Eight Things We Learned from the Benfica defeat

Written by Jeff Patterson on August 7, 2011 – 9:00

The Gunning Hawk - ForumEusebio Cup, Benfica vs Arsenal

1. Sebastien Squillaci

He is an absolute disgrace of a footballer and you can literally watch Arsenal fall to pieces when he walks on the pitch. The Squid has the same effect on Arsenal as taking a hammer to mirror. I started laughing uncontrollably in the 78th minute yesterday, when Thomas bombed forward on run, the ball was cut out by Benfica, and you could literally see through the television the look of complete befuddlement on Sebastian’s face, as he turned away from marking his man to chase after … thin air. If it hadn’t been for a heady tackle by Traore, Squillaci would have single-handedly turned a 3-on-1 containment into a one-on-one between the striker and Fabianski.

2. The High line

How many times have I watched Arsenal BARELY recover from being beaten with their high line? I keep thinking, wow, even a mid-table Premier League striker with pace is going to give us fits.

3. Alex Song

Looks miles behind Frimpong, and considering that Emmanuel is four years younger and missed all of last year, Alex should be absolutely embarrassed by his performances.

4. Gervinho

Looks like he’s going to be the evil-twin of Arshavin, whereas Andrey looks worthless for most the game but provides moments of lethal brilliance, Gervinho hustles and looks dangerous for the majority of the match but seems to have a lot of careless moments with the ball. Both should aspire to steal the best parts of each other’s games, then Arsene would have his own Frankenstein monster, and it would be one for all time.

5. The left-back position

Gibbs and Traore both looked good, especially Gibbs. But again, how long will it be until they are on the training table and Arsenal are looking at 3rd and 4th choices? Still, thinking positive, I have to say that Sagna/Djourou/Vermaelen/Gibbs looked the part today.

6. The Midfield

Rosicky and Ramsey were very uninspiring today, which is really disappointing. Especially Ramsey, who I’ve been praising all week. Way to back me up, Aaron. On the whole I’d say it’s been a mixed bag for him this preseason, even going back to his return last year. He’s had some great goals and moments of brilliance, equally weighed and probably overshadowed by several horrid errors and anonymous games. Definitely looking for more from him this season, if he’s going to be “the man” down the road.

7. Marouane Chamakh

Is it just me, or does Chamakh look like he has no interest in playing striker anymore? I’m not necessarily having a go at him either, but every time I notice him on the pitch, he’s being overlapped by Frimpong or Song, not to mention the rest of the wingers and midfielders. Seems to be the Arsene effect on players, Wenger teaches them every aspect of playing offense, except for shooting the ball! All I’m saying is that Chamakh would probably do a bang-up job at centerback, as it is now Vermaelen takes more shots than him anyways.

8. Hopes for the season

Right now, I see a first team that is barely, JUST BARELY, sufficient to finish strongly in the Premier league, maybe win it all. But beyond that first team is an abyss of talent, there’s just nothing there. All that’s currently standing between Arsenal and a Premier League Table FREEFALL is Robin van Persie’s ankles and Cesc Fabregas’ hamstring.

I’ve seen one of my dog’s faeces show more intelligence than Squillaci.
And who’s to blame? Stubborn, arrogant Wenger.

  • Bob Jones says:

    Agreed

    • carmelo pace malta says:

don’t agree with both of you mates, come next week and you will see a different arsenalthe trouble with most of you,is loosing faith with our players and manager. What bothers me most,is the the referrees.handling of our games

      • Aussie Gooner Dave says:

Don’t go worrying about refs, we’ve got much bigger cancerous issues!

  • goonerdan says:

i think it’s just a confidence thing, once a few wins are under our belt, especially the one at home to the scousers, there’ll be a new energy about them.

And another thing, i’m hardly gonna be going to home matches this year, only away ones, the home support makes me want to commit, you guys need to cheer up haha:)

    • serge says:

      vomit?

