Lyon reveal Yoann Gourcuff offer – Cesc hurt – Bendtner not coming back

Written by Jeff Patterson on September 3, 2011 – 8:00

The Gunning Hawk - ForumCesc Fabregas

Some interesting news out there today, so let’s get right into it. Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has revealed that Arsenal made a last day inquiry for Yoann Gourcuff, but the French club rejected the proposed loan move.

Personally, I’m glad that this loan didn’t go through. Many have speculated that Gourcuff would be a ideal addition, but I’m not convinced. Injuries have plagued his recent seasons, and that has been part of the reason why he has struggled to find form the past few years.

Maybe he could resurrect his career at Arsenal, but at this point, I think I am quite content with loaning Yossi Benayoun, who can step in as a leader immediately, and has several years of Premier League experience under his belt.

And in two rather contrasting stories, Cesc Fabregas has revealed that not only does he closely follow his old club Arsenal, the 8-2 defeat was painful for him as it was for Gooners everywhere. Meanwhile, it’s not been two days past since Nicklas Bendtner has left (on loan to Sunderland) and he’s already slagging Arsenal and proclaiming he will never ever return.

First off, for Little Nicky (watch the movie, Adam Sandler does a bang-on impression, in my opinion, of our former striker), he would do well to remember that it’s a LOAN move, and that if he under performs like we all know he is capable of, he will be back at Arsenal again, as we once again have to beg some mid-table team to take him off our hands.

I always thought that Bendtner was mismanaged, but it’s impossible to argue that he made the most of his chances either. And when you factor in his world-class attitude, it’s tough to see how he could ever play for Arsenal again. Too bad, oh well, boo hoo. Now on to players actually deserving of a mention.

Cesc Fabregas has really impressed me in the last few weeks, and not just with his incredible start to his Barcelona career (although one might say that two trophies in three games is par for the course at Barca).

He’s impressed me because you can tell that (a) He is still a cares deeply for Arsenal and follows all of the results, and (b) that he is a true Gooner, the same way that Wilshere and Frimpong are, and that the Nasri’s and Bendtner’s will never ever be.

In following Cesc on twitter, I have noticed that when he refers to Arsenal, he still uses the pronoun “we”. He actively mentions Arsenal, as much if not more than he does Barcelona. It is readily apparent that our club is in his heart. I believe more than ever, and maybe for the first time ever, that leaving Arsenal truly was a heartbreaking decision for him.

I didn’t see the need at the time, but now more than ever I am very happy Arsenal negotiated a buy-back clause (or was it just first refusal?) for Cesc. I would love to see him back at Arsenal someday. He’s as classy as they come, but what’s more, he’s loyal. And as Arsenal have found out this summer, loyalty is a very rare commodity.

    well said.

  • Scott says:

    Nasri,who the hell is he???
Any Arsenal fan who has ever bagged Fabregas has no idea.
Bendtner, well,I think 90% of Arsenal fans underrate him, where Bendtner himself overrates him. The truth is somewhere in the middle.
He will have his chance now though,so no excuses.

  • cassius says:

Cesc broke my heart so i must close the door on him forever.

  • 1gunner says:

you should`ve mentioned djourou and how he said that he went to sleep that night after the manu game with a smile on his face feeling no guilt…..

    • Mugizi Henry says:

djourou is not some one i can relay on he is not an Arsenal class.

  • serge says:

Hopefully he comes back for the 2014/2015 season, after he wins the World Cup 2014, European 2012 cup, 3 La Ligas and 3 Champions Leagues – thats if Arsenal dont have anything to do with it!

  • Wycliffe says:

He will everything he wants at barca an come back to Arsenal

  • Tony says:

Indeed, players like Henry and Cesc will always remain as part of Arsenal great history. These people love the clubs , and the fans know it and we appreciate it greatly. People like Nasri, Cashley hole and Adefayour are assholes, and they show, they will leave for money if opportunity arrive.
I really appreciate Cesc for staying loyal with us, eventhough we are not progressing as a club season after season.
And Henry, he will always be the special player for Arsenal.

  • Charlie says:

This Cesc thing is like a bloke who is drawn away from his wife by the girl he always fancied at school. The novelty will wear off when he realised that it was just a mutual enfatuation not designed to last. The club don’t play him regularly, don’t really value him as an integral part of the team and the attitude of his fellow professionals at the club stinks. He’ll be dropped bt Spain for Arteta ironically because Arteta is enjoying the accolades at Arsenal that he once enjoyed and he’ll want to come back just like all the others. Artetas’ retirement will give him the chance to reclaim his rightful place and we’ll see him back in the red and white.

    • serge says:

wow i will be very happy if Arteta can knock Fabregas out of the spanish team, but the reality is Arteta is not of his quality and for your information Cesc scored two against Chile yesterday for a 3-2 victory and is right now in player of the year form

    • Nikko says:

Well…. Your nuts. Cesc has been playing brilliantlly for club and country after his move. This is purlely becuase he has had a full summers break. I understand he hasnt had a proper break since 2007. He woould be doing the same for us if he was here. Arteta will not be replacing Cesc for Spain, no way near Cesc level, not many players are on Cesc level. Areta is good, but Fabregastic he is not.

