Arsenal midfielder Andrey Arshavin confessed that there is still room for improvement in his game as he fully understands the frustration of the fans.
Speaking to Arsenal Player, the Russia International started by revealing that football, on television, was not a frequent option when he was a child as the only tournaments available to watch were the Russian League, the European Championships and the World Cup Finals.
Growing up, the Italian Serie A and the Spanish Liga were available with the Russian confessing a year ago that he was a Barcelona fan, as a kid.
On what fans should expect from him this season, the 30-year old was honest enough to admit that he’s still expecting “more” from his performances as he added that it is normal for fans to be disappointed when the players don’t deliver on the pitch.
And on the four goals scored at Anfield on April 21, 2009, Arshavin concluded by saying that his focus is on the present and that he will only think about this once-in-a-lifetime achievement when he will be older and when maybe he will be featured in one of the Club’s history books.
On the fans and the Anfield game, Arshavin said:
I did not have really a lot of chances to watch a lot football up to 13-15 years because we had only Russian TV and we could only see Russian League, World Cup and the European Cup, that’s it.
But since [then], everything changes, I watched a lot of Spanish football, Serie A as well because at that moment, I think, Italian League was the best League.
[Childhood heroes?] I liked some players but it wasn’t as if they were my idols and it still is like this, to have idols is no good for anybody, not just in football but in life as well, you have to be yourself.
It’s very important for everyone [to enjoy the game] because when you do, you do it better as well, the fans can see it and they enjoy themselves as well.
[The fans] need results. They don’t care, they are ready to be patient for 30 games if you win by one-nil but if you lose three games in a row they will be unhappy, it’s normal.
They should expect more from me, they should expect some more tricks, goals and unbelievable passes. To be honest I am still expecting more from me as well. But believe me, I do everything I can do.
I just have to give everything I can at the moment, just on the pitch. I want to score more goals and bring my team to the title.
[The 4-4 Liverpool game?] Maybe in 50 years Arsenal will publish a book and I will see my name somewhere [and] at that moment I will remember what I’ve done at Anfield.
