Arsene Wenger happy to ease pressure, reveals that “there may be signings”

Written by Jeffrey on August 25, 2011 – 4:45

The Gunning Hawk - ForumArsene Wenger

Manager Arsene Wenger was delighted to see the Gunners qualify for the group stage of the Champions League as the win over Udinese eases the pressure on his young Arsenal squad.

Speaking in his post-match press conference and to ITV1 after the game, the Arsenal boss admitted that there would have been even more pressure on his players had they failed to qualify for Europe’s most prestigious competition adding that the Gunners wouldn’t have lost against Liverpool had they finished the game with eleven men.

Asked about the financial importance of the win, the manager declared that the main objective on Wednesday was not to win for the money but to win so as to enjoy top level football against the best teams in Europe.

And on any potential new signings, Wenger concluded by saying that his team is indeed working very hard adding that there may be signings in these last few days of the transfer window with the manager, and rightly so, opting not to give out any names.

On Wednesday night, the manager said:

[The win eases the pressure?] I feel, of course, it will because we have been a little bit under pressure. For us not to play in the Champions League and with the players who have left, that pressure would have increased, understandably. Since the beginning of the season I feel a very strong, determined attitude within the team.

We did not win at Newcastle but we played with 10 men. We did lose at Liverpool with 10 men but I am convinced that we would not have lost against Liverpool with 11. Overall, there is a strong attitude and spirit inside the team.

There are many questions around our club, if we had gone out tonight it would have been much worse. It was important not financially, like many people have said, but more for the fact we want to play at the top level.

We work very hard, I have said that many times, but we have many players out as well so I think we can be very positive as well. There may be signings but I cannot give you any names tonight. I cannot lie and say we sign somebody tomorrow.

Gervhnio!! WHat a player; absolutely sublime; i dont think we will miss Nasri or Cesc if we get someone like Gervhinio someone in the middle of the park and just of RVP; may be Hazard?

Our football seem a lot more direct and purposeful unlike all that dithering side-side passes… like the old days of the inviscibles!

future looks bright; we just need to get Samba as well just for the stokes games!!

    Come on gunners!

  • Pat Rice says:

Players we should or can get

    Vertoghen(cb plus dm)
    *M’vila(a bounus dm)
    Cissokho(lb)
    *Cahill(cb)
    *Hazard(am, sm)
    Martin(am)
*Zarate(ss,cf, but looks like he’s going to Inter)
    P.Cisse(cf,ss)
****Schweinstiger(cm,am,dm, would be my biggest signing, the dude works hard man)

*marks players that are unlikely needed or unlikely coming

  • gt says:

“There may be signings” ???? For heaven’s sake, please listen to van Persie, the captain of your team, who went on national TV to ask for signings. Great win tonight, but that didn’t hide the fact that the squad is threadbare, and we need a bigger squad of QUALITY PLAYERS to have a chance in any competitions.

Which btw, are Almunia and Bendtner still in the team? Eboue could find a new team but not those two chaps huh?

    • Spectrum says:

From Wenger’s most recent comments about “promoting from within” e.t.c. we can expect that he’ll continue on with his obsession with youth. It’s always the future he talks about. When will he be satisfied that the future is taken care of, and that he should be focussing on the PRESENT, and the weaknesses that he continues to neglect ?
So expect maybe one big signing ( just to keep the natives from rebelling ), and the the remaining holes to be filled with kids. After all, we’re a feeder club, so we have to groom the youth players so we can make a big profit from them later on. We’re a business you see, football is a secondary consideration.
One big name signing for say, 30 mill , leaves the board with a juicy 70 mill left over. Nice day’s work.

      • Sean says:

you’re right. because wenger couldnt be masking his intent in the transfer market to avoid being bent over by other clubs for new players.

we could always just bring in redknapp

  • johnson says:

“might be” in wenger terms means definetly not

    • goonerdan says:

“might be” is Wenger playing it down so no other clubs come in and bombard the transfer, he’s been doing it for years..

An example is Mata with Chelski , abit of Sanchez with the classless Barca

  • Anthony says:

Yeah!he is running mouth now let him not forget that we have great task ahead.

  • Wolgang says:

Yeah ,please don’t go and get wc wonder kids . We have had enough of them. Go for top
quality players who can help the gunners go to the next level.
If not,you words will ring hollow.

  • Emeka says:

Arsene, it’s time u give a little back to d fans.
IMHO, not even SAF has enjoyed d sort of unalloyed support n loyalty u ve gotten from d fans, season-in, season out, one trophiless season after the other. D ever loyal fans keep bringing their “IN ARSSENE WE TRUST” banners to d stadium, dats blind faith which I think u ve rightly earned, but right now, u r treading the thin line.
If d squads paraded in d last 6 campaigns kept imploding, them it will take more than a “strong determined attitude”, more than a miracle for this present (depleted, injury ravaged, younger, less experienced, wit so many underperfomers) squad to compete on all four front n deliver a(any) trophy.
The handwriting has been on the wall long enough for everyone to see, we need a few “super quality” in d squad, n please they abound everywhere, the “if we find” line is wearing tin, now soundsore like ” if it comes cheap”.
In Arsene, we’ve always trusted, d youth project we’ve always been proud of, the young squad, we believe in, wit trophy(ies) can we be repaid( d good football is only a bonus).
    Arsenal now n always!

