August 31st, Transfer Deadline Day

Written by Jeff Patterson on August 31, 2011 – 8:00

The Gunning Hawk - ForumPer Mertesacker

By the time this article is published, the day will have dawned for Arsenal. August 31st, Transfer Deadline Day.

As I am currently writing this, Park Chu-Young has been unveiled as a new member, Andre Santos is close to joining him. And another BIG signing (literally!), is soon to be unveiled as well.

Per Mertesacker, captain of Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, and a mainstay on the German International team, has passed a medical and agreed to terms with Arsenal, on what is expected to be a 4-year deal.

If anything, this signing offers us an out-and-out defender. Mertesacker is not gifted offensively, although with his size he is always dangerous from set plays. First and foremost, he is a defender, and I can safely say that you won’t see him pressing forward like Vermaelen does from time to time.

His lack of pace is the biggest drawback he has, but Mertesacker understands the game and I don’t think he will have to many problems with being caught out of position.

Perhaps the only downside to Mertesacker joining is the fact that this means any pursuit of Gary Cahill is likely off. I thought Cahill would have been a great fit. Imagine, a centralback roster that reads Vermaelen, Mertesacker, Cahill, Koscielny, and Djourou. That actually looks like respectable depth at a position where Arsenal have very little depth to speak of.

So, with this one last day remaining until the summer window closes, us fans are still looking for that big signing in midfield. Another big singing or two, and this team will start to look dangerous again.

That’s something that all of us can agree, we would love to see.

  • David Sutasurya says:

I guess the club purposely delay the transfer deals after all predatory club stop buying. Not ideal but smart enough.

  • TheMonk says:

I’d still rather have them at the start of the window, so they can get to know the team and spend pre-season with them..great signing

    • serge says:

only harm done has been 8 EPL points – maybe less considering all teams lose points against the teams we had to play

now we got a mini holiday period where the squad can regroup and play name games or whatever new players do at clubs.

“Hi, My name is Per and I like to defend set pieces”

      • Skavorn says:

This is the most exciting transfer window ending for an arsenal fan!

      • jason says:

ahaha rights he does he doesnt even have to jump cause hes so tall :P

      • John Smith says:

        lol!!
        gold!

  • montreal gooner says:

Cheer up guys , we have nothing to loose ! it was so abject 8-2 , no ?
Now we have german tank in the back , british spitfire ramsey , wilshire , walcott spraying balls up like crazy and in the front line we have japanese samourai ! It cannot better !

    • Shari says:

Japanese samurai? you mean park? well, he’s not japanese, he’s korean.

  • Bob the Gunner says:

The fact that Spuds also tried and failed to sign Cahill tells us that Bolton might be asking the impossible.

  • gunner4life says:

great defensive signings, just what we needed, totally agree with you on the cahill topic. hamsik of gourcuff should now be top priority and maybe benayoun or malouda should sign just for increased depth, come on you goooonerssss

  • Cameron says:

I can’t see Wenger signing another CB after Mertasacker. But I am fairly happy. I don’t know how he will adapt or his pace so would have rathered Samba, or Cahill.

Still worried about the midfield we really need creativity and grit.

Park I don’t know how to feel about. He wasn’t that great at Monaco and is 26 so its not the big signing we need to put Arsenal on the map. Especially not an Ashley Young, Nasri, Auguero, Mata etc. You get what you pay for and I am not sure he will add much to the front line but hoping to be proved wrong.

    • Gunnerrob says:

It looks like Arteta is on, he’s no Cesc but even so this is getting exciting.

  • yobra-Kenya says:

Per is a great addition to the already depleted arsenal squad. This will give room for Kozy to play on the right full back in case Sagna is tired and or injured. Jackinson should be left for less serious game for his development…….

  • 1gunner says:

i`m really excited about Mertesacker, and i admit that i`ve been eagerly waiting for Cahill, but bolton demanding 17 million is rather ludicrous, it would be stupid to pay that amount of money for a player that`s entered his last contract year (we are not manshitty), anyway Mertesacker is a huge boost for our defensive department and am looking forward to see the final day signings, i agree we still need one or two players specially in midfield………gunners keep your chins up, we are hurt but we`re not dead…northbank forever

  • cin says:

Yes if we sign two defenders, one in left and one in center, that’s enough for defense. But still we need a creative midfield.

If we sign one quality creative midfield then we will be bit strong to compete for 4th position. Not more than that.

  • Solomon says:

I think Cahill will come in January as he has only one year left and who know maybe Hazard is on his way as Joe Cole has been signed by Lille as a replacement. What a good surprise will Hazard be!!!! Lets keep our fingers cross

  • vv gooner says:

this is just what we need, BUT, I wish wenger could have signed them sooner than the d-day, so they would have got time to adapt a bit, now after a huge loss, they’ll still need a month or two before our team gets the proper rhythm.
ps. Djourou, Senderos & Silvestre are the three worst defenders we’ve ever had! I just don’t understand what wenger sees in him… he should have brought Samba too, so we’ll have 4 GREAT cb’s to rely on.