      • goonerdan says:

        commit – suicide

        • serge says:

          never heard that one haha

            learn something new every day;)

    • chris from Cambridge says:

I regret to say that – with effect from late last season – the players themselves have given up on the Wenger approach. They know they just can’t do it. Senior players want to leave or have left. Junior players will stay to be trained up and to make a name for themselves before leaving when ready to do so. Even the internationals who are staying (RVP, Theo) give out messages about buying better players and mixing more strength of play with purist technique.

This whole thing will end in tears.

  • . says:

Never as an arsenal fan have i approached the beginning of a season so hopeless, does the proffesor really care?

    • chris from Cambridge says:

Of course he cares (!) but he does not know any different. He is too fixed in his ways and beliefs to change now. We are in for a very sad time of it.

  • crusifix says:

it was torturing watching Arsenal play yesterday, wenger has really lost it + God we are so dead without fabregas who i suppose is d second best in dt position in d world

    • chris from Cambridge says:

The whole squad seems to lack belief and I am not surprised. There is nobody to rally them – all nice blokes in a comfy dressing room.

  • SeattleGooner says:

    Just a quick footnote,

It should be mentioned that this was originally written in the context of an angry email to a friend, and as such has undergone a bit of “cut and paste” to make it presentable in blog format.

Words and opinions are all mine, however.

  • Danish Gooner says:

Agree entirely with Saul Okonda. We are so short it is an embarressemt,Wenger have turned a bad squad worse, you couldnt make it up.None of the players have performed to their supposedly standard except Wilshire,Frimpong and Wilshire.Wenger should be but to the sword for his lack of improvement to this squad.

  • colesy says:

I watched the whole game on ESPN last night. I’ve watched all the pre-season stuff and there is absolutely no change from last season. No improvement. Still zonal marking and panic everytime the opposition attack (and from a supporters point of view- an expectation that the opposition will score). Many players who were singled out for criticism last season have maintained last year’s poor standards (Squillaci, Rosiky, Chamakh). Alex Song was vastly over-rated for me last season. I felt his passing was very poor -often giving the ball to the other team far too easily, his distribution was limited to a sideways pass or back to the defence. His tackling was also very poor and often he conceded free kicks- so far this pre-season, he has continued at the same sub standard level. For me he is not the answer to our Defensive Midfield problem- he is more of a liability.

What has Wenger done since the end of May when he promised a busy summer of activity? He’s brought in Gervinho who was ‘wasted’ after 45 minutes and did absolutely nothing in the second half – no wonder he has been substituted after one half in each game. Jenkinson has played something silly like 14 games for a League One team before signing for AFC. Not exactly the quality we need. Nor the central defender EVERYONE and his dog said throughout the whole of last season we desperately needed to shore up our leaky defense. No Wenger has been sidetracked by the whole Nasri and Fabregas saga. He’s been too indecisive and talks about wanting both to stay. Who honestly believes that even if the club didn’t end up selling these players that they would play with pride, with their hearts on their sleave and give absolutely everything to the cause? I respect Fabregas’s decision to return to Barca- I don’t have a problem with that. He’s stayed silent and not been outspoken against his current club. I understand that Arsenal have a minimum price too and they won’t go below that. But what has been allowed to happen is disruption to Wenger’s spending plans. It’s clear he won’t go out and buy anyone until Fab or Nasri or both are sold. This will probably happen at the end of the window – too late for Wenger to sign a replacement and he’ll moan that he didn’t have time/control etc, etc. He’s been told we need a Central defender for ages and not signed one. We’ve seen over the past month that the glut of injury prone players (Diaby, Walcott, RVP etc) are going to be missing for large sections of the new season and last night’s game showed the lack of quality we have in reserve.

4th place is our maximum hope this season, but I believe 5th is realistic or even 6th. The silver lining is that this should prove to be the end of Wenger’s reign. In Wenger We Rust !!

    • chris from Cambridge says:

      Agree totally, very well put.

