Already looking forward to seeing Theo and Gervinho on the pitch together

Written by Jeff Patterson on July 26, 2011 – 9:00

The Gunning Hawk - ForumGervinho

Theo Walcott is excited for the chance to play alongside summer signing Gervinho, calling him “a breath of fresh air.” Theo has also gone on record saying he thinks the Gunners owe their fans a fast start to the new season, after last season’s disappointments.

“Without a doubt [we owe the fans],” Walcott told Arsenal.com.

“They have been so loyal to us when we have not been winning trophies which we should be for such a big club. As players we are disappointed in ourselves but that is in the past now. This year is a massive one for everyone, for the Club itself. The fans are very important to us all and hopefully we can make them proud.”

It’s great to see that the players recognize what a massive crossroads this year may be for Arsene Wenger and his “youth project.” It is equally nice to hear that the players are determined to deliver this year, and hopefully bring home a trophy to North London. For the uncertainty and discontent that is swirling around this club right now, winning represents a perfect cure-all.

It doesn’t need to be said, but further failures will only see more questions being asked of this squad, both in the media and internally within the squad. Players in the squad like Walcott and Robin van Persie, both of whom will be entering the final year of their contracts next summer, may begin to wonder if Arsenal is really the club for them.

Like I said, it doesn’t really need discussing, the “what-ifs” and worst-case scenarios. This team needs to show the fans and their manager that they are good enough, and I think it is great that Theo Walcott is willing to acknowledge the fact.

As for Gervinho, who stole the show in his Arsenal debut, with two excellent goals in just over 25 minutes on the pitch, Walcott was full of praise.

“[Gervinho] will be a breath of fresh air I think,” said Walcott. “He looks a great talent.

“You can tell he can bring goals, he has got plenty of pace about him and he is very comfortable on the ball. I am looking forward to playing with him. You don’t want to put too much pressure on him but I am sure he can deal with that.”

Walcott assisted Gervinho’s second goal, which was created when Jack Wilshere played a beautiful ball wide across the box to an open Theo, who then picked out Gervinho’s forward run with a timely cross.

I look forward to seeing these two on the pitch together, and it was very encouraging to see that Gervinho seemed to have an understanding with most of his teammates.

If you had never watched an Arsenal match before Saturday, you’d not have guessed that Gervinho was a new signing. I really hope he can continue scoring, but the most important thing for Gervinho is to avoid hitting a wall physically.

Last year Marouane Chamakh had a tremendous first half of the season, but according to him, he ran out of gas in the second half of the year.

Chamakh’s form dipped back in January, and we still have not seen him return to the level he exhibited early in his Arsenal career. Some are beginning to worry that the first half of last year was the aberration, not the second half, and that Chamakh simply may not have what it takes.

Hopefully, Arsene will take note of this and use Gervinho more cautiously. It shouldn’t be to difficult, where Chamakh was forced to play nearly every game early last year, due to injuries to RVP and Bendtner, Gervinho is a type of player that Arsenal have in abundance. Arsenal have no problems with scoring early in most seasons, but when the home stretch arrives, it would be great to have a relatively fresh Gervinho who still has some goals in him.

this is the team we need to win the premiership:

    Sagna- Djor- Kols- Verm

    ———Song——–

    Walcott- Willsh- Nasri-

    —–RVP—– Benzema

and get ridd off Cesc and his Barcelona nonsense!!!

we need to compete and win! you can only do that with something special….

    • Aaron says:

You make it sounds soooooooooo easy! Verm shouldn’t be a left back, we’d be wasting his talent and we’d need even more center backs to buy because if we lose one to injury, now all we have is Squillaci and Bartley who hasn’t played a PL game. Benzema won’t leave Madrid and Nasri will hopefully sit on the bench all year…

    • Ben says:

      What happened to the goalkeeper?

      • Haris says:

Are you kidding with this squad we don`t need a goalkeeper :D

    • anonimous ps3 hacker says:

Are u reading the article this is about gervinho and u did not include him in ur squad stupido
      conprende!

    • Hunter says:

There is no way we can start the season with Djourou or Koscielny in the starting XI unless you want to leak goals left right and center from set pieces like we did last season.

  • Justus says:

Chamakh has shown no form for months and has trouble even passing the ball! Gervinho looks very promising but I cannot see the point in keeping Nasri when his heart is not in it. Mind you Wenger has spent NOTHING yet as Gervinho’s fee is covered by sales of Clichy, Eboue (who is going to hug people now?) and JET. As and when Cesc goes, Wenger will have £35M to spend and still not dip into any transfer budget whilst saving enormous sums on wages.

