Ignasi Miquel ready for more – Lukasz Fabianski to fight for #1 spot

Written by Jeff Patterson on August 23, 2011 – 8:00

The Gunning Hawk - ForumIgnasi Miquel

It’s a massive week for Arsenal, with the transfer window in it’s dying moments, and Gooners everywhere hoping that time hasn’t run out on Arsenal’s season even before it has really begun. The shocking reality is that, by this time next week, Arsenal can be out of one competition, with there hopes severely damaged in another competition.

Long though the Premier League season may be, taking one point out of a possible nine would make for quite a steep hill to climb. This young squad has much to look forward to, but unfortunately they are being asked to step up to the challenge now. It’s rather upsetting that this Arsenal squad is forced to rely so heavily on teenagers, even though they have such tremendous potential.

One of these young players is defender Ignasi Miguel, who made his debut this Saturday against Liverpool. Miguel was not a planned substitution, but injury to Laurent Koscielny early in the match saw the young Spaniard make his first Premier League appearance.

“I am happy to have made my debut but obviously we wanted to win,” said Miguel.

“When I saw [Laurent] Koscielny going down I thought that it was going to be nothing special, they just told me to warm up quickly and then I saw he was coming off. I’ve never expected it, I didn’t realise until I was on the pitch playing.”

I felt Miguel did a great job filling in, as far as debut’s go, it doesn’t get much bigger than at home against Liverpool. Miguel showed great understanding of the game and formed an instant partnership with Vermaelen, and together they effectively shut down the threat of Andy Carroll.

Ignasi Miguel is definitely one that can benefit Arsenal this season, and after a great showing for Spain in the U19 EURO, he has continued to demonstrate why he is one of the hottest defensive prospects in Europe.

Another Arsenal prospect who has continued to impress is Polish keeper Wojciech Szczesny. At 21 years of age, Szczesny has staked his claim to being first choice for Arsene Wenger in the goalkeeping department. While most of us are very happy to see Arsenal find a ‘permanent’ solution to it’s goalkeeping issues, one person who hopes it isn’t permanent is backup keeper Lukasz Fabianski.

“I am fighting hard, really hard,” he told Arsenal Player. “Since we came back from Germany I can say I have been fully fit. Now I am ready to play.

“It has been a difficult time for me because I was No 1 last year and I lost it due to my injury. Now I am fit again but Wojciech is doing well. Of course I am not happy with my position because I want to be No 1 but I have to accept it and fight for it. I am fighting really hard to get where I was before.”

It’s great to hear that Fabianski is determined to fight for his place in the squad, and I’ve always felt a bit sorry for Lukasz. He did well with his chance last season, and it was unfortunate for him that he suffered that long lay-off. Unfortunately for him, Szczesny has seized upon his opportunity with both hands, and I think it will be an uphill battle for Fabianski to find his way back to first choice.

I love to hear his determination, and it strikes me as an attitude that more Arsenal players need to adopt. Denilson and Bendtner especially stick out in the mind as players who struggled to find places in the squad, but who have not shown the determination to fight for a spot. This young squad has tons of talent for the future, but they must EARN their way into the team, not be handed starting positions on a platter. That’s the way to build a winning squad, something Arsenal must do quickly, and on the fly this season.

I wish your comments were available on every other website including BBC and Sky as you are making more sense than all the other journalists combined.

The real signing that Arsenal really needs is the board before even we go to the players as they have completely handicapped Wenger refusing to pay for his targets and putting absurd wage limits for a club of Arsenal’s calibre, then, they throw Wenger out to take all the blame. He is doing a real good job and they are doing nothing at all except banking the money from the sales of the likes of Fabregas in their personal accounts, and Wenger has to carry all that blame himself.

Also, we need high value release clauses on Wilshere, Miquel, Szczesny, Miyaichi, Afobe and Frimpong as they certainly are the next biggest things in English Football and like usual, the hawks will be lurking.

Also, this board has to remove the wage limits and let our players wages go with the powers of demand and supply, I am not saying they be paid exorbitant wages (it already is exorbitant any way), but we should be loosing players because of it.

    • Mike says:

ive just done the calculation for Nasri; if Arseanal gave him a 3 years contract for £160K it works out to £25.9mill… for 5 years (£43 mill)… so wouldnt not be a good business to give him 5 years and a buy-out clause of £60mill plus on his contract… let the team make progress and then sell him after next world cup when his valuation hopefully rocketted…

to me we just need a new chairman with a brain….