    • charlie says:

      ….Cygan, Squilllaci, Stepanovs, Gus Caeser……

  • ruemu says:

Whats going on with hazard saga! Wenger pls get hazard for us! Hazard, M’villa and cahil are perfct replacement of fab n nas……..

    • steve says:

Not a prayer of getting hazard im afraid!

  • gordean says:

I totaly agree with you,why can’t we buy two c/b we need strengh in depth at the back,as for a big name signing i can’t see it happening can you ive been looking for that all summer its been driving me mad but a/w has never made that big step for what ever reason we’ ll probably end up with some one we’ve never heard of.So heres looking forward to a day of checking the internet ever half hour hopping im wrong (pls pls let me be wrong)

  • Okey says:

If wenger can sign a gud midfild i wil be proud of so we need a great midfild like m’vil or benayuon of chelsea

  • Okey says:

Wenger as u kan see everbody is talking of creative midfilder plz try and do someting plz

  • charlie says:

Not one person so far has mentioned the fact that Per Mertersacker WILL NOT be suited to Arsenals highline defending…it will be an unmitigated disaster for a player of his mobility to be caught wrong footed. At least Koscielny was fleet of foot, nimble and quick. Vermaelen too. With this signing we need to change to a more zonal defensive system. While I have been arguing this for so long it beggars belief, Arsene will not see it till too late (just like this crisis).

So, in general an excellent signing but PLEASE address our defensive system too, especially now we have Mertersacker.

    • vladiziv says:

      completly agree…

Mert is too slow for EPL.. heck two CB’s have been the weakest part of Germany for a while now…

      • steve says:

Although hes not the quickest, he will deal with all the set pieces and long balls that we lose alot of goals and points too a season, teams will have to try and work us out all over again. Koscielny may be fleet footed but whats the point if he can’t defend which on most occasions he has proved! Would much rather have a defender who knows his positioning rather than someone who is always playing catch up and giving away freekicks all the time

        • vladiziv says:

I would agree with the comment…
just saying it won’t fix ALL the glaring problems in the D..

why can’t they dig up another Vermaelen :-) or clone him :-)

        • charlie says:

Dont get me wrong, I dont prefer Koscielny to Per Mertersacker…..and yes, I agree he was a good buy and will be an asset when it comes to defending set pieces. Furthermore, he will certainly give Vermaelen more licence to join the attack when he feels like it (unlike at present where either, sometimes both CB’s, take it upon themselves to push up)……BUT heres the important point….Arsene MUST change our defensive system. Maybe two sitting D Midfielders like Man City?? Say Song and Frimpong. But we must i) stop playing the high-line and 2) stiffen up the midfield. This strategy would allow zonal marking.

        • Hunter says:

Totally agree. Kos is quick but really a poor defender. Also, Mertesaker will organize which no one else in the back line seems to have a clue about. He is at least a quick as John Terry and Chelsea don’t sit deep either. Since we have Sagna, Vermaelen and now Andre Santos we have enough speed to cover. Look at the high line Barca play. Pique and Puyol are both dog slow but they have cover. For some reason this seems to be a new concept for Gooners. Everyone doesn’t need to be blazing fast to be a good player. What they need more than anything is brains. We have enough headless chickens in the side to last us, it’s gice to have someone who is a bit more cerebral and won’t rely on physical attributes alone (Clichy, Koscielny, Gibbs, Traore).

          • Scott (USA) says:

Agree with all of that. Vermaelen and Santos can chase. You don’t need both CB doing that job. Finally some beef in the back. It’s been awhile (Campbell). Santos will be a beast moving up the left side and has the skills to do something once he gets there. Mertesacker is just a great big defender. Now I wont have to put my head in my hands and pray on every corner. I think Merts will also be a big plus for Szs in the net. Calm things down back there. I like it. Just for the record. Hazard is exciting to watch but really not worth all that money. Maybe in a couple of years but he is overpriced IMO.

            • Hunter says:

One question I have in hindsight is why we paid 10 millionfor Koscielny when we could have a German international for less than 8. Seems a stupid buy if you ask me.

            • Hector says:

Pace is never needed at the back, its all about positioning and reading the game. Just look at John Terry. Did anyone see Koscielny and Djourou against man u? They lost the man united front men so many times it was ridiculous. Thats not down to speed, its all down to defensive positioning and organisation.

              • Hunter says:

Exactly. This is precisely why I don’t rate Koscielny as any more than a third choice player that we paid far too much for.

    • DannyGooner says:

Charlie, you are right that Per will not be suited to the high line. Without a more dominant midfield we won’t have a high line like in previous seasons.

