Emmanuel-Thomas set to JET? Eboue to Depart? Nasri Told He Will Stay

Written by Jeff Patterson on July 25, 2011 – 9:00

The Gunning Hawk - ForumEmmanuel Eboue

Well, it was great to see that positive result on Saturday and to see that some of Arsenal’s new young stars are getting ever closer to being first team candidates. Wilshere, Ramsey (except for that one big mistake), Miyaichi, Frimpong, Jenkinson… these are all names which I expect to see on the back of Arsenal shirts for a long, long time.

One name that won’t be around in the near future is Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, who according to Skysports.com will be moving on this summer. Arsenal have reportedly agreed to terms with several Championship sides, including Ipswich, Burnley and Portsmouth.

The fee is suggested to be around £1million, but a large sell-on fee has been included, should his future club attempt to sell him down the road. Emmanuel-Thomas has had successful loan spells with several clubs, but has never been able to break into the Arsenal first team, appearing only once for the senior side.

Another possible departure is utility-player Emmanuel Eboue, with the Daily Mail Online reporting that Turkish club Galatasaray have tabled a £4million for the Ivory Coast international. Eboue has so far been left out of Arsenal’s preseason travels, supposedly for an injury he’s carrying, but perhaps it was only because a deal was in the works.

I personally feel that the quick start of Carl Jenkinson’s Arsenal career has all but spelled the end for Eboue. I have always admired the spirit that Eboue brings to the club, you could always tell that he was a man who enjoyed every minute he was given to be an Arsenal player. Even with some of the tough times he had on the pitch (the Liverpool Penalty, Wigan in 08), he approached every game like being an Arsenal footballer was the best thing he could think of. And of course you can’t forget the hugs, haha.

I think Arsenal will miss what he can bring, say what you want about some of his performances, but it’s nice to have a player on your squad who can literally fill any role on the pitch. If he does move, I wish him the best.

One player who will definitely NOT be moving this summer is apparently Samir Nasri. Several news sources have reported that the Arsenal board have issued their support to Arsene Wenger, who has repeatedly stated his desire to see the 24-year-old midfielder stay at Arsenal and extend his contract. Chairmen Peter Hill-Wood has admitted it is a gamble, but one that the Gunners are willing to make.

“It is possible we could lose the player on a free transfer but we are prepared to take that risk,” said Hill-Wood.

Less substantiated rumors suggest that Nasri has told teammates that he will not be resigning, and is perfectly willing to play out his final year with the club and move on next summer.

I have to say, this is a massive gamble by Arsenal, especially with rumored offers upwards of £20million reportedly on the table. Arsene has already stayed true to his promise of not letting players with 1 year remaining run down their contracts, selling Gael Clichy after the two sides couldn’t agree.

Nasri is a little different, however. Replacing him will be more expensive and harder to do, common sense suggests that replacing Samir effectively would cost at least as much as Arsenal would get from his sale.

With the season fast approaching, Arsene would be leaving it very late to bring in a replacement, especially the way he negotiates. With the difficult start facing Arsenal in this fast approaching season, and with Cesc Fabregas quietly looking more and more likely to exit the club, keeping a proven player like Samir Nasri looks more and more appealing.

The downside, though, is possibility that Nasri could be moving to a rival for free in 12 months time. If you think selling Samir to Manchester (either club) sounds bad now, letting him leave for free next year is catastrophic. Selling him now at least gives us something, for a club that relies on getting a return on it’s investments, they are taking a remarkably cavalier attitude to this situation.

And that is just the financial consideration. What about the effect’s of having a disgruntled and unhappy star in your squad all year?

Samir has not been one to shy away from controversy, as the spat with William Gallas would indicate, how will he react to being held to his contract against his will? I don’t think he’d go so far as gain a poor reputation, but let’s face it, the last thing Arsenal’s young squad need is a year-long distraction like Samir Nasri’s contract situation will become.

roony did the same thing to man u last year after he change his mind and sign for them that bring back the team spirit if i have something to tell nasri i think he as to do the same thing and sign he will bring back the joy to the team and surely they will win this year

    • Berk Face says:

Yep Rooney was given one hundred and sixty thousand reasons a week to sign a new deal at United…

Nasri will go next year for free, oh well. That’s what the richest clubs do they buy the best players and offer them the most money. People will probably call Taggart a ‘genius’ again this year after adding to his vast expensive squad.