      • Gunnerrob says:

I can’t deny it makes sense in principle, the problem with paying Nasri £160,000/week approx £8 million/year is that the rest of the team will look on with envious eyes. RVP, Vermaelen, Szecszny, Song, Wilshire, Sagna, Kosielny and any other experienced player we decide to sign this season or next , and the youger players as they gain experience will want parity at least. If we cave in to 1 player then we open the flood gates to all demands. We already have an incredible £110 million/year wage bill, that’s 60% of turnover. This doesnt even take into account transfer fees. We’re already living close to the edge of our financial limits. I know it’s boring living within our means especially when we have to look enviously at City and Cheksea and the apparent unlimited money being thrown at players. But it is a reality of supporting a proper club like Arsenal. of course I’m not saying I wouldn’t have loved Nasri to have stayed, of course I wound he is a really good player, but £160,000 is just too much to pay if you’re not an oil baron, in my humble opinion.

  • Illybongani says:

I think Miquel’s promising performance put an end to any hope of us signing a new Centre Back…but the flip side of that is it may have ended the Arsenal career of Squillaci. Every cloud has a silver lining…it’s just that I think we’re about to get soaked to the skin.

    • Jacqueline Mugure says:

Nice view about Squillaci, It is a shame as he is clearly talented and not too old to play, where does form go sometimes?, Him, Rosicky, Arshavin Gosh, they should be the best players we have right now considering what they are capable of, what happened.

  • ed says:

i really liked his performance, however i would still like to see arsene bring in an experienced centre back not only for depth but to add guidance for young guys like this

    go the gunners

  • stephen says:

THE SUN AND SKY AND THE MIRROR ARE NOT SUPPORTING ARSENAL THEY ARE SUPPORTING THERE OWN A GENDER AGAINST WENGER. ARSENAL ARE BRITISH. NOT FRENCH NOT SPANISH BUT BRITISH . DO THEY NOT REALISE THAT THERE ARE OVER 300000 ARSENAL FANS IN THE UK HO PAY FOR THERE PAPERS.TAKE A LOOK AT SKY . HOW DID NOT HID THERE JOY IN TELLING THE WORLD THAT WENGER WAS ON THE PHONE AT HALF TIME IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE. I FOR ONE ARE GOING TO STOP PAYING FOR THERE RUBBISH.

    • Jack Mugure says:

I agree there seems to be a war against Arsene Wenger when it should be clear that he did his part and it is the board who are letting him down.

He had already pointed to Gary Cahill, Karim Benzema, Yann M’vila, Phil Jones and Juan Mata by the 30th June, but his job is to point, it is Ivan Gazidis job to go out, negotiate contracts and buy the players. Wenger did his part and he is still doing it with his fingers pointing at still Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and M’vila but Gazidis is not looking, He was sent to Kroenke’s personal bank to bank the proceeds of Cesc Fabregas sale, and then, when they have stashed than money away, they will come back and claim Hazard is too expensive.

How come they want 25 million for Nasri who has only 1 Year of contract and they wanted 45 million from Barcelona for Cesc Fabregas despite the fact that they were only returning what they stole but to pay 18 million for a superb player like Juan Mata they considered too much, Gosh.

      • prabhu says:

        Mata rejected arsenal offer …

  • Jack Mugure says:

It is a game that we will need defensive awareness more than ever before, so I hope we see defensive minded players in it.

I’d love to see how this can work. 4-2-3-1

    “““““““““““Szczesny
    Sagna“““Djourou“““`Miquel““Vermaelen
    “““““““Song““““““Frimpong
    Gervinho““““Wilshere“““““Rosicky/Arshavin/Miyaichi (whoever)
    “““““““““`Van Persie

I omitted Walcott despite him scoring in the other game as he seems to be getting worse instead of better.

For once i’d like Wenger to risk on a recuperating player (Wilshere) as it is a crucial game that we can’t afford to loose, if it backfires and he is not available for Manchester United game, then let be it as we can afford to loose the Man U game as they will be plenty of time to catch up.

    • Theohari says:

      What about Ramsey ?

      • Haris says:

what about Ransey, he is in a very bad form.

  • Fabianski has absolutely no chance of being No. 1. Everything is against him. He has no height, no confidence, and no command at all! Yes, he can make some good saves, but he concedes too many as well. And most unfortunately for him, there is Szczesny-The giant Pole!!! Extremely confident, very agile, very commanding, big shoulders, and a real presence in his area. I’m sure Fergie should be regretting why he didn’t throw in a bid-jokes, as he would have no chance! Who needs the Stekelenburgs of this world when we have our very own? Sorry Mr Fabianski, all that is left for you is sitting on the bench!

