Arsene Wenger on Fabregas’ departure and using the money for new signings

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was full of praise for former captain Cesc Fabregas who left the Gunners to join Spanish giants Barcelona.
The Frenchman admitted that the Club lost a world class player and that it’s now important to show that even without the midfielder the Gunners are strong and united enough to reach their objectives. The Arsenal boss also admitted that the player desperately wanted to go back to his home city, reason why he was sold but not before fighting to keep him at the Club.
Asked if the money secured from the deal will be used to sign top players, the manager explained that his team will make sure to spend the money wisely as they have been doing in these last few seasons.
According to reports, the 24-year old midfielder signed a five-year contract with Barcelona in a deal worth a potential £35m to Arsenal with the player saying on his Twitter account that he will always be grateful to the Arsenal fans for showing “unconditional support”.
On Fabregas, Wenger said:
[Fabregas?] We lost a world class player, we are sad about it, we did fight to keep him but in the end we have as well to respect the desire of the player.
This Club is 125 years old this season, and many big players left the Club and the Club went on and that’s what we want to show, that we have the strengths and unity to fight as we ever did at this club.
[Why I let him go?] Cesc wanted to go back to his home city. If you understand one thing, it is Cesc did not go for financial reasons, or that he did not love this Club – Cesc went because he was desperate to play for his hometown where he has been educated and it’s very difficult to resist to that.
[Using the money generated from the Fabregas departure on new signings?] I have been in football for a long, long time and I don’t think just spending money is a target that is defendable. To spend the money on a top player is defendable. But just to spend the money is like you are worried.
Our fans can be proud of the way we run this club, of the quality of player we have and of the financial situation that is existing at the Club. Rather than convicting this club, they have more reason to be proud of the whole situation here.
We have built a team and a stadium in such a short space of time, and have a strong financial situation – and we always survived at the top level. There are more reasons to be positive than the negatives ones being sold by everybody.

Monster size defenders eh? I agree we could do with a few taller players but in case you don’t know, we need defenders who whilst they may be taller than what we got , are mobile, agile good on the ball and can play a high defensive line.
