Arsene Wenger on a humiliating defeat, confirms three signings will be made

Written by Jeffrey on August 29, 2011 – 4:45

The Gunning Hawk - ForumArsene Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted that yesterday’s defeat against Manchester United should be archived as a humiliating defeat as the Gunners conceded eight goals at Old Trafford.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Frenchman explained that his players gave everything despite suffering from fatigue as a result of Wednesday’s tough game in the Champions League against Udinese as he was full of praise for the Red Devils by him described as class.

Asked about new signings, the Arsenal boss revealed that his team is still working hard to find “right players” to add to the squad with the manager confirming that money is available to sign new players before the summer transfer window shuts down.

Rubbishing rumours linking the Gunners with Everton’s Mikel Arteta, Wenger concluded by again saying that he wants to add a defender, a midfielder and a striker as he however stressed the importance of missing players like Thomas Vermaelen, Gervinho, Abou Diaby, Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs.

After the 8-2 defeat, the manager said:

Of course it hurts, it’s humiliating, but you could see that we had not recovered physically in the second half from Wednesday night. We were short in some areas, that is for sure. They have class and they punished us. It was 3-1 at half-time and I think that was harsh against us.

We missed a penalty, we had a chance to get back to 3-2. We tried desperately to get back but we opened ourselves up and were punished. Their finishing was great today.

I am very open if we can find the right players. We have the money to sign players. If we find players who can strengthen our team then we will do it. But I am not the only one to work on the case, we have 20 people who are working on that.

If we do not do it, it is because we don’t find them. We have plenty of players out today, too many players missing. We do not have the squad to compete when we have this many players out.

At the moment, we have not found the solutions to our problems outside. When you look at today, you cannot predict how many players we have out. We did not expect to have Wilshere out, Diaby out, Gervinho out, Vermaelen out and Gibbs out.

[Close to new signings?] We are close to signing a striker at the moment but we are still looking for a midfielder and a defender. [Mikel Arteta?] No [we're not watching him].

    “SILENT STAN OUT”

    “USMANOV AND DAVID DIEN IN”

  • Jason says:

Not Arteta… Then who? Don’t tell me that he gonna rely on Rosicky and Ramsey for the whole season. We need players who can perform in big games, someone who can lead the midfield line with creativity flairs…

    • Rich says:

Arteta is injury prone, plus he’s never been dominating

  • Pat Rice says:

The big problem here is the board, directing the blame on Wenger is right but it won’t make any change, just like getting rid of weeds in the garden you pull them out from the roots.

The major problem is that the board has left Wenger being able to only buy youngsters and unproven players because the command a low salary, Gazidis once said that buying young players and giving them huge wages was a way to protect the clubs future.
This has stopped us shipping out the likes of bendtner etc. and has left Wenger buying more young and unproven players and the excuse of “We couldn’t find the right quality”.

The board has failed us too much, and us not asking the board for answers and accountability is only helping them continue. Hill wood, Gazidis, may the lord bless his soul Fizman, nina broswell, etc must have majority of the blame neither 1 of them have spoken out about issues regarding Arsenal with the fans.

    • Mogooner says:

Nina Bracewell-smith said just that when she sold her shares. She said the board were not ‘with it’ and had to go. Peter hill wood and everyone else just dismissed her as a madwoman who knows nothing. Now, we can see that they must go. Arsenal fans are rubbish! They just moan with no action. Another fan base with more heart would’ve converged on the Emirates by now and demand answers. The board and Silent Stan are taking the piss and putting Wenger in an awful position. He has to spit the nonsense that he does. What’s he gonna say, the truth? All this while the board and Stan are hiding, looking out like some curtain twitchers. I don’t know when I’ll get over this :(

      • OzGooner says:

You need to get over it cos the only thing Gunners fans want to see is their team dismantling the opposition. Gunners fans have every right to feel pissed off. We are the laughing stock of the league right now. But it doesn’t give you some holier than art thou right to judge the fan base. Look at the away support at Old Trafford they stayed for the whole game cheering on the team while they were getting spanked. Stay true to your kind bro and never spit on your fam!!

        • Johnson says:

Its not Arsenal that was humiliated on sunday but rather Wenger whose policy crashed right before his sight on Sunday. Its a stupid person who expects to build a team but offloads whoever gets good! When will he have the team when he is stating from scratch every season! Its stupid and naive for wenger not to be able to see that some adjustments have to be made!

