Benfica vs Arsenal, 2-1: Full time analysis and player ratings

Written by Chris on August 7, 2011 – 0:45

The Gunning Hawk - ForumEusebio Cup, Benfica vs Arsenal

It is not easy to summarise this summer’s pre-season, a summer of expectations, a summer of very, very disappointing results.

We played six games in less than a month: Malaysia All-Stars XI, Hangzhou Greentown, Cologne, Boca Juniors, RB New York and Benfica and the only two teams we were capable of beating were the very poor Malaysia All-Stars XI and the not-so-impressive Cologne showing the same defensive problems we showed last season and the same problems in the final third that Dennis Bergkamp mentioned last year in April, 2010.

I’ll be honest. For the last few seasons I was always very optimistic going into the new season because the squad, albeit some minor fixes, was one I believed could go on and win the Premier League. This year, I’m afraid I have to agree with those believing that our objective should be to finish in the Top Four because simply put, we’re not good enough.

Next week we will pay a visit to Newcastle to challenge them in front of 52,000 loud and hungry fans with no Cesc Fabregas in midfield and with big question marks hanging over the fitness level of Jack Wilshere, Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott, Robin van Persie, Kieran Gibbs and Thomas Vermaelen.

What I found shocking tonight was the attitude of the players, especially in the second half. Players like Henri Lansbury and Marouane Chamakh, giving the ball away and looking uninterested in winning it back even if today’s was a rare opportunity to impress ahead of the new season.

Others, like Andrey Arshavin and Tomas Rosicky looked sharp at the start of the game but were pretty much anonymous as the game went on with the Czech making schoolboys errors in the first part of the second half. See, the problem is that experienced members of the squad disappointed and the young ones didn’t show the eagerness one would expect from them.

Most likely you will ask me, “So what’s the solution to the problem”? Well to start with, we need experience. We need – as I said earlier – a Clarence Seedorf who understands when a player is having a shocking game, approaching him as he did this afternoon with Ignazio Abate towards the end of the first half against Inter Milan to tell him not to panic, advising him on what is the right thing to do.

And we need fresh blood in the defensive department. Enough of Sebastien Squillaci and enough of Kieran Gibbs who would be a much better asset in midfield. We need a centre back and a left-back and for all those who are still “optimistic” because the transfer window closes in 25 days, yes, it does, but Newcastle is not 25 days away, it’s 7 and if they are smart they will attack us from the left, for obvious reasons.

Anyway, as they say, tomorrow is another day and next week is another game. I hope that my fears will turn out to be unfounded but if I had to bet all my belongings on next week’s away game against the Magpies, there’s no way I will pick the Gunners as winners.

As always, whether you agree with my ratings or not, submit your own at Arsenal Interactive and make sure to share them on Twitter and Facebook.

Player Ratings

Szczesny: 6 – We kept the Benfica forward line quiet in the first half, reason why Wojciech had very little to do. Disappointed, however, with the way he failed to understand Thomas’ intentions in the 7th minute of the game.

Djourou and Vermaelen: 6,5 – These two did well together as we kept a clean sheet in the first half. Alongside Sebastien, Thomas struggled although he can’t blame the Frenchman for the way he was easily beaten when we conceded the first goal.

Sagna: 5,5 – Uncharacteristic poor game from Bacary who was caught out of position in at least two occasions in the first half. Worrying, the way he just jogged back when Benfica were on the counter in the 17th minute of the game and the way he gifted them a half-chance in the dying minutes of the first half.

Gibbs: 7 – Best player in the first half, 8/10 hands down. Did well to clear the danger in the 16th minute of the game, assisted Robin when we took the lead, made another good defensive tackle in the 42nd minute but, and this is a but that places Kieran back to square one, he was easily beaten when Benfica equalised.

Song: 6 – Not the best of starts to the game for Alex but recovered as the game progressed. Guilty of giving the ball away in midfield but his assist for Robin in the 31st minute was delicious.

Rosicky: 5 – I honestly cannot draw a conclusion on Tomas. He looked sharp in the first part of the game but made schoolboy errors such as the one which led to the yellow card or a terrible pass in the first part of the second half.

Ramsey: 5 – Not much from Aaron. Two years ago I honestly thought he could take over from Cesc but it seems he still needs two years to be “there”. Too slow and his vision is not that good either.

Arshavin: 6 – Forced a low save from the goalkeeper in the 13th minute of the game and looked lively earlier on but faded away as the game went on.

Gervinho: 6,5 – Lively. Very good run on the left in the 5th minute of the game, assisted Robin with the head minutes later with the Dutchman in an offside position and did extremely well to beat his man on minute 12. Having said that, he twice failed to cross the ball going on his own but in a way this means that he’s not shy to go on his own, meaning that he already settled down at Arsenal.

van Persie: 6,5 – Quiet first 20 minutes of the game for Robin as he wasted the aforementioned chance after Alex Song’s brilliant through ball with a chip. But, two minutes later he was ready to meet Kieran’s cross to give us the lead.

(Subs)
Fabianski: 6,5 – Questions will be asked on the second goal but he produced two very good saves in the 66th and 89th minute of the game.

Squillaci: 4 – The facial expression of the Arsenal girl who saw Sebastien stepping on the pitch for second half action said it all, really. The way he was beaten in the 59th minute when they scored the second was, honestly, embarrassing to see. All this, by the way, from the one who according to Arsene “has a quiet, reassuring presence at the back”.

Jenkinson: 5,5 – Disappointing. Failed to play the offside trap properly in the 52nd minute with Benfica hitting the bar.

Chamakh: 4,5 – He was our only striker in the second half but for a reason that beats me, he opted to move on the left where he made no impact whatsoever.

Traore: 7 – Impressed. We had a lot of defending to do in the second half and I must say he passed the test with flying colours. Hard decision for Saturday but if I had to choose, I would start with Armand.

