Robert Pires, “Arsene must build his team as he has always wanted”

The Gunning Hawk - ForumRobert Pires

Former Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires believes that manager Arsene Wenger is still the man for the Gunners but needs to change his philosophy if the Gunners are to end a six-year trophyless crisis.

Speaking to France Football, the midfielder confessed that unless some things change the Gunners may not be in a position to beat big teams in England and Europe adding that the manager should however be trusted even though his philosophy might need to undergo some changes this season.

The 37-year old continue by explaining that it is impossible to win trophies by just relying on young players as experienced and mature players are a must in a football team.

Pires concluded by also admitting that something was lost as a result of the Highbury to Emirates migration as he explained that although he understands the reasons behind the move, the relationship between the fans and the players has surely changed after the move.

Ahead of this season, the Frenchman said:

At the moment, Arsenal will struggle to compete with the big teams and that’s what scares me. The current team – that was good last season – is missing parts.

We must allow time for Arsene, to trust him. I respect his philosophy. But is it good? I would suggest not in relation to statistics.

Arsene is caught in a storm and I will be the first to support him because I love the man and the coach. And that team continues to play good football.

Arsene must build his team as he has always wanted, with players who like the ball but also with warriors. You can’t start a young team like that and say “we must win the championship”. Ferguson is getting it right now. He built on his team – he bought Ashley Young when he already had Nani and [Antonio] Valencia.

When we went from Highbury to the Emirates, there was a change. At Highbury there was an atmosphere, people were close to you, it was a stage.

Arsenal chose to move for business reasons. It’s part of the life of a club, but we lost something [as a result].

Calm down Pires… We have, he has to change his way of thinking and his policy…

His “way” woul dwork if we were able to keep players long enough. We obviously cannot, because they all want to move to better things ( I am not saying Arsenal is not a good thing, but 6 years without a single trophy…

Even for a young aspiring talent, it is a long time ), and if they are spotted by Man U, Man city, Chelsea, Barcelona, Real Madrid, they will leave.

That’s football… Our wage structure will not attract proven world class player, but raw talents and good players. He made an offer for Gotze of Dortmund, but his wages are shooting at £100,000 a week and Dortmund is the German champion… Why would he come here? Money? Titles?

We need the “Henry”, the “Bergkamp”, the “Viera” back…. But now, their price tags and wages are “ridiculous”…