  • Vic says:

    He should buy Nasri.

    • Mills says:

      Very productive …

  • The Saint says:

I think none but the most naive fans expect Wenger to deliver on any more transfer promises that are material. He will equivocate by making signings for “the future” that never comes like Park and some other academy “prospects” that will eventually leave making us really AFC (Arsenal Feeder Club) and say “see, I made signings” when what clearly all fans want are MATERIAL signings that can help us today. Otherwise, we are all being taken in to spend the highest ticket prices so that Kroenke can have a nice return on his investment and any losses will be taken as his personal income tax credits; anyone see a conflict of interest here?

  • along champion's says:

good player for arsenal for the title win:

cahill, samba, eden hazard, kaka, eljero elia, Yoann Gourcuff and marvin martin…
go go go arsene you pick and buy …just three day until transfer window close…

    • jonesy says:

      Totally agree

    • Dan says:

      kaka lmfao.

  • Mutuah says:

    Buy Benzema Cahill and Hazard

  • cin says:

This tam is not better than a second division club

Yes, wenger knows How to make good profit. He is working hard for that. And he did it in this summer well.

How one person who did best for the club one day is doing like this.

He can leave himself……….. This is the thing he can do now.

I am just asking wenger, R u not finding players better than this. Shame on u….

    • Mills says:

Remember there is a board and they have more to do with negotiations that Wenger, he point they negotiate, leaving him to take the crap. Same as Dien used to do …. Lets just hope they have had an awakening with this, Go the gunners, now is the time to be behind our club

  • Rashid says:

Please wenger you should finish this business longtime coz you know we have
A big problem at our team. Learn from others some time. Other team they got quality
Player even sub. How can you compete with them.
Now you want sol camble back. Are out of your mind?
    Ok
He might be good player but not quality for arsenal.
You tried last year. You couldnt make it in right way
Don’t fill the gape because you want to tell funs you
Got new player for flop like soul camble. We need
Quality player. Where you get them, where will you
Will you buy them, I don’t know for now it’s real pain
Some time we ask our self are doing this to improve
Arsenal team or you want arsenal to be in championship
Next year. Wenger we always respect you but this time
We had enough of you. Coz you don’t have feeling of funs
Please it’s time to make a big change wenger.

  • Mutuah says:

Pliz Buy Martin, Benzema, Cahill and Hazard

  • Arsene must go says:

After 6 trophyless seasons, the man still shamelessly asked for more time after 1 out of 9 points humiliating display yesterday. Face the fact professor, Chick does not lay egg, only hen. Glad to see him go together with the board too. This’s truely an INTERNATIONAL DISGRACE. When will gooner ever have their revenge to trash ManU for more than 4 goals? Or there will never be as long as arsene is still in-charge. I will not be waring Arsenal jersey for long time.

  • John Muhindo says:

He should sign 3 players and get more others on loan to keep the club squad strong

  • Kennedy says:

ok, Wenger you will sign new players, when will this happen really knowing 30 only two days to go for transfer window bb closed n Wenger’s stubbornness is scaring me lot.and important querry isthis Who are those player?, or are the same Cal Jackson n Chamberlain type of players.we need maturity n experience for premier n Champion league competition.b4 penning down any deal, he shld consider this.i know he is stubborn but now we need an action n not words from his mouth, am tired of reading these transfer news.wenger sign three to four top class players on these remaining two days.last but not list i say sorry to all arsenal fans whom suffered the same fate as hi did.now i can’t talk am like in the wilderness with no one to turn to.what shame?!, i wish i didn’t choose arsenal in the first place.good bye guy let wait n see what he gonna do this tyme.

  • Bobskis says:

If The Board wont lift their 90K cap on players salaries, we’ll never be able to compete with the big names and hold onto any of the players Wenger has worked hard in nuturing. Hence Nasri, Flamini, Hleb, etc…

The Board are filled with multi-millionaires but are being too extreme with the capitalist ideology to the point of effecting the overall strength of our beloved institution.

Wengers is the best long term manager there is bar none.

Wenger stated he wanted to keep all our players of class, but their heads got turned for one reason or another. If we had the money to bring in and keep established players we’d have a more solid and attractive squad.