We actually play a Zonal defensive system now and that has not worked. At least we will have someone in Per that can defend Ariel balls and give the back 5 (YES including W/S) some discipline and guidance.

I think Wenger may have acted too little too late. But nothing can be as bad as the tripe we fielded last Sunday.

    • stevetime says:

christ you people, WERDER PLAY A HIGH LINE. go see for yourselves. he hasn’t even been confirmed and you’re talking about how it’s just not working out.

  • dan says:

Per will be good for us, such a presence has been needed for a long time. Though I don’t beleive he will be featuring as a first eleven player for die mannschaft all that much, I believe he should be for us. The player he is likely to help most is our very young keeper. I like this player a lot, djourou and squil just haven’t made the grade and need to go.

  • We nomaly no as wenger is buss man, why owner of the club can’t sack im. I think wenger can’t make trophy for us.

  • i like the signings but we need one more defender and a midfielder then we will be ok

  • TheMonk says:

Blackburn agree fee with Birmingham for scott dann….does that mean Chris Samba could be on the way out??

  • arsenal love says:

buy malouda for strength experience attacking pace

buy samba or jagielka or cahill (cheapest) for extra depth in central defence or in midfield

take bellamy for free to add someone with spirit who can drive down wing and play in various attacking positions.

take dempsey for 8m for extra creativeness in the midfield cant just rely on wilshere (injuries, fitness etc..)

    possible starting 11

    ………….gervinhno rvp walcott
    ………….malouda wilshere song
    gibbs mertasacker vermalean sagna

    back ups

    park=bought
    bellamy=buy
    dempsey=buy
(samba or jagielka or cahill)buy cheapest
    arshavin
    dejourou
    ramsey

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^a squad with depth and can be shuffled due to fitness and injury and still be competitive for premier league title and compete in champions league to knock out stages.

most important buys would be malouda =(experienced attacker),dempsey=(creative midfielder) and a cheap strong defender(samba or jagielka or cahill)

  • Frankie says:

Great signing Mertesacker will be, arsenal will have to play deeper defensively now and play counter attacking football when he plays, Recon he will settle down nicely. sweet signing. Can everyone stop going on about samba and cahill, Mertesacker is quality, and you can say he is slow but tony adams and bould had no pace what so ever. its all about how you read the game. and samba and cahill would both struggle at arsenal, neither have had to perform with real pressure on them and cahill would of crumbled with a 17mil price tag on his head and samba would struggle to pass a ball without trying to hoof it in to touch neither have european football experience, both would of been arsenal flops.

As long as wenger forgets the rubbish high line teams will struggle to score against us as its the same old story, ball hoofed over the top or the long diaginal ball, lets make it harder for teams to score easy goals, plus no silly fouls just outside the box too.

    Great signing

    Arsenal for ever..

    • charlie says:

Yes, totally agreed, but I said this 5-6 posts earlier and when I did I said I was surprised nobody else had even mentioned this obvious fact!!! It seems many here dont understand football.

I know Adams, Bould, etc…we slow and cumbersum yet still manged to play the offside trap, but that took years of discipline and understanding to achieve. Mertersacker will require Arsenal to drop the high-line strategy and adopt a more zonal system. I just hope Arsene realises this too because if he just tries to slot Mertersacker in and continue to play as we do, we will be hurt….over and over….until Wenger finally gets it. I predict he hasnt a clue.

      • frankie says:

Exactly!!!! sorry about echoing your comments,

  • Babyface says:

I know we’re all looking onwards and forwards but is anyone else a bit sad that bendtner is leaving the club. For all his short comings he served the club well and really came through for us at times. Really like him as a person and i was always backing him to become that world class place player he talked about becoming. Desperately hoped that he would go a step further and become a striking genius and at arsenal. I for one will miss this guy.

    • Hunter says:

I’m sad that it was a loan and not permanent.

  • janggun says:

eden hazard has handed in a transfer request

    http://www.crunchsports.com/category/Soccer/Eden-Hazard-wants-Arsenal-FC-move-as-Lille-close-in-on-Joe-Cole-201108310014/

    • steve says:

I really hope thats true, however after the park saga I really cant see Lille selling to us

    • steve says:

Checked it out…………….its just a nonsense twitter rumour from a fake balague account. nevermind thought it was too good to be true

  • steve says:

Mertesacker is just what we need I think, as all clubs know to play high balls in from set pieces at 6 ft 6 Mertesacker can save us a few goals and points a season, maybe he can teach a few of our players how to jump at set pieces rather than stick ya head in the mix and hope for the best!

looking a lot better now defence if injury free seems solid wilshire and ramsey centre with gevinho and walcott on wings with van persie up front. Just need a big decent holding player to fit the jigsaw together. I really hope m’vila comes in although I think the price puts arsene off. The hazard deal is just a non starter unfortunately

  • steve says:

Can’t see us getting a midfielder in now :(

  • Bouba says:

The “rush” purchases from Wenger was not purposely delay…!!