Frimpong: 6 – Gave away possession often but offered protection to the back four by using his strength to perfection on the edge of the penalty box.

Lansbury: 4,5 – See his 22:19 tweet.

Miyaichi: 5,5 – Made a number of nice runs on the left but too easily dispossessed as he couldn’t cope with the strength of the Benfica defensive department.

Miquel: No Vote – Not enough to rate.

Come on Chris give Squillaci a brake if hes not good enough then hes not good enough blame Wenger for buying him.

Hes old and hardly gets played its no wonder he plays rubbish no need to call him a girl.

        • santori says:

He doesn’t need any “brakes” he is slow enough as is.:D

        • Savage says:

Agreed. The goal by Nolito was a terrific touch of class and it’s hard to blame Squillaci or Fabianski for it. Sometimes people just look for something to blame and a bit of perspective is in order – give credit to Nolito.

  • Danish Gooner says:

Egomaniac: Someone always putting himself in the centre of all things.Person willing to sacrifice all good to enhance his own reputation.A person often placating and saying things he dont believe but fooling people to believe that he is the end all ,aka Wenger.

    • pdxArsenal says:

I like what happened today. If we assume we knew nothing, Benfica has exposed our weaknesses. We need one strong midfielder (I agree with Chris, Ramsey need couple more years) and one defender. Also, Arsenal has melted down in the second half that happened in some vital games + last quoter of the season in the previous year . So, we need someone with very strong personality in addition to RVP leadership. We do have time and I am sure someone will be added to Arsenal.

  • goonerdan says:

forget everyone else, i have confidence in them for this season..

but Squillaci, NO, just NO. He’s a curse to Arsenal. I was gonna cry tonight, but Tottenham is on fire so i’m not.

    • gooner montreal says:

      sq18 , rosicky , bunch of joke

    • Usagunner says:

Guys it is hard to watch but give them a break.. A b team at best an once we have the first team squad ready we will be fine. Can’t blame them for playing bad when there are so many substitutions and changes. Get rid of the news get a few games under our belt and move on. We will be fine.. Gervonio is good and will be a great addition to this years team.

      • santori says:

        Dissapointingperformance second half.

But remember, we were good first half.

There i a similar pattern to the pre-season games. First half strong, second half shite.

        Why?

Wenger takes off a couple of crucial pieces of the jigsaw (this time, RVP, Song and Sagna) and it imeiately affes the team.

Once they came off, Benfica started enjoying possession (Helped as well by them putting on the excellent Axel Witsel and Pablo Aimar)

Therefore to put things into perspective, our second/third choice team is not good enough (remembering that we are missing in the 2nd half the sevices of jack wilshere, Koscielny, RVP, Song, Sagna, not to mention players of Fab ad Nasri’s calibre)

That said, I do think it highlights that we have still a bit to go to add depth.2-3 players IMO.

      • mano'gunner says:

The problem is knowing Arsenal’s luck with injuries, most of this B team will probably be playing as first choice come mid season

  • johnson says:

i think miyachi needs one more season in feynoord the lad needs to get stronger

    • Haris says:

I think you are being too harsh on him, he played in a half were we couldn’t get the ball. Tell me one good player in the second half, Gervinho?, Chamakh?, Ramsey?, Rosicky?.
See nobody, so lets first put him on the pitch with Cesc, Nasri, Song, Wilshere, van Persie and the others and then we will judge.

      • santori says:

        Absolutely right.

Myaichi impressed me with his use of the ball and general intent in getting physical, not to mention take defenders on.

He looks like he will improve very quickly with a regular round of games.

      • kelly says:

plus he(miyaichi) was on the receiving end of an intimidating tackle that was not even penalized.ramsey and rosicky are average right now. gervivho???? brave n adventurous but i reserve my opinion 4 later.fabregas is just too important to the arsenal system 4 us to be still talking of will he/won’t he. coz if fab leaves we need two players to replace him n a change of system this state of affairs portray pure incompetence on the mgt of arsenal.

    • Northbanksy says:

Has Miyaichi been granted a work permit yet???

      • saju says:

Yes, to work in Japan ..he he he

  • ne says:

it can’t be help. Hope lady luck is on our side these season….lets pray together fella..amen.

  • Jack says:

A good assessment but I can’t agree about Vermaelen’s rating. He was the wrong side of Aimar and somehow was turned forcefully by the Argentine midget. I can’t understand why Vermaelen gets so much praise. Last season he was as good as Booby Moore without even kicking a ball and the season before Gallas made his job look easy and was clearly the man carrying the back line. To my mind we need not one, but two centre-halfs.

    • alliej says:

Stop wasting your time analyzing this team they are not worth it

      • gooner montreal says:

this team is a joke , there is no point to support this team .

        • santori says:

bear in mind the team that played the second half and slippped two goals was without RVP, Song and Sagna (not to mention Koscielny, Djourou, Nasri and Fabregas)

For you to summarily dismiss them is a bit of a joke.

That said, at least it should (hopefully) reinforce to Wenger that :

          1) Squillaci is pants
          2) Gibbs and Jenkinson are still a bit suspect
          3) Frimpong is strong but still lacks experience
          4) Rosicky will only last one half (as does AA)
          5) Chamakh is worryingly in poor form.

        • Satz says:

Is anyone asking you to support Arsenal or forcing you every single second of the day to be a gooner? When you know yourself that there is no point supporting ARSENAL F.C you got thousands of teams around to choose from.Lemme help you out with a few suggestions..Man U,City(its ur wish – Birmingham,Stoke,Man) or Spurs,Chelsea..Good luck choosing one.Enjoy your season with them..Cheers mate.

    • Hunter says:

I have said this many times and gotten tons of abuse for it. I think he is decent but nothing nothing more. Compared to the rest of the defense of course he looks excellent but in actuality he isn’t as good as some would have you believe.

