Wenger: We’re a bit short, we could sign one or two players

Written by Jeffrey on August 16, 2011 – 4:45

The Gunning Hawk - ForumArsene Wenger

Gael Clichy, Cesc Fabregas, Nicklas Bendtner, Emmanuel Eboue and Samir Nasri, all players who left or all about to leave Arsenal during the summer transfer window.

Speaking about a turbulent summer, manager Arsene Wenger explained that what is important at this stage of the season is to be strong and united as a team as he added that he is very happy with the quality signings of Carl Jenkinson, Joel Campbell, Ryo Miyaichi, Gervinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Asked if new players will sign this week, the Arsenal boss confessed that the squad is currently short of players and that his team is working hard to add one or two names with the manager again insisting that the Club is not “frightened” to spend money.

Tonight, Arsenal will face Udinese of Italy in what could be easily be described as a must-win game as the Gunners desperately need to reach the group stage of the Champions League in order to look forward with optimism.

In Monday’s press conference, Wenger said:

What is more important is how strong we feel inside, as a team. We are determined, we have bought some very good players and overall the feeling inside the squad is very strong and the desire and belief is very strong.

Let’s not forget that we have brought players in. I have Carl Jenkinson, we have bought Gervinho in, we have bought Joel Campbell in, we have brought Ryo Miyaichi in. You do not know them very well yet but they are all quality players.

But of course [we] will be encouraged by the results in the very near future, and as well, certainly, by the fact we can still bring one or two players in because we are a bit short.

[Transfer news?] Not lately, because there’s ins and outs and I must say we were more busy, very busy with negotiating out because it’s as well difficult to perfectly link the two, in and out, it’s very much time consuming.

[But] we will try. We are not frightened to spend money but we have to be convinced the player is better than what we have. That is our main concern, to bring quality. We have quality, but want to add more quality.

I not have anything to say……Arsene

  • Mata's Father says:

Wenger sucks! U said u’re not freightende to spend money but only interested on quality players, then tell me what’s delaying Juan Mata’s signing? Not quality enough?

    • Hunter says:

I must say that not signing him was a really stupid move. He was only 17 million 2 weeks ago and we knew then that we would lose Cesc at a minimum and possibly Nasri as well. Instead we bought a 17 year old from the championship for 15 million. Are you kidding me?!

  • Mudashir hibrahim horlermelekan says:

Is better to buy more player

  • wubgooner says:

This man is sick. How many times is he gonna flip flop? He has zero, nada credibility on whatever he says. With in 24 hours of him saying “we have big squad,” he now says we are a bit short and we will buy one or two? Believe me, he is quite certain that he won’t buy. He is just trash. Why don’t somebody call him out for all his lies and ridiculous assertions. On the one hand, he says he has money as long as he can find quality. But, he got rejected by quality players for offering a pittance. Had he had the gut to slash out 17 milion, he would have got cahil, with a blink of an eye. Had he offered 20 million, he would have gotten mata with in few hours.WTF is he talking about having found it hard to add “super quality,” when he is missing out on qualities for few million dollars? Why is he lecturing people as to how 24 hours active he is looking for super super quality. What the hek is this man talking about? Why doesn’t he just shut his mouth up and tell us flat out that he is too scared to buy a world class player who has independent mind, whom he can’t look down as his own creation? Who is this man playing with? Why all this swindling? Is this the man who refused to pay 8 million for Kompany, and bought squlachi for 5 million talking about his search of a super super quality? I am really sick of this Arse, really. All his talk every transfer window has become too obvious. Just announce that you will buy players, close to the opening of transfer; just disappear during the peak of the transfer, and in the few weeks before the close of the transfer, complain about how it is difficult to find “quality” player, and give deaf ear to what everybody says; and right after the close of the window, declare you were this close to buy somebody, but couldn’t because of this and that. It has become too obvious, disgusting and shameful as an Arsenal fan

    • Tommy says:

Spot on!! I strongly agree that this man lost the plot and he is trying to cover up his usual obvious faults. What a hell is he talking about super quality players?? I can pick any center back from the premier league who is a mile mile better than our center backs. He bought kids for the future and he is already done. What about now? Arsene, you don’t have time. This is your last year in Arsenal color. You have to at least leave with grace. Good luck for gunners!!!

    • andrew says:

u r mr wubgooner, because also as arsenal fan, i develop presure for nothing. Now he bought kid who cant compete any where, we want to take trophies now, but brought kids who expect to win in the next 5 yrs n before that, he will sell them. wenger should just leave the club n go to utilise his degree in economics somewhere. we are tired of his politics every season.

