Injured Bacary Sagna convinced Carl Jenkinson will be an adequate replacement

The Gunning Hawk - ForumBacary Sagna

Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna believes that 19-year old Carl Jenkinson will soon show that he will become one of the best defenders in the squad.

The Frenchman underwent surgery this week and is expected to be ruled out for at least three months with the former Charlton Athletic man set to take over on the right wing.

And asked whether the youngster is good enough to replace him, Sagna replied on his Twitter account that Jenkinson is very talented, will do his job properly and will soon be “one of the best defenders”.

Considered by many as one of the strongest right backs in the world, the 28-year old suffered a broken leg in the final part of last week’s North London Derby that the Gunners lost by two goals to one.

In the summer, manager Arsene Wenger decided to let Emmanuel Eboue leave the Club for Galatasaray after he signed Carl Jenkinson from Charlton Athletic with the youngster already featuring in important games such as against Manchester United and Liverpool but yet to fully convince.

If Sagna suffers no setbacks during his recovery, he should be available for the January 21 game at the Emirates Stadium against Manchester United.

The Gunners should however welcome back Thomas Vermaelen, Abou Diaby and Laurent Koscielny after the International break, in time to face Sunderland on October 16, at the Emirates.

    I’d rather have Koscielny

I’m not convinced, I’m a fan of putting Coquelin in there. Still, good to see Bacary offering his support to Carl and I hope he performs as well as we know he can

`Wales on Line` reports “Arron Ramsey is about to ease Arsenal`s pain”. Is he leaving?

  • Kaysupa says:

Jekinson may be good but for God’s sake let conquelin play right back now. Conquelin is more mature than Jekinson at this stage judging by his performance against tottenham hotspur.

Whilst I respect the views of the above I am also staggered by the negative remarks about young Jenkinson…..As an ‘OLD’ Gunner I would like to state that I personally do not rate Sagna any higher that Eboue because (A) He has been ‘missing’ for many of the goals against this year and last….the worst was the firts hand ball goal last week! (B) Secondly he cannot cross a ball even when he has no one to block it….as a pro he should be disgusted with his pathetic attempts to get a centre near his team mates..(C) Recently he he has shown very little awareness of danger during the oppositions break aways..which many a time have started when he has miss crossed or lost the ball…his passing too has become wayward.

On the other hand I watched Jenkinson carefully in all the games he played and realised that this lad has fight and guts and skill. He never gives up, even when isolated by so called experienced teamates. He has made a couple of goals already and it wont be long before he scores. Defensively I think he is an improvement on Sagan (a) because of hi speed and (B) because of hi height.

So give him a break and remember what has gone before him !!! Watch him grow into a great right back when Vermy & Kossy and Per are beside him!

I also like Coquelin a lot and would play him beside Song anyway….Frimpong should also be a regular squad man as he is going to be a star too. All that leaves is our real problem ie; up front. I see a major hole in our forward line..ie; we need a great goal scorer that frightens the opposition…..RVP does not. He is respected as a great player but if he had a Benzema or Suarez beside him with OAC and Walcott around even he would score more.

Finally, I think there is a major issue that no one is mentioning….our lack of offensive system for free kicks…corners and throwins??? Against all opposition this season and for 5 seasons back, we have had no plan B for corners we appear to just lob (via RVP) a ball somehwere in the direction of the area. We have no movement at throwins (just notice how many end up with the opposition! As for freekicks well, RVP into the crowd and thats it. Has no one at AFC any innovation at all? Just look at the Olympiarkos corners..brilliant! Also their free kicks…and check out the throwins…hardly lost the ball once?

So in a nutshell…apart from team selection cockups…Arsene is failing to see that most of our tactics are lazy and doomed to end in losing the ball…and usually when most of our team are upfield…….HOW MANY GOALS WOULD MANURE HAVE TO SCORE BEFORE AW DECIDED TO ACTUALLY DEFEND!!!!

  • GunnerEye says:

Jenkinson is slow ! He will make some deadly mistake from our right side ,He leave too much space for right wing to run down when he was moving forward !

  • Bouba says:

We have no potable replacement or back up for Sagna ( Wenger stupid management skills involve again ).

I would play Santos even if he is a LB… Because we all know that Djourou will fill the position when he gets back and we don’t want that…!!

  • Matt says:

My nan could do a better job at right back

  • Hunter says:

I hope this means Coqueline steps in. I’m sorry but Jenkinson is dreadful. More of Arsene’s fantasy managing thinking a bit part League 1 player is ready for the highest level.

I am totally baffled as to why we sold Eboue. He was a great utility player and could fill in numerous places. Jenkinson can’t do any of that.