    • Johnny D says:

I agree, Vermaelen gets too much praise when in fact he makes crucial defensive mistakes from time to time. Letting Aimar get goalside of him when there was nothing but a helpless goal keeper standing between him and the net is a very schoolboy error.

Vermaelen is good with his distribution and his attacking on set pieces, but he still makes mistakes defensively, like getting caught high up the pitch not holding a straight defensive line, or the mistake he made yesterday.

It’s something that Vermaelen can work on and get better with over time, but I still think our best defensive pairing is Djourou and Koscielny.

  • soccersurf says:

Some troll today said Manchester United had won 14 trophies in the past 7 years. Not sure if that is true but either way it says a lot.

If SAF were our coach –
Rosicky would be gone. Who the hell does this guy think he is?! You should be sweating your spot on the team but you try stupid flick after stupid flick. Dont you realize you havent scored more than one goal in 2 years?!! Dont you realize you used to go forward with your passing now you just go sideways

Sorry, Aaron Ramsey isn’t the answer. One brilliant game followed by 4 games where he is a ghost. That just won’t cut it

Chamhak – Chris, you have been saying it this whole pre-season, it isn’t good enough. It’s not the effort, it’s the class and instinct. Today he showed absolutely nothing and his pathetic attempt to blame (talk to) Ryo about his positioning when Chamhak simply gave the ball to the other team was disgraceful.

Dont even get me started on defense. Our FIRST team defense, Verm and Johan were caught flat footed at least 3 times. Anyone who thinks this was our “B” team is wrong. The first half they didn’t score but if they were a top side team would easily have had 2.
Squilaci is just a complete joke, and for those who say we are doing something noble by not spending a lot of money, i think we spent a decent amount of Lauren K and Squilaci
We are spending money on the wrong players. Buy an established player Arsene, but one who is 26 not 31… or 33 or whatever like Silvestre

This is bad. Not that it is pre-season but that if we dont start strong against Manchester and Liverpool and Udinese and Newcastle this month the team wont be able to cope with the media and fan backlash.

    • Haris says:

Very good points. I totally agree.

If Wenger doesnt sign a CB and a LB then our aim will be a top 4 finish.

Everyone knows what we are missing, Why wont Wenger sign a CB and a LB???.

Samba for 12M (the money from Bendtner and Eboue transfers)
and a left back from the budget and that’s it.

      • santori says:

        Samba is not the answer.

Wenger will bring in the CBack. whether he is experienced enough (with talent) is somethingelse)

The question now is will he reinforce further than that.

I think the impetus will be provided by whatever decision is made on either Fabregas or Nasri (one of them will go)

If Fabregas goes, I think we need to bring in someone like MOntolivo.

He can play both playmaker and as DM (not to mention he is in his last year with Fiorentina and has Nasri issues)

Remember, If song gets injured, we have to rely on a talented but as yet inexperienced Frimpong. And both these players may have ACN commitments.

BTW, don’t agree with the assessment on Song. I thought he was again solid for us. Game started a bit jittery because the surface was slick and players had a hard time (on both sides) settling.

        • GoonerGaz says:

Agree that Samba is not the answer, but I would take him over getting nobody. Anyone is better than Squid, right?

Anyway if I had to pick between Cahill, Jags or Samba, then it would have to be Cahill, he is quick, strong, scores goals he plays with shit defenders already, so he’ll have no problem fitting in at Arsenal!

Also Cahill has just 1 year left on his contract, I can’t see Bolton allowing him to leave for nothing next year. Sounds like Wenger is waiting for Coyle to find a replacement for Cahill before allowing him to go to Arsenal.

And the stuff about Song, I thought he played shit tbh, but he is a cart horse, huge guy who will take 2 or 3 games to get fully back to fitness, he did a good impression of Denilson last night by not chasing back after losing the ball, but he is still better than Frimpong, even though I rate Frimpong massively.

Bring on the magpies, we will smash them.

      • Northbanksy says:

The lack of serious investment in the first team would suggest that the Boards aim has been top four finish for at least the past 3 seasons.

  • Fide says:

The truth is that our current squad is not good enough. It is sad too say but no way to hide the truth.

    • santori says:

Which current squad? The first team has been decent.

It’s when the reserves are relied upon that we have major issues.

      Particularly with the 4-3-3.

Benfica swamped us with 4 in midfield pressing high.

Our midfield did not seem to know how to stay more compavt in response and Frimpong was overwhelmed.

To add to this, Lansbury was thrown on and he was out of depth.

I think we are good if we have our regular midfield. anythingelse and we are going to struggle.

which brings me to injuries. Rather more worrying that RVP, Gibbs and TV all recieved knocks and may not be available for Newcastle.

  • Soccer surf says:

Rosicky is like the guy who used to be cool in high school but is still hanging out at the high school party years later. You’re not cool anymore !

    • santori says:

I would trade him in for Michel Bastos (+ some money on our end)

At very least we have fresher legs to cover LB if need be plus an extra option out wide on both flanks with the Brasilian.

However I am now not as much worried about LB as I am about RB.

Thought Sagna was solid as usual.

But Jenkinson was one dimensional and square. Nnot sure if he is at this point an upgrade over the erratic Eboue. This flank is worrisome if Sagna recieves a knock.

  • ola says:

i think it will b beta for both traore and gibbs playin on d left side n gervinho shifted to right cos gibbs can attack very well n he is a natural winger/midfielder while traore can defend n he is a defender of course.