The fact is the 8-2 hammering last week was a serious and disgraceful wake up call for him and the Arsenal board.

Something needed to be done quickly and effectively before the all structure collapses.

I just wondered that if those signings had been done earlier or even last year, we might have been able to hang on to Fabregas and Nasri, just a thought… I still think that the all “Chamberlain saga” was sad and funny ( misused of £12 millions for an unknown player who will make no impact whatsoever ).

Anyway, what is done is done, but we still need a “superb” signing, a world class MID capable of holding and controlling the game ( like Fabregas and Nasri could do it ).

Marvin Martin, Hazard or Alex ( he is a creative mid from Fenerbahce who score more than 20 goals last season ) would be a great addition…

Basically we need a proper number 10 and we have to stop playing that 4-5-1 ridiculous and ineffective tactic, unless he has a plan B when it does not work.

    • dan says:

Agreed 100%, midfielder desperately required. More work to be done.

  • Bouba says:

    Nobody wants Bendtner…

I guess it is clear for all that he is just a less than average player and only himself believes his own hype.

Wenger should send him on loan if he can sell as well as Djourou ( he is the worse defender we had since Cygan or Senderos, a total nightmare who does not learn from his repetitive mistakes ).

  • summerbreez says:

Glad to here we got mtasacker he is exactly what we needed experience strengths and know how with accurate long passes and admittedly i am a fan

Our shape is becoming to look good hope to here some more good news shortly

    wishing matasacker success with Arsenal

  • Arsenaler says:

I’m not having a moan or something but Wenger bought Park, when he could have bought Forlan for the same price, and hes only gonna last two years anyways.(because of Korean military service that he has to take part in, in the year 2013)
All probably to create a fan base in the far east. (Miyachi & Park)

  • steve says:

Now that it seems increasingly unlikely we will sign a midfielder, it baffles me why we did not do deals with barca and man city with regards to players+ cash when we had the power to call the shots Thiago Alcantara and adam Johnson spring to mind.

Something seems seriously wrong at our beloved Arsenal to me

  • justin says:

PER and VER in the centre of defence = Stabillity!!!! (never thought I would say that)

  • paris86 says:

Arteta, M’Vila, Fellaini all seem possible, i hope Hazard too but first confirm Mertesacker.

    IT’S A GREAT DAY TODAY!

    • Hunter says:

M’Villa is not happening. Coqueline has been promoted to first team.

    • steve says:

It would be if we actually signed a midfielder or two………..but we have not :(

  • Hunter says:

As usual we left all of this too late. Who is going to let their main playmaker go on deadline day with no time to replace them? Ramsey clearly isn’t good enough so we need a top replacement. Arsene promised to bring in replacements for both Nasri and Cesc and he has so far failed.

    Stupidity at it’s finest.

    • charlie says:

Arsene likes a bargain. However, leaving it late pushes prices up, not down. Power is in the hands of the vendor. And the greater the quality of the player in question, the more true it is to say that price goes up, not down, as the deadline draws ever closer. Finally, I agree with your point about letting a key player go at the last minute….what idiot of a manager would do that? It would leave them short with no time to fill the void…..oh, hang on a minute….Wenger has just done that. Again. And he sold a key player to a key competitor (Man City). Again. Beggars belief.

Arteta is a possibility and I just hope to God it happens…..and David Moyes is as dumb as Wenger.

      • Hunter says:

Some of this stuff is absolutely unbelievable. I’m still waiting for the Nasri and Cesc replacements we were promised………Oh wait……we bought 17 year old Oxlaid-Chamberlain. Surely has has all the required experience to take us right to the top.

The reality is that this team is about 6 players short, not two or three.

  • Hunter says:

Gyan has handed in a transfer request and I would love to have him in our side.

  • charlie says:

    OUT:

    Traore – QPR (confirmed)
    Sunu – L’Orient (confirmed)
    Lansbury – West Ham (confirmed)
Bendtner – Sunderland (not yet final)

So, lets get this straight…..two players who were either laughing or smiling at Old Trafford while we got hammered were destined to leave the club within days (Traore, Lansbury). The other two were on the bench (Sunu, Bendnter).

Well Done Wenger. Why did you play these guys in such an important game knowing they were either likely or very likely to leave in days?? While youre at it, why did you take Coquelin off when he was our only defensive midfielder v Man Utd and bring on Ox-Ch (another debutant who cannot tackle?? We conceded another 3 goals in 8 minutes after he came on. Oh, and why did he not take Frimpong off when he was a walking red card waiting to happen?

  • Number1 says:

All transfer talk has gone quite, think thats it for the arsenal signings!
shame as after that defeat, we could all do with a big high profile signing in the middle of the park to lift the spirits!

