Arsene Wenger’s injury update on Wilshere, Vermaelen, Miyaichi and other players

Arsenal will today face Swansea City at the Emirates Stadium with new faces but also injury concerns as four key players are ruled out of the game.

Speaking to Arsenal Player on Friday afternoon, manager Arsene Wenger explained that midfielders Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby are both ruled out with an ankle injury with Thomas Vermaelen to resume training in October after undergoing surgery this week. Also out injured is Tomas Rosicky who suffered a knee injury when on duty with his National team with the Czech set to recover in time to face his old Club on Tuesday in the Champions League.

Expanding on the injury suffered by the Englishman, the Arsenal boss revealed that he has an inflamed bone and will be one month in a boot, an injury that he first suffered when he played for England against Switzerland and that forced him out of the Emirates Cup last month.

Confirming that Englishmen Kieran Gibbs and Theo Walcott are back in the side, Wenger concluded by saying that new signing Andre Santos is not physically fit to feature with Ryo Miyaichi out injured with a calf injury but set to be available for the mid-week Champions League game in Germany.

On injured players, Wenger said:

[Injury news ahead of Swansea?] We have [Abou] Diaby and [Jack] Wilshere (both ankle) out. [Thomas] Vermaelen has had his surgery, which went well. So there are three players out there. The other one who may not be available is [Thomas] Rosicky, who came back with a kick on his knee. We’ll see how he is tomorrow morning.

[Wilshere] has an inflamed bone. He will be one month in a boot and we’ll see how he responds after that. We have got the best specialists in the world to assess his case because it is an unusual one.

He said he felt it the first time for England against Switzerland, although he did suffer from a similar problem years ago. He thought it would go away but when he came back in pre-season it became slowly more painful again. It got to the stage at Emirates Cup where we had to stop him.

Kieran [Gibbs] is back. Theo [Walcott] has been working hard and is fit. All the others players came back from international duty in good shape. Everyone else is available. Emmanuel Frimpong is back too.

[Andre] Santos is a bit short because he has not had competition since the Copa America. He is practicing well though. We also have Gervinho and [Alex] Song suspended but it is their last game out from the Newcastle match. [Carl] Jenkinson is suspended as well after two yellow cards at Manchester United. [Sebastien] Squillaci (calf) is not back yet.

[Ryo Miyaichi?] Yes, he will very quickly knock at the door but at the moment he’s injures, he should join in again on Monday and Tuesday. [Yes], he has a calf injury.

it seems that you don’t know much.who wouldn’t want to have 3 top players for each position.but it is not possible.no top player would want to be at bench.also wages are an issue and you can’t have an unlimited no of players .there are rules

  • Clément says:

    Good news overall

  • mikkey says:

That is a lot of injuries considering it is the start of the season…glad Arsene has got us some sensible signings who can be just as effective (albeit not direct replacements) as our current/ex-players. Really want to see Wenger adopt a 4-4-2 in the future to test Park/Walcott and RVP’s striking partnership with Benayoun just behind them. Don’t forget he is best when just outside the penalty box.

    • Paddywhack says:

If Arsenal lose to Swansea today (and believe me they may well do) then AW and most of the board should go and then bring in either Hiddink or Ancelotti (with a new coaching staff) Oh and the medical staff might as well go too.

I’m a pessimist I know but I really think Swansea will sneak a goal and Arsenal won’t score. I hate to be so downbeat but I’ve been an Arsenal supporter since 1966 so I have a feeling in my water.

Defeat to Swansea will have to be the final straw (and I mean no disrespect to Swansea I hope they stay in the premiership).

      • jack says:

you need a checkup as you are so pessimist.i don’t understand how did you get the hope to be alive since 1966.hiddink and anchelotti better than wenger?sad you supported arsenal for all these years

  • gooner11 says:

i dont wanna be a pessimist, but we got best specialists in the world to assess injuries???

  • The BearMan says:

I would not comment further on the coaches / trainers. I believe everyone has heard the Bear by now and it is up to Arsenal to address that.

Just would like to wish all our injured players a speedy recovery. Their special skills and services are very much missed. Can’t wait to see them back in action again!

Today I hope their colleagues will put in a performance to also lift their spirits and speedy up the healing process.

  • Char Ronny says:

Our injury list is always atrocious! Something drastic needs to be done at the Emirates treatment room.

  • OnDGooner says:

That name Abou Diaby is now synonymous to Arsenal Injury News; when has that guy ever had a clean run? He must be the most jinxed player I have ever come across!

The other question that must be asked is: our medical team competent enough as these players go down and never get up in time as they predicted. What’s going on with our Medical Team?

  • Bouba says:

That’s what I said earlier, Diaby should have been sold some how…
He obviously does not have a professional hygiene or he is too injury prone.

I cannot remember the last time he had a good run…!! useless…!!

Also they need to address the medical staff situation at Arsenal, because the assessment of injuries is just atrocious.

We get different prognosis every week and we are always surprise to see players disappeared with strange injuries or reappearing like by magic…!!

I think that the training regime is not good enough, because few players who left said that it was too light. We have more injuries than any other clubs in the league… How can we pretend to be in contention for anything if we have most of the team in the infirmary when it supposed to matter ?

  • Arsenal14 says:

I’m really puzzled at how we manage to rack up such a huge injury list in comparison to other teams. Why?

  • gt says:

Time to get rid of Diaby when he’s still worth something. TBH I feel sorry for him; his fate has been completely changed for the worse by that Dan Smith tackle. He has become too injury prone since then. He can still play; when he’s at his A game he’s a real monster, but those days are few and far between, and with all the new additions I don’t see his future is in Red and White.
