Francis Coquelin surprised with derby start, convinced Spurs are not better than Arsenal

The Gunning Hawk - ForumFrancis Coquelin

Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin confessed he was surprised when manager Arsene Wenger decided to utilise him in yesterday’s North London Derby.

Speaking after the game, the 20-year old however explained that once on the pitch his focus was to do well for the team adding that the Gunners started the game well, passed the ball around nicely but should have ended the game with a better result as Harry Redknapp’s men were not a better side, on the day.

The Frenchman continued by saying that it was expected to be under pressure as Tottenham are always dangerous at home but bemoaned first half missed chances by midfielder Gervinho and striker Robin van Persie.

Asked about the second conceded goal, the youngster concluded by saying that it wasn’t an easy shot to block for goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny as it was a well-taken effort and a number of Spurs players blocked the view of the Polish goalkeeper.

After the game, Coquelin told Arsenal Player:

[Surprised to start?] Of course, a little bit surprised but you know, as soon as the manager needs me obviously I have to go on the pitch and give everything for the team, that’s what I tried to do today.

I think we started quite well, moving the ball around, we played a good Tottenham team but I think today we could be better because I don’t think they were better than us.

They were playing at home so they put a lot of pressure on us but I think like I’ve said we moved the ball around, had few chances with Gervinho and Robin [van Persie] so it could have gone our way [then] we conceded and obviously had to chase it.

At one all we put a lot of pressure on them, we could have scored a goal, didn’t happen and after they scored it was obviously hard to come back.

[Their second goal?] Good goal, really good shot, I don’t think Wojciech can see the ball because there is a lot of players from Tottenham but you know, it’s football, we have to move on and win the next game.

Fair enough, that. The thing is that even if you don’t think we did everything right in the summer or don’t really trust the new signings, it is still far too early to judge the team as a failure.
It would have helped us massively if we had easier fixtures during this difficult period (and everyone might have been feeling positive despite nothing having changed) but at least we’re getting the tough ones out of the way.

As I see it the performances are improving. Our passing and movement no long looks as disjointed. There are few misplaced passes now and then but we were actually able to keep the ball for long periods and push the other team back which we haven’t been able to do for a while.
The defensive side still looks a bit incoherent though. Its not just a matter of the quality of the back four, but rather the team working together to close down and mark up. And its not an issue of coaching or effort by the players either. It is simply that this is a new team and it will take some time for them to get the defensive positioning right. There are still some misunderstandings and hesitations in defending which allow the opponents just a little more time than we can afford.

Very impressed with Coquelin in both the Spurs and Shrewsbury matches. I think he’s not just slightly, but very much better than Frimpong at the moment. Which really is the difference between a full seasons loan and a full season on the sidelines injured.

So many of our players seem to lose form after one injury or another. Djourou, Na$ri and Walcott are examples of last seasons players who dipped after injury. I think Ramsey is still in that below par performance area at the moment. He has patches during a game where he is brilliant but then will make very basic areas that concede possession.

Maybe on TVs return, Coquelin can keep his place alongside Song with Arteta behind RVP. Or maybe leave Song at the back with TV and leave Mertesacker at home. I never thought he was the defender for us before we signed him and can’t see anything to change my opinion. Much in the same way that Brede Hangeland was never for us.

Hopefully Wenger can help our problems by buying Cahill.. or solve them by buying Hummels! And Hazard! And either Gotze or Eriksen! And sell Arshavin, Walcott (to a foreign team), Squillaci and Chamakh!

    Oh, I can but dream!

Well they did actually look better than us or at least more of a threat and not only did they win they could’ve won by much more. Things need to change at Arsenal and lets start with the mentality of the team, these kids need to learn that they are playing in the premiere league for Arsenal. They don’t have a right to just turn up and have an easy day they have to give it their all always every second of the game and more. I’ve seen little ones on the park play with more determination, commitment and passion.

I’ve been avoiding blogs for the past couple of days because frankly I’m sick of the doom and gloom ‘Wenger out’ crap.
It’s nice to see there are some fans out there with the same view as me. We can turn this season around. Considering the kind of players we’re missing from injury and the fact that we never have the same 11 playing in any kind of consistent way we’re not doing too badly at the moment although I’d prefer wins.
Sagna is a huge loss though and I’d rather see Santos play RB than Jenkinson who has bags of potential but needs a loan season to be blooded.
Look I know we lost through sheer bad luck in this one. Maybe Sagna could have done better to deny VDV the chance but the ref got two decisions wrong in that piece of play. The other goal was one chezzer would normally have saved and we were not outplayed even though our team was very makeshift, in fact we defended quite well at times and we did well in the midfield too which we haven’t really been doing this season.
All I want is for the team to still be in the Champions league and in a position to fight for a champions league spot in the league by January. I think we should relegate the FA cup and Carling cup to games our reserve team play.
I’d much prefer Benayoun played instead of Ramsey. I think Arteta and Benny should be our two first choice midfielders because Ramsey has been doing a Denilson on us all season. He plays with too much fear and no endeavour anymore. I remember a player who before his injury was audacious, took risks, pulled off impossible little feats of skill, took on other midfielders, defenders and wasn’t afraid to run at people and get forward.
Wenger should have to tried to stop all our players going international and just spent the next two weeks drilling players in the attack to defence switch and vice versa.
Above all this is time we fans should up and support our team, we’re in the race now, we can’t buy new players and changing manager is not going to happen nor should it. We have to do everything possible to show our support and lift our team, because hopefully this is just a reverse of usual end of season fade and we can just keep growing stronger.