  • mr.mosh of uganda says:

    SQUILLACI SQUILLACI SQUILLACI

  • Danish Gooner says:

Our first 11 is barely cutting it.Verminator, great in some games awfull in others basic fact is we dont have a Tony Adams or Sol or Keown in our defense, someone who is calm and collective when most needed, today Verminator and Squid especially ,embarressed themselfes last week it was Djourou playing like Gus Ceasar. You dont win championships without a quality centre back pairing. In midfield we need someone who isnt misplacing every second pass(Song) and someone with a wolf like appetite for crunching tackles, song simply is to slow and cumbersome and the midfield adds absolutely zero protection to the back line.Vieira and Petit and Parlour used to shield the back line like hungry wolfes.Up front if we miss Van Persie we will struggle to create chances let alone score goals,Chamakh is a disgrace and bendtner is on his way out,Gervinho is the big hope but he will be injured too.

    • alliej says:

If i see chamakh and squillaci play again i will stop supporting arsenal

    • santori says:

      Don’t think so.

We were solid first half and that with Djourou on the pitch.

Which just goes to prove that anyone with Squillaci will start to panic (Yes TV included)

Squillaci is a problem but it is not entirely his fault.

The moment we took off RVP( and loaded on the ineffectual passenger that was Chamakh), we negated our attack and put our midfield under pressure.

They swamped us with 4 pressing high and Ramsey did not offer Frimpong adequete cover, nor did we react and become more compact.

After that (plus their addition of the excellent Aimar, Witsel), they put our defense under pressure and we caved in.

      • Javea says:

The first half was nothing to do with DJ partnering TV. If we had Squillaci instead of Djourou we would have been okay. Did you see a handball-heading from DJ ? The guy is a joke ! Second half Benfica had better players and we our team just gave up. No leadership in the team, no tactical play to stop the Benfica. Frimpong is too static. Still there is no cover for Song. Loosing has become a habit now.

    • NZMike says:

Agree entirely, especially about Song. such a vital position and a lot of supporters still think he is adequate. Seems to be immune from criticism and quite overrated in some of his performances. It should be noted that he played in all our League defeats last season, which gives lie to a common view that we are not as good when he doesn’t play.

  • indian gooner says:

Many people keep talking about Samba/jagielka. but i feel for the high line we play, we cannot have slow players like these. AW has lost it.Thats the truth.mark my words…he will get the sack before the end of the season.unless we sign new players and are willing to let go of shit like squillaci, unless we hire a new defence coach( coz the current are defo shit given the way our team has performed during pre-season) and also a new tactician we are done for the season…still i will watch all the games s i did this one vs benfica. up the arsenal

    • gooner montreal says:

      indian gooner ,
squillaci , rosicky are no good , no good at all . I don’t understand AW anymore , I lost hope . We have a very average team , good for nothing

      • santori says:

I hope he can move them both on but it’s hard.

Put yourself in the managers shoes, even if he wanted to move some of the deadwood to make room for new arrivals, he will have a hard time.

Squillaci should be released. We didn’t pay too much for him anyway.

Rosicky cans still be useful. A team like Lyon could utilise his service (or Fiorentina). We could trade in for Montolivo or Bastos and bring down their prices a little.

        • Javea says:

I agree with you. Rosicky is still a class act and he cares. He needs better players. Yet again AW sits there doing nothing to prevent the goals during the game/transfer/training.

    • dando says:

Wenger will never be sacked. If you want shot of him then wait till his contract is up, it ain’t going to come sooner than that even if (as seems likely) we finish out of the top 4 this season

      • santori says:

You think this is bad, wait till you sack Wenger.

This is not the season to overhaul the system.

We have a good system in place. Question is how do we tweak it.

Now if you step back from being a little dramatic, you will realise that our first squad has been solid (First half displays, we have dominated and looked threatening)

I think this is a question of two halvees, one in which the gaffer wants to test the first team and the second is used to stress test the younger players(weed them out a little)

      • Simmer 10 says:

wenger will be sacked if this team implodes , which looks very possible!

  • Soccer surf says:

Indian. Based on what we have seen so far i believe you. This is just unnaceptable

  • Doublegooner says:

This squad is lifeless, managed by a has been manager.

    Top 4 ?? Dream on !

    6, 7 or 8th at best.

Season ticket holder since mid 60’s through good & bad times. Our team & manager are like the world economy….Going downhill FAST.

  • Jenny says:

Please please please Cesc, don’t leave us.
Our season depends on you staying, otherwise we will not finish in the top four if you leave.
    In Wenger we trust!

    • Doublegooner says:

      Jenny:

      Cesc has had enough.

If you still believe in ‘Arsenal We trust nonsense’ you’re deluded.

He’s the reason we’re in this mess. He’s long gone from the manager he once was.

      • santori says:

        More drama.

We were playing second half without RVP, Song, Koscielny, Jack, Nasri, Fabregas, Sagna)

Understandable to have a drop in performance, particularly as Benfica are a good side and they did the reverse loading some of their better players second half.

That said, we are still several players short.

I am quite concerned with DM. Song is solid enough but if he goes out, we are in trouble.

One option would be to role Koscielny as a back up (when we load up our new Cback)

      • santori says:

The other option if Fab is sold is to get MOntolivo in. He can both playmake and play DM which will also allow us to go 4-4-1-1.

I thought RVP was brilliant BTW playing in the hole just behind Gervinho when need be. His distribution from this position led to our goal.IF Fab leaves, I think RVP in a quasi-striker/playmaker role could be one option for us, particularly if the opponents sit deep.

  • kro says:

dont even know wat 2 say anymore bt the fact tht al b heading to mancini or kenny’s side. m tired, sincerely. its tym to legoo arsenal. we had a gud run mates’

    • santori says:

      What a fan! :D

  • Aussie Gooner Dave says:

Wenger is his own worst enemy. Not spending will cost him his job if we start badly this season. Signs are not good. His arrogance is going to cost him his job and ruin another season for us. A blind man could have seen that we have serious deficiencies, anyone would think the money comes out of Wenger’s own pocket!