    • charlie says:

Arteta will be the final deal……hopefully. With this one signing our season might turn around.

      • Number1 says:

looks like arteta deal is off! which is a big shame evan wiltshire tweeted how good it would be to get arteta!
maybe a last minute scramble to gram a chelsea reject!

  • steve says:

Maybe arteta coming in. fingers crossed. still dissapointed though what we needed to cheer us all up was a couple of high profile signings in midfield to get us a bit excited.

Really cant believe from all the list of names we could have negotiated for over the past 6 weeks we have no-one.

Wenger dithers whilst the empire burns:-

Ricky alvarez – even tweeted he was an arsenal player
Mata – could have got for 17m in get out clause
Thiago Alcantara – as part of a swap deal with cesc
Adam johnson – part of swap with nasri
Eden hazard – break the bank for, at least test lilles resolve. oh no what we will do is just anger them by nicking a player of little worth
M’vila – Wont pay the asking price

the list goes on and on

    • charlie says:

Thats Arsene’s way. His hand was forced (thankfully) by the Man Utd humilation.

Just in….Arsenal have made a £10million bid for Arteta. Jeez….why does he leave it so late?? Mata or Adam Johnson would have been awesome.

      • Hunter says:

We wouldn’t want to stop the growth of the young players by buying people that are better than them and making them earn their spot in the team.

        • charlie says:

          LOL. True HUNTER.

Arteta deal off because Everton have knocked back Arsenals last minute £10 million offer.

If Wenger had made this bid a few weeks ago Everton would have cut off our hands to seal the deal. This is why waiting till the last minute inflates the price.

Wenger has again shown that he is utterly incompetent.

  • Haris says:

The only player I see coming right now is Arteta. (maybe Jadson too but nothing has been said about him so….)

Wenger need to pay at least 15M, he wont come for nothing less. C`mon Wenger…there isnt much time left.

If we dont buy a midfielder we are toasted.

    • charlie says:

Arteta deal now off……with 3.5hrs to go till transfer window closes…..Wenger has run out of time. Our season will crumble now under the weight of expectation on the young shoulders of Wilshire & Ramsey. Sad. Really, really sad. Rosicky and Arshavin just dont cut the mustard. There is No creativity whatsover in our midfield. And what happened to the promise Wenger made to replace Nasri and Fabregas?? UNBELIEVABLE.

Yet again the question remains, why leave it so late? We needed at least two defenders for 1.5yrs and you scramble for Mertersacker and Santos on the last day. And Fabregas and Nasri deals have been rumbling on for years in the case of Fabregas….and here we are now with a few hours left and NOTHING.

I AM FUMING…..GET A BIG CREATIVE MIDFIELDER IN THE NEXT THREE HOURS OR I WILL CAMPAIGN FOR WENGER TO BE SACKED.

      • Haris says:

Its back on my friend :)

  • Hunter says:

Israeli newspaper reporting that Benayoun has signed a 1 year loan deal.

Is Arsene just trying to take the piss now?

  • Mark says:

I agree, our area of greatest need right now is attacking mid. Arteta would be great, seen a lot in the US about Arsenal going for Dempsey and Sky Sports News is reporting we are talking with Chelsea about a loan for Benayoun.

  • steve says:

Arteta deal broken down, not good enough Arsenal not good enough at all.

Vicious circle…………didnt buy talent, didnt win anything, players disgruntled, superstars left, fans get annoyed, no money spent on replacements……….. didnt buy talent……….fans had enough?

  • Hunter says:

What a freaking joke. This was Wenger’s last chance to keep me even somewhat behind him. If the only thing we get is Benayoun on loan then I am officially 100% opposed ot him staying as manager.

He said to give him a chance before deciding whether he blew it or not and it appears he has royally screwed us.

    • charlie says:

Yep……as I have been saying for ages, over and over, Wenger has lost the plot.

What he has allowed to happen is not unfortunate, or unforseable. It was transparent and obvious. he is an incompetent manager….and in so many ways now. Fabregas saga rumbled on for years, and now with hours to go he makes a bid for Arteta! LOL. The £10 million would have been sufficient if he had made the offer 2 months ago, like any normal manager would have. Or even a month ago. Or even if he made the offer a week ago. But no…..incompetent.

Nasri….not replaced. Fabregas…..not replaced. Only Clichy has been replaced by Santos. But the rest are a joke….Jenkinson, Ox-Chamberlain…..

He played two players against Man Utd that were to be sold a few days later, and he wonders why there was no team spirit!!!! Lansbury and Traore were both pathetic and both laughed during the mauling. Meanwhile, Sunnu and Bendnter were on the bench when tell too were to leave days later!!

Why did he sub Coquelin as our only DM v Man utd and bring on Ox-Cham?? We conceeded 3 goals in the next 8 minutes!!