    • Rock says:

@wubgooner you have a point there. I am sick and tire of him always saying we have the money to spend but will have to make sure the player is of good quality and is better than what we have. Are we fools? Is he trying to play on our intelligence? Is he say from our attack all the way down to the keepers there is no player out there that can play better than what we have in our team? For goodness sake he should wake up and see what others are seeing. we need one or two defenders. Apart from vem in our defense who is better than cahill nd samba. Is ramsy better than mata or hazard. Is bentner better than benzima, why can’t come out and tell us that he doesn’t want to spend money and that he has a share in arsenal that is why he doesn’t want to spend the money so as to protect his interest. To me our major problem is back up when the chips are down, when the likes of van persie, fab. Nasir, vam, all get injuried who will fill in d gap. Man U has a system of rotation this was exactly what made them champions, chelsea as well as Man city has learnt it and they are buying places to replace any 1st team player that is injuriied. We have quality players in our 1st team but we don’t have quality players as sub. Please wenger buy players plesse, we losts the league last year due to injuries and tiredness of some of our players. Please wenger give us something to smile about. And please try and keep nasir he is the so called quality you are looking for.

    • tonygunner says:

What he means is we have too many bench players in the squad and not enough quality starters. This has been the case all summer. I’m hoping the action will happen after we qualify for CL. Then top players will want to come to the club. If we fail then we’re f—–!
We’ll only get less than wc players.

  • johnson says:

so im guessing that means joel will play for us this season ?

  • MidnightMoor says:

“We have quality, but we want to add more quality”

    What happened to “SUPER quality”?

    1 x DC
    1 X MC
    1 x AM
    1 x ST

Otherwise this will be a really long old season

  • Charlie says:

Read between the lines “we’re a bit short” means Peter Crouch is on his way !! I hope not. I wouldn’t slag Wenger off after all he’s done for the club and i will challenge anyone who does but one thing is for certain. He and/or the board are deliberately holding on to money earnt from transfers and trying to find excuses. How many of you know that following the transfer of Fabregas Arsenal became the club to have the lowest net transfer spend in the entire Premier League of the last 5 dismal years. That net “spend” is approximately 50m quid of profit. I also do not buy this excuse of “we must buy players better than what we have” and “it’s not necessarily the expensive players that are the best”. Other comments have covered why, specific examples include Cristiano Ronaldo as a teenager, Gary Cahill and Juan Mata this year. Whether the press reports are true or not it is clear that the only thing stopping Arsene from buying a decent defender is the price, not whether they’re good enough. Highest ticket prices in the country and yet the board profit in the transfer market, no wonder the fans get fed up when facing such daylight robbery.

  • Rocky Jay says:

better quality than what you have at the club Wenger?
Sign me up,,,i can say for sure i am better than Squid!!

    • Hunter says:

Judging on last weekends match and our dreadful midfield creativity there shouldn’t really be a question that there are tons of people around better than what we already have.

  • gt says:

Quite frankly, our players’ friendly attitude towards that sub-human aka Joey Barton after the game is more worrying than the lack of signing.

    • Gunzblazin says:

they shud hav smashed his face in but our players were holding his hands and hugging him, barton must be their girlfriend lol, if it was vieira or adams they would have knocked him out, its really sad, because of barton, gervinho and song are banned for 3 games, i guess our seasons allready over before its even started.

      • steve says:

Im sick of this blaming everyone else……..its because of Gervinho and Song we have lost them for 3 matches and lost the chance of a win not Joey Barton. Everyone knows what an idiot Barton is he wound us up last season we got a player sent off and ended 4-4. They just don’t learn there lessons and history is repeated. Wenger should slap a wage fine on them both as well or just give up maanaging, if he didnt say before the match “you all know what Joey is like, ignore him let himself get wound up don’t react just laugh at him and he will be the one off the pitch”

Everyone knows, you stamp you raise your hands your off, absolute disgrace this keeps happening and the buck stops at the manager

    • woodyd says:

Shameless, really. Barton doesn’t deserve handshakes and backslapping. I truly feel he ruined any chance of transferring to a bigger club with that display.

  • cin says:

Please wenger, Do one thing at least……..

    DON’T CHEAT US AGAIN……………………………

We don’t want any more players, no problem, But pls don’t cheat us by saying ur team is having quality and you can’t find quality outside…………

U just want to make profit every year from Transfer. That’s only one target now.

    U suck…..