  • Zeki says:

Theo? Are u all serious? Have u seen how headless the guy is, he is useless!!
He has been arsenal 5 years or so and one good performance against Liverpool in the champions league. His crosses always end up nowhere near our players, he loves to hug the touch line all game and playing one-two with sagna.
He is not good enough for our club, if only wenger could remember what a real winger is like.
Pires, overmars, ljungberg, even henry could play on the wing.

Walcott is a headless chicken so everyone needs to stop supporting these gutless players, no wonder we dont win anything.

Put pressure on Wenger to get rid of all the dead wood

    • jay says:

support another club if you cant support your own players. Get behind them, show some positive passion!! new season, new start, renewed hope!

At only 22 theo is such a dangerous player. Henry, pires, bergkamp were nowhere near as dangerous as he is now when they were 22. I reckon he will have more in his locker this season like he added more to his game last season and the season before that.

Walcott is a game changer. Realise it!

    • Davi says:

28 games, 9 goals, 7 assists. I don’t know how many assists Bale got but I’m quite sure it was less than theo, and GB scored fewer goals. So theo was (I believe) more useful than the PFA player of the year!
Last season he showed massive improvement and was far from a headless chicken. He’s not perfect, but how many players are? And he’s getting better.
Didn’t like him much before this year, but the facts speak for themselves. He’s improved massively.

      • coob23 says:

bale scored 9, assisted 1, he’s an overblown spud nonce, who is unbelievably overrated, like much of the spuds team, because their manager looks like he’s had several strokes so people feel sorry for them….

        • Davi says:

Actually I think Bale only got 7 league goals. Got it initially from wikipedia but found it again on a spurs website

    • Davi says:

Btw, overmars only scored more league goals than theo in one season in his first yaer at the club (out of 3 years) and only managed more than 9 league goals 3 times in his entire career, which, considering MO played in successful Ajax and Arsenal sides and for Barcelona, gives you an idea of how well theo has actually done this season.

    • LFS GUNNER says:

no, sorry, I haven’t seen how headless the guy is.
maybe you should start to support a few players, as I think Walcott is faaaaaar from being the worst player at Arsenal.
Maybe you don’t like stats or rankings but of aaaaaaaaaaall the football players around the globe, he’s ranked at 53. For me, that’s not bad at all.

PS. He’s 22 years old by the way, this is just the begining.

  • Davi says:

“You don’t want to put too much pressure on him but I am sure he can deal with that.”
The great thing about Gervinho is that he is trying to get the attention. With all the crap in the media, it’s fantastic that our major signing is looking so good. He said it wouldn’t matter if cesc and nasri left and I think that is because he is so confident in his ability to make things happen for us. Really looking forward to seeing him in the side next season. One more CB and I think we’ll be set. I just hope it’s not jagielka – can’t see how he would improve our defence.

    • Hunter says:

” One more CB and I think we’ll be set. I just hope it’s not jagielka – can’t see how he would improve our defence.”

Completely agree. We already have Koscielny who is just a French version of the same exact player. Look where that has gotten us.

  • k.boa says:

enough of the heap for da new comer pls lets wait to c what is in him ppl n tell wenger we need more new playas pls

  • mark says:

yes gervinho is the speedy natural winger we have been looking for, and who knows what impact miyaichi can have.
arshavin i think will bounce back to and have a big season to redeem himself.
i think Songs spot is well at risk.
    sagna vermaelen djourou gibbs
    wilshere
    walcott nasri cesc gervinho
    RVP

squad: frimpong, song, ramsey, koscielny, chamakh…..
lots of depth and competition there.
give walcott more experience up front when we are smashing teams, moving nasri to a wing and bringing ramsey on.

  • Nikko says:

His forehead…. Cant see it in that picture! Yeah, Gervinho’s looking great. Im pretty sure he’s not gonna do a Chamack. I would think two more signings, a LB and CB but one more atleast.

Foward to next season. Gooners are coming..!

  • Arsenal1Again says:

To Davi. Are you on drugs mate? The stuff you said about Overmars is delusional.

The thing with Overmars was that his goals were MATCH WINNING goals. How many of Theo’s goals won a match?

    • Davi says:

I’m not delusional. I love overmars, and I understand it was a different team he played in that was more defensive, and he was a massively important outlet, and that he was a better player than theo currently is (remembering that he was older than theo, and had already won the CL with Ajax before he joined).
I was just giving the facts. They don’t prove that theo is better than overmars was (I’m quite aware that the opposite is true) but they do show at least that theo isn’t half as bad as Zeki was saying. That was my main point.

In truth these facts also show that people remember these greats with a little too much reverence. Overmars was a great player, but he wasn’t going around winning every game for us, he did his job and won us quite a few games with his pace, skill and finishing. Theo did his job for us last season, and even if he isn’t scoring the winning goal every time (I have no idea how many of his goals were actually the winning goal), he really is contributing to us win games with his goals, and perhaps even more importantly, with his assists.