I really don’t think Wenger knows which way to turn. He is hamstrung by a business model which means he cannot sign costly players till he has the money in from transfer sales. Barca are taking the piss to punish us and may (or may not) pay the right money for Cesc on the last day of the window. There is nobody on the Board of Directors who knows much about football. AW has surrounded himself with Yes Men like poor old Pat Rice who recognised he should retire but Wenger persuaded him to stay on.

Wenger can’t change, won’t change and the whole thing looks very sick..

    • YOZZA says:

There is nothing wrong with our defence!AW said so!

      • NIckw says:

I hope you are being sarcastic – of course you because only a complete fool would believe that.

    • tonygunner says:

If you’re right (and I think you probably are) it means that we have been lied to by AW and the chairman that funds are available to buy new players.

  • Matt Gunn says:

Actually the first half was good with the second half a poor reflection of the first. First half saw good defense and attacking and plenty of ball control and possession taken from a solid Benfica.
It was obvious Fab, Nasri, Walcott and Wilshere were missing but not a bad job without their influence.

Second half showed some players lack of experience and those who had any must have left it at home.
Hope the injured from last night will mend soon as with all our other injured. Why does Arsenal have so many injured always – why? why?

    • chris from Cambridge says:

Why injuries ? Partly because they are taught purist intellectual football and don’t know how to avoid trouble in the physical jungle of top football. Partly because they are picked and developed for their technique and normally give away weight and power to their opposition. Partly bad luck ?

  • ne says:

its looking bad, anybody notice how relax aimar is, running riot in midfield with a smile. while our 2nd string player running and tackling like a mad man even though it was just a friendly match….bad management and judgment by AW. He said that he didn’t expecting the outcome in these transfer, but we certainly do predicted correctly in what would happen in these team if he fail to strength the squad…adios wenger.

  • nicky says:

    Seattle Gooner,
If the blog has undergone a bit of “cut and paste”, I hate to think what the original looked like. What is left is a total assassination job on Arsenal players doing their best on a pre-season away game.
Your description of Squillaci as “a disgrace” is in itself disgraceful. No professional footballer plying his trade honestly, to the best of his ability should be called “disgraceful”.
(except perhaps guys like Barton, Shawcross and the like).
Not many true Arsenal fans will share your misguided view of “an abyss of talent” at the Emirates, particularly at this point in the year and one wonders about the value of such a negative and biased outlook on an Arsenal site.

    • YOZZA says:

yep we only have to look at how many thumbs down you got to see that you are a minority!Loser!

      • frog says:

i tend to agree with nicky. i dont think squillaci is good enough at this point to be our third or fourth choice cb, however, he is/was a full french international centre half who has forgotten more about the game than most of us know it all bloggers ever will. I tihnk Seatles words were a bit harsh but the fact is, Squillaci has to go. And for you Yozza, give it a rest schmuck, at least nicky and everyone else voiced an articulate opinion. we dont need a troll on this site to point out how many “thumbs up” a comment recieves. so yes, there is a “minority, loser “here, but its not nicky or Seattle, its the troll. DNFF= do not feed the troll.

  • The BearMan says:

Where should the Bear start: A Defensive coach, a defensive coach, a defensive coach. Again I repeat Squallaci has not improved since his first game in an Arsenal shirt for the reserves. Wenger’s pride will not allow him to admit he squandered £5M on this player, who will let down the team again and again, but Wenger will go on playing him and even if it cost us games.

Rosicky is back to his old habits, whenever he is stretched and out of control will always resort to the usual back flicks and giving the ball away.

Carl Jenkinson must learn quickly from this game. Keep it simple! There are certain games when a shorter pass will be all that is required, to often he found himself in no man’s land. When the back line is not solid or unreliable his defensive duty is more important. By going to far forward he leaves a greater hole at the back and the team will be severely punished.

Gervinho is full of running, but he cannot single handedly win the game on his own. He has to conserve energy during the game otherwise there will be no end product to his darting runs.