    • dando says:

It does in a way, as his bonus depends (in part) on profit/loss so if we are down 3m say (Gervinho &Jenkinson in and Clichy out he will only buy if he can offload first and still make a profit. If he has made then decision not to sell Nasri and the board have made the decision not to sell Fabregas and we can’t off load Bentner & Eboue then don’t expect and signings of note. Its been the same every year, nothing to do with moving stadium.

  • Chris M says:

I have to agree with Chris about not being very optimistic about the new season, I normally believe we will have a good season but this year something just feels wrong, the Fabregas and Nasri saga is just a joke now, how Fabregas is still the Captain of Arsenal FC goes to show how much respect Wenger has for the fans and the club.
I always wan’t to believe Wenger will get it right and to keep the faith but i think that has nearly all gone now. at the end of the season he tells us next year he will put things right but it seems hes never gonna change his ways, the same staff on the bench year after year with there old glum faces never giving the team nothing, just sat there watching Wenger get more and more crazy.
I have to agree with your assessment of the players tonight I’m not a big Gibbs fan but i thought he done well tonight, but we lacked the player in the middle to open things up for us, i keep hoping Rosicky will have a good year but he just dosent seem to be all there, and yeah it does seem a bit too much for Ramsey right now.
Lets hope Wenger can sort of the Fabregas and Nasri deal, and bring in the players we need in the next 3 weeks

    • santori says:

Well…he really ought to have resolved the nasri and fab issue earlier TBH. I expect next week must be the absolute deadline.

We simply can’t afford any more wiggle room. We need to know if Fab or Nasri will intergrate back into the team or if we need someonelese and we need to move now.

      • Chris Chapman says:

Well I fear we are going to make a horrible start to the season!! The team seems lifeless and disjointed. I just hope some new blood will be bought in over the next couple of weeks. Let Fabrigas go and unload the deadwood..Spend some money PRONTO or this is going to a very bad season. Thank god the Polish goalkeeping dept is looking to have solved that problem…but as for the rest…we will be lucky to be top ten on what I have seen in pre-season.

  • woodyd says:

I agree that Armand looked good today. Calm in defense and nice job supporting in an advanced position. I do feel, though, that his trickery and desire to hold the ball in defense will be a liability.

Frimpong simply does not see the game and is wanting in the passing department. He’s a physical beast but don’t know that he has a feel/vision for the game and fits Arsenal’s system.

Miyaichi showed good hustle but needs strength and seasoning.

Chamakh was a ghost but, to be fair ,our mid-field did him (and Gervinho and Miyaichi) no favors at all. Not sure what to make of Ramsey. Completely anonymous and (I hope) capable of much more.

Arsenal truly need Fabregas to stay or to play Jack in an advanced position and find someone to provide the 2way support Jack gave last year. We also desperately need someone to partner with Vermaelen and could use a senior presence at left back as Traore and Gibbs aren’t consistent and ready.

I support Wenger but understand that he needed to sort out the Nasri and Fabregas issues earlier and desperately needed to sort out incoming transfers at the beginning of the transfer window.

I don’t have a positive feeling about the season and believe this squad will struggle to finish top 5 and fear they might not finish top 7 if morale dips.

  • Unbeaten 49 says:

    Mr Wenger:

I’m as bad footballer as squillaci, but I would play for free, so is a good bussiness for Arsenal, don’t you think?

    • frog says:

i think i may actually be better than squilaci. and i would PAY to play for the Arsenal.

      • santori says:

Go on, let’s have you on frog. can’t be any worse.

      • kelly says:

squillaci wouldn’t get into my local village side they wouldn’t take him!

  • Nuzrat says:

Now that pre-season humiliation is complete, let’s get behind the team, give it our 110 percent support and then see what happens from now until December. If we do well, great. If we don’t, I am sure deafening boos will greet our squad in every single match and we won’t be able condemn the boo boys anymore.

    • Rocky Jay says:

      Wait upto December? Why?
Why not give it to Wenger from this weekend at St James’??
As am pretty sure, without RvP, Theo, Cesc, Nasri, Wilshere…Arsenal is not winning that game!!

  • TheIceManCometh says:

Welcome to an Arsenal without Cesc and Jack. I don’t know how some of us convinced ourselves that the team would be ok without Cesc, and a committee of players would be able to fill in for him. For the first time throughout the last 15 months, I can’t imagine what this team will do without Fabregas, Wilshere, Van Persie, or Vermaelen/Koscielny. Even though the latter two haven’t been faultless (Vermaelen took the wrong side for the first goal), Squillaci and Johan aren’t very sharp right now, this might improve as the season continues and everyone regains form, but the first few games are going to be grueling. I’m not afraid of the match ups facing the team, but it would be nice to start off with some good momentum. Outside of Gervinho and Arshavin, none of the winger (even Ryo) have that sharpness needed for a decent start. Ramsey doesn’t have good chemistry with Rosicky or Nasri, and it seems like without Jack, the Song-Ramsey-Wilshere midfield isn’t as effective.

Again, I’m not too worried. It’s still pre-season and two weeks should be enough time to fix some problems. For once the left-back position provides actual offensive assistance and cover (the cover mainly from Traore and Gibbs providing most of the attacking). I’m almost willing to say that no cover is needed there. Another creative midfielder would be nice , along with an assurance center back. I still trust Arsene to make good decisions for the club, but it’s now crunch time. I’ll withhold full judgment until Christmas.

    • santori says:

It was decent first half as it was for most of the other pre-season games.

It was weak second half when Wenger tends to sent on the reserves as a stress test.

I think I’m a bit concern with Chamakh. He looks in poor form. IF RVP carries a knock, we will have a bad start.

CBack will come in and possibly someone-else in midfield if Fab or Nasri leaves. BUT looks like we need more sharp end as well! Blimey!

