New Arsenal signings Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Andre Santos were both delighted to score for the Gunners in their Champions League debut.
Speaking after the game, the Englishman explained that he was honoured and proud to start from the first minute against Olympiacos in a game that the Gunners dominated in the first 25 minutes. The youngster added that he was obviously nervous before kick-off as his objective was to impress the manager and the Arsenal fans, something that he did with a well-taken goal.
Andre Santos, on the other hand, did feature against Borussia Dortmund but on Wednesday he also started as a regular as he explained that the second goal was an important one as it was his first European goal at the Emirates Stadium.
The Brazilian went on to be one of the best players on the pitch as he concluded by saying that the Greeks were not shy to attack as they showed a lot of quality and created a lot of chances, especially in the first half of the game.
After the game, the two Arsenal players said:
[Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain] To make my first start in the Champions League obviously I was honoured and proud, even more proud to get the three points with the boys.
It was a massive game for us, to build on the momentum from Saturday. It was a really, really good game and I’m happy with the way it turned out.
There’s always nerves, you want to do as well as you can you, want to impress the fans, the manager and help the boys out, so obviously I was a little bit nervous.
I’ve got a lot of hard work to go, and a lot of improvement on tonight’s performance; there are areas that I’ve already thought I need to improve on. But it’s a good start for me and I’m proud to have scored my first goal in the Champions League.
It’ll be very hard for me to get Theo [Walcott]’s position or anyone else’s but I am up for it.
I have got confidence in my ability to [make an impact this season] and I think one of the main things with me is that I am going to learn by getting more game time.
I know that isn’t going to come easily but over this season, next season and the one after I am just going to build on it and work hard and train.
I am always learning things from the boys in training because they are quality players and that’s it for me. Getting stronger and fitter by playing games is only going to help me.
You are all mates off the pitch but on it you are all competing for places. I think that only makes a healthier squad – more players fighting for positions can only mean everyone has got to step their game up.
[Andre Santos] It was an important goal and I’m very happy, because it was my first [UEFA Champions League] game in front of the supporters, and it’s always good to score and help the team.
I’m very happy with the way I’m adapting. I always hope to score goals and help my team. I hope now I can have a good time in the Arsenal shirt. Olympiacos didn’t come to defend – they really attacked our team.
They showed a lot of quality and created a lot of chances, but we scored twice and finished up with a great victory.
