Arsene Wenger admits new defenders need time, reveals why he signed Park

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted that new defenders Andre Santos and Per Mertesacker need time to properly settle down at Arsenal.

Speaking to Arsenal Player ahead of tonight’s Carling Cup game against Shrewsbury Town, the Frenchman explained that the two were not to blame for the conceded goals on Saturday against Blackburn Rovers adding that just like any other new signings they need time to build a strong understanding with the other players and fit in the mechanism of his formation.

Asked about Chu Young Park who is set to feature today, the Arsenal boss declared that the reason why he signed him is because he is good in every area; good in the air, technically gifted, very mobile and one who can play behind the main striker.

Wenger concluded by praising the travelling fans from the weekend, by him described as fantastic as he explained that the team has a good spirit, a good mentality, a good attitude and will surely bounce back after a disappointing start to the season.

On Monday, the manager said:

[If new defenders need time to settle down?] Yes but I believe it’s a little question of time, timing, [Andre] Santos is new, [Per] Mertesacker is new but there were not specially guilty for goals [against Blackburn]. But maybe as a unit we need for time to work, yes.

[Why I went for Park?] He is good in every area. He is good in the air, good technically, he is mobile and that’s why he is an adaptable striker who can play up front behind the striker.

That’s why we went for him. What I like with him is that he is very mobile and that’s the basis of our game.

Again on Saturday in Blackburn there were thousands of Arsenal fans and they were fantastic. We need to be united and I am very grateful for their attitude on Saturday. They were absolutely fantastic.

The team has a good spirit, a good mentality, a good attitude and that will come out longer term. We have had a bad start but I believe we can bounce back and be very strong this season.

Helo my fellow great gunners, am optimistic we will not just win today but the carling cup is ours this season.

  • Alex says:

I agree with him, once the defence gels I’m sure the number of goals conceded will decrease. Vermaelen will return from injury eventually, with time Mertesacker and Santos will adapt to the pace of the EPL, and Koscielny and Djourou will become fine players if their development continues at the rate that it has been. I still believe a specialist defensive coach in the form of Keown or Bould is what is needed.

Also, although Koscielny and Djourou werent brilliant on Saturday, i think they deserve more credit than they have received in recent times. 6 months ago, they formed a brilliant partnership and Arsenal had a decent unbeaten run going. Djourou in particular was considered a top defender around dec until his injury away to Newcastle. Since then his confidence and form have dipped, but at the time, many admired his strength, reading of the game and in particular his consistency. It is sad that now many are comparing him to Squillaci when it comes to throwing away goals. I hope he bounces back, the lad deserves better!

Oh!, I`ve got it all wrong I thought van Persie`s most effective spot was just behind the main striker ,that being Parks……silly me.

    • henryfan says:

That is exactly right. He’s acquired another striker who plays off the main striker, the point man, but (1) he has no point man, and (2) rarely plays two up front these days, and (3) already has Van Persie, who also plays best off of a main striker, like Henry!!!!!

It’s all so crazy and infuriating and self-evident year after year that I’m losing my hair!!!

  • Bouba says:

We have the record of the least goals conceded in CL during the 2005-2006 campaign ( 4 goals ).
At that time, Martin Keown was our defensive coach.
Football is magical but it is also logic and simple tactics.

Wenger announced that he will not hire help for the defence manoeuvres ( I think his ego is getting the best of him…)

I still think that RVP is not mobile enough and goes back to deep in the middle, that is why he would be fantastic if he was playing behind a striker like Park ( or even Chamakh ).

But Wenger is making the decisions, and nothing is working at the moment.