Ramsey, long to take on the Fabergas role. Playing alongside Rosciky he will have a mountain to climb. What he has to do is practice holding the ball and creating space for himself where he can make more accurate and telling crosses. His first duty is to be aware of what is happening around him. Find a place where his colleagues can find him and he have time enough to deliver the telling ball. Get hold of some video’s of Cesc at his best. See him always looking around and moving away from the crowd, plus knowing where everyone of his colleagues are on the pitch and making those telling passes.

Arsene played a bad hand yesterday, however it prove an excellent taster to the youths of what’s to come.

    Chis Samba n Mertesaker
    Barton
    Mata n Williams
    Lukaku n Joel

End the fiasco with Cesc n Nasri and Chamakh on loan.

    • goonerdan says:

lukaku is at the bridge and that joel campbell mug couldn’t even be bothered to turn up for a meeting with Arsenalso it shows how much he thought about a club as big as ours.

      • frog says:

yes sir! i want joey barton on a free and chamack has to go. not on loan either. sell him straight up. I dont think this is asking to much. Bartons free, mata with the cesc money, Samba with the eboue/chamack money. we keep bendner, yes i said it, hes miles ahead of marouane and hes got balls. all thats left after that is a left back. i would even be ok with rolling the dice with gibbs and traore untill January if it was necassary. this is totaly possible, crap, arsene may even turn a profit here!

  • Dan says:

Arsenal, arsenal….arsenal, when will u learn? Sign a marque player or finish 6th.I’m no longer an arsenal fan,I’ve joined Chelsea.

    • zed says:

If you can do that, you never were an arsenal fan.

    • chris from Cambridge says:

      I think you mean Chelski

    • Paddywhack says:

go to chelsea and good luck. I’ve been a Gooner since 1966 and could never support anyone else not if u gave me £10000. Will support them good or bad and they are bad. I can see them finishing 10th. I’ll still support them. U were never a Gooner

    • Guna says:

      haha what a tossa!!

    • CPT says:

Never to join Chelsea but I agree with the assessment of 6th. 5th at the very best.

  • serge says:

all these problems are fixed, if problem one and eight are fixed

  • Kirwa says:

I have a feeling the British media has gained the grounds in its battle against Arsenal FC. The tragedy is that its the club fans who will bring the club to its knees and not the management. We are so quick to consume the poison that the subjective media throws our way and thus the self destruction.
I believe the garbage being packaged and repackaged everyday has found its way into the heart of what makes up the club, this is obvious from the performance and the pitch; there exists an underlying incoherence, most players exhibit nerversness and frequent panicky seizures.
The same symbolic manifestation is evident in the way we fans behave, we are ready to irrational throw comments, prepare a whole new list of players the club needs, we are so generous with abusive language towards the management and even players. In short, we lack coherence.
I think its time to separate what is possible from what is not, accept so faults and offer constructive criticism instead of everyday rants informed by a British media that is wading on the slug of mediocrity and which for what prize I don’t know is to bring down Arsenal FC.

    • Paddywhack says:

I dont follow the British press rants. But any Arsenal supporter can see that our main problems are in defence. Why have they not been fixed? Does AW not see the problems or is he just too stubborn. He is just playing into the hands of the press. Why has he not signed Samba, Cahill and Mata. Is he waiting on the Cesc and Nasri money. Surely there is money available as they have signed nobody significant in 6 years.

      • tonygunner says:

Is there money available or are we all being deceived by the board who don’t care about football, only making money for the shareholders??

  • GoonerBro says:

Every world-class team has solid CB. MU with Ferdinand & Vidic. RM with Pepe & Carvalho. Barca with Pique & Puyol..etc…etc..
As long as we couldn’t find an accompany for Vermaelen in the back… it’s just hopeless.
I agree that we are not in our best, and there are many things to do. But, if I was given a choice, I’d prefer to improve the defense area rather than offenser. Just bring 1 more world class CB. Yes, I mean a WORLD CLASS CENTER BACK. We conceded too much goal while we have no problem of scoring,.. if we look at the statistic last season.

I just can’t understand what’s in Wenger’s mind. He’s too smart, or too dumb..???

    • chris from Cambridge says:

Every other team starts at the back to deny goals against and builds forward from there. Not Wenger and not Arsenal. We desperately need a good defensive coach who does tactics but it won’t happen.