  • Jay Shikongo says:

The issue of Nasri need a second thought. it really does not make sense of keeping the player on a year contract just because you don’t want to join your arrival. what will happen when his contract ends? will you again prevent him not to sign for man city, chelsea or man united? there are quality yoong player there who Wenger can buy with the 20mil sale of Nasri rather than using money for the club coffer to replace a free departing player. Nasri or either Cesc are irreplacable. my advice to Wenger is to let both go and replace them with Mata, Thomas Muller and Chamberlaine in total amount of 50mil on the he can get from both and improve the backline with Clichy, Bedtner and Eboue sale money or make a cash -plus-player deal for Jagielka or Cahill with Squillacy and Eboue. Wenger don’t need to use the budget but he can simply sell and replace uncommited players.

    • santori says:

You are risking too much unkowns particularly as we hit the ground running with a crucial CL qualifier and several big away trips.

Seems to make sense on paper but not in reality.

  • OnDGooner says:

”….these are all names which I expect to see on the back of Arsenal shirts for a long, long time.”

NO YOU WON’T SEE THESE NAMES ON SHIRTS FOR A LONG TIME TO COME IF WE CONTINUE TO FAIL AND OTHER NOW BIGGER TEAMS COMEIN FOR THEM.

TELLS YOU WHY THIS MUST BE A MAKE OR BREAK SEASON FOR MR WENGER!!!

    • santori says:

In a sense yes, which is why keeping Nasri over and above financial return considerations is also crucial this summer (particularly if there is movement on the Fabregas front)

  • Mike says:

We need to keep Nasri IMO! We finished his development, he is going to be much better than Cesc IMO?! Pay the right wage, we have big enough stadium to keep good players now! No more excuses! And get rid off Cesc and his Barcelona nonsense; and with that money buy Benzema for £20mill! SImples… This team can walk the premiership IMO!

    Sagna Djor Kols Verm

    Song

    Walcott Willsh Nasri

    RVP Benzema

    • santori says:

We need a CBack before we consider a striker.

The striker position has been fulfilled by Gervinho. Abenzema buy would have been an opportunity buy but I suspect (with the Neymar deal seemingly falling through) that benzema will stay on at Real.

OTOH, we would well do to get us insurance for LB in say a Bastos who can also play either LW or RW (particularly if Gibbs has a breakthrough year)

  • Ihaveagun says:

I would rather have Nasri at the Club even if we loose him on a free. Has Arsene spent the money that he has at his disposal? Also remember Toure & Ade to Clty? Where did all that money go? If he sells Nasri that money won’t be spent on players it’ll go to the board and Arsene’s 6m a year salary. The last 6 years Arsene has spent 75m or so, while Man U and Chelsea have spent 5 times as much in the same period. What ever the reason weather it’s been the board or Arsene the money is just not being spent that’s just our reality at the moment but in saying all that it’s a near miracle Arsene has kept us in the top 4. So it’s not all bad but like most I do find myself hoping we’d sign an established “world class” player.

  • Nikko says:

How about, we let Nasri go, and give Miyachi a break through season? Sad to see Eboue go, he brings a smile your face. I hope he has a good time at Galatasaray.

I won’t be buying the Arsenal kit with Nasri and number eight on the back.

Im thinking 10 and Van Persie. Or Verminator! Is Wilshere going to wear 19 again next season?

    • santori says:

We need 4 widemen at least.

AA and Nasri out left (with Miyaichi understudying)

Walcott and Gervinho right (Nasri can play there too, and Gervinho can play left).

      That’s a lot of flexibility.

Personally, I would prefer Gervinho roled further up as a striker with freedom of movement. In which case, there may be an argument for an additional winger over and above current numbers. (Also if Fab leavse, another option may be to move AA infield as a playmaker, particularly as he has lost sustained pace out wide)

      • Will says:

I think Arshavin shouldn’t be wide. He just isn’t that sort of player. I think he needs to be in a central playmaking role.

