Robin: We threw three points away, we keep making the same mistakes

Written by Renzo on September 19, 2011 – 18:30

The Gunning Hawk - ForumRobin van Persie

Arsenal captain Robin van Persie was clearly frustrated as the Gunners were again on the losing side, on Saturday, against Blackburn Rovers.

Speaking to Arsenal Player at the end of the game, the striker’s facial expression was one of frustration and disappointment as he revealed that manager Arsene Wenger warned against set-piece danger yet the Gunners keep conceding goals in the same fashion and to make the same mistakes that punished them over the last few seasons.

On getting back on winning terms, the Dutchman said that tomorrow’s game against Shrewsbury Town is a must-win game as well as the one against Bolton in the English Premier League as it is important to put together a number of positive results.

So far, the Gunners only collected four points from their first five domestic games as they only defeated Swansea City and suffered defeats against Liverpool, Manchester United and Blackburn, conceding a total of 14 goals.

On Saturday, the 28-year old said:

We conceded the second and third goals quite soon after each other, so maybe that was a bit of a setback because we didn’t expect that. The boss spoke about not giving away free-kicks easily, and you see how they scored.

I don’t blame the guys because anyone can score an own goal, it’s a bit unlucky. But we conceded very similar goals against Blackburn and that is frustrating.

As I said before, every game starts with nil nil but this stuff happens too often you know, we just keep making the same mistakes over and over again and sometimes that really surprises me.

It is the reality now, we have to deal with that and we have to look ahead. We have a game on Tuesday again and we must give our maximum. I think we have to look at it game by game without too much looking ahead because we just threw three points away today, very very cheaply.

[Getting back on track against Bolton?] It’s very important, even today, I told the boys before the game that today is a big big game, that we had to win but we just can’t do it at the moment.

But that is our aim for the next couple of games, we need to win games after each other not just one game and then a draw or then we lose.

We just we just need a couple of good weeks in the Premier League where we get a lot of points, and hopefully we can start next week against Bolton.

There is lots of time [left this season], but at some point you need to pick yourself up and prove what you are capable of. We are not doing that at the moment and are not consistent enough.

flawed plan – this team can’t defend

  • luke says:

If it persists, and Wenger is only putting TRUST in youth, not HELP,like real solid signings and ENHANCHED coaching, there will be more exodus and it will take mega bucks, new owner and a lot more years to be able to compete for silverware and quality players. What a waste it would be for not dealing with the real issues so obvious.

All this negativity is really because we lost that Carling cup.

If we had won it the situation at Arsenal would be completely different right now.

I was depressed to be honest after they lost that Carling cup i didnt say much for like a week i can see why the players completely feel apart after the defeat.

  • Bouba says:

Luke, I agree with your views, but we all know that we are done with the signings… As a matter of fact those recruits were brought in because we were hammered by Man U.

Arsene Wenger still believed before the “Man United battering” that he had a strong squad capable of bringing titles in his deluded world.

Van Persie is the captain and needs to tell his boss, what’s up!

All the specialists ( they cannot all be wrong ) are urging him to add a defensive coach to his staff. All the ex Arsenal players are urging him to change his tactics. Wenger is surrounded by “yes” men…!!

There is obviously something wrong going on, something is not working. But his stubbornness is not helping the Arsenal cause.

None of our players will get in the Man United first team, NONE… Even Van Persie will be on the bench ( Rooney is better ) as would Wilshere, Gervinho, etc. The only one I could see get in that squad is Vermaelen.

I cannot believe I am saying that, but Tottenham look ( just look ) even better than us.

    • uz says:

At the moment, they are better than us

    • Berk Face says:

      Rubbish.

Wilshere > Anderson, Carrick, Fletcher, Cleverley
      …as is Arteta

And yes Spurs are better than us. Without Fabregas Arsenal are nothing. Wilshere is the next most important player and obviously he’s been out.

      • paris86 says:

yes i agree and it’s true but we don’t have Jack available, same as Vermaelen. ManU are more successful because everything goes through their wingers so they can have rubbish midfielders like Carrick and Fletcher, another thing is that Nani and Young don’t cut Rooney or Hernandez out like Gervinho and Arshavin did this week with RvP. We need to build around van Persie and not cutting him out because it’s the same as playing Afobe or anyone else then…

  • ArseneGbenga says:

@Bouba, what else can i say? You’ve just aired out my views as far as AFC is concern; may God bless your sense of reasoning the more.

YES! and YES! RVP would have been a bench warmer in a club where there’s enough quality not to talk about players like Arshavin, Ramsey, Walcott, Gibbs etal getting into first XI….terrible.

  • sirgovernor says:

its not the player its the manager wenger cannot lift his player if the results dont go his way
    wenger himself need a lift
solution sack him and dont give me that in wenger we trust crape we are arsenal fans not arsene wengers fans he had 6 years of trust to play with not anymore

  • Berk Face says:

We keep making the same mistakes?

What? After years of these post-apocalyptic interviews saying how the players have learned from their mistakes and matured and are now ready… they’re STILL making these clangers?

clumsy slow defenders prone to lapses in concentration
short wimpy midfielders that don’t track and don’t get in the opposition penalty area
forwards that prefer to drop deep rather than work the defenders they’re up against
a manager that seems incapable of firing a rocket up the players ****s
    manager surrounded by yes men
a board that care only about the balance sheet where Wenger is excellent

RVP is right – we’ve heard it all before, actions speak louder than words though.