    • Chris Chapman says:

Yes, that about sums it up. Wojciech has been fantastic so far. At least during a turbulant time we have started the season without a goalkeeping problem. (For a change!!)
Yes, the point about Sir Alex is a good one. De Gea was again decidely shakey a couple of times of yesterday. Cant wait to see them match up on Saturday.

  • goonerdan says:

I told you Miguel would be playing soon;)
It’s good to see this in our team, we’ve got bags of potential, the only thing is, we need a few more experienced level headed players, like Van and Thomas. You see the progress United are making, its pretty much similar to ours. This negative attitude has got to stop, and I know we’ll be back to our old selfs soon enough.

  • shagx says:

I really think there are more positive than negative from the Liverpool game. Yes we lost the game which was really disappointing but we also saw a few young lads playing their hearts out. I think they are what we need. They have talent and they have heart. Yes they are a bit rough around the edges but they’re going to contribute to our season. Fimpong was amazing even though he was sent off. Miquel looks like a class act. Jenkinson played his heart out. Althought Ramsey needs to get back in form. Theo…….my god, what can I say? Did he asked to play in the middle? Was he even on the field? Ashavin tried hard but he needs to find his form also. Terrible passing. Szzy looked great. Vermaelen was a monster. Too bad we have too many defensive player injuried or out, and then the red card. We weren’t able to change the game.

  • cheslin says:

I think Miguel is a perfect back up for koncielny, now we just need to find someone who can back vermaelen up, cant depend on djouro to injury prone, would love to see him instead of djouro in arsenal first team, and sagna needs to play on the right wednesday, where is campbell? is he going to be slotted into the first team to? miyachi to start before walcott

  • Dan AKA The Truth says:

Don’t feel sorry for Flappyhandski, Jeff. The player is the worst ‘keeper I have seen at Arsenal and has already been given too many chances… of course, this is Arsenal – the club where mediocre players are awarded large contracts and too much time at the club.

I would even be annoyed if Flappy were No. 1 for the Reserves!

    • gooner11 says:

u might be wrong here brother..

fabianski was handed the chance due to terrible form of almunia,. even though fabianski himself started really bad with too much of costly mistakes, he eventually proved himself to be a reliable keeper with some presence in the box.. as stated in the article, he was just unlucky that he suffered long term injury.. to cut it short, Fabianski is good, its just Sczesny proved to improve to become a better presence..

    • Scott (USA) says:

Me too. Not a fan of Shaggy (Fabianski)

  • Henry says:

Good young players wt overburdened responsibilities pls arsenal board tell us ur goal dis season and pls don’t tell lies so we can make up our mind 4 d best or d worst

  • Scott (USA) says:

I like Ignasi Miquel. I believe he one day will be a solid defender. I don’t believe that is now but you never know how fast a player will develop. With Wenger / The Boards transfer policy I hope it’s quick. He looks to have quality. Not sure if he is right for the English game but he is great on the ball as most spanish players are. If he can beef up a little and get some bite he could be a good one.

  • faizan says:

oooooo my god ……now we have finally sold nasri ….i am happy tht there will be no more lack of commitment but we hav sold EBOUE ,CLICHY, NASRI, FABREGAS, JET,and even BENDTNER is n his way even ALMUNIA will be going if his fee is agreed between two clubs ….we have lost 7 players and bought in 4 young lads ….JENKINSON,CAMPBELL,RYO,and OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN ……… and only one experienced player ‘GERVINHO’ whome i dont seem is a very big signing …and i dont think he will be a hit at arsenal ….
wat is wrong wid wenger …..why dosent the board sack him…. this is getting worse day by day …. we need at least 2 midfielders … one left back and a good striker …. not one like chamak or gervinho …. need a striker who can be with van persie and score goals …. 20 a season or at least 17 a season …..
if i was the manager i would hav bought at least henry ….at least he is experienced and will bring a great atmosphere in the dressing room …. and he still got his feet and his headers are very good …….. we need also to get rid of dead “meat” …like CHAMACK, DENILSON and now its hard to say but also ARSHAVIN ….he is either getting old or is a 50 mins player …. we dont need these sort of players ….
Many people think diaby is a bad player ….but i think once he is fully fit he can be at least equal to rosicky….