  • jason says:

The defense is the problem Wenger spend some money ahaha.

Like that will ever happen :P

  • Nikko says:

…. Just keep it Goonerish people, keep it Goonerish! Lol @ if we win something this year!

    Here’s to another baron season!

    In Arsene I still trust?!

  • xx says:

Arsenal needs two centre halfs ( Samba and Cahill) with Vermaleun moving to left back. Gibbs should be sent out on loan and only brought back if he shows signs of having passed defending 101. We also need a striker, Chamakh should be sold, he will not make it at Arsenal. Since we got him for free whatever we get for him is a profit. We should also get two central midfielders. Frimpong and Ramsey should go for six months loans and depending on their performance, comeback in January or next summer. Nasri and Cesc should be sold to the highest bidder even if it’s Chelsa or ManU or be replaced by Shinji Kagawa from Dortmund and Mata. I can’t believe the board and Wenger have not made the signings required and yet the season starts next week

    • LFS GUNNER says:

ok, I’m worried too, but replacing the entire team won’t get us trophies!

    • santori says:

No Samba. Not good enough. No Cahill, mediocre and too expensive.

TV next to either of Djourou or Koscielny has been strong enough with Song covering.

Problem is : when Song isn’t covering and when Squillaci has to be played.

I also think RB jenkinson could be a bit of a concern. he is no nonsense enough but he has a learning curve ahead of him.

Alex is who I want to see on. Or Haangeland. Some sort of experience head who is a leader.

  • gibbs says:

    a very bad preseason game

we should build up our confidence in preseason game but they seems not

wnnger cant say there is a lot of players cant play and cos we didnt do well. players injuryed and the reserves should able to support the team, that’s ur fault

  • Aussie Jack says:

Arsenal have done nothing in the pre season that I didn`t expect them to do….lose.

You only get brownie points (ratings) for comments if you put on a positive face or crawl up Fabregas`s arse, “please don`t leave, we love you” crap.

The truth is there was a limited amount of suitable players available in July now they have had time to analyse their situations and they`re staying put. What player in his right mind would want to risk joining a club as disjointed as Arsenal?

    Wenger, you`ve missed the boat…..again.

    • santori says:

Yes but you’re going by media reports which aren’t accurate.

We’ve never been in for Samba and Mata is questionable.

      • Aussie Jack says:

Never mentioned Samba or Mata, Never referred to any media reports it was just my own opinion.

  • Pete says:

If this team were in the Blue Square I’d still support it. Something you wouldn’t understand, being from Canada.

  • dando says:

Unless we buy first class defenders this week only one side will be scoring 4 come Saturday and it won’t be us.

We have the money, the defenders are out there waiting to be bought, what the hold up?

  • sam says:

why do we always have someone in the team to cost us games in the past 6 years?
we had almunia, senderos, silverstre and now squillaci.
it doesn’t matter if we sign new players. squillaci and chamakh will be around all season and will be picked to come in and cost us games.
i am not a conspiracy theorist but is wenger and the boards really wants trophies?
last january we needed 2 players to mount challenge they refused to buy and the team collapsed. now the team looks so bad they are not doing anything.
just like usmanov said, he will never join the boards that are happy with 4th place they are making the unacceptable acceptable.

  • Francis says:

I like Arsene Wenger. I love seeing the beautiful football that Arsenal can create when they are at their best, but I believe this is going to be a tough year for the Gunners. For the first time ever I felt like turning off a game in which Arsenal participated. It was heart-breaking to see Arsenal being thoroughly outplayed by Benfica in the second half. Yes, of course, Arsenal played the least experienced players in the second half and it showed because Benfica were men and Arsenal were boys. Wenger needs to act faster and recruit more seasoned player to assist Van Persie, Gervinho, Vermaelem, Song,Sagna, Gibbs, Djourou, Rosicky, Ashavin, Rosicky, Ramsey, and the two goal keepers that played today. Not that the the aforementioned players played great but they are the ones that are ready for the Premier League. They others could not even muster a string of passes together today. In the end it was a sloppy affair of Arsenal chopping at the legs of Benfica instead of playing the game. If Arsene’s considerable experience does not tell him that he is looking at failure I don’t know what else will inform him. Buy defense. Buy seasoned Premier League players. Snap up Joey Barton. Buy Samba or who the hell will fit. Just buy and stop that nonsense about looking for super quality. If Mancini can say City need more seasoned players to beat Manchester United, who the hell believes these young Gunners will? Do we have to fall on our knees (like Wenger did at the end of last Season) while all our hopes are dashed away? WTF.

  • sam says:

    new signings?
dont raise your hopes up, its 3 kids possible alex chamberlain, jose rodrigues and joel campbell. then he will say we have a huge squad

    • santori says:

Let’s seriously hope he understands now that Lansbury is not an option. I don’t want to wish anyone an injury but thank goodness Henderson went out injured.

IT’s down in these ranks where he is a little misguided. They have potential but they aren’t good enough to make the diff.

We look good first half but a couple of pieces out of the jigsaw and we are in trouble.

  • LeProf says:

Big problem all over the defense all fucked up.

How would the team dominate when even the strikers push backward to defend? RVP, Gervinho all moved back to help the defenders.

That shows the team pre-occupied in defending rather than scoring and winning.

Pathetic and shame for Wenger not to buy good defenders fast and let the midfield, striker focus on scoring not defending.

  • rpn_arsenal says:

The problems with our team were squilaci is a clown and so is chamakh..

  • Aussie Jack says:

First it was Denilson now it`s Squillaci, does Wenger have a death wish?

Without sounding too poetic, ” I hope the cavalry arrives on time”. (Usmanov and Dein)

  • sam says:

thats why i am wishing cesc stays with us at least for another season. i don’t believe arsene will spend 20 millions to replace him and we rely so much on van persie for goals if we use him too much he might get injured. our 4 african players will leave in january for african cup. maybe we only need 2 players now but in january we might need 2 more.
i am optimistic but a little worried.

