Jack Wilshere Injury News May Overshadow Bright International Weekend

Written by Jeff Patterson on September 4, 2011 – 10:00

The Gunning Hawk - ForumJack Wilshere

Every time there is an International break, Arsenal fans grit their teeth, close their eyes, and say prayer that one of our players will not suffer a big injury during some trivial international tie. Unfortunately, today we got the bad news we were hoping to avoid. It wasn’t anyone away on International duty, but our young phenom Jack Wilshere.

The Daily Mirror is reporting that Arsenal may be without the 19-year-old’s services for around three months. The injury that Wilshere sustained to his ankle has already ruled him out for much of the preseason, and of course all of the early Premier and Champions league games.

Wilshere had hoped to make it back in time for the second leg of the Udinese tie, but with this layoff, Arsenal will be without one of their brightest midfielders for much of the season. I want to wish Jack all the best and a speedy recovery, Arsenal need him healthy and in good form as soon as possible.

Given the nature of this injury, I have to wonder a bit about Arsene’s actions in the market. I believe Arteta and Benayoun can be solid reinforcements, but with the long-term layoff of Wilshere, I now have to view those signings with a ‘two steps forward, one step back’ attitude.

Given that Arteta and Benayoun are no stranger to injury themselves, the Gunners can easily be back to square one if things should go awry. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that, .

My last final note on the subject is this: if January should roll around, and Wilshere is still struggling to return to the pitch then Please Arsene, please buy some cover. Please play it safe, bring in some depth. Don’t insult our intelligence with claiming Wilshere will be like a new signing, nobody wants “like-new.”

As for the rest of internationals, I have to say (knocking on wood first), the weekend came off pretty well. Chu-Young Park, Robin van Persie and Aaron Ramsey scored a combined 8 goals between them. Park’s hat-trick was particularly impressive, I thought.

In addition to that, Benayoun, Rosicky, and Walcott all had nice outings for their countries (I haven’t watched France’s Friday qualifier yet, so can’t speak for our French players). And proving that Arsenal still know how to find a good youngster, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Henri Lansbury linked up very well, in action for the U21s this weekend.

I’m certainly hoping that our players can take some of this good international form back to London with them when domestic and Champions leagues resume next weekend. It’d be great to see Arsenal seize the moment and begin to build some momentum after being buoyed by the last minute signings that joined the club.

  • Salvage says:

It has become imperative to question just how qualified/competent the medical staff are. They never ever seem to get it right. They always make bad calls, diagnosis and projections about our players’ injuries. This is the same way they said Rosicky was just a couple of weeks away to fitness and he spent over a year out. The same way they said Vermaleen was out for a couple of weeks and he spent most of the season out and contributed to our not getting back-up for him. Its about time they are really questioned. Its time for the new, and the old way of doing things must pass away.

    • Charlie George says:

Before Arsene came along we were in the dark ages at Highbury. Wenger practically invented Sports Science.

  • ambrose says:

we should have at least six players in every position or else its just negligence!!!!! we have so many injuries every season omg!!!!!

    • Salvage says:

@ambrose, six players in every position would total sixty-six players. You must be pulling our legs yeah?

  • big ernie says:

I would be really interested in that stats that Arsenal has as to the injuries over the few years and the length it has taken to resolve them ….. there just seem too many, I know other teams suffer with injuries, but the amount of players we have injured and the time it takes them to come back seems way longer than the other teams ….. If so, I wonder if it’s training methods, the medical staff ….. come on Jack hurry back, we need you fella !!

    • 1979gooner says:

This is mirror bullshit, do not get sucked in.

3 months is a worst case scenario based on numerous ifs.

He is back in light training already.

      • SeattleGooner says:

Wrong mate, Jack Wilshere himself has confirmed it, via twitter.

He WAS In training, but he’s had a setback and is now out 2-3 months.

        • Haris says:

Yes, and about the medical, I remember someone saying from Barca, I think it was Pep that, Cesc will be fit because the medical team in Barca is much better and that they will resolve all the problems Cesc will have or they resolved all the problems and most importantly that Arsenal medical staff didn’t resolve them, which lead to the question, how good is our medical staff? maybe its not the players that are made of glass? right?