  • Aussie Jack says:

Personally I can`t see us getting much value out of a player with Nasri`s attitude, he can`t be relied upon give 100%. Wenger (the money man) astounds me. He can look at losing 20 million in the face and yet be so thrify when it comes bringing in new players….Obviously there`s something I don`t understand.

  • nicky says:

I quote “Replacing Nasri effectively would cost as least as much as Arsenal would get from his sale”.
That is true but any replacement would (a) want to play for Arsenal and (b) be chosen by Wenger as a suitable addition to the squad. At the moment we have a wantaway who will simmer until he leaves…a most unsatisfactory situation. Get rid at the right price NOW, preferably to the Continent.

  • Femi Jacobs says:

Nasri should be sold, no player is greater than our Club Arsenal. If his money is increased and did not play well this season, others that play well will also want increase. Or he would have laid precedence for players holding the club to ransom. I assure you that Hleb played more than Nasri when he was here, he left and you can see what become of him.

We can always get players to replace Nasri for a far lesser amount and he will play to impress.

To me i feel Ebue should stay one more season if Nasri goes. He plays any position and that is good for the club. Remember his play during Arsenal vs Barcelona. Only that we blame him for woes and not praise him enough.

Let us cash on Nasri and you will see us perform better. Ryo should please be given more opportunity to play, we want to see more of those skills. But he needs to build up and strenghtened for Premier league so those guys dont push him around.

    • santori says:

Yes but you better be smart when to sell and when not to. There are other considerations for us beyond profit and loss. Also more notably other priorities for us in the market not to be saddled with finding a Nasri replacement now.

  • patric alex says:

i believe samir nasri will surely make a u turn and sign a new contract…he just want arsene to show some ambition..nasri is part of arsenal future and even arsene kn that..arsenal sud sell cesc and end this rubish den buy mata/carzola,cahill and parker and will be well with what we have…nasri is part of arsenal future but if does live,he can be replaces easily..yu can our match against koln in d first the team play well with jack, rambo, song, gervinho, walcott…and remember nasri consoul jenkerson wen he made dat mistake…he will surely stay and take up from cesc role in arsenal…

  • Stan The Man says:

Nasri must sign a new contract with Arsenal soon . It really is a disaster to let him go on free to a rival club . If Nasri really does have the intention of moving on then what’s the point of keeping him for that ONE more season ? He will most likely not have the heart to play to the fullest for the Gunners and this could affect the team morale .

  • Sureboiy says:

Is better u let him 2go nw dan leavn him on free transfer

  • chix says:

wenger iz very stuborn, till he loses the champions league spot to TOtEHam,thats

on MaTa, thats how he thinks beleive me,
we can see how he has replaced clichy
wif injury prone, not good enough GIbbs,
this GUy is Just a Gambler, and the board

    i love arsenal

    • santori says:

When have we relinquished our spot to Spuds? Oh yes, we were suppose to last season but despite a dismal end, they still couldn’t catch up. And now they have to sell Modric.

Besides, when were we about bringing in big names? Know your history.

Viera (via an unsuccessful short stint in Milan) came to us from Cannes. Henry, Pires, Lljungberg (Where was he from?), Flamini, Hleb, Adebayor, Vermaelen…

Nextthing you’l say Wenger only won trophies because of Graham’s defense…oh yes, I forgot, Keown was in the invincibles. :D

  • serge says:

please people get your heads out your (well you know what) and stop saying Benzema will fix our problems its embarrassing to read as an arsenal fan, there is no way he will come he is already at Real Madrid the dream for superstars.

  • Phil says:

    I amazed by 2 things:
    1. We’re considering letting JET go
    2. Not one comment has been made on this site about him

    Astounding

    • santori says:

We have 3 strikers as is + There’a lot of pressure from the Academy. Afobe being one. Miyaichi another. JEt’s opportunities are fast diminishing.

  • Mike says:

    @Serge

For some us, Arsenal is the football team to be! I would rather play in Wenger team than Mourhino! Just ask C Ronaldo!

  • JohnDale says:

@Phil Yeah, so true. We keeping Maruane and selling JET (and even Bendy)?? Seriously?!? Without even giving him enough games to see what he brings. That’s our beloved Arsenal. But hey, they know more about JET than we could ever know.