  • Samgunz says:

No idea mate. There are many egomaniacs running the world football market and indeed the rest of the planets industries, however, Arsene Wenger is not one of these people. Victory through Harmony, that is Arsene Wenger. If he has a problem it is that he is too nice for the now ruthless, business world of football. This represents all that is wrong in the world, and arsene is anti it, he’s a passionate man, he’s a liberal man. He is one of few trying to keep business honest and fair, not to mention his work with youth, our youth academy is the perfect example of how much good he has done. Very few if any managers can boast his influence of change on one single club, trophies aside, He has changed Arsenal forever, for the better.

  • TT says:

If SAF were manager with this squad all our players would be considered world class. Jones is no more regular in the England U21s than Gibbs. However he joins UTd and suddenly he is the best defender in the world.

Our players are better than any other team in the league, but they are made to feel like they are the worst by our dreadful fans. We could buy the entire Barcelona team and they would be complaining that Xavi is too slow and that Messi is too small.

The only reason this team doesn’t win is the fans. They shake the confidence of the players, make it hard to sign players and turn referees against us. You are pathetic; take a bow, the worst fans in the world!

    • Satz says:

Absolutely spot on mate..Have not seen more moaning fans than these so called Gooners..
Our squad needs certain fixes but i do have the trust and confidence in Arsene that he would fix it before August 31.Win,loss or draw – I would still be supporting my team. And i am confident of us reaching the group stages of the UCL and as a whole have a strong start to the season.

      • Paul says:

TT, satz you two are a disgrace, the fans are the club. know the eternal law of footballdom – no one is bigger than the club. when wenger is gone, kindly see your way out as well, Arsenal are better than this.

        • Satz says:

Paul..that is exactly what i am doing..as a fan i am supporting my team. And please do not tell me what to do alright kid?And to be make it real clear i have been supporting this club for almost 26 years. So i would say mind your own business kid.

    • Davi says:

TT – I agree with you that the players are FAR better than people give them credit for, but the reason that they would be considered world class under ferguson is that he would get the best out of them. We have the class in the squad to be doing far better but the side CLEARLY needs some tactical tweaking, as does the mentality of the squad. When things don’t go well for Utd, Ferguson wastes no time in changing whatever is necessary.
Players like chamakh and squillaci are not world class exactly, but they are top level players, proven at CL level, and we haven’t seen anything like their best form, except for at the start of last season in chamakh’s case.
The last time we really did get it right tactically was in the 07/08 season, when I felt we were clearly the best side, and it took a lot of injuries and awful decisions to stop us. At that time sagna and clichy were recognised as the best fullbacks in the league, we could compete with any 3-man midfield in european football with our 2-man centre midfielders, and we had no troubles in defence with 2 short CBs and Almunia in goal. We just haven’t got it right since.

  • GUN says:

Bendtner is far better than Chamakh.

    • Satz says:

If we aint buying another striker i wish Bendtner stays..though the lad is not the best around but when called upon he does the job for Arsenal. This guy has scored some absolute precious goals for Arsenal whenever we needed them. Will miss him if he leaves.

  • kenyan gunner says:

Well Benfica are a good team and there goals were great we were very very weak it was embarrassing to witness

How will we look like playing man city ?

what if freempong and song play together could they create that midfield wall ?

the african cup will present us with loads of headaches particularly if some of our players gets injured

I am sorry we are not looking good at all and our prospect looks dim

How will Mr wenger address these issues ? time is running out

  • santori says:

Several things to be concern about

    1) Injuries. we have a lot of walking wounded around lately. Aside from the two suffering from heartache (Nasri, Fab), the rest are hopefully carrying niggles.

But we’ll need our main team (ie.First half team) for the start of season otherwise I suspect we will struggle from the get go.

    2) aside from CBack 9which is an obvious) , seems to me that we can do with better cover in : DM, RB, LB.

I think LB may be OK. I am a little concern with RB cover as Jenkinson has a learning curve (maybe Eboue will stay on), DM is worrying. Without Song, Frimpong is a bit overwhelmed (understandably as he is new) and we need to alter tactics when midfield is packed against our less experience mids.

The other major concern is the form Chamakh is in. Gervinho can play up top but I suspect after CBack, and DM cover, we may need to look into this if opportunity arise (I don’t actually see a need for a wide man quite as much so I don’t think a Mata is priority)

    3) Some of our younger players are quite obviously not up to the mark if our senior players are not available. Lansbury is completely out of depth. Jenkinson needs more time, Gibbs needs to work on balancing attack and defensive duties.

    4) Some of our older players seem a bit pass sell by date. Squillaci. Rosicky I like but I think we are better off getting a replacement now.

I’m not sure which way Wenger will go but at minimum, we need two more quality signings.

  • Akheri says:

If i see rosi, chamakh, squilach, eboue, diaby &asharvin can’t support arsenal til wenger dies

  • Hapinem says:

why do u guys border, cos wenger does not border to read our post or else he seen in is manager chamber hanging himself to death, but i hate to say this but i wish he did, pls some one tell me why is wenger nothing buying no money,or wenger is the poorest in mind or arsenal is poor

  • pinch says:

All I can say If Arsene Wenger dun change his stubborn ways of buying the right players, we will not be challenging any of the trophies at all. At best wil can only be in the top 5, quarter finals etc.Sure we do have a few good and 2 world class players. But sad to say, I have to admit Man Utd will always be there to challenge no matter what happen, Alex make smart moves, splash abit more on the players. While Wenger does the opposite. In fact, alot of fans like us do know what sort of players Arsenal can get to replace and strengthen certain departments, but it all boils down to Arsene and also the management. 6 bloody years,i dun think fans of such a world class club can have such patience and spent so much money and time to endure another 1 or 2 season without some trophies, Someone in the Top Management or Arsene needs to get the boot or transfer.