  • serge says:

This is the most annoying-ist habit of Arsenal just say from the beginning it will be 4 months and then if he comes back earlier it will be a surprise and if he doesnt it wont be as bad as saying Wilshire will be ready the following week every week!

  • nicky says:

With the possibility of a long lay-off for Wilshere, it will be even more essential that the projected transfer of Eden Hazard goes through in the January Window. I hope the backroom boys at the Emirates will have had everything sewn up long before 1st January……….for his signature on the “2nd”!!!

  • goonerforlife says:

I dont think we should get too down, its only the sunday mirror that are reporting this and how would they know how long its going to take before he’s back.

Best wait until we get some news on Arsenal.com before we have any more heart attacks !

  • Dom says:

sounds like another vermaelen, pencil him in for an april return.

  • 49Unbeaten says:

Well there is no-one that can give what Jack gives to our starting 11. He is quite unique when you look around at other players in the prem with his vision, skill, composure and ability to make other players around him up their game. I think we might just play the following formation in his absence -
    Szczezney

    Sagna Mertesacker TV5 Santos

    Song

    Arteta Benayoun

    Walcott RVP Gervinho

Not bad, but, we still have players suspended so until they come back it’s looking more like the following -

    Szczezney

    Sagna Mertesacker TV5 Santos

    Coquilan

    Walcott Arteta Ramsey/Rosicky Arshavin

    RVP

Subs – Flappy, Koscielny, Ramsey/Rosicky, AOC, Park

    • Haris says:

Frimpong can play. He is not suspended anymore. Here is my squad for Saturday.

      …………………….Szczesny…………………….
      Sagna….Mertesacker….Vermaelen….Santos
      ……………Frimpong……..Ramsey…………….
      Walcott……………Arteta…………….Benayoun/Park
      ……………………van Persie……………………..

Here is the squad I think Wenger will opt for.

      ……………………..Szczesny……………………
      Sagna….Mertesacker….Vermaelen….Santos
      …………..Frimpong………Ramsey…………….
      Walcott……………..Arteta……………Arshavin
      ……………………..van Persie……………………

      • Hunter says:

Unfortunately Ramsey is far too slow and careless with the ball to play in that position next to Frimpong. I would rather see Coqueline there. Ramsey has lost the ball far too many times around the penalty area recently to trust him anywhere close to the defense

  • Nikko says:

Im sure its just that newspaper seeking attention. I think we should give RvP a chance in the ‘free role’ after all, he did score 4 playing there for his country. Maybe with Chu Young or Walcott upfront?

Im sure Wilshere will be back sooner than 3 months.

  • Muda says:

The league has not taken momentum but our prospect of succeeding is so slim as a result of poor management of d club.

  • Bouba says:

Well, to tell you the truth I am not surprised…

Jack Wilshere played so many games last season, he might have the same year as Vermaelen… Too much pressure were put on his young legs ( Wenger fault again by lack of back ups )…

Also, it is getting confusing, because we are having different reports… First it was a 3 weeks lay off, now it is 3 months… I said it before and I will say it again, our medical staff is not up to the tasks… As a matter of fact the all physical preparation aspect seems to be below standard… It is worrying because we have long season in England.

  • TigerGunner says:

Who’s to blame for injuries – I don’t think anyone.
But then the British Press and Stuart Pearce were criticizing Wenger for resting Jack from the U21 tournament.
I hear that Henri Lansbury put in a real good game in the the England U21. Maybe his potential is starting to emerge?

    Arsenal Forever!

PS, I have changed by Name from Tiger to TigerGunner. It seems like there is another “Tiger” prowling around in other sites.

  • SeattleGooner says:

Just to reiterate, for those of you not believing this story, Wilshere himself has confirmed it, via twitter.

    https://twitter.com/jackwilshere/status/110340389822664704

  • Haris says:

I had a feeling this would happen. Remember the season Vermaelen was outstanding in his first season playing over 40 games, being one of the best that season, well the next one, last season, he was injured all year long, now the same is happening to Jack, in his first year with us, he played over 40 games being impressive in 90% of them and now he has almost the same problem problem just like Vermaelen, first one week then 1 month and in the end almost one year.