We all need money to put the food on the table, thats human nature. The Aresnal board need to recognise that players are humans and not just “assets” to sell and profit on in the future.

  • Wolgang says:

This man is a danger to Arsenal with his kid, kid, kid policy. He has no one but himself to blame. He has just announced a Korean striker is on the way. Meke sure he can score tons of goals. If not, better spend the money on the defence.
Football is a squad game.I believe he thinks his kids can deliver without the necessary experience. The money spent on Chamberlain could have got him a reasonably priced defender. Yeah I know he is preparing the future when the gunners will dominate. Dream on.
The next three days will see whether he has finally found out painfully experienced palyers with kids is the way.
If not,it would be better he ply his trade elsewhere where he will find the bosses aint as forgiving as the current ones. I believe this will be his final season to turn things round. If not he will have to bite the bullet or rocket.

    • Opiyo G.Levy says:

Agreed. Let directors at Arsenal take a straight look at the future of the club. Kids dont win trophies where men are clearly separated from boys.
      (1) The board need to URGENTLY sell Asern Wenger to Barcleys Bank in the position of Investments Manager. The guy is good at tapping great returns on investments.

      (2) Experienced players need be sorted as soon as yesterday. We dont need a trophy-less season

      (3) Arsenal is bigger than Wenger. No one is indispensable. He either recognize that the law of deminishing marginal returns have cought up with him, or he has to be forced to accept it

      (4) I recognize the achievement he made at Arsenal, but sad that he shouldnt let the club slip to where he found it.

  • The BearMan says:

Yes Mr. Wenger every fan feels the pain!
    We all suffering the shame!
We try to tell you this will happen, but all you keep reminding us off, is that we cannot teach you nothing about football.

The entire back line is weak, defensive midfield is undisciplined and as you know all things, we lack a defensive coach.

The attacking Midfielders have passed their sell by date and so is a number of your strikers. Your clone Pat Rice might be good company, but he is no use in a crisis.

Every team will be looking forward to play Arsenal now to pick up points. I am not sure you can turn things around in three days. But I have to say this is the worst Arsenal team I have ever seen! Diagnosis: No quality!

  • Char Ronny says:

We are always looking for players when other teams are always thrashing us.Keep quiet Wenger and let football talk on the pitch.

  • maye akintunde says:

ARSENE WENGER can you now see what your stubborness has done to our great club please since there is money lets sign good players a lot of fans are suffering including me our defence has problem including left back, leave AW BUT BOARD SHOULD BE SACKED they wants to share that money among themselves these damages is getting worse daily when are fans will be happy again since FA CUP’05 these people are heartless!

  • dickto says:

Clubs that knows what they want have done their signings long time ago i see no reason why AW should wait untill when damage is already done then you say we are close to signing that is being mayopic. If AW thinks Jen, Traore, and Djouru are gis defenders then we are finish. There is no more room for gambling in the premier league and our mighty Arsenal have been humiliated worst by their bitter rival. The Chairman and AW should just resing.

  • johnson says:

he doesnt confirm it he says theres a chance no signings may be made kus it all depends on the other team too

  • SanjGooner says:

    Hi all

Recently when I’ve been writing on this thread, I’ve said we need 3 players regardless of how good they are.

I now stand corrected. We need 3 amazing players to save this season. Especially in the midfield and defence.

For the Liverpool game I said this was the weakest Arsenal team I have ever seen. However the team against man u was the weakest Ive ever seen.

Wenger knew fab and nasri would go, and that we have a lot of players our and suspended. Where is the urgency in the transfer market. Why bid £6m? or £10 for cahill instead of bidding 15 – 17???? Now we have to wait longer for the player who could have played against man u.

Midfielder wise i have no idea what is going on. All I can say is if we dont buy a CM we are screwed. No creativity or drive in this team at all from anyone. Apart from vermaelen and sagna who were out.

Overall very disappointed, not in the score line (which is shocking) BUT in the fact that this was always going to happen unless wenger bought someone which he hasn’t and it could have been stopped. Now the players will be on even lower confidence and the fans will hate the team more.

