Eight Things We Learned from the Benfica defeat
Written by Jeff Patterson on August 7, 2011 9:00
1. Sebastien Squillaci
He is an absolute disgrace of a footballer and you can literally watch Arsenal fall to pieces when he walks on the pitch. The Squid has the same effect on Arsenal as taking a hammer to mirror. I started laughing uncontrollably in the 78th minute yesterday, when Thomas bombed forward on run, the ball was cut out by Benfica, and you could literally see through the television the look of complete befuddlement on Sebastian’s face, as he turned away from marking his man to chase after … thin air. If it hadn’t been for a heady tackle by Traore, Squillaci would have single-handedly turned a 3-on-1 containment into a one-on-one between the striker and Fabianski.
2. The High line
How many times have I watched Arsenal BARELY recover from being beaten with their high line? I keep thinking, wow, even a mid-table Premier League striker with pace is going to give us fits.
3. Alex Song
Looks miles behind Frimpong, and considering that Emmanuel is four years younger and missed all of last year, Alex should be absolutely embarrassed by his performances.
4. Gervinho
Looks like he’s going to be the evil-twin of Arshavin, whereas Andrey looks worthless for most the game but provides moments of lethal brilliance, Gervinho hustles and looks dangerous for the majority of the match but seems to have a lot of careless moments with the ball. Both should aspire to steal the best parts of each other’s games, then Arsene would have his own Frankenstein monster, and it would be one for all time.
5. The left-back position
Gibbs and Traore both looked good, especially Gibbs. But again, how long will it be until they are on the training table and Arsenal are looking at 3rd and 4th choices? Still, thinking positive, I have to say that Sagna/Djourou/Vermaelen/Gibbs looked the part today.
6. The Midfield
Rosicky and Ramsey were very uninspiring today, which is really disappointing. Especially Ramsey, who I’ve been praising all week. Way to back me up, Aaron. On the whole I’d say it’s been a mixed bag for him this preseason, even going back to his return last year. He’s had some great goals and moments of brilliance, equally weighed and probably overshadowed by several horrid errors and anonymous games. Definitely looking for more from him this season, if he’s going to be “the man” down the road.
7. Marouane Chamakh
Is it just me, or does Chamakh look like he has no interest in playing striker anymore? I’m not necessarily having a go at him either, but every time I notice him on the pitch, he’s being overlapped by Frimpong or Song, not to mention the rest of the wingers and midfielders. Seems to be the Arsene effect on players, Wenger teaches them every aspect of playing offense, except for shooting the ball! All I’m saying is that Chamakh would probably do a bang-up job at centerback, as it is now Vermaelen takes more shots than him anyways.
8. Hopes for the season
Right now, I see a first team that is barely, JUST BARELY, sufficient to finish strongly in the Premier league, maybe win it all. But beyond that first team is an abyss of talent, there’s just nothing there. All that’s currently standing between Arsenal and a Premier League Table FREEFALL is Robin van Persie’s ankles and Cesc Fabregas’ hamstring.

Arsenal News 24/7

I’ve seen one of my dog’s faeces show more intelligence than Squillaci.
And who’s to blame? Stubborn, arrogant Wenger.