  • Willy young says:

What will the team be versus Newcastle after injuries

    scez Sagna JD Kos Traore
    Song Ramsey Rosicky

    AA Chamack Forehead

Really don’t feel this is strong enough to beat Newcastle or Udi but here is hoping?

    Bench is harder to pick

  • sedo says:

The first time I was sleeping during an arsenal game. The second half was simple poor. Squilacci go away. Wenger wake up.

  • nasty27 says:

Everyone except wenger knows that our problem is more defensive rather than offensive, but instead of fixing the defence Arsene keep getting linked with offensive players only and his buy of any importance is Gervinho who is offensive. It is a fact and it has been proven last season and the whole of the pre season that Djourou and Squillachi are just not good enough to play for WestHam let alone Arsenal, but the continue to be part of the team and they keep making mistakes, how Arsene expects different results beats logic and that is why we are never able to hold onto a lead. Yes Vermaelen made a mistake on the first goal but most of the time he is consistently good.

Another major problem which we had last season was the holding midfield role. With the exception of Song the team has no other holding midfielder, don’t talk of Frimpong please, yes he is physical but we dont need only physicality, he does not know how to make a proper tackle, his passing is awful and his reading of the game which is most important is non existent. A defensive midfielder need to smell danger and snuff it out and when he has the ball be able to hold it beyond the initial pressure and give a good pass, on this Frimpong is very much still a baby with much to learn. This exposes the team horribly should Song be injured. Teams like Barca, Man U, Real, Chelsea, Man City have atleast three good holding midfielders and there is a reason for this for this teams cannot all be wrong. Have u guys noticed we have never lost to Barca with Song on the team. This speaks volumes about the importance of that role.

What the Benfica game showed is that we do not have a strong second team, with our first team out of the way the second team can hardly win a game and to win the premiership or the champions league you need depth and we are deeply lacking it. Should we lose Fabrigas and Nasri the problem is going to be compounded for we will have only Wilshere and Ramsey( who still has much to learn) as offensive midfielders and maybe add Diaby when he is not injured( he cannot play the defensive role this has been proven on his performances in that position so far). Attack wise we still need maybe one more addition, a goal scoring machine.

So Arsene there is still much work to do on the transfer market if you could but only open your eyes. This are real problems that the team has that need to be taken care of and you have hardly three weeks. Instead of folding into your seat when we play feeling deeply frustrated or breaking the water bottle, why don’t you address this problems when you can.

  • Okorie says:

Am sick & tired of wenger’s attitude. Let him not come to Africa or he will leave wth broken head. Now my b.p is rising because of Wenger.

  • Charlie says:

Didn’t see the game, sounds like another terrible performance and very nervous ahead of the coming season but i wanted to talk about these people thinking of supporting another team. Nobody cares if you leave because the fact is you are a millstone around the neck of this great club failing to offer any support and doing nothing but complain. Fans of the other 19 clubs in the league are able to make noise for their clubs no matter how they perform compared to expectations but many Arsenal fans have never offered a single word of encouragement and are therefore of no use as fans. I too have not been so pessimistic ahead of a new season for as long as i can remember but supporting another team will NEVER be an option even if Arsenal are relegated to Div 2. I am praying for a result against Udinese, failure to qualify for the Champions League would be a disaster !

  • andrer2926 says:

so much hate on your players….arsenal fans should have more faith in their team. the poor performance at the 2nd half was due to benfica good performance, not arsenal mistakes.

  • GoonerForLife says:

I’m sorry but won’t be taking Arsenal seriously this season…that’s the only way I can keep sane. I’ll expect the worst but hope for the best…that way I won’t have my hopes up very high and when they do pull together some good results I’ll be ecstatic!!!

Sound pretty bleak and negative, I know, but I don’t think I can handle another let down this season, time to protect myself.

  • ak47 says:

im use to the agenda driven dumb pundits and arm chair know it all so called supporters who have ZERO experience in managing a team let alone a top 4 side in the prem who listen to all the brain washing drivel because all they want is to be able to brag among thier other glory hunting mates and look the big man to compensate for the lack of self esteem or their boring lives.
cant be arsed to explain why so many comments on here are dumb cos if you still cant see what arsenal are about you should piss off and go support man oil or chelski.

the only thing i hope is that the blogs magnify the doomers influence and in reality it aint that bad. bloody kids.

  • Charlie says:

Support is one thing but please, 40m transfer budget apparently available. Team clinging on to the possibility of playing in the Champions League and major players wanting out so what happens ? The weakness is the defense so we sell one of the first-teamers (albeit the worst one) and bring in nobody. Bring in a potentially excellent player but in a position where we don’t need reinforcements and spend a net of 4m. I know there are a few weeks left but if nothing happens in the transfer market before September 1st i’m gonna lose faith in Wenger entirely. Credit to him for what he’s done but i have almost lost all patience.

  • Charlie says:

and to the guy that talked about what Arsenal is about i know what Arsenal is about. Profitting from transers every season (a selling club) and buying potential on the off-chance that they’ll become stars when we’ve actually seen very little evidence that they will so far. I was content while we were qualifying for the CL every year saying “it’s a great achievment considering our finances” but now i honestly think we’ll fail to qualify and that’ll change things, dramatically.

  • Charlie says:

andrer2926, Benfinas’ good performance ? have more ambition, our club is so much better than theres’ so how is a good performance by theman excuse for our team being worse than theres’ ? It’s down to motivation, our boys just couldn’t be bothered to compete.

  • Ben says:

They’re all just picking up the wages. The ones that are left are the ones with no ambition who prefer an easy life.