  • uz says:

Does this guy ever take time out to listen to his comments? He keeps saying if we can find the right players! what in the world does that mean? There are very many “right players”.man utd have them, chelesa, liverpool real madrid, barca, totenham all have them.Even the so called lesser teams have great players with mental character which his babies clearly lack.
I dont know how this man feels he can even get to top four with these kids that lack leadership.look at them, they all seem terrified.so much pressure is on them and they tend to misfire.
If this arsenal team wants to avoid the calamity of not playing CL next season,AW should be sacked or they should buy players to fill up all the departments.A clinical finisher,DM,CB,LB,even a RB is needed whether we have sagna or not and a world class keeper.
This man has destroyed what remains of this great team. His problem is that he sells his best players and replaces them with directionless players.
Clearly this club is not in it to win a trophy. They just want to be top four and keep playing CL and thats why they keep taking senseless risks. This time they have gone too far.
The transfer window is almost ended and he is still searching for the right players.
if man utd hadnt disgraced us,his statements would have been very different as always.I have never seen a man that is so insincere and dishonnest. They say he is wise, but where is the wisdom?I think he needs to visit his shrink.
Fabrigas has gone and just picked up a trophy.Nasri will definitely pick up one at the end of the season. The truth is that if you desire a trophy, you need to leave arsenal .until they get their acts together, this club will not win a trophy.

    • Chris Chapman says:

I dont agree that we need a World class keeper. Szczesny is as good or better than most in PL. The problems start with almost everything in front of him!!

  • ian says:

I’d happily say ‘yes’ to Alex from Chelsea and Parker from West Ham, even if they only lasted 2 seasons each.

  • Mr wong says:

Yesterday was a wake up call for the club. The response should not be signing a £4 mill striker from a relegated French club. What this club needs is leaders, people that go into battle, not a collection of players that perform just when there aloud to play. Let’s not kid ourself the current board all the way down to wenger is broken!!! Arsenal need leadership off the pitch. Not a bunch of bankers that we have now. God help them when they announce that the club made 70mill profit and will play the shareholders huge dividends!!!

  • ceesay says:

i still don’t understand why wenger is still here, i personal think is high time for this man to go otherwise this great club will distrude by end of this season. and entire boad need to be sack for their self interest.

  • Liam says:

Simple we have no creativity in midfield and our defence without Sagna and Vermaelen and Gibbs is very weak. Also why didn’t Wenger bring on Miquel and play with three centre backs, we may not have lost by so much then

  • fans says:

buy world class player now or you out……to many excuses….not acceptable

  • decorasean says:

cahill and dann shoud be signed.. as for midfield hazard will be good signing, but dont forget jack and even abu diaby will be back..diaby will be great if played in a more attacking role, hes got height, power and pace.and jack his performances last season speaks for its self. that result yesterday just confirmed the lack of effort, skill and talent we dont have in defence. going forward i thought we had 4-5 goal scoring oppertunities we should have scored.. as for people saying wenger should go, iv heard nothing so stupid in my life, hes a great manager,a little stubborn, but thats what makes him him….still have faith!!!!!

    • Hunter says:

Diaby is crappy and players like him are why we are in this position. He puts in about 5 decent performances a season and that is no better than Denison. All of these garbage players need to go, hanging on to them in hopes that someday they are decent is simply not good enough.

  • Paul says:

Jeffrey, where in the article does wenger confirm three signings – answer – no where. Unless, Vermaelen, Gibbs, and Gervinho will be like ‘new signings’ when they return, in which case, all our problems are solved;) !

  • isaac says:

Arsene wenger has lost he’s magical tourch, that spark is no longer there. There are young bright talented players out there at very reasonable prices. An example is the Nigerian under 20 winger Ahmed Musa, he’s quick and has a head to score goals. Wenger should add a bit of african flair to the team if he really wants to achieve something.

  • steve says:

Last seasons team needed strenghthening if we were to compete this season with 3-4 quality players , we’ve lost 3 of our best players so that would mean we needed 6-7 new quality players, we offload 4-5 squad players and we’ve brought in 1 quality player 1 with potential but had the privelage of paying 12million quid for, a defender that would not get into any other team in the prem lge who couldnt even get into a lge 1 side last yr and was sent out on lone to none lge football,a stricker for 900,000 who might have potential but we wont see him for a while because he’s not entitled to a work permit because he’s shit, and it looks as though we are going to replace another squad player with a 3million pound unknown stricker that doesnt score goals. 3 days of this transfere window to go if we couldn’t do business in 3 months there’s no chance in 3 days just more shotgun signings of no quality, its going to be a long season one thinks.