    • tonygunner says:

Neither. He’s got no money to spend.

  • silah says:

At the post match interview Wenger said that, “you could see we missed most of our players”!

Take heart Gunners, most of those fellows in Arsenal shirts were not Arsenal players… Wenger borrowed them from i don’t know where!

  • Kirwa says:

I have a feeling the British media has gained the a lot of ground in its battle against Arsenal FC. • Dan says:

News doing the round on Twitter’s that Wenger is looking to make Squilacci captain. How true is it?

  • Jose Sousa - Lisboa says:

Why you guys don’t simply accept the fact that you lost (minimally) a game against another strong team, which was playing at home, and wanted badly to win that (ugly) trophee. I’m not even a benfica fan, and as a neutral, I can say that yesterday I saw a good match, and both teams performed well. Arsenal is my team in England, and I wish you all the best for this new season.

  • Dan says:

Behold Jose Sousa-Lisboa! It looks I’m not the only one decamping from Arsenal. Why don’t u join me at Chelsea,Jose Sousag

    • rvpking says:

what are you doing here , strange

    • Paddywhack says:

      Good riddance

    • LFS GUNNER says:

Thanks but this isn’t Chelski’s blog. Maybe you’re lost?

  • mano'gunner says:

Something about Squillachi’s body language in the build up to the 2nd goal didn’t impress me. He was slow to react (Ok I’ll give it since he’s old) and then didn’t put his body in the way of the shot (inexcusable). He looked lazy to me

  • The BearMan says:

I hope what I read is not true, that Chelsea won the race for Lukaku??? That being the case Wenger has no option but to fix our defense and get a defensive coach that is worth his salt. Lukaku when he find his footing will torment and expose week defenders in the Premier League.

  • ozgunner says:

Chamakh’s worth about as much as we paid for him. He’s mentally too slow for the EPL as can be seen by the look of bewilderment on his face after he misses a play meant for him. I’ve never understood how commentators rated him.

I said at the start of the window that I would completely ignore the transfer talk but like a dope I search the web every day for a glimmer of hope. Maybe I’m just used to the pain.

  • fed says:

I dont see why you guys have a problem with sicky.. sure he is getting older and cannot bomb up and down for 90 minutes but whenever he is surrounded with quality players I cant recall when his side wouldnt have overtaken the opposition? then again I recall plenty and plenty of matches where he is surrounded with kids and losers. put cecs in a same team with kids and bclass players and he is sure to fall with them.

A good side is built with 11 quality players and a bench that can come in and actually perform a bit. Rosicky can do the job if he is given a proper team around him. we have seen it lately in the emirates cup and lastly yesterday in the first half. as soon as wenger makes the clown substitutions the team falls apart and it is easy to say that the guys that got the job done initially and were left on the pitch stranded suddenly become shait.. you guys dont say that vermaelen is shit when our defence becomes swiss chease with 1 centreclown being thrown on the pitch. he cant do the job without his pair either!

rosicky or even fabregas cant pull out their potential nearly to their fullest unless they have the matching partners around them!

seriously. I understand everybody picking on squillaci but leave the sicknote alone.

lastly I have to say that there is 1 starting position where I personally think that arsenal are desperately short atm.
It is the balancing midfielder between the technical and athletic midfielders… the postion that is rightfully wilshires. but right now there is only 2 player in the squad with even close to equal atributes with him that can fill the hole and they are fabregas and nasri.. to me it made perfect sence why we where only losely in control and winning in the first half yesterday and why we collapsed in the second half.

the position is extremely hard to fill as it requires all the atributes of a football player. defending ability, attacking ability, passing, shooting, positioning, great stamina, and above all willingness to challenge and track back.

everybody has been calling us to sign a good premier league centre back and they are absolutely right. if that position is filled and we sign an experienced player with qualities silmilar to jack wilshire there would be no problem with us taking the titles.

hey I just remember everybody talking about one.. scott parker was it??? I wonder why….

