Arsene Wenger on the performance of Oxlade-Chamberlain and his first-team opportunities

Written by Jeffrey on September 21, 2011 – 4:45

The Gunning Hawk - ForumArsene Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was clearly happy after the Gunners reached the fourth round of the Carling Cup after a tricky game against Shrewsbury Town, on Tuesday.

Speaking after the game, the Frenchman explained that the starting eleven included youth and experience as he praised 18-year old Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and 20-year old Francis Coquelin who impressed against the Shrews with the former scoring the second goal of the game with an impressive long-range effort.

On the Englishman, the Arsenal boss declared that he improved as the game progressed and was exceptional in the second half adding that he will soon “knock on his door” to secure a regular place in his starting eleven.

Wenger concluded by praising centre-back Johan Djourou who looked to be the one to blame for the conceded goal with the manager again insisting that he doesn’t care about speculation as his near-future objective is to do well in charge of the Club.

After the Carling Cup win, Wenger said:

We played a young team with a mixture of young players and experienced players.

We took a gamble and it worked because you could see some players, who we haven’t seen so much of like Oxlade-Chamberlain and Coquelin, have done extremely well and that is positive for the future.

[If I panicked at the end of the first half?] No, I was very calm at half time because panic doesn’t help. I felt that if we maintained the pace in the game we had a good chance to win the game.

[Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain grew through the game and became stronger and stronger. In the first half he was a bit timid and suddenly he grew in stature in the second half.

It was unbelievable. What came out, you didn’t expect it after the first half. He became stronger and stronger.

You could see that he will be a first-team player here, that is for sure. He still has things to work on but, very quickly, he will be knocking on the door.

[Johan Djourou?] He was very good in the second half. In the first half, he was surprised on the goal. In the second half, he had a good performance.

[My future?] Whether I work here for the next 10 years or the next day here, I will give my maximum for the Club.

I will let other people assess the situation. I focus on doing well for this club, that is all. I am not bothered at all by all this speculation.

    In response to LUCKY.
Mr Lucky, you are joking. Why did you think that E P L has not started after 5 matches and Arsenal 11 points behind leader M U? M U has integrated completely as it is evidenced in their performance with each game.Wenger left till dead line day and that is where the problem is,am sure they will improve after integration but when and how they meet up with the first three teams is my worry. So why do you trust his judgement that has failed to yield dividend after 6 years?

    • soji says:

I believe that it is better late than never. joining the band wagon of those condemning wenger for going into the market late is like flogging a dead horse. what is done cannot be undone. let us all support the team if indeed you are a true gunner or are you a goner? I want to say that, though the team is finding it hard to win games consistently now but the boys are doing all they can to win games. They need your words of encouragement at all time.

    • Haris says:

Thank you. I can`t believe that there are so many deluded fans.

Jut reading his comment made me sick, what the hell is he talking about!!!

  • jason says:

“man U wont go far” how do you mean exactly?

It sounds like you dont think they will win anything and i can assure you they will win the league.

  • Theohari says:

Any match reports of the game?

    • Haris says:

I guess he didn’t watch the game. I didn’t too, couldn’t find a streaming link.

  • Rendie says:

I am pleased with the performance of the team, but not Djourou. He was to blame for the goal we conceded last night and its nndt last night only. The mistakes between him and Kos can bring a very scary statistic. Almost every goal we have conceeded since the Carling cup final, 90 percent of them are between the two with 9 percent on Squill. If we can by any means sit all those three out, we could have a strong defence which will concentrate the whole 90 minutes. We have failed where we should have excelled, our mistakes shows.

    • Hunter says:

An even more alarming stat is that we gave up over 80% of our goals with Koscielny on the pitch. A higher ratio than any other defender.

  • Jason says:

Nice say Wenger. You deserve credit with the club achievement since 1996. Your commitment is always high level and I respect you.

Alex, the ox, gonna be a star player for us soon enough. Seem like we have another British talent now. Jack Wilshere, Alex, Gibbs, Walcott, Lansbury… These player will shine for us in the future, not very far away though.

    • Ken says:

      In reply to Jason
      Yes, too true.
I have heard this comment every year since eight years. I hope only to see it come to reality before i leave this world.
Keep the faith , pal and in Wenger you will rust (just like me).

  • Charlie says:

Fair enough defend Djourou in public but please don’t put him in the starting XI again Arsene.

  • Serena says:

Arsène Wenger is one of the best managers that the English Premier League has ever had. He has the knack of discovering new talents and giving them opportunities to prove themselves, which yesterday’s match clearly proves.

Way to go Arsène, am sure the season will improve much after the shaky start.

    • Hademe P says:

No doubt that Wenger can discover talent even right frm the womb, but where are they. Where is Kolo, Flamini, Adebayor,Fab,Nas,Ashley,Clitchy and host of others. He discovers talent only for profit. He started this philosophy years ago but where are the dividend.Just watch, in few years to come these set of players will not be in arsenal again and the circle will start again.