  • jude says:

I’m always proud of arsenal fc but the humiliation yesterday has made things unbelievable for me…i the team news on transfer still remain like this…we will losse many supporters…you know what means…

    • Tim Terry says:

We staging a peacefful protest at the emirates today 2pm.
Hope to see u there,we’ve waited enough all this years without quality or depth of players,we were shamed yesterday

  • jonesy says:

Please Please please please buy some players mr wenger,

we know we have players injured , i myself have a fan for 30years but yesterday was depressing . Surely you must buy now wenger

    CAHILL …DANN…PARKER….HAZARD must be bought

  • raj says:

I love Arsenal. I love the way you play. your pace, your tactics, your spirit, but it just faded away since our last EPL win….

those youngsters are good… but they are not ready… too much pressure on them…
Fab left coz he loved Barca more than Arsenal.
Nasri left for the money of course…
Clichy… well remember those days when we could have won… you will be screwing up in the D-box, thanks for giving penalties away… now you are away.. im glad that happened.
Ramsey… you are great… you broke your leg, and back with a bang… not enough tho…

now arsenal are just down down and down… we are lack of something, moral low… pace really bad… giving away easy ball… sigh…

I went through hell facing all the MU fans.. even the liverpool fans (dont forget where you were last time-shit hole. should thank King Kenny). Those fans were terrible…
Its fine… ill take it… im still your fan…i support you… please please change the tactics…. get some players(experienced) they will guide the young ones, then the young ones can perfomr later… pls Mr Wenger… We Arsenal fan can only ask this from you.

  • Francis Govia says:

We should buy both Samba and Cahill. We need a hardnose type of player in defense like Samba. Cahill fits more the playmaking style of the Gunners. Together, they would make a statement to the other teams that we meet business. I don’t think we will get Hazard. We may be able to get M’Vila but I am not so worried about the midfield as long as Wilshire, Song, and Frimpong return. Two really good players (and one a leader) in the middle may be sufficient. Arsenal need at least five new players including Park — not three. The defense should have priority.

  • Bouba says:

    Come on Arsene, 3 signings??
We obviously need more, way more…!!

The club keeps selling ( Armand Traore the latest one ) and spending less…

    What is it about?

What do we need? really? aCB, aLB, aCDM ( of experience: ex: Scott Parker like ), a CAM ( assist specialist and free kick specialist ) a striker ( in order to play 2 up front and not our usual boring 4-5-1 )…

Wenger has 4 days left to go against his “arrogant and policy” principles and make more signings in few days than he did in 5 years… :-)

    Sad situation…

Look at Man City, they look lethal and on point and they will only get better… Every year you improve your team, not make it weaker.

  • Ellem says:

Arsenal football team is a ‘way of life” to some people, the loss margin evidenced yesterday was humiliating and un acceptable. The management of this team needs to realize that there are fans out there whose lives revolves around arsenal. Some years ago, when Man u routed Arsenal out of the champions league an Arsenal fan in Kenya(Africa) committed suicide, after yesterday’s defeat another young fan committed suicide, he felt so humiliated, by the loss and even though i don’t wan’t to blame Arsenal directly for his death, i cannot shy from it, simply because minutes before he hang himself he said to his girlfriend, and i quote…” it’s not about the loss, it’s because i can’t see a way back for this team to the days of glory and i can’t live with that”. I think he pretty much summed up our feelings. To the family, we are sorry.
To the management: We(the fans) have given this team our all, buying tickets, jerseys, walking to sports bars, staying up late, insults, fights: please give us our football back, give us ARSENAL

  • Patrick K B Araali says:

Everyone says buy ,buy and buy quality players. But just expect more babies from Wenger ’s shopping!. Even the humiliation from Man U will not make him change his strategy. The era of the Thierry Henry, Viera ,Pires etc. will never be seen again at least with the current attitude .

Word of advice to Arsenal fans:

You need ’shock absorbers’ for your hearts otherwise the worst is yet to come!. This time poor results are visible from the word go unlike the last seasons when we exited from all competitions in the last two or so weeks. Even if good players were bought in the remaining hours if the salary policy is not adjusted the will leave the Arsenal for greener teams.

