Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was visibly delighted after the Gunners’ one all draw away from home in the Champions League, against Borussia Dortmund.
Speaking to Arsenal Player, the Poland International explained that the home side did well to level things up in the last part of the game although he did add that Ivan Perisic’s goal was indeed a once-in-a-lifetime execution with the goalkeeper describing the effort as an unbelievable strike.
On what he told his team-mates at the end of the game, the youngster revealed that he praised the defensive department with the 21-year old also saying that at one stage he honestly believed that the Gunners could cause an upset and get all three points from the Signal Iduna Park.
One of the best players on the pitch, Szczesny concluded by saying that the draw is a morale boost for the players as they have finally showed that they can defend as a unit and can play very well, two things that were very-much needed after a disappointing start to the season.
On Tuesday, the goalkeeper said:
After a goal like that I think we will take the draw. Usually when you concede in the 88th minute you are gutted, but credit to Dortmund.
I think they played really well in the second half and probably deserved a goal, an unbelievable strike. He connected cleanly, but I believe he won’t do that again for a long time.
[But] we gained a point in Dortmund in one of the toughest fixtures, which will give us a confidence boost. Hopefully we can go to Blackburn and get the three points.
I said to the guys after the game, ‘listen, we defended fantastic’, and if you’re going to concede that is the way you want to do it. It was a deserved draw for both sides.
[Believing we would win?] I did. Over 90 minutes I thought we defended really, really well. Even the free-kick they scored from I thought we defended good, but the guy put it in the top corner and he’ll probably never do that again.
I thought we were going to see it through, but in the end we were happy with a point, we have showed a lot of people what we are made of.
We showed that we can play very well and defend very well which we did today, and we have more confidence.
[The atmosphere out there] was one of the best I’ve ever experienced in my career, but this is the kind of game you like to play in. It is a great venue, great atmosphere and a game between two good sides. That’s what you play football for.
