It is not easy to understand what is going on at Arsenal but for sure is that their start to the new campaign can only be described as “not good enough”.
Speaking after yesterday’s defeat at Ewood Park against Blackburn Rovers, manager Arsene Wenger explained that his players weren’t focused enough when they had to defend corners and set-pieces adding that he is indeed worried for the way goals were conceded as defensive problems usually affect the offensive department as well.
The Arsenal boss continued by saying that there are positive things to take from the game although contrary to the Borussia Dortmund game the defensive department failed to keep a high level of concentration in the second half, half in which they conceded three goals.
Fortunately, the Gunners can bounce back straight away from yesterday’s humiliating defeat as they face Shrewsbury Town in the third round of the Carling Cup on Tuesday at the Emirates Stadium with Ryo Miyaichi, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Chu Young Park all set to make their debut for the Gunners.
After the 4-3 defeat, Wenger said:
[The second half performance] is difficult to explain. I feel overall we created many chances, even in the second half.
It just looked like we had a lack of focus for what we knew they were good at – corners and free-kicks.
[Concerned for the defending?] You cannot say you are not worried when you see the performance we put in today.
It’s just not defensively solid enough. When you are 2-1 in front against Blackburn and you know that you are solid defensively, we will score goals.
[But] it was not all negative today, that is the frustrating thing. There were a lot of positives as well, we just didn’t bring the focus to get anything out of the game. Despite the bad result, we have to continue to work on it at the moment.
Defensively we are fragile because the confidence is gone with what happened at Old Trafford and at the moment we do not have the capability to focus defensively for 90 minutes to win games. It is important you do not give cheap goals away like we did.