  • emongolem says:

Mr. Manager, Time for the Transfer is running out…….The early the better

  • Mr wong says:

As I write this there is 52hrs left of the current transfer window. The departures have hit the heart of the team and the heart of fans of this club. Cesc had this club in his heart but went home. He has already won 2 cups and looks happy in a barcalona shirt. Currently this squad is lost Without experience.

I hold my hand up I bought into the blind faith ‘in wenger we trust’ but from back in the carling cup final onward this club has been in free fall,a broken club and piece by piece it’s being dicected. the squad is being auction off at wengers car boot. when does it stop?? It never will and that’s the problem we have been applauding wenger for years on how well he’s done on player returns. But the money isn’t being re-invested for the last 6 years we have 1 of the lowest net spends in the premiership yet we make 2mill a matchday 25mill in the champions league and other revenues total a profit more than 30mill last season and that’s before we add player sales. The fans are then rewarded with a ticket increase and false promises. the language of the club is(potential, belief, mental strength, technical ability etc etc) this is spoon feed to the media over and over. I’m also sick of being everybody’s second team. I used to love arsenal being hated because it meant we were class.
And that is our club! I will always support this club and the players that play for it! But blind faith is gone and only false promises remane. Super quality what a joke!

    • uz says:

when we were criticising wenger, people like you rained insults on us believing your proffessor had the midas touch.
But after this latest massive unprecidented humilliation,it has become imperative that you begin to reason constructively.
Clearly, your proffessor has lost it.he is now clueless.whatever be the reason is not our concern. We need a new coach with the zeal to succed. We need a coach that has great affinity for trophies.

  • k02 says:

Pipe down the lot of you with your delusional recommendations. We are not signing any quality, a 3mill Korean striker oh behave. No ones even mentioned what a piss poor signing that is and your off talking about kaka and hazard jog on.

We need some answers by the club, as to what is going, they have been totally disrespectful to us. If we come to find out Arsene has money but doesn’t spend then he needs to go but i don’t believe that.

Benayoun, Alex have a laugh these are the players they want to bring in? NO THANKS.

  • deluaro says:

Lb Andre Santos is a likely target now. He aint bad either

  • Vicky says:

“Quality” players and “inflated” prices is the smokescreen that he has built. If you see around the world there are very few “top quality” players capable of walking direct into World XI. Apart from them it is all relative.

Scott Parker, Given, Samba, Cahill, Mata (dont know much about him), Eden, Baines, Mertasacker, Michah Richards are better than what he has right now, so isnt buying them an improvement in quality. Prices are not very high. Think of it – when Madrid bought Ronaldo, they offloaded many of their players, Van De Vaart went for 6-7M at Diaby’s salary. Huntelaar and Robben went for a combined sum of around 25M. Bent went to Villa at 15-18M. Alonso was there was 13-14M (but AW didnt want to hurt Diaby/Denilson but ready to hurt the club). Given has gone to Villa for about 3-4M and Steletenburg (hope spellings are right) to Roma for about 6-8M. Samba is in range of 8-10M

Imagine only if he would have bought the right players rather than jokers like Chamakh, Kosc, Squilacci and offloaded likes of Diaby, Denilson, Bendtner, Almunia, Fabianski, Eboue (gone now – finally) and a few others – perhaps Cesc and Nasri would have decided to stay and if not we could have negotiated from a position of strength.

Wenger and our board is a match made in heaven. The current board is only bothered about collecting high profits and not winning. Wenger is only bothered about “his control and style of play” and not winning. Both the sides are showcasing their stupidity and lack of acumen since not winning will decrease their sponsorship deals etc and will hurt in the long run. If they cannot wake up after this thrashing then GOD SAVE THE FANS.

Next year’s CL looks like a very distant dream and now AW who claims to be trying very hard to buy at the fag end of August what the hell was he doing during the summer break.

Thanks Americans for destroying one English Institution which I admired. (I am an Indian)

    • NABOTH says:

yea well,we really deserved it.we looked like as if there was nobody in the pitch.it was as if MANU was on its daily traning sessions.OMG. We need both prayers and players. LONG LIVE ARSENAL