      • JohnStilton says:

That is what people dont seem to understand. Financial fairplay is happening, who is going to survive? Arsenal, what is going to happen to Liverpool, Man U when the debt collector are going to ring the door? Or when mega rich people are fed up to toy with their club?
In the near future prices for transfer are going to drop. Salary will also go down.
Clubs won t be able to spend more of what they earn! I wonder how Man U will pay wages, and will be incapable of recruiting.
That is why at the moment, Man c is massively investing in developing their own players.
Ultimately everyone will act as Arsenal, a limited budget for transfer, a structure for wages, and a youth policy.
Arsenal will be ten years ahead winning EPL year after year…

        • Hunter says:

Financial fairplay is a fantasy. The club is trying to rely on UEFA to make it competitive again and it’s not going to work. All an owner has to do is sign a sponsorship deal with one of his other businesses and there is nothing they can do to stop it no matter what the amount is.

Man City for example, got a £400 million sponsorship deal from Etihad. Even though it’s an obvious farce there is nothing UEFA will do about it because it’s a “legitimate” sponsorship deal. Everyone who thinks that FFP is going to bring us back level with everyone else is living in fantasy land.

The club should not be relying on someone else to make it competitive. The incompetent CEO and the Manager are supposed to be the ones doing that and if they can’t, it’s time to fire them.

Also, I am sick and tired of hearing about “potential” and “the future” where players are concerned. It’s a future that never materializes and we are fed the same bull$hit year after year. Denilson supposedly had “potential”. So did Diaby, Bendtner, etc. They are all mid table players at best. Hell We couldn’t even GIVE Denilson away.

It’s been almost 7 years, how much more in “the future” will it be before this team can actually compete?

          • Gunnerrob says:

Wenger built three teams with potential, judging him after 15 years you’d have to say he hasn’t done too badly.

Anelka, Petit, Vieira, Petit, Lauren, Lyngberg, Cole, Kanu, Henry, Gilberto, Hleb,Clichy, Rvp, Cesc, Nasri, Adebayor, Sagna, Vermaelen, Song

All unheard of before Wenger gave them a chance to Shine on the big stage, not once with all his success has he ever bought a ready made star, unless you count Arshavin and Sol, you forget, he made each and every one of them stars, and now for the next generation of stars :-

Ryo, Szcheszny, Wilshere, Francis Coquolin, Ramsey, Oxlaide-Chamberlain, Kosielny, Park, Jenkinson, Frimpong. These are the future of Arsenal, not some fantasy of copying City and spending half a billion pounds on ready made stars and making us bankrupt.

Wenger will meet this crisis head on and come out the other side stronger and Arsenal will be better for it. This is the best group of youngsters anywhere in the world, let’s be thankful they are at Arsenal.

            • Hunter says:

Once again we have someone using the false argument of spending loads of cash. This problem would never have happened if the manager had been wise in the market and not pinned his hopes on some absolute garbage players. There is absolutely no excuse for leaving Almunia in the goal, not buying a center back, etc. We could have won the league if we had not had Almunia in goal a couple of seasons back but Arsene refused. This is of hos own doing and no one else. He didn’t need to spend loads of cash. He needed to spend wisely and he did not. Look what he did do when he finally bought a center back. Koscielny for 10 million? That’s a complete joke.

Also, I don’t know what planet you are living on but Barca are putting out players leaps and bounds ahead of what you listed above. You seriously think Koscielny is among the best “young” players in the world? He is 25 and not improving. That’s not young nor is it good. Ramsey? No way. Wilshire, Wojo and possibly Coqueline are the only ones in that list who can be counted among the best young players in the world. The rest are nowhere near or are well beyond being considered “young”.

            • Hunter says:

Also, some of those players you listed as ones Arsene ‘uncovered” were already successful before they came.

Sagna – French defender of the year
              Vermaelen – jAjax captain
Gilberto – Was already a world cup winner.

And for all of these who he did well with there were also those that were failures:

              Cygan
              Senderos
              Denilson
              Almunia
              Luzny
              Reyes
              Bendtner
              Inamoto

So there are two sides to everything. As fans we need to step back and take an objective look. The manager did well in some places in the past and not so well in some places. But, right now he has us at an all time low and that is a problem. We have been in a steady decline for the last 6 years. When does it end?

              • Gunnerrob says:

Aha objectivity, now there’s a thought, go on Hunter I dare you, you might even enjoy it.

How you can say that players like Oxlaide-Chamberlain and Ryo are not needed by the club before they’ve even been given a chance is beyond me. Chamberlain will most likely be a big part of the first team this year and when he shines I hope you can “Objectively” tell us how you were wrong about him.

As for those rejects you mentioned, well yes they didn’t perform for us (you see Objectivity), but when you gamble on a young talent, it is exactly that, a gamble, sometimes it pays off sometimes it doesn’t. Wenger will be using the same coaching methods for the successful players as he does with the failures, so perhaps the players might have a large amount of responsibility for their development. You can’t train hunger, desire, passion, drive. Those things are either in you or they aren’t.