Why did he not take Frimpong off when he was a liability on a yellow card just asking for a red??

Why did he persist with players like Squillaci, Djourou, Almunia, etc….when they slowly but surelt eroded what little confidence was left in the squad??

      WENGER….YOUR TIME IS UP.

      • Hunter says:

Unfortunately I agree with all of what you said.

I hear some people making the case that it’s the board tying his hands. But the board didn’t take 100 games to figure out Denilson was crap. Or to figure out Amunia was crap. Nor did they make him keep Diaby who is crap and can’t stay healthy. Or that Bendtner is at best a mid-table quality player. This is all of his own doing.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Why isn’t Wenger perfect?! It truly upsets me to see that my club is not perched on top of the world.

The signings today bring in experience to the side to help groom the younger players by example or by guiding. He did not get any massive, king of the worldclass players…..but who else did? (Charlie- he did get Arteta for the 10M, even though he waited).

Denilson is gone and now Bendtner too. This stuff is not like a light switch. True, it has taken time, but it has happened.

I’m pretty pleased with his selection and I think it’s time for the fans to give this time to gel. I’m really looking forward to the coming months to see what shape the side takes.

PS Frimpong’s behaviour reminds me very much of a former guy that played for us when he was young….Vieira. So he got a red card. Part of learning. But Vieira developed into a club great under Wenger….just let him do his job.

          • Hunter says:

I would love to let him do his job if he would do it properly but he has proven over the last 2 or 3 years that he has lost it.

It’s nice that you are happy with a Chelsea cast off and an injury prone midfielder but I am not. We lost out on others because as an organization we have completely lost it. Both Elia and Mata both said they wanted to come to Arsenal originally but that talks were moving too slow and Arsenal were to slow to take decisive action. This shows me that our club lacks direction and leadership from the top. I would much rather have had Elia that Benayoun who is obviously not anything more than a squad player. Do you not think it’s very telling that Chelsea would loan a player to a direct rival? That tells me that they don’t rate the player and that should be our signal to move on. The defensive buys were excellent but the attacking buys were awful and as usual lately Arsene got it all wrong.

“My agent did have contact with Arsenal, but it took too long. I had no contact with Arsene Wenger,” Elia told http://www.onsoranje.nl.”

Also, I have no problem with a player like Frimpong learning the game but he needs to learn it BEFORE he costs us points. Vieira had Adams, Keown, etc. to keep him in line and show him the way, who do these young players have to look up to? Furthermore you could see the second yellow coming and the manager failed to take him off, it borders on insane that a person would continue with the same policies and players that have failed time after time and expect a different result. I’m sorry but that’s just not good enough for me.

  • Bouba says:

Arsenal just pulled out their offer for Arteta which is a set back as we still need ( badly !! ) a creative midfielder.

I hope that Wenger still has a secret card on his sleeve because Benayoun does not cut it, sorry…!! With the money we have, we EXPECT ( or were expecting ) a world class ( or near that ) signing…

Come on Wenger get on it, you were doing well so far. We need 2 more midfielders…

  • Bouba says:

Wenger said that he could spend £20, 30, 40 millions if he could find quality ( that’s just an excuse of course ) because in the middle right now we are way behind…!!

We need a big name in midfield, a world class player as soon as possible ( Benayoun ! it must be a joke )…

Kaka is now a target for Tottenham and I won’t be surprised if they manage to sign him.

Wenger should at least get him on loan and pay his massive wages, we have the money…

There are plenty of quality midfielders around, plenty… Please Arsene do not give us your sad and insulting excuses about quality, because you don’t have much in your squad right now.

    • Jorg says:

He bid 34mill £ for Goetze – turned down by club and player

  • janggun says:

if benayoun does come on season loan then we need a clause that says we can buy him if he does well as if we dont and he does do well then we are just helping rivals

  • charlie says:

Arteta deal may be back on….according to Wilshire’s twitter account……desperate times when my heart rises and sinks on rumours on twitter for a player who is Good, but not world class.

Arteta is not a Kaka. Or a Tevez. But desperate times call for desperate measures……and get Adam Johnson too Wenger….please…..save the day. Save yourself, and save this club.

    • cweeve says:

save this club?????your obviously too young to remember ian selly john jenson and andy lineghan god bless his broken nose and big forehead dont know how good you’ve had it!!!

  • Gunnerrob says:

Arteta has asked to become a gunner, this is a real tonic after such a dreadful week, he’s perfect for Arsenal. It’s great to see we’ve made so many signings just in the knick of time.

In : Mertsaker, Santos, Gervinho, Jenkinson, Park, Arteta, Chamberlain, Campbell (out on loan) and Miyachi.