    • tonygunner says:

We lost to Benfica because AW completely changed the side in the 2nd half when we were playing with 9 reserves. Of course we didn’t maintain our dominance. In a competitve game we’d have won it. Who cares anyway, its next week that counts.

      • Bo0geyman says:

Just so you know… Benfica played with is second line in the first half then in the second they played their first line so thats no excuse!

  • Judith Le'Strange says:

The only thing I’ve learnt from our distastrous so called friendlies was tht Wenger should have been sacked six seasons ago when we started going downhill, and from what I’ve seen so far doesn’t fill me with hope for the forthcoming season. No players apart from two brought in, no defenders and unless Fabregas & Nasri are sold within the next few days we will not be signing anyone soon. It appears we have to seel before we can buy, which is in contradiction to what was said at the beginning that “we had ample funds” to enter the transfer market in a big way, lies once again. Except that this year I think we may be out of the CL after the two legs to Udinese, which might wake the board up to do something in the management line. We should sack Wenger & bring in a strong manager who will actually tell the board I want this player, that player etc & I need £x ms to purchase them. All we have is a weakling who can’t accept that two players want to leave the club & he’s basically keeping them because for one Barca won;t stump up the £40 m & Nasri for $22-25m who is wanted by Man City & in the meantime we’re stuck with the useless dross we’ve had for the past few seaons, simply because other clubs can see that the players we have to offer i.e. Almunia, Bendtner & the rest are not up to it & not worth the money we’re asking.

    • tonygunner says:

Well said Judith. And now we’ll be starting the season with none of the positional problems solved. If we miss out on CL group stage AW surely must be sacked. But the board doesn’t have the balls for that – its still 2004 and everything’s rosy!

  • Dan says:

@the Beerman.Yeah, its true,we have bought him.Lukaku will continue from where Drogba left off.BEWARE!

  • Arsenal says:

We’re going to be ripped apart by teams like Norwich. 5th or 6th is the best we can hope for, and I believe we even stand a chance to be relegated. Sad times

    • Paddywhack says:

Yes no joking. We could be relegated unless there are 3 worse teams than us. What is Pat Rice still doing in his job. and people talk about getting rid of AW – what about Kroenke and the Board as well. This look make Gillette and Hicks at Liverpool look good. Has Kroenke said a word since he bought the Club – I don;t think so. Lady B-Smith sold her shares to the wrong bloke

  • nicky says:

After the departure of the much abused Denilson, I wondered who the faithful (hatemongers) at the Emirates would pick on as his successor. What a fool I was………it was obvious it would be Squillaci. Now he has no chance of a great career at Arsenal, however well he plays .

    • rvpking says:

I have to say i usually like people sticking up for players , its a good thing , i always stood up for denilson . BUT COME ON .
squillaci is a disaster , he is 30 for a start , he really should know how to control a ball and positionally defend but he doesnt . he isnt exactly going to imrove ma ssivly and has been really really poor . im terrified when he plays .

so there is a huge difference between him and denilson

  • Arsene Gunner says:

y’al see guys, next week the prof will be bringing like 2-3 players. someone could be kagawa (brillant player) and a cb or lb. mauro zarate is on the way i think.

    • Paddywhack says:

      Not a chance

  • NIckw says:

Spot on about Chamakh, he now looks completely useless and is fast becoming the new Denilson. There wasn’t a lot to cheer about last night Frimpong was a positive and Miyaichi looked promising. The defense is still a disgrace and if Wenger’s not careful people will remember him for his pathetic attempts at building a defense rather than his titles.

  • Goons_with_Guns says:

If Wenger plays Squid one more time, they will BOTH be marked for death.

    • Goons_with_Guns says:

Wenger already is: He didn’t get Lukaku and still has not strengthened the defence.

The other question is: if Wenger is kicked out, how do you replace him? It’s a rhetorical question.

  • flying dutchman says:

What do you guys think of kalou? Now that chelsea bought lukaku they may want to offload him. He can play on the wing and perhaps provide better cover for van Persie than chamakh….