  • Jan von Tran says:

Winds your necks in. Wenger has been consistent all summer. We had a ‘big squad’ when Cesc was still here and now we’re ‘a bit short’ because he’s gone. And its ridiculous to compare the quality of our FOURTH choice defender to starters at other clubs. Name one club with more than 3 CB’s who would start for us? TV and Kos are mint! Also please stop fantasizing about Mata. He’s a frail little midget that we’ve never even bid for and most of you have never seen play. Cesc’s replacement will be made of sterner stuff. A playmaker from a Russian league makes far more sense.

    • sam says:

wilshere can take over cesc role with ramsey as his backup, all we need is a powerful ball winner in the midfield. mahamadou diarra is a free agent, i am not sure about felipe melo. just a bulldog to protect us from being bullied.
then strenghten the defence and one big striker coz we bought so many kids up front. i dont think they will all shine this season, just to make sure.
thats my wish anyway, i dont think wenger will buy 3 players before the window closes.
even leroy fer will add some steel in the midfield

    • bal says:

      are you serious?…
mata is a frail little midget that cant replace fab???…we need a russian playmaker??…
cmon , We have seen mata and he is quality…on the david silva level….
mata will put far more bite in our attack than ramsey or rosicky ever will…not to mention miyachi or campbell taking the premiership by storm…which will never happrn
wenger does not need to tell us what the world klnows…”the squad is short of number”? ….we all know who is in the squad list…what wenger is doing is saving money for the club while still qualifying for CL footbal, which pays more than winning any title…

  • Jan von Tran says:

Up front it was Gervinho’s first competitive game and RVP wasn’t on form for once. In the middle we had no playmaker because Jack is injured and Cesc hadn’t been sold and replaced yet. Other than that we played great at Newcastle. Our defense looked shit hot against set pieces for once.

  • Rendie says:

Wenger should just shut up! Does he think that because we are fans it means being stupid also. Some of us are more smatter than he will ever be. The only thing that is hurting is his quality, we are not afraid to spend money thing. So far tha players he bought are inexperienced, and as for tonight, who is going to be our main striker? Chamach? Then I think its bye-bye to ECL.

    • Kevin says:

Some of us are more smatter than he will ever be, huh? Listen to yourself man.

  • Ryo says:

Arsenal supporters should just wish that Arsenal lose to Udinese and not qualify for the champions league for the first time in the last 14 years which Wenger is so proud of, as it is the biggest achievement that a manger can aspire to accomplish, maybe then he will be embarrassed and say sorry to the fans, I’ve just robbed you from winning trophies so i can save the club a few millions so they keep loving me.

Although I would be very sad if Arsenal fail to qualify, but its something that needs to happen so the rotten inside the clubs stops, and the club brings a manager that actually doesn’t care about anything other than winning matches, buying the right players and getting rid of the dead wood.

The Fans should act now before the transfer window is closed, all of us should stop going to the stadium if the club don’t buy big players that actually makes a difference to make a sign of intent, just like the Aguero signing increased the hopes that city can win the title.

We don’t need players like Jadson and the ones that Wenger bought isn’t even near what the fans hoped, and surely they aren’t better than the ones that we already have.

What is strange is that we lost so many players in a laughable way like loosing:
    1) jose enrque to liverpool for 6m, and we needed him to clichy.
    2) zapata to vilareal.
    3) Arda Toran to atlitco madrid for 12 euro, he could’ve replaced Nasri with ease and even be better than him.
And a lot more depressing opportunities which could have improved the team.
maybe we will hear tomorrow that Mertesacker was sold to tottenham for 6m.

Show us the money, the experienced star players, enough babies for a change.

    • A.M says:

And to think I was berated by some numbskull for actually wishing we lost the Newcastle game as well when all I wanted was it to force Arsene’s hand. Now im REALLY hoping we fall out of the CL as well and that would be a straight smack in his face. Totally agree, his old Frenchie has taken us as far as he can, and has been losing it along the way as well.

    • Berk Face says:

Going out the CL is the only way we’ll qualify for it next year

  • Pissofffan says:

    Its so obvious Arsene always
Buy for the future and when the future comes the world class players will leave coz no trophies n sell for a good amount of money. Thats how it is done. Unless
Manager or the board of directors leave. Arsenal will never win anything.

  • Ryo says:

I forgot to add Matta, Alvarez, Mesut Ozil, Nuri Sahin, and Angel De Maria before them, how much the latter three cost real madrid? its really funny to be a manger and miss these players and then be convinced that we have the best scout network all over the world, and we are working 24 hours a day to bring super quality or just quality players and just couldn’t find them.

    • Patrick O'Neill says:

It’s obvious our scout network is crap, our coaching staff haven’t a clue and our manager hasn’t a clue – a lot of cluelessness there – and oh I nearly forgot about the board – they know what they’re doing – they’re making money every day.