Out : Denilson, Clichy, Cesc, Bendtner, Nasri, Eboue

We were always going to lose Cesc, so on balance I’m pretty happy with who we’ve got in, it’s a shame we’ve not swapped Chamakh as well, but as long as he’s a gunner I’ll support him.

    COYG

  • Gunnerrob says:

Benayoun on loan as well, this is the busiest transfer window ever at Arsenal

  • steve says:

    Arteta back on!

  • Simon says:

Arteta and Benayoun seriously? I’ve been arguing the opposite all summer but this is one time that Wenger should hold onto his money. If they’re the only options then go with the kids.

    • Haris says:

Benayoun is crap but Arteta is good.

  • Simon says:

    Meireles! now we’re talking.

    • Hunter says:

That would have been a great signing. I was suggesting we get him weeks ago.

  • cweeve says:

all fit we should be ok didnt see any med staff in the window!!!!

  • Scott (USA) says:

    Arteta!!!!

  • jason says:

    Andre Santos mertesacker Vermaelen Sagna

Thats a much better back 4 thats for sure.

    Song Wilshere Mikel Arteta

    Gervinho Walcott.

Not the same as Nasri and Fabregas in midfield but better than i expected.

  • Scott (USA) says:

    We’re back.

  • ory says:

arteta is the cherry on top; he’ll help wilshere develop.
    sagna–mertersack–vermaelen–gibbs
    walcott–ramsey–arteta–wilshere
    ————van persie—gervinho—

note: wilshere won’t be providing the width but gervinho will as the former will tuck inside between the midfield duet and van persie who will be an out and out striker. ramsey will play more defensive. this system is interchangeable on top except for ramsey who has to learn to be discipline with the defence. that’s all

  • Mr wong says:

Wenger done well in this window. Depth has appeared with these 5 signings. Competition will improve the current team. The new left back excites me most we definitely needed a lb because playing sagna there is horrible. I was one of the few people at the start of the transfer window saying per mertesacker because of his experience and price looked better value than the epl defenders we were linked with. so I’m very happy with his business. Arteta and wiltshere together will be great to watch! Looking forward to Swansea game and a fresh start!!! Come on you gooners!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • True Fan says:

Some of you people are pathetic. ‘Wenger is an incompetent manager’. Really? Do you really believe that? Who would you have instead? Ferguson? Mourinho? Guardiola? Alan Curbishly?

You need to get a grip and see what Wenger has done for the club. Not just the titles, but the way he’s set things up so the Arsenal will be strong for the future. We don’t have a suger daddy to buy us Kaka for £100 million. Until recently we didn’t have a large enough revenue generating stadium. Wenger saw this. He knew what had to be done and did it: an investment, to maintain strength for years to come. What changed things was the arrival of the suger daddies at Chelsea and Man City. Unlimited spending has changed everything, and not for the better. Those clubs will be strong as long as their sugar daddies are interested. After that, who knows? But Wenger brough Arsenal success, stablity and long-term financial security.

The problem is not the lack of money: there’s plenty,it’s just a question of how it’s spent It’s the wage structure. That’s why he buys so many kids: because younger players demand less money, and thanks to Abramovich and the Sheikhs, other clubs have inflated wage structures. This means that greedy players either don’t arrive, or clear off at the sight of a few quid extra. Now you might say ‘ditch the wage structure’. But what would you prefer: a ‘marquee signing’ that breaks the club and sends us the way of Leeds? Wenger is running a business. Not the phony economics of sugar daddy handouts.

‘Incompetent manager’, indeed. Give me strength. Wenger is lots of things – but ‘incompetent’? Who else has won what he’s won and built a new stadium, while not getting into massive debt? There is no one else.

  • Steve of Chiang Mai says:

@ Simon After Arsenal fans and football pundits alike have been crying out all summer for experience – you know you never win things with kids – it didnt take long for an Arsenal supporter to suggest we should have stayed with kids.

  • Mark says:

I feel a lot more optimistic about this season now after the transfer window has closed and Wenger went after some experience. Bringing in the 5 players he did over the last few days will really provide depth and give us what the team desperately needs – experience. Four of the players have a great deal of international experience, four have played in the Champions League, two are proven players in the EPL over a number of years and most importantly all want to come play for Arsenal and have some to prove. There is still work to do in the winter market hopefully and definitely next summer, but we now have much, much better depth and players that can step right in. The moves will also allow Wenger to rotate and continue to work the young players into matches in the different competitions, but not have to throw them out there all at once. It’s funny the one position I am the most worried about now is right back with Sagna as I don’t think Jenkinson is a capable replacement right now.