I hope he gets back because without him I`m skeptical we could win anything or even finish in the top 4. Something that will be difficult even with him on the side.

  • Shishir says:

This certainly is a big blow, but I think we might be able to cope. I think both Arteta and Benayoun can fill in at the top of our midfield three, so our midfield could look something like this

    Song-Ramsey-Arteta

    Song-Rosicky-Benayoun

And any and all combinations of those. If Song doesn’t play we’ll have Frimpong there instead, and there will be enough experience ahead of him if Rosicky and/or Arteta and Benayoun play.

Some might say that they were both signed as wingers, but I’m not sure; we’ve got enough cover on the wings without them, and they have both proven that they can play centrally for their respective earlier clubs. On the wings we’ve got any or all of Walcott, Gervinho, Chamberlain, Arshavin or if we’re really short, Ryo.

On the whole, I think we’re sorted, and we can manage for the next 2 months without any major problems!

  • johnson says:

at least we will get diaby back soon

  • daveindubai says:

I do not think that we should worry too much. I think that with the club’s fantastic signings (The August Five) that we can weather any storm in the immediate future. Sure, we would like Jack back, but it is not essential immediately if we can put a few wins together in a row with a few goals scored. This is possible. Get behind the team and let us reduce the (awful) goal difference we have started out with. Get points and goals.
Let us knock out Man City (and Nasri) on our way to a champions League final where we stuff Cesc too. Then ask the question: “Why did you leave Arsenal”. My dream can become the reality.

    Dave

  • Bouba says:

I truly believe that there is a problem in the Arsenal medical staff…!! Is it communication? is it diagnostics proven?

It was first announced that Wilshere will be out for 3 weeks, then we heard that he was back on light training and now it is out for 3 months…!!! What is going on?

Remembered that we had the same situation with Vermaelen last season before he finally had surgery…

I don’t understand… This is another fault in Wenger entourage… Wilshere played more than 60 games last season…!!

Anyway, I just hope that he will come back fit and ready to go.

    Arteta, time to step up…

    • jason says:

Again i say this over and over again. This team is a non physical team playing a passing game in one of the most physical leagues in the world, so its not the medical staff to blame.

Also it doesnt help that they play so many games at such a young age.

  • Bouba says:

“Unfortunately Wilshere is not ready. Maybe it is a consequence of last season, he was in the red like I told you and in fairness what nobody wanted to hear. We knew he was in the red in the last two months and we continued to play him because we had no choice. But maybe it is a consequence of the overuse last year.”

    Arsene Wenger.

Total miss management ( lack of recruitment at the time ) and Jack is paying the consequences like Vermaelen before him…

  • SudanGooner says:

Why doesnt Arsenal go back to a 4-4-2 combination while Song and Frimpong are out. No need to play Coquelin.

    • Berk Face says:

Because Wenger likes to stick with this 4-5-1 which has consistently delivered nothing since first employed about 5-6 years ago

  • Skavorn says:

We Really are gonna miss him.
But im sure we can Play well without him.
Here is a video of his best game in my opinion
He Out Classed The Barcelona Midfield. He was Man of the match Closely Followed by Koscielny.
    Jack Wilshere

    Laurent Koscielny
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42cjGa3jLqo&feature=related
Im not Sure who Should be Fisrt Team Center Backs.
Who Should Partner Vermaelen,Koscielny or Matersacker.
    Press Like for metersacker
    Press Dislike for Koscielny

    • Jorg says:

It’s good to see the video anyway!

Off-topic, but gosh, I still wonder sometimes what the hell went wrong from there…

  • Hunter says:

And now Vermaelen is out for two months. How long will we have to deal with this medical staff before someone gets it together and fires them? There isn’t another team in the league with the same injury problems we have. And of course the club knew this and kept it a secret. Had it not been for this Arsene wouldn’t have bought another left back.

    What a joke.

    • Berk Face says:

Can only agree, so much wrong at Arsenal right now. The club concentrated so much on finances, which is vital for the clubs future, but the team on the pitch has suffered so much. SOS UEFA FFP rules…