  • Woshy says:

How many of u av seen ths Mata play?he is not even better than Rosicky!then look at OC,despite his young age,the boy has quality from his pace and skills judging 4rm the few games he’s played for southampton and thats y wenger was not afraid to spend upto £15m jst to get him.looking at Gervinho there is no doubt that is so talented and very sharp and really distract opponent defenders.talk of Joel, for those who av been closely following under 20 world cup,u can tell what quality Joel is(strength, dribbling and pace).lastly Carl showed everyone at pre-season how good he is en i can bet dat he has better crosses than Sagna.so,when wenger says he wil bring Quality,he really meant it!

    • Gunzblazin says:

ive seen mata play, hes a class player, his passing is as good as fabregas and his dribbling is as good as nasri, hes a very talented player, very skillfull and very quick, his abillities allow him to be very versitile aswell, left wing is his prefered position but he can play as a CF or as a CAM, he can be used in the middle aswell because he has great passing, hes a very special player, he would make a big difference if he came to arsenal, he is an impact player, a player for the big accasion, hope that enlightens you.

    • Berk Face says:

Mata not better than Rosicky? And a load of boners have rated your post. Insane.

  • The BearMan says:

It is not until Wenger’s Arsenal is struggling to survive in the Premiership (Fighting Relegation) I fear would Wenger suddenly wake up! But by then he would be gone. However, I would wait till the transfer window is closed before I attempt to make predictions.

  • Charlie says:

Saying “we must buy better than we already have” is a throw-away comment. It’s so obvious that it doesn’t need to be said. The point is that we all know how many players that qualify have been rejected based on price. If anything Arsenes’ statement just makes it more obvious that we need to spend money because you would think that quality was linked to price. The problem for Arsene is that everyone can see through these statements and knows that what he’s really saying is “if i don’t find that a player is undervalued by his club i won’t buy him”. Similarly saying “we didn’t find any players of sufficient quality that would add quality to the squad” is clearly false because if that was true the club would be significantly more successful than it is.

  • Mukaya says:

its frustrating when u love Arsenal. i would have protested already if i was in england. probably camping in front of wenger;s house until everyone joined me to scream some sense in wenger…

i cant watch the team play with any assurance that we will come thorough anymore.

WE NEED CHANGE NOT LATER BUT NOW NOW

  • Ray says:

One or two more signing? Come on, we just lost Fabregas, going to lose Eboue, Nasri and Bendtner. Some said we are selling Almunia also. Besides that we already lost Clichy. We know that we need a good striker, a ACM, a left winger and at least 1 CB. So if it is 1-2 signing, then which one of the above we will cover? Please don’t tell me it is a striker only.

Koscielny and Vermaleen’s performance last Sat? Should that be something to be proud about even when Wenger himself said that Newcastle was playing with a defensive approach? If we managed to keep clean sheet in Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge, then yes, we have good enough CB. But again, please look at our deph, NO, we are not there yet.

A squad cannot rely on 11 main players only.

Lastly, please get rid of Squilacci, Rosicky, Almunia, Diably so that the squad can “look smaller” in order to sign better players.

    • Kevin says:

Short memory. We gave up one goal, total, to Man U in EPL play last year. And nobody, absolutely nobody, keeps clean sheets at Trafford and Stamford Bridge, nor is that a standard required to win the league. Just more proof that blathering fan boys shouldn’t pretend to know more than professionals like AW.

  • Hunter says:

After watching the highlights from all the games this weekend I noticed a player not getting any time I would love to have. Raul Mireles seems to not be a favorite of Daglish at Liverpool and I would welcome him in our midfield. He is full of running, chips in with goals and can play all across the midfield. I bet we could get him on the cheap since Daglish has decided that crap players like Jordan Henderson are a better option.

    • Hunter says:

Speaking of Liverpool, I sincerely hope that the rumors linking us with Joe Cole are not true. He is an absolute rubbish player who dribbles too much and really doesn’t bring much with him other than a bad attitude and a weak skill set.

    • Dhaval says:

For once I agree with you.

  • Joe says:

Wenger has lost the plot! While new clubs have reached the upper echelon of English football. Arsenal are on a free fall to the Europa League. I will stand by because I love the club but Arsene is speaking to fans as if we are children!

  • gt says:

Great, now we lost both Gibbs AND Djourou. If that isn’t compelling for AW to strengthen our defense, I don’t know what will ever be.

  • Esteban says:

It`s weird that he doesn`t look at the best young player of copa america Sebastian Coates he may buy it at 10 million euros i don`t understund why he does not make an offer