    • santori says:

What makes you think JET is better than Chamakh?

Chamakh in my mind is not being used to his better attributes.

He is very much a player we need to have bang the door down with teams sitting deep.

Yet we play him in a 4-3-3 whereby he drifts out way too often and is consequently not as effective.

With both RVP and Gervinho firing, I think we can explore ways to better use Chamakh’s obvious aerial strength and physicality. I would suggest looking into 4-4-1-1 in which Chamakh should remain in and around the box. He is otherwise not as mobile as the other two strikers in the current system.

  • alpha t says:

I dont see the sense in selling JET, he’s quite simply our best reserve player!
I expect another loan deal, unless the player himself wants to leave, i dont see the sense in it! Especially for a £1M, i can think of at least 3 players that we could sell to generate cash, if thats the issue.

    • Haris says:

I think the problem is that he wants to leave.
If he wanted to stay I`m sure Arsene could loan him somewhere else. He could takeover from Maroune Chamakh next year if the Moroccan doesn’t perform this year.

    • billp79 says:

He’s arrogant beyond his years….a Ballotelli in the making…I get the impression that a lot of England youth are over valuing themselves now that there is a quota…

  • garageflower says:

sell nasri (cos he doesn’t wanna be there)…..buy eden hazard!

    • santori says:

Lille are reluctant to sell Hazard (having sold Gervinho). This isn’t a supermarket.

Besides, do you really want to strengthen your peer rivals in the PL? Is that wise policy this coming season?

  • billp79 says:

Concerning Nasri- I think all parties are waiting to see how the begining of the season turns out….there is always the January transfer window…

  • Hunter says:

I would sell Nasri to anyone outside England who wants him. The problem is that Arsene won’t spend the money properly after he is gone.

I would gladly swap Nasri for Eden Hazard. Nasri seems to be a bit of an arrogant jerk because he was disliked by many in the French squad as well. We don’t need any of those type in our squad. If there was a guarantee Arsene would actually spend the money on a proper replacement I would be all for him getting out of North London for good. We don’t need any players around who think they are irreplaceable or who want to court other teams.

    • santori says:

      what makes you say this?

We just bought Gervinho for 10.5m and he covers 3 positions for us.

      You’re not making any sense.

  • santori says:

Couple of issues on Nasri :

    1) We are in an unfortunate situation (for whatever reason) in that if we let him go now, it will be bad precedent for the rest of the team (considering the mood pervasive when Clichy was sold). I rate Fabregas possible departure at 40% (Up from 15% previously as Barca are moving some players). However, I feel it is still dependent on barca hitting the minimum valuation.

had we let nasri go earl on, I would think it more likely that Fab will force the issue (not to mention possibly a couple of other players may become agitated)

    2) Yes we risk losing him for free (and possibly to either Manchester clubs) next summer BUT losing him this season to a PEER rival would absolutely send the wrong signal. It’s one thing he’s moved off shore but could you imagine what the club would feel had we strengthened one of our rivals substantially?

Being prepared to lose 12-13m (minus depreciation) we paid for Nasri (Not the potential 20+m) sends a signal I would thought most detracting Arsenal fans would want, in that we are setting our sights beyond profit and loss accounts. You can never please them.

    3) There is still a possibility that Nasri will sign the extension.

    4) We have enough funds to forgo a 7m profit on Nasri to secure the players we really need this summer.

    5) In an active summer for us, we do not want too much changes. We hit the ground running with a crucial CL qualifier and several big away games to top sides. The more settled our midfield the better. Bringing in a host of new names will lead to intergration issues.

  • summer breez says:

we got a good team on ….we need little more addition and we are good to go and win but the addition is necessary if we want to win the champion league
we have kept the unite together now we have the experience required to be the champions

  • Vivek K says:

Maybe the Nasri situation is a drama between Arsene and Nasri.Imagine this…Nearabout Aug 13 One fine morning Nasri signs a new contract,he says he loves Arsenal so much(and add that he never said he wanted to leave himself, which is true) and Wenger saying I always knew Nasri would stay.Thats creates a positive buzz and we start off the season in style.ALL IS WELL WITH ARSENAL………..DREAM ON RIVALS………….