Yeah we’ve get first say where Cesc goes. If we dont want him, we get 50% of the transfer fee. I think the buy out clause on his contract is 200M Euros. But id take Cesc over 100M anyday

  • rangkunin says:

No argument. He is real gooners but he has to go. like Hanry he needs to pursue his ambition, trophy . Coz it is to late if he leave 2 or 3 more years. N Arsenal was not convincing. If Wenger bought Metersacker and Jose Enrique n one more gud keeper earlier I thought he might stay, But everything is over. Gud luck to our captain.

  • jo3y says:

Fab heart belongs to Arsenal but his DNA belongs to Barca – Shame really!
    Gunner legend in the making..

  • razzaray says:

Sorry to say this as I always loved watching him play for us. But with that said I think the last 2 years he had not had his heart in Arsenal and as a consequence he didn’t perform as he previously had. continually injured in the last year just as Henry was in the year before Barca move. He was our skipper and didn’t contribute at all when we fell apart at the end of the season. He had nothing to do with our pre-season not even to say goodbye to the fans. But played within a week of joining Barca. He left us a year and half ago and we should only look forward. Wilshire (important) and Arteta look good to me and Benyoun can unlock defences as can Gervinho. Lets concentrate on what lies ahead and not the past. Henry left us a multiple winner so yes a legend Fab left us with nothing so not so much. If your heart is beating in one place you should make sure you become a legend before you leave to go home.

    • kelly says:

well said, all in all i think we got a decent squad with some exciting backups though very young.to be honest top4 is the target and we still have to dodge the cups just to avoid injuries.top4 will be satisfying 4 most fans this season.

    Whos Better Vermaelen or Metersacker
    Press Like for Vermaelen
    Press Dislike for Metersacker

    • Nikko says:

Lets just hope Xavi doesn’t turn Fabgregas into… Well Xavi. You never know, wwe might be hearing Fab talking about Wilshere’s Barca DNA soon! Lol

I’ve just heard, Xavi had eurged Arteta to come back to his boyhood club! Lol ;)

    • Hunter says:

The press (the British press and no one else) seem to thank Cahill and Jagielka are better players simply because they are English. Here’s a newsflash for you:

As a German national team player Mertesaker has been to two semi finals and a final is international tournaments. He also played on the German side that played England off the pitch. He didn’t seem to have any issues with his “lack of speed” then. Jagielka and Cahill on the other hand can’t even make their way into an England squad that is average at best.

I’ll take Metrty of either of them any day of the week. After seeing Jagielka get torn apart by defenses from MLS on Everton’s American tour this summer I didn’t want him anywhere near our team. Cahill just seems to be a taller and bigger version of Koscielny. The last thing we need is another defender who loses focus during important parts of matches this season.

      • Hunter says:

        Merty not Metrty

    • Skavorn says:

Okay I will get vermaelen in fantasy premier league.
      Thanks

  • Sinza09 says:

A few Arsenal here a few “we” there and all of you forget this guy left a club that made him who he is, for a club that initially didn’t think he was good enough. I for one hope he never returns or that by the time wants to return we don’t want him the same way he doesn’t want us. We need more loyalty. Fabregas was sulking as basically not as good all of last season, look at him now he is scoring more goals at barca as a sub than as a starter for us.

    • Hunter says:

To be fair the talent he is surrounded by is 100 times better than what he was surrounded by here. Also, if the club had brought in players that could help the team win silverware I would put my money on him staying another 5 years and not leaving Arsenal until the end of his career. Instead, we had a world class talent and surrounded him with the likes of Denilson, Bendtner, Almunia, etc. and wonder why he wants to leave.

I would bet he was watching that mauling we took from United thanking his lucky stars he wasn’t on the pitch for it. The only people you have to thank for him leaving are the manager and the board.

      • Shari says:

From his tweet that was retweeted by a gooner (as I already unfollowed his tweeter account months before the end of the last season) at the very moment we lost to Manu he was just finishing his training session. That means he didn’t watch it, and got the news about the lost somewhere afterward.

    • gooner11 says:

Barcelona never thinks he’s not good enough,. as far as i know, a spanish club cant offer a youth player of senior contract up until he’s 16years old.. Wenger knew this fact and utilised it to “steal” him from barca with the promise of quick first team slot.. fabregas sulking of the team?? well, that’s what the captain supposed to do when the team has been losing their concentrations.. he has not been fully fit for the past few season due to overusing his body since 18, though he still managed to keep himself to the “world’s best” level even with his cameo appearances for arsenal.. this kid here deserve every respect that he could have as he put his heart into this team as much as any other legendary players who preceded him for this club.. he was just unfortunate to be surrounded by some (i mean more than just some) below par performing players..

      • Sinza09 says:

So the likes of Messi, Xavi and Iniesta were sold to other clubs and then bought back because they couldn’t be offered professional contracts at a young age?

        • gooner11 says:

well, that is because the decision is still in the hands of the player in the end.. not each and every player wants to leave a football institution like barcelona,.. eventually, fabregas did just that in the believe he will be given better chance to succeed at our club..

  • jason says:

aha dw he will come back to Arsenal when he gets bored of being a bench warmer and thats no insult to him the Barc squad is just to good.

  • gt says:

I am sure I will be hated for this thought, but I would want to see Arsenal face Barca in the future, with Cesc showing his professionalism and playing a masterpiece that totally lecture our team in a hard way. And hopefully that would make our players to realize that they’re really not that exceptional, and there are times they need to give 110% of what they have just to avoid embarrassment.

  • Tarik Hussein says:

Bendtner just made two excellent goals for his country against Norway.