What do you guys think? How much would he cost?

    • frog says:

i think that unless he plays central defense or central midfield, hes a complete waste for us. not a bad player though. hed cost 15 id guess.

    • tonygunner says:

to flying dutchman: Far more than Arsenal can afford or say they can.

  • imax says:

chamakh could,nt do anything yesterday because he played with team B with poor wings and midfielders… we can test him with our strong squad.

    • frog says:

no. he has to go. he doesnt posses the skills to be a epl striker. A strikers job is to shoot and score goals. he doesnt have a shot. he got a few sitters at the start of last year. im calling it ” beginers luck” Sell, sell sell.

  • Kenneth says:

I sincerely feel Wenger’s policy/philosophy, is getting a better part of him for some time now. This team needs real re-enforcement in almost all departments. Its going to be the shame ole same if certain players are not sold or allowed to go and better players signed

  • rvpking says:

I dont understand why everyone goes on and on about who we havent signed yet . Wenger said august (yes i know he also said earlier at one time) and its now august and we all know he is going to bring in a few players .
people go on about centre backs . wenger has said he wants one and is getting one .
players we were linked with , cahill , samba, jagielka , scott dann , none of them have gone anywhere so there is no reason we wont sign one or two in next few weeks.

its crazy , there are hundreds of great players in the world , so just sit back and let him do business . thats my opinion anyway ,

    COME ON ARSENAL .

    • Paddywhack says:

Next few weeks – is that after we’re knocked out of CL by Udinese.

    • tonygunner says:

To RVPKing: He’s got 24 days to prove ypu right. Even so any new signings are unlikely to feature v Newcastle or Udinese, by which time we could be out of CL.

      • rvpking says:

yes thats true but the signing of one good centre back is not going to keep arsenal from losing to udinese . who ever it is . There is one unfortunate problem with arsenal and that is that as a whole team we just cant defend. If we swapped koscielny or djorou for vidic or terry utd and chelsea would still
do great with either of those two defenders .
But i thinkwe would still be exactly the same even with a great defender like vidic alongside vermaelen . Barcelona play our kind of football and although they have good centre backs , as a team i was amazed how well they defended and pressed . Ive never seen a team press like that . we didnt get a second to have the ball , it was nothing particularly to do with them having 4 great defenders . I think arsenal will always have to rely on scoring more than we let in , eg 4-2 or 4-3 , its a shame but true .
Either that or wenger needs to learn how to defend properley again as a team . So many fans are never happy unless we are signing players , its just not about that though .

  • grimmswengertales says:

very good comment from colesy and a few that followed echoing his sentiments. The state of our club is mainly in turmoil and pessimism….the cesc saga really focuses all that is wrong…he is now so desperate to leave he will stump up the difference to get him away from this crap. Im pleased as its a real statement of intent from cesc…..how bad is the thought of playing with losers torturing cesc’s mind?…it also supports the anti-management brigade’s continued argument that they havent got a clue and are unambitious, only concerned with profit-making. Its not self sufficiency, its profiteering….we make a profit every season since adebayor left…(that season we made 20+million).
It stinks and fans know it………even many loyal AKBs are getting the message loud and clear. My hope is that we capitulate this season….a bit like a cancer that has to be removed….do it now, have the pain, and lets get better…roll on 2012 august!

    • Fab says:

      What are AKB’S?

  • Lenzo says:

There comes a time when almost every manager just loses it. I think Wenger has lost his magic touch, if he had one at all.
Over the past 5-6 years, Wenger prioritized price over talent. Players he brought into the club may have been good, but not great.
Wenger’s reputation as a brilliant talent spotter doesn’t stand any more. Not only he refuses to sign players in needed positions, but whenever he signs somebody they turn out to be as useless as a fifth wheel, most of the time.
I don’t blame any player who wants to leave the club. Why waste valuable years in your career?
As harsh as it may seem but this is the reality now.

  • Bouba says:

I know experience is an important factor, but talent is the key for everything… Frimpong is just showing of how Song is average and may be how much we have missed him last year, despite his young age.

