Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger confessed that his players were down after the Gunners’ 8-2 defeat at Old Trafford, against Manchester United.
Speaking this afternoon ahead of the away game against Blackburn Rovers, the Frenchman explained that confidence comes and go in the game of football adding that this is just what his young Arsenal team is trying to do after positive results against Swansea in the Premier League last week and in mid-week against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
On what to expect from Saturday’s game against Steve Kean’s men, the Arsenal boss declared that many underestimate how strong the Gunners were on the road last season, saying that getting as many points as possible is the number one objective at the moment.
On how new signings are settling down, especially Mikel Arteta, Yossi Benayoun and Per Mertesacker who all featured this week, Wenger concluded by admitting that new players need time to settle down properly adding that he is however very happy with what they showed since joining on the last two days of the summer transfer window.
Ahead of the Rovers game, Wenger said:
You lose your confidence quickly with the result we made at Old Trafford and you gain it back slowly and that’s what we try to do from game to game, work hard for each other and get back. Then the other side of our game will come out.
The atmosphere of course was very down after our Old Trafford game but since, we have put together two results and that changes straightaway the atmosphere in the camp.
[Blackburn a different kind of challenge?] Well, you have to consider that last year we were the best away team in the league and that result [against Manchester United] was a one off result, you know, you cannot take that as a general rule.
What we have achieved over the last few years away from home, that’s what is regular. People forget how much effort we put at Udinese and how many players we lost as well before that game at Old Trafford.
For us at the moment what is important is the points but the best way to get the points is to play well. So, we want to play well.
Against Swansea we were under massive pressure and we’ll be again so let’s focus to have the ball to play our game [so as to] then have a chance to win the game.
[How Mikel Arteta, Yossi Benayoun and Per Mertesacker are settling in?] Good, I believe that if you look at the class of their attitude we were right, at their intelligence level we were right, at their quality we were right.
They need to take a little bit of time, certainly, to know the other players well, to find a good balance in the team, but it is positive.