      • Hunter says:

The reason we look back on them with such admiration and joy is because they were winners. They were strong mentally as well as physically and knew how to win things. They weren’t running around courting other teams and blabbing on about how they could do better elsewhere, etc. They put their hearts and souls into this club and made it one of the best in the world while the current side is packed with underachievers and players with super sized egos who have accomplished absolutely zero.

  • Stan The Man says:

Walcott and Gervinho on both sides of the wings is a deadly combination . They have pace and there’s no doubt that Arsenal are currently the best counter attacking side . It’s a pity Cesc is leaving or we’ll be seeing his deadly passes together with the two’s deadly paces . Arsenal would have become a deadly side to watch .

Chamakh has been really ineffective . He got a lot of chances and I’m not saying just in these pre-season friendlies but the past season and he always hesitates to shoot that it looks like he’s afraid of scoring . If he had been more decisive he would have banged in a lot of goals for the Gunners by now . Same to Jack Wilshere .

  • RGunner says:

You are a little bit hard on Chamakh. If we were in the all four competition in february it’s because he were there.
Don’t forget he came from the “Ligue 1″ which is not as intense as the Premier League.
Gervinho is lucky because all the strikers are here and he will play less than Chamakh last year.
What Wenger should not forget is that in January 2012 it’s gonna be the “Africa Cup of Nations” and we will lose Chamakh and Gervinho, hopefully Van Persie will be fit :)

    • Stan The Man says:

I don’t think I’m being hard on Chamakh but it seems like he lost confidence or something . If he goes to the African Nations Cup along with Gervinho and RVP gets injured , we’re so dead if Arshavin has to come out to play the center striker again .

  • Teddy Arsenal says:

Please Stay Cesc& Nasri,, Sign In Cahil, Samba or Jagelika. Sign out Almunia & Squlilachi.
    My Formation 2011/2012
    1. Vito Mannone
    2 .Sagna,,,,,,5. Cahil,,,,6. Koselny 3. Vermalen.
    4 . Fabregas,,,17. Song,,,,19.Wilsher
    14 .walcott,,,,,,,,,10. Vanpersi,,,,,,8. Nasri.

I wish to be a Champion in coming Season.
    Teddy Arsenal.

  • soccersurf says:

Have a question, need an answer -
WHY NOT WESLEY? He is valued at 35 million, we can sell Cesc for at least 35 million. He would be PERFECT for arsenal. Wages may be too high?! He would team well with RVP and could make us the best team in the world (if we buy a CB)
I bet he would be up for it as well

    • Chris says:

There aren’t many players who I consider on the same level as Cesc.

But Sneijder is one of them.

    • LFS GUNNER says:

Sneijder and Van Persie just doesn’t get along, not professionally, but personally. I would love to have him (Sneijder), but I rather keep RVP.
Have you seen RVP playing in his national team? I’m sure you have, maybe is just me but it seems like he’s not comfortable at all.

      • Sadie says:

This is true… There’s been a bit of tension between the two in the Dutch side. RVP has hardly been as effective as he is at Arsenal and I believe that is because he has to rely on passes from Sneijder et al who prefer (and are able) to score goals themselves.

  • Bouba says:

Sneijder is a more complete midfielder than Fabregas…
I even consider Nasri to be better than Fabregas…

Both have less assists in them but they more skills with the ball and they have better defending qualities, especially if they are playing in the middle (Wenger should realise it and put Nasri where he belongs).

    • frog says:

you consider nasri to be better than cesc? way to flush all of your credibility down the toilet.

  • soccersurf says:

Should I start the Wenger buy Sneijder bandwagon?! Also saw we sold JET today?! Really… why not give him another pre-season or loan him out. He may be a better option than Chamhak

    Anyways CESC FOR SNEIJDER!

  • Haris says:

I just find out that Walcott had a minor ankle injury, I hope its nothing serious.

    • Hunter says:

I swear he is made of glass.

  • Sadie says:

Has Honda been snapped up yet, btw? Think he’s a great player. By no means a replacement for Cesc but a great addition to any team I reckon.

  • Arsene Gunner says:

Hi Guys, first time on this page.

Listen, the major Problem we have is: Injury. Even If Cesc and Nasri would leave, we can win all the Trophies. I don’t know why but our Players have legs like glas. When we can get out of this Injury-Virus there will be Trophies.

Look at Ramsey, Willshere, Frimpong, Miyamachi, Walcott, Vela!!!; No one in the league has that good players at this age.

With Gervinho we could make a big big signing, there is now only a CB, LB left. With Vela we have a great Sub for RVP. I heard that Mata is on the Way, this would be great too, so we can sell Nasri. Cesc and Nasri should leave, so the Players can go for a Season without that horror gossips that we have year for year.

I love you all guys, Keep believing in Arsene and Arsenal.