Personally I would prefer Frimpong as a CDM… Song is a catastrophe and I have never liked him anyway… He goes up too much as a CDM, and in counter attack we are always exposed… It is embarrassing and he is embarrassing …

Regarding Squillacci, he might be one of the worse defender in the league… Disgrace does not even qualify is standard… I don’t even know if we could sell him as he is so “shyt”…!!!

I don’t know which signing Wenger is talking about ( for next week ), I just hope it is not Chamberlain…!!!

This squad is not up for anything this year, looks like we have gone backward again… Unless we keep Fabregas and Nasri ( ?? ) and we get an great defender, I don’t even see us in the top 5 the season coming.

Is Pat Rice still Wenger number 2 ??? That’s just wrong… We are being insulted every time those guys step on the pitch…!!! Ridiculous, Wenger is a ridiculous individual and I don’t think he is a good coach anymore… He has shown is limits.

  • grimmswengertales says:

wenger will go down in the history books as the man that ruined arsenal unnecessarily……cesc will tell the story and so will nasri…..there is a lot of stuff to come out about the strategy of the club…it will be told in years to come that he failed to stop the slide when he had the resources(money) to do it. He chose to make money rather than invest in the team. Dont believe the shit about self sufficiency…..man utd are in 700m debt…chelsea are a credit crazy club, man city spend like theres no tomorrow……liverpool spending amd in debt….so why are they all spending????

    • tonygunner says:

To grimmwengertales: The reason why all our rivals are spending is because they have management and boards that care what happens on the pitch and want to win trophies.

  • frog says:

when we win the league this year, alot of you are going to be eating a lot of poo poo. we need a centre back, a cesc “replacement” and a striker. arsene will buy a cb buy next week and mata will come in when cesc leaves. if he doesnt offload chamak i get the feeling theo will be our number 2 striker and that may just work out. I hope we also bring in Barton on a free and keep bendtner. then we would at least have some “balls”. im calling it now. we win at least one major trophy this year.

    • tonygunner says:

I hope your right. Agree except for Barton/Bendtner. Don’t need ‘em.

      • frog says:

the reason i feel we need barton and bendtner is steel. its no secret that most of our opponents consider us “soft”. Nick is already on our payroll and nobody else seems to want him and Barton is available on a free. i dont think anyone could consider a mid field of Song, Barton and Wilshere as soft. plus Barton can deliver a nice free kick from a set piece or corner and we all know that RVP and anyone else we have sucks at that. Then as far as Nicky B goes, I know he isnt ideal, but he sure is 1 million percent a better option than Chamakh so why not keep him on board.

  • callum hill says:

I AM FURIOUS WITH ALL YOU MY FELLOW GOONERS WHO HAVE NOTHING BUT LACK OF FAITH AT THE END OF THE DAY DOES A PRE SEASON MATCH COUNT FOR A LOT NO IT DOESNT SO WHY DONT YOU ALL SIT UP DO ME A FAVOUR AND LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE BENFICA IS A TOUGH PLACE TO GO AND ITS ONLY ONE LOSS IN A PRE SEASON MATCH AND ALL MY FELLOW GOONERS WHO HAVE A LACK OF FAITH YOU DIGSUTE ME

  • arsenalrclassy says:

All this bloody fearmongering and hate directed at the manager and team does nothing to help. People are actually suggesting that Arsenal will be relegated. We have fantastic players in nearly every position, and our starting central defenders (vermaelen and koscielny) are world class. Koscielny made few mistakes last season, and squillaci made him look worse than he is. We do need one more center backand a left back, ideally a striker too, but with arsenals finances as they are this is an acceptable squad, especially given that another center back will most likely be signed. Point is, there is no need to go mental.

  • gt says:

OMG, just watching the news regarding the riot in North London. I’ve never been to England before, but I hope all my fellow Gooners are safe, and the violence will stop quickly.

    • rvpking says:

haha , im pretty sure many of your fellow gooners were the rioters lol
