Arsenal team news: Laurent Koscielny, Johan Djourou and Squillaci back for Sunderland

The Gunning Hawk - ForumJohan Djourou

Arsenal have confirmed that defenders Laurent Koscielny, Johan Djourou and Sebastien Squillaci will all be back for Sunday’s home game, against Sunderland, in the English Premier League.

This will be a massive boost for manager Arsene Wenger who will be in a position to possibly rest Germany International Per Mertesacker and to also move Cameroon’s Alex Song back to his natural position as defensive midfielder although to be said is that the 24-year old was exceptional in the Arsenal defensive department.

Unfortunately, the Gunners will however not be able to use Belgium’s Thomas Vermaelen who, according to the Arsenal boss, needs “one or two more weeks” before making his long-awaited comeback with the 25-year old to certainly feature against Chelsea, away from home, on October 29.

Also out injured are right-back Bacary Sagna who will be out on the sidelines for approximately three months after undergoing surgery on a fractured fibula in his right ankle and midfielders Abou Diaby and Jack Wilshere, with the Englishman not back before January 2012.

Arsenal are currently 15th in the English Premier League table and cannot afford to drop any more points if they want to challenge for a Top Four finish.

On Sunday, the Gunners will host Nicklas Bendtner’s Sunderland for the day’s early kick-off and will then travel to France for their key Champions League game against Olympique Marseille, away from home.

  • MarkNZ says:

Any thoughts on Djourou instead of Jenkinson at RB?

    • davi says:

he’s not looked good there recently, or anywhere for that matter.

    • LFS GUNNER says:

not thoughts, facts. He was a disaster against Blackburn. Bale would’ve destroy him, thankfully he wasn’t there. Maybe Koscielny, how about Coquelin?

      • svevo says:

Out of the names mentioned here, only Jenkinson is a natural RB.

I just don’t see the point in playing a player out of position.

Having said that though, why not Frimpong at RB?

      • Mark says:

I think Coquelin is the best choice. Jenkinson is not experienced or athletic enough to play regular minutes for the team. He’s barely an adequate option for a match here and there, but long term no way. Coquelin at least has shown the poise and ability to play at this level and although RB might not be his natural position I find it hard to believe that professionals cannot adapt and play more than one position.

That or try Santos or Gibbs there. If Wenger would play the right footed Eboue at LB in the past why not play a left footed Gibbs or Santos at RB? Left footed players play right mid and right foot players play left mid so why not a left footed RB? You would hope at this level players are able to use both feet (though obviously it’s shocking how many will not use their weak foot to dribble, pass, shoot, cross and even some receive the ball).

        • LFS GUNNER says:

you’re right, if I’m not mistaken Sagna played LB against Udinese.

The problem using Santos/Gibbs at RB is that we won’t have any replacements if any one (Gibbs) gets injured. I’d stay with Santos/Gibbs at LB and Coquelin/Jenkinson at RB.

Coquelin even with his little experience, is way more experienced than Jenks.

    • paris86 says:

He’s not better than Jenkinson in defending at RB, not faster and definetly not even close to Carl’s crossing quality level.

  • mick says:

Get ready for Bendther to make his “Arrogant” comments in the headlines..

  • ieuan says:

i actually dont believe a team can get weaker by players coming back from injuries well guess what thats another achievement for aw to put in his dust trophie case

  • Aussie Jack says:

So, the back four could be Jenkinson, Koscieiny, Djourou and Santos.? That`s a massive boost indeed.

  • Shafiu says:

Welcome back Laurent my best depender is back, it’s time to start celebrating.
Why some of us don’t want try jerkinson let try him and see his best.

  • rvp15 says:

Djourrou is too weak, not physically strong enough for the epl.

Kos back is great news, will free up Song to go back to midfield. That will make a big difference.

    • LFS GUNNER says:

I’d say he’s not mentally strong, sometimes he performs like a kid.

I mean, imagine Djorou’s physique with Lucio’s attitude… that’ll work and I wouln’t want to mess with him, the truth: Johan is too soft.

      KOS is back! :)

  • locha says:

Koscieleny return is good news to the team, Johan Jourou has to put more effort as he can perform much better. Squillaci is only there to fill up the formal number of a football squad

  • chris from Cambridge says:

Let’s hope Wenger gives Djourou a run in the reserves till about …… April.

  • Tim says:

I disagree with all of you. Djourou should be given a start, where he can improve, as only games will give a player experience and hopefully talent. We saw against Udinese, he was quickly called up and had an impact (unfortunately got injured). Also we saw from last season the impact he can have when he gets playing time.

    COME ON DJOUROU!