  • Gunner4Life says:

I am extremely happy with the signings that Wenger has made these last two days. I was actually up watching the transfers with my head in my hand hoping that Wenger would do something and he did.
Arteta will be fantastic, yes he’s old and quite not Cesc but he has tons of PL experience and Everton aren’t the worst of teams around so he is quite a good buy. And will Ramsey and Wilshere alongside I think we have some serious potential in midfield. Benayoun on the other hand is a big risk, he will provide good experience considering he has played for LFC and Chelski which are good sides. But with his injury record I’m not too sure. Both him and Arteta have tons of creativity so it should be good watching them and they don’t need to adapt to the PL.
Now to Chu-Young, I’ve only seen a few videos of him but I think if he is utilized in the right way by the Prof we may see another Eduardo type player. He’s extremely quick, and can score. If he is provided with passes I think he is most likely to take his chances. And he gives us another option on free kicks, as does Arteta.
Mertesacker is a good addition but too slow for the high line we play. It would have been good if Samba had come in also. I’d have loved to see those two monsters playing together. It would scare the living hell out of any attackers. But if Per stays back and doesn’t push up I think he will be a great asset. I’ve seen many comments about Kosc being terrible and blah blah blah, but remember this guy was playing in the French second division two years ago. His reading and pace is outstanding but he is mistake prone which I think will improve with time. Against Barca he was phenomenal. Djorou i think is terrible, and we saw that against United. And I don’t even wanna start with Squillaci. But atleast we have 5 center back option to choose from now.
Santos was another good addition to the squad, he is extremely quick, a fantastic dribbler and best of all he can cross and SCORE!!! Which can’t be said of Clichy, I think Santos will be fantastic and he provides us another option in free kicks. His trickery will also prove vital.
This team has been shaken up with these signings, most of them are direct players and can go at it. I think this mix up of players playing the Arsenal way and these new signings will be the final piece of the puzzle.
With Santos providing trickery and a genuine goal scoring threat on the left, Gervinho in front of him with his pace and direct style. Per covering set pieces and helping with ours also. Verm and Kosc with their exceptional reading and pace alongside him. Sagna and his defensive reliability on the right with Walcott ahead of him with his pace. In midfield Song/Frimpong with their battler qualities, Wilshere’s dribbling and bravery. Ramsey/Arteta’s creativity and best of all Van Persie hopefully not being injured and scoring how he did last year. I think we can go at it and prove everyone wrong. GUNNER TO THE END!!!

    • Gus says:

One of the best comments I’ve read on the gunning hawk!.

  • Gus says:

@Gunner4Life. Your last paragraph gave me goosebumps. I’m so excited for this season. If we win a big trophy this year every football pundit and media ‘expert’ will be eating there words.

We may have lost Cesc, but we have gained the things we’ve been lacking for 6 seasons. Depth and Experience.

    • Hunter says:

Just out of curiosity how did we gain depth? We lost Eboue, Denilson, Bendtner, Nasri, Cesc and brought in a 17 year old (Oxlade-Chamberlain), Gervinho, Park, Mertesacker, Santos, Jenkinson, a Chelsea cast off and Arteta. Of the new buys only 5 are actually ready to play: Mertesacker, Gervinho, Arteta, Benayoun, Santos.

So, we have a net of the same squad numbers as last season but we lost 2 world class players and replaced them with players who aren’t fit to lace their boots.

    • Gunner4Life says:

@Gus. Thank you very much for your comment. As Wenger said, money doesn’t necessarily mean quality. Even if we had bought Hazard, M’Vila and the whole bunch of other well known players we’ve been linked with, there was always a possibility of them not adapting to the PL. A player cannot be judged on the team he plays for, if Messi was put into Stoke I don’t think we’d be seeing the same Messi as we do in Barcelona. People don’t understand this and many fans have been calling for Wenger’s head or a few “marquee signings”. A player should be judged on how he plays for us and not his previous clubs. A great player in a mediocre team would look good not world class. Arteta played for Everton, which is a class below Arsenal, maybe in the Arsenal team with a great supporting cast we will see his “true” potential as with all the other players that Wenger has bought. I may be being overly optimistic but I see the makings of another one of the fabled Arsenal legendary teams that we have seen in the past.
People tend to forget that players like Henry, Vieira, Ljunberg etc etc were not well known and definetely not World Class when they came to us. But Wenger changed that. I think this is the same scenario this time around. And we got fantastic experience also, alongside leadership that we’ve lacked at time. Arshavin-Russia captain, Rosicky- Czech captain, Ramsey- Welsh captain, Van Persie- Vice Captain for us for a few years, Verm- Belgian and ex Ajax captain, Mertesacker- ex Bremen captain, Wilshere- as good as any captain we’ve had in the past even though he is young, Young- South Korea captain and so on…
I think your right that if we do win a major trophy these experts won’t know what hit them.
Like I said earlier money doesn’t mean anything. I think Wenger has shown his old masterstroke and I am optimistic but I think he has got it right this time. And I think this team can respond to the mauling by United and we could see a resurgence that we haven’t seen in years. Lets hope for the best!!
