Arsene Wenger: van Persie as captain? I haven’t even thought about that

The Gunning Hawk - ForumArsene Wenger

With Cesc Fabregas edging closer to a move to Barcelona, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger confessed he is yet to think about who would take over as captain if the Catalan leaves.

Speaking in his pre-Newcastle press conference, the Frenchman revealed that the midfielder is not injured but will not feature against the Magpies as he’s not match fit adding the the Dutchman will captain the team at St. James Park but with no indication that he will continue in the role.

Asked how easy it is to replace “big players”, the Arsenal boss confessed that losing big players is never easy although it gives other players the opportunity to take responsibility and show new qualities.

On whether he would step down as Arsenal manager if he ends a seventh season without a trophy, Wenger concluded by saying that he’s not the one to decide on his position again insisting and promising that as Arsenal manager he will continue to give his best.

On Friday afternoon, Wenger said:

[Cesc Fabregas] is not injured, not match fit. [How is he mentally?] I don’t want to go into any deeper thinking about that. [On strike?] No, not at all. Tomorrow, van Persie will be captain. [van Persie captain in the future?] I haven’t even thought about that.

We are all replaceable. A big player attracts the game to him, sometimes other people stand up and take more responsibility and your game is a little bit different but not less efficient but you do not want to lose big players, when we have them we don’t want to lose them.

At the moment we have two big squads, too many players. There is a strange thing, I don’t believe that people who watch football are conscious of what is going on in the world, you have 350 players in England who have no job and we have a massive squad, we are not in a position where we are short of players.

[Consider my position if we don't win a trophy?] It’s not down to me, I’m here to give my best, as long as I can, I will do that, I promise you.

With Fabregas we did not win any trophies, so what is the hype around him?
    Step up, Jack, Aaron, etc.

      >THIS

    • JohnDale says:

Cos he was the only one playing right?

Put Viera in that same team with Almunia in goal, Squillly in defense, Denilson in midfield and see if he ever wins anything in 10 years.

  • Daniel Wong( Hong Kong) says:

This man is full of contradictions. Let’s hope he will go for the quality replacemnts and not some more wonder boys from Ethiopia. As for RVP if the gunners fail again to challenge ,don’t blame him for wanting to move to Chelsea or other tem capable of fighting for tropies.Wenger betterr note his policy aint working and it could be his last.

If you are not in charge of making sure we win trophies then let me speak to the person who is

  • Aussie Jack says:

“I haven`t even thought about that”. Either he`s lying or he`s stupid and he`s not stupid.

    • Hunter says:

After seeing Nasri wear the armband in preseason this is no surprise.

    • tonygunner says:

It was a thoughtless comment that shows he is still trying to play the charade that Cesc is not leaving. Why he has to play this stupid “official” line when the whole world knows the truth is beyond comprehension. Old habits die hard I guess. His credibility with the media and the general public is at an all time low.

  • Matt Jones says:

Personally I’m happy Fabregas has gone and we’ve made a decent profit. I would also like to see Nasri take a hike too ( if he’s not interested let him go ). I have the up most belief in Wilshere to become the teams next great player and am crossing my fingers that Wenger thinks the same. I actually don’t think we need to sign another attacking midfielder. What we’ve got is mustard as it is. I would like to see two more quality centre backs signed to rotate with Vermaelen, a goalie, a decent holding midfielder to rotate in the centre and if we get Joel Campbell there’s no need for another centre forward ( he looks the bomb ). We could probably achieve all this for about £60,000,000 which would be the money generated from the sales of Cesc and Nasri. I actually believe we’ll become a stronger team.

he only problem is van persie is injured alot lol

  • Jekyll says:

Wenger must be the most arrogant man of all time. He lectures, he doesn’t respond. He insults the intelligence of his audience, he thinks he is on a higher plane. Arsenal is his plaything, as far as he is concerned. He needs to go, and this season will force him out. Then AFC will rebuild again, just like we have throughout our history.

  • xx says:

WENGER SHOULD GO FOR A MENTAL CHECK. NOT ONLY IS HE INCOMPETENT,BUT HE IS NOW CRAZY. WHY HAS HE NOT SIGNED AT LEAST ONE CENTREBACK? CAN HIS WIFE PLEASE TELL THIS STUBBORN MAN TO GET A CENTRE HALF FOR THE FRUSTRATED MILLIONS OF ARSENAL SUPPORTERS. I SAY HIS WIFE BECAUSE THIS STUBBORN MAN DOES NOT SEEM TO RESPECT ANYBODY ELSE’S OPINION AND I DO NOT EXPECT SILENT KROENKE, THE INCOMPETENT BOARD OR HIS RIGHT HAND MAN RICE TO DO THE HONORABLE THING. SENIOR PLAYERS LIKE VAN PERSIE AND VERMALEUN SHOULD ALSO CONFRONT HIM OVER THIS ISSUE.

  • Aussie Jack says:

By the looks of the `comment ratings` if you`re not half way up Wengers bum you get a lot of `thumbs down`….that`s life.

  • Map says:

Shut up anti arsenals it is time to get behind our team come on UP THE ARSE

  • i’m sure he has thought about it, seemed to me he was on a wind up in press conference
