Jay Emmanuel-Thomas: The reason why I decided to leave Arsenal

Written by Renzo on July 27, 2011 – 4:30

The Gunning Hawk - ForumJay Emmanuel-Thomas and Carlos Vela

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, one of Arsenal’s most promising youngsters, is no longer a Gunner after he accepted a move to Ipswich Town.

The versatile Englishman, used as left back, left winger and centre-forward during his three years at senior level, joins Paul Jewell at Ipswich for an undisclosed fee after loan spells with Blackpool, Doncaster Rovers and Cardiff City.

Ahead of next season, the strong 20-year explained that his career reached a stage where he needs regular football, something that manager Arsene Wenger could not guarantee as he added that he was impressed with the way the Tractor Boys are building for the future as they are looking into building a competitive side for next season’s Premier League.

On his Twitter account, Emmanuel-Thomas showed his gratitude to Arsenal for what they have done during his time in London and for helping him in developing as a player.

On why he left Arsenal, the youngster said:

Obviously it came to the stage in my career at Arsenal where I needed to be playing games. I had a good time at Arsenal and I’m going to miss all the boys but my future is about me and I needed to move on.

I was impressed with what Paul Jewell had to say – and the team he is building. I know he is looking to bring in more players and it’s the club’s ambition to get in the Premier League. That’s my goal as well – to play in the Premier League with Ipswich.

Thank you to Arsenal FC for everything they have done for me and [for] making me the player I am today. I wish everyone there all the best. Peace and love.

My new club and home Ipswich Town. 6th August, let’s get this season started! Let’s go Tractor Boyz!

Best of luck JET……I am sure you’ll do well at Ipswich and hopefully make it to the premier league one day!

  • Simmer 10 says:

Arsenal let you go ! That’s the truth.

  • A.M says:

Such a waste. He would have been better then Bendy and Chamakh put together anytime

  • Ekeh sunday says:

Jay, i will all miss your powers. But all the same we wish you all the best to as you pursuit your new carrier with the tractors. You will always be remembered cos once an arsenal is always an arsenal. I love.

  • Aussie Jack says:

Sorry to see you go lad. Maybe you should have demanded 100K a week and threatened to join Manchester City….seems to be a winning formula. Did my navy training near Ipswich so there`s a bit of a `Tractor` boy in me….good luck ,see you at Emirates..

    • jonny gunner says:

      Aussie Jack……………was it Shotley ?

      • Aussie Jack says:

HMS Ganges……Faith, Hope and Charity (what we need at Arsenal.)

  • Paul says:

Shame it didn’t work out. Thought he was going to be a good player for us. Just one point: he was actually our longest serving player. 12 years at the club, joined when he was 8…

  • stantheman says:

Apart from Simmer, everyone else has something nice to say about the guy. Shame!

  • Chris says:

All the best Jay, he was one who impressed me last summer and I find it ridiculous to say that this is a good move because of his attitude. These are young men who earn a lot of money, who need to be educated off the pitch, that is what managers are for. On the pitch he was class, I’m afraid we lost a gem.

  • gt says:

Ipswich happens to be my second favorite team so I wish JET the best. I hope you’ll score many goals against ManUre and Chelski, just don’t score against us!!

    • Aussie Jack says:

JET….If you score against Arsenal I for one won`t hold it against you, that`s our problem not yours….but you`re only allowed one. lol

  • Emmanuel says:

i wish u d best of career luck. I particularly will miss u. Go well

  • Hunter says:

Sad to see him go and I hope he does well and his team gets promoted.

Way to go with class. A lesson that needs to be learned by a number of our other players. Cesc, Nasri, Denilson, Bendtner are you listening?!

  • cesc says:

he could have been some player for us, wenger will regret this in a few years….

i wouldnt be surprised to see him at one of the top premier league clubs in a few years.

when you look at what the other acedemies are producing, we are actually spoilt for quality (bartley, JET, lansbury, frimpong etc). most other clubs would be desperate to have even one of these players coming through, its just a shame that we cant get more of them into our first team – they are young, english and would actually care about playing for arsenal unlike a lot of our first team.

im starting to think that wenger definitely favours the foreign players over english talent, unless they are really exceptional (like wilshere)

  • jko09 says:

And how much did we just bid for Lukaku? We’re really gonna pay for this one. Loan moves would have been find at this point in his career.

  • DD in LA says:

What’s the point of the academy? As usual we plough years of money, staff and coaching effort even get them into england Unders, so they can leave and play for someone else and even score against us. Really, why do we bother. Most if the first team people associated with the Academy actually were brought in nearly ready and were only in it for a year or two. The romantic idea that we find diamond in the rough players at 15 and invest in them for the big payoff just doesn’t happen. We should stop pretending it’s anything more than a nice community youth program and reassign staff accordingly to things like how we can prevent Woolcot injuring his ankle–again.

  • Arsenal1Again says:

That should read, “I had a really bad attitude and Arsene Wenger saw I was another Jermaine Pennant and the guy just doesn’t have the patience with the likes of me, so he sold me.”

This is because it’s the truth. As for someone saying Nasri will be the Captain, there’s no chance of that. Nasri can’t even play in Cesc’s position on the pitch and won’t be. I know that’s Nasri’s favourite position, but he’s not good enough. Not when we have better players like Ramsey and Wilshere.