                • Hunter says:

AOC and Ryo are definitely ones for the future but a club can’t always be yammering on about the future and gambling on kids without addressing the present. The future means nothing if your best players are constantly leaving and you can’t compete on the pitch.

There are players who are helpful and players who are necessities. Neither Ryo nor AOC were necessities. A defender was a necessity 4 seasons ago as was a goalkeeper. Both were completely ignored.

      • jason says:

Thats very harsh those players havent showed him the loyalty that he deserves.

Flamini, clichy and nasri left for money.

Toure left because he didnt get along with gallas for me this is a pathetic excuse.

Gallas and Adebayor both has bad attitudes you can see how little respect they had for the club they both played for Spuds.

And Cesc left for Barcelona which i understand to an extent.

        • Hunter says:

To be honest after seeing the mess we are in I can’t say that I blame Nasri or Clichy. That had no chance of winning anything with us so why are they traitors for moving on? The club could be called liars for making promises they didn’t keep so there is plenty of blame to go around.

As for Flamini, he was offered less to stay than the salary Diaby is on. That’s an insult and I would have left as well. He’s gone on to win the Scudetto with Milan so it looks to me like he made a good choice.

You can’t go around making promises to players about improving the side and never following through and then think they will stay around. The club blew it and so far they still haven’t gotten it right.

After listening to the garbage spewed from Gazidis yesterday I think the whole lot of them need to be sacked. For some reason they think they can take more and more from supporters and provide a continually inferior product. Then blow a bunch of smoke up us and expect us to buy another year of empty promises and even worse performances.

  • davi says:

Sounds like it was a good game for the confidence. Some of these youngsters were involved in the Utd thrashing, and were probably suffering a bit. The fact that shrewbury scored first seemed to help in fact because it forced the players out of their shells. Hopefully this will kick start Djourou in particular, but also jenkinson and gibbs seemed to up their games. Coquelin and Oxlade apparently grew into the game, and I had the same impression of Miquel from the commentary.

  • The BearMan says:

Another big hole was created in the game last night and against better opposition we would have been punished. Whenever our right back goes forward, he leaves a gaping hole in the line of defense. Why so? He has a reluctance to get back and appears to enjoy the midfield role more than his defensive one. But for Coquelin’s full concentration last night it might have been a different result. Carl has to learn immediately he dilivers the ball, he must make certain he is not left stranded-in-no-man’s-land, but get back to provide cover for the defense.

Alex and Coquelin were brilliant on the ball last night and after the shaky start and a few wasted passes Gibbs started to grow in confidence.

  • Simon says:

It’s natural that Oxlade-Chamberlain gets the attention but Coq was best on the field. Very impressive.

    • Berk Face says:

He was one of the few that looked reasonable at Old Trafford too

      • Hunter says:

I’ve said for a while that I prefer him to Frimpong at the moment. The time he spent in Ligue 1 last season did him a world of good.

  • Lift Services says:

its good to hear coquelin was the best player on the park, but the attention seems to be on oxlade chamberlain, which yes maybe the money spent needs to be justified, but he should get no more praise than anyone else, the future is bright, we just need to get off wengers back and trust in him!

  • Johnson says:

Wenger’s gamble on young talent has’nt work for many years let him change the policy is not working.let him borrow aleaf from sir ferguson

  • mebo says:

coqullein is our new flamini…im confident he will get better than him..he pass is very incredible as alonso..commom coq!!

  • 1gunner says:

Djourou`s one of the worst defenders i`ve ever seen in my life, i really don`t understand how someone like him can get a chance to play in a club like arsenal……complete rubbish, this pretty much materializes our main problem (we have many players that if life was fair they would never have the honor of wearing the arsenal shirt) i`m sick and tired of our worthless defenders……

  • Rokabox says:

one comment, Djuouro clanger for the 1st goal, he was like pinned to the ground,
he did not even try to jump to head the ball or at least distract the person behind him.
awful just awful, he was even cemented for few moments when the Shrewsburys players were celebrating the goal. it is like he just woke up from a coma or something. shame he was one of the better things arsenal had last season till he got injured, or maybe it is that squillaci was so bad that Djuouro looked like Tony Adam in comparison

  • Bouba says:

I red an interesting article on a french sports magazine ( France Football ) and they were saying that Chamberlain is already better than Walcott, because he has “a football brain”, he is more agile with the ball and more focus.

They also said that Walcott had already reach is potential as his major quality was his pace ( and that’s about it, other than that he does not bring anything, but pace ). Chamberlain could grown football and skill wise because his baggages ( when you see him play ) will conduct a world class outcome.

As a matter of fact they were comparing him to Denis Bergkamp…

    • Berk Face says:

Myles Palmer (ANR) was saying similar – think he might have seen the same article
