Arsene Wenger on the Cologne win and Conor Henderson’s injury

Written by Jeffrey on July 24, 2011 – 4:45

The Gunning Hawk - ForumArsene Wenger

Arsenal needed two Gervinho goals to battle their way past Cologne on Saturday with manager Arsene Wenger happy with his side’s performance.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Frenchman started by talking about the one-minute silence observed before the game for what happened in Norway on Friday, expressing his sympathy over the attacks and describing what happened as a “terrible shock” for a peaceful country.

On the game, the Arsenal boss explained that he is overall happy with the performance of the players, with the good pace in the first half and also with Gervinho’s debut as he however added that the defensive department was exposed to counter-attacks after taking too many risks.

Asked about the late injury suffered by young Conor Henderson, the manager revealed that the 19-year old twisted his knee and the injury looks “quite bad” as he concluded by saying that the midfielder will undergo tests on Sunday morning.

After the game, Wenger said:

I think it is the minimum you can do. It was a terrible shock when you see what happened there, in a country that is so peaceful.

We would like to support all those people who suffer, of course. We know that Norwegians follow English football.

We played at a good pace in the first half and looked dangerous. Gervinho had a good start and that is always important for his confidence.

Overall, I liked today. We took many risks and were exposed to counter-attacks but, overall, I am happy.

The only sad thing today is the injury to Conor Henderson, it looks quite bad but let us hope that we have good news tomorrow morning. He twisted his knee, I don’t know how big the damage is but the first signs don’t look too encouraging.

Last time I remember both teams were ripped by Arsenal

last time we met them i recall we beat both of them

From what I saw Gibbs was out of position that resulted in their attacks on him flank. Communication and organisation was poor. Might be because they are new to playing together and that you might find Djourou and Kos working better for now due to familiarity of last season. Jenkinson, unfortunate goal, glad that one was in a friendly.
Vela is a fox in the fox. Please don’t punish him on right wing like Bentner, he’ll be even worse.
Chamakh, not sure if it’s confidence or depression or our style but he doesn’t seem to fit and has a poor touch or lost his touch. Sorry guy looks like a sub season for you.
RVP, please take it easy, wanna try see if we can have you fit at least 80% of this season. Perhaps even wrap him up and pack him away in the games we’re sure to win.
Nasri, why bother going on the pitch. Not interested in Arsenal on or off. Let him play a little at the Emerates cup so we can boo the little bratt off to City.
Great performances from Gervinho, Ryo, Wilshere, Ramsey at times, Arshavin and Mannone, Wilcott looked good too.

with two beautifully taken goals from new signing, gervinho, what more can we ask for?our wingers and full backs will have to b on their toes so as they dnt get countered easily when d league starts…fab shud go 4 d ryt price..wudnt want a scenario where he passes the ball to walcott but sees messi and iniesta with da ball..JET and kyle shud b promoted to da first team squad cos i feel they are ready…nas issue shud b sorted out, asap!

Conor Henderson is just not ready Wenger!

This current squad you managed to scramble together will not stand the rigor of a hard season. They will make a good start then bend when the going gets tough. Swallow your pride and hang on to the JET and Bartley for your second eleven.

More so failure to buy quality will prove your downfall in the end. These kids look good now, but will they make it to the end of the season injury free?

Thought Conor Henderson had signed for Liverpool – surely Carl Jenkinson!!!

Please ignore above comment – excuse my ignorance!!

  • Arsenal says:

I thought Gervinho is brilliant and will partner Van Persie well. With two strikers we now can rotate between Van Persie, Gervinho, Arshavin, Chamahk (who seemed to lack confidense, but I hope he gets it because he can be top class), Walcott, and Vela. Not to mention Afobe and JET. I think it’s crucial we keep Arshavin as an impact sub because we know he cant play a full game so bring him on around the hour mark because no one can change a game as quick as he can. As for Carl Jenkinson, he was the only solid defender out there (Vermaelen included), the own goal was just unfortunate. Plus you know your going to be an amazing Arsenal right back if you score a real quirky own goal (Lee Dixon). We just need a left back, centreback, and midfielder now.
