Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was full of praise for the defensive department after the Gunners secured an important home win, against Olympiacos, on Wednesday.
Speaking to Sky Sports 2, the Poland International confessed that it was a tough game with the players fully aware before the game of how dangerous the Greek side is as he added that the Gunners defensive department did exceptionally well in the second half as they were put under heavy pressure due to midfield mistakes.
On what Arsenal had to do to keep the lead, the 21-year old declared that they had to keep possession for as long as they could adding that they deserved to win the game as they were the better side in the second 45 minutes of the game.
Early goals from summer signings Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Andre Santos made sure of the win with the Gunners now second in Group F with four points, two behind leaders Marseille with the Gunners to face the French side on October 19, away from home.
After the game, Szczesny said:
It was a very tough game. We knew before the game that it was going to be a very tough game. I think you have to give credit to our defence for keeping the result at 2-1 because they did put pressure on us.
It was a great defensive performance in the second half. We did very well. I think we lost the ball too many times in the middle of the park and that created some problems and they looked dangerous on the break.
We won the first half, we were 2-1 up, it was all about keeping the result that way and we managed to do that.
I think we knew what we had to do. We had to keep the ball as long as we can. I thought we looked the better side in the second half and deserved the win.