  • 3 player to arsenal

    DC———-Dann (good takling,marking and cheap)
    DM———M’vila (good holding midfield)
    AM———Hazard (the next cr-7)

    Szchesny

    Gibbs / Vermaelen / Dann / Sagna

    Y.M’Vila / Wilkshire

    Hazard / R.V.P / Walcott

    Gervinho

    • Mike says:

But we have two good holding midfiekders in Frimpong and Song…?!!
i dont think we need anymore…. but I agree we need another dribbler with speed to take on players, Hazard would do nicely… lets roll back the years to the invisibles days!!

  • Afcfan says:

I honestly dislike our board… They are useless… The only reason they are not found out is because we have a genius of a manager! I can not imagine for the life of me Dein would have let Mata go to chelsea… unfortunately till Dein is back or the Russian takes over I believe it will extremely hard for us to win the big cups! Well done Arsene, top man, top manager we are lucky to have you….

  • Am sure as always said before this campaign that AW will definately buy only that he had to wait until the so called money clubs have got all they need. AW will never fail to sport a good player so instead of competing for the same player with Moan utd, Chelski and Moneycity he would rather wait and gets quality after they have taken what doesnt deserve the money then our main man will come in. I still trust him and i will write back when three good players come in; I will not mention names as taught by AW. Just remain faithful Gunners. Arsenal FOREVER.

  • Feeno says:

do you really think with the emergence of Frimpong allied with the allready excellent Alex Song that we should be wasting money on a defensive midfield, when there’s even more pressing positions to cover like left back and creative midfielder.

we need a quality left back and a quality creative midfielder and if we can get it a pacey striker, who knows where the net is (not sure if thats theo yet)

we have 3 top drawer centre back and Miquel is decent back up in place of the welt that is Squiallaci

  • preeyex says:

    jst bring players,,afc new some……

  • serge says:

was this interview copy and pasted from another conference because he is saying the same things:

    - we lost because of the red card, Liverpool looked the most likely to score anyways so FALSE
    - we are working very hard to find another player FALSE
    - strong attitude FALSE, fortunate in some ways that udinese did not score an away goal

im not anti-wenger im just anti-lier

    • Mills says:

-There were two offsides, marginal, but still, also if we had 11 men how do you know where it would have finished
-Because you know everything about the transfer market do you
-You mean the two goals we got after WS had a great save and the way we bossed them after that

      Not anit-wenger, just clueless!!!

      • serge says:

        - the SECOND goal was NOT OFFSIDE, with Suarez coming on and the fact that we had one shot in our box (when arshavin bulldozed the defender) it was just heroic defending that stopped the goals flowing – we were always going to lose that game

        - Wenger rarely buys when he says “there WILL be signings” let alone “there MAY be signings”

        - The only reason we survived was because we did not concede an away goal, Udinese looked as if they were going to net 10 us against us but with the unscored away goal and the brillant save we just made it

wow your a delusional supporter, get rid of your bias

        • Mills says:

Offside rule as I have found it explained

For the referee to consider the offensive player closer to the goal than the ball or his opponent, the player’s head, body or feet must go beyond the opponent’s body before the ball arrives, but the arms do not count. In addition, having an influence on the play includes touching the ball, preventing an opponent from touching the ball or gaining an advantage on the opponent during that play. The referee also will not call the infraction with the offensive player located on his own half of the field.

Since Suarez was offside when the ball was played to Meireles he should not have been allowed to turn in the return ball, I grant you it is extremely hard to call that one, but unless I am incorrect (and I very may well be as I am no expert on the offside rule) should not have stood, gaining an advantage on the opponent during that play would be the point worth noting.

I am not delusional, I just saw us with a great number of injuries/suspensions (and so am not including our red card) and done by 2 offside goals.

Also I believe we have signed 3 players thus far with Wenger saying exactly that … No?

  • khriezo says:

In my opinion we dnt need 2 sign any left back, But we need 2 sign a defensive n attacking midfielder 2 support song and upfront. I think Hazard and diego perez wil do the job.

  • Gunnertime says:

First things first guys – I am extremely proud of our boys for the qualities they showed last night. They didnt panic when they went a goal down, kept playing and those were two cracking goals. It was also such an open, interesting game to watch. This is why I don’t understand why neutrals dont want us to do well- when we play well, the matches are open and fun to watch.

Also, a massive amount of respect to Udinese, they are by some distance the most enjoyable Italian side I have seen for some time. It is a real shame we wont see them in the CL. That must have been some side with Sanchez, Zapata and Inler as well!

