sorry

  • ole says:

Alright…everybody is talking about buying a new leftback..but for f-sakes who should it be? My vote goes for either Marcell Jensen or Caceres…

  • Hunter says:

If Song is rated 4.5 then Gibbs deserves a 2. That was one of the worst performances by any Arsenal defender in quite some time. Arsene needs to pull his head out of his a$$ and get a real player out there or at least play Traore. I’m sorry but Gibbs isn’t even good enough to play there for a championship side.

On another note……did anyone see Jagielka play yesterday? This would be another disastrous defensive signing for us. I don’t think he is any better than what we have already got. He lacks size, pace AND positional sense. If we are looking at anyone from that Everton squad the only 2 worth a crap are Baines and Cahill. No one else.

  • Al says:

I know what is Vela’s position – it is the left side of the bench. Such a waste of talent.

  • Arsenaler says:

We Have Traore as Well, I Have To See More Of Him To Judge..

  • bradguns says:

    awesome 2 more lw players
now since we got 7 ppl that can play in that 1 position well how about
    we fill 3 defensive roles

    1 cb 1 lb 1 gk

sagna and vermalean our only good defensive players

what happeaned to armand trorae ne ways ?

  • brian says:

Incredible contrast between the two halves on Saturday. In the first half with Walcott and Gervinho staying wide, with Chamakh up front and Wilshere and Ramsey supporting from mid-field I thought we looked really good going forward. In the second half we reverted to type with Nasri,Rosicky,Vela,Arshavin,Van Persie all congesting the edge of the penalty area centrally trying to play the intricate one twos which hardly ever come off these days.
The less said about the defence in both halves the better.