And a quick word about my personal man-of-the-match, a young fellow by the name of Rosicky. Honestly, that’s the best performance I have ever seen from him in an Arsenal shirt. He completely changed the flow of the match, tackling as well as the impressive Frimpong, but adding incisive passes, circulating the ball quickly and constantly showing up in the space between midfield and attack.

You can see what a dose of confidence does to a team, the last half an hour we played some brilliant football. Chezza is starting to look more and more like a young Schmeichel.

To add to our squad, a CB, LB (I like Gibbs but he is too fragile), CAM (Ramsey played so much better as a deeper lying link player) and Striker. Also, Theo now HAS to be played centrally, it just seems so right given his attributes.

I feel Man U is just coming too quickly on the back of such a heavy match and with depleted resources, but we get the International break and can regroup. I really think getting through to the CL proper was the key goal for this period. Once we come back from Internationals we can start to pick up points and get stuck into the 4th place battle.

    • Philips says:

I didn’t think replacing Frimpong was a good idea at half time (but expected it to happen at 60 minutes – AWs usual subs time), but he certainly proved me wrong. Rosickys run to the near post made the room for RvPs goal. Really good to see a midfielder attacking the goal rather than standing on the edge of the penalty box.

  • Sean says:

Fantastic win last night well done Arsenal!!! But lets put it into perspective Arsnal still need to bring in some top quality players to counter balance a very young side.

Read some of Arsene’s comments post game – ” maybe bring in some players” and “we have Diaby (midfield) to come back” aaaaaaaarrrhhhh. Diaby – injury prone and a tendency to give the ball away too often and a lack of discipline.

Arsenal have an array of talent but one game does not make the season great. With experienced and prefably ones who have played in the premiership would be a great asset.

Arsenal owe it to the fans who have been generally forgotten and more importantly the manager and the board need to be more honest and open about the funds available to bring in new players. Relying on youth policy has been counter productive as proven by the lack of silverware, no I am not a glory hunter but a club cannot be judged alone just by having a sound financial policy.

Lets get behind the club but make it clear to the manager and board that the time has come to deliver some silverware and to let other teams fear us and to dominate for years too come.

    • Patrick O'Neill says:

Agreed but remember how most fans were slagging off Rosicky (me included) but what a second half he has last night, worked his socks off. Come on Thomas you know u are a good player

  • stan says:

    @ spectrum

The present is allready behind you. You can look back or look forward. You look back, wenger looks forward. I know who I trust between the both of you.

    • Spectrum says:

Stan – Like he “looked forward” at the start of last season ? How did that turn out ? Oh yes, we struggled in defence. He couldn’t find a goalkeeper better than Almunia, despite “trying” ever so hard. And he didn’t think there was a need for another central defender to cover for Vermaelen. Vermaelen stays injured, we’re left short.
Real foresight there. And you continue to trust his judgment ? There’s one born every minute.

      • Patrick O'Neill says:

OK, who would you put in AWs place, Mourinho!!!!!

        • Spectrum says:

Why not ? He’s got a big ego, but he’s a WINNER. And couldn’t we do with that ? Or are you content with mediocrity and continual underachievement ?

          • Patrick O'Neill says:

            What’s he won with RM.

  • Bouba says:

Well, looks like some fans here are getting a “hard on” after the qualification for the CL ( we should not have been in that situation at the first place )…

Bring on Man United??? Yeah right, let’s calm down and still hope that some reinforcements ( recruits ) will be added.

When asked about the transfer, Wenger mentioned the fact that we were getting Diaby ( Waoooo I am thrilled ) and Wilshere back…!!

Personally I don’t except anymore players coming, even thought we still need another proper defender… Djourou just can not defend…

Also, another creative midfielder would be great… Ramsey left his boots in Cardiff, he has been atrocious so far…

I would not mind another striker, a proper strong target man… RVP is excellent but he does not have the physical presence we need. He has one foot ( the left ) and he is not fast enough ( he is also injury prone ).

  • GOONERNW5 says:

Please Arsenal fans support your team and manager. Arsenal have just built a fantastic 60,000 seat stadium and it is nearly paid off! The team play attacking attractive football and compete with the biggest teams in Europe thanks to Arsene. Now Arsenal are financially strong give Arsene time to find the players he needs, It will not be long until Arsenal have left Chelski, Manure and Moneycity in the shade! Arsene is building a dynasty here that will mean arsenal can not only compete but dominate English football FOREVER!!
    Arsene still knows

    • Spectrum says:

“Give him time” ? He’s had all this off season to find players. They’re out there, and available, but he doesn’t want to pay the asking price for them, even though we have a 100 million burning a hole in our pocket. He wanted Samba – 12 million, so why haven’t we bought him ? He wanted Cahill – 17 million, so why haven’t we bought him ? Instead we bought Oxlade- Chamberlain,an inexperienced 17 year old who plays in a position that’s not a PRIORITY, yet ignores defence, a position that IS a PRIORITY.
