Arsene Wenger: We have a big squad available and there is plenty of optimism

The Gunning Hawk - ForumArsene Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes it’s time for his players to turn positive performances into positive results.

Speaking to Arsenal Player ahead of Sunday’s Premier League game against Sunderland, the Frenchman started by revisiting the defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, a game in which the Gunners made terrible defensive mistakes and lost by two goals to one.

Believing that they were punished for failing to deal with “details”, the Arsenal boss did however explain that the basis inside the team is very good, that the Gunners are improving in respect to quality and that the attitude of the players – as always – is very good.

On getting six points in their next two Premier League games, Wenger concluded by confirming that Sunderland and Stoke City at home are must-win games as it’s time for the Gunners to deliver on the pitch and turn optimism into points.

On Friday, the manager said:

[If we needed the international break?] I would have loved to play three days later because we felt that the quality of our performance was there but the outcome was very frustrating.

Somewhere I felt that we punished ourselves, we were not beaten on the day by a bad performance but just because the details that you have to deal with in the big games were not on our side.

That was very frustrating. Ideally, the disappointment was big and I would have loved to play quickly again but maybe to get the game out of the mind of the players it’s better they go for an international game.

I feel that the basis inside the team is very good, that the quality of our game is improving from game to game [and] that the attitude of the players is very good.

But now it’s time to transform all that into positive results knowing that to win or to lose is not a coincidence.

It’s down to concrete facts and this concrete facts at the moment, I feel, are details and not really basic quality.

[Six points against Sunderland and Stoke?] Yes, that of course is a big target for us, we want to achieve that and in between we have as well the Champions League game.

We have a big squad available so there is plenty of optimism around the team and we want to transform that into points.

If you had the 1st choice 11 last season all fit pitted against our 1st choice 11 this season then yes you’re totally right, we are weaker this season. However I think squad wise you’d have to say we are stronger. We certainly have a better back 4 than last season, Kosielny is established now, Vermaelen should now be available, and of course Mertsaker, Szczesny is no longer a hot prospect but is getting really established. We obviously need Wilshere back because he was our best player last season. Arteta and Gervinho are basic replacements for Cesc and Nasri and they are certainly not as good, nowhere near, but they are both good players. But we now have additions like Chamberlain, Ryo, Song, that overall make the squad much deeper than the threadbare one of last season.

“plenty of optimism around the team and we want to transform that into profits” (points)

    Sorry, it`s my aging eyes.

  • Jekyll says:

A big squad where the back up right back is a 19 year old from div 2.

The problem is Wenger thinks the problem is ‘details’ and not fundamentals. We need a fundamental change in the way the team plays the game – more emphasis on defensive discipline, not such a high line, stop pretending we’re Barcelona because we don’t have the players, start working on winning the ball back when we don’t have it.

He still thinks he just needs to use the same methods ‘better’, he keeps diving deeper and deeper into the same failed philosophy. This is who the man is, it worked when he had great players years ago, he doesn’t anymore and he’s not the man for AFC 2011.

    • Gunnerrob says:

With Vermaelen coming back from injury we have Mertsaker and Vermaelen in the centre and Kosielny at right back a position he’s more than used to.

      • Hunter says:

I’ll believe Vermaelen is coming back when he is actually on the pitch during a competitive match. There is so much lying going on at the club that you can never trust what they say about when a player should be back in action.

  • sam says:

yes he’s right that we have stronger squad than last season but we are lacking a winning formula and most of the time he makes wrong decisions selecting first team starters.
we replaced squillaci with mertersacker, denilson with coquelin, clichy with santos, nasri with alex chamberlain. we are only missing cesc.
in my opinion he still have to remove certain individuals from the starting line up even better if he sells them ie djourou, chamakh, arshavin and rosicky. maybe djourou can switch role perhaps play him in midfield/right back or whatever he wants to transform him to give him last chance.
also, fans haven’t been fair on jenkinson. although he’s a work in progress no one actually realised that he’s one of our best crosser of the ball, he already have 2 assists this season. selling eboue was the right thing to do the only mistake was selling havard nordveit instead.still he deserves his chance if things don’t work out personally i prefer coquelin to play right back while sagna is recovering as jenkinson still learning. wenger shouldnt gamble on him against the likes of chelsea

    • Hunter says:

You can’t remove a world class midfield player like Fabregas and claim to be stronger. I’m not sure who in their rigght mind believes this type of garbage. We lost 2 players who are better than the players we brought in. That equals a weaker squad. Since we have yet to see anything from Park you can’t really count him as anything other than making up the numbers. Same with Ryo.

      • Gunnerrob says:

I know it’s hard to take, but most Arsenal fans have a contrary opinion to your extreme views. If they didn’t the emirates would be empty. Don’t get me wrong there’s always room for minority views, just so you’re in no doubt though, most Arsenal fans still love the players and respect the manager unlike you.

  • James says:

“we were not beaten on the day by a bad performance but just because the details that you have to deal with in the big games were not on our side”

Still living in a dreamworld I see. The man’s clueless. As great as he once was, he is now the complete opposite – a one-man disaster zone dragging Arsenal to oblivion.

  • Mohd Shah says:

A big squad and full of optimism. The point for talking is over.

Make sure the gunners win against Sunderland otherwise it will be the

    same old story.

  • Hunter says:

Arsene is still living in fantasy land. What the hell is wrong with him?!

  • Mikster says:

    Stoke is bad news…
At least we have mert to block all of delays throws right?
    :(

  • MuphemeSA says:

Agree with Sam except for the part where he says Coquelin should be played at right back. Personally i would go with Koscielny on that position if I am to be extra courteous, especially once Vermaelen is back.
Otherwise i still think there is too much negativity in many people’s minds. We need to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves up no matter how many times we fall. I am personally happy with the new players that joined the team, they definitely are great quality players. I never expected them to gel on the first, second or third week. I can’t wait for the time Ryo Miyaichi gets opportunities to challenge Arshavin on the left wing. One thing that seems evident, if we are to continue playing the game that we always played, our midfield lacks some magician of sort. #Gooner for life!!!!

  • Pat Rice says:

OK…. I’ll diverge from this article a bit seeing as Wenger doesn’t know what he’s talking about
But three questions to the board with their “perfect” business strategy of running Arsenal FC.

    1. When running a business like a football club, doesn’t silverware get you more profits?
    2. Don’t big name signings get you more profits?
    3. And the most important is doesn’t making your customers(the fans) happy what you want to achieve when running a business?

  • UMOH EKWO says:

This is a very familiar Wenger way. He has never seen the weakness of his squad. If this is the quality squad he has offered us, then there is need for a rethink about him. As far as Am concerned, this squad has more rubbish than quality. Am sorry Gooner fans, that is the way I see it.

    • Gunnerrob says:

Back up your statement and tell us who you rate as rubbish? Seriously I’m interested.

      • Hunter says:

        I can name plenty.

Jenkinson, Djourou, Koscielny, Arshavin, Benayoun, Chamakh…..shall I continue?

        • Gunnerrob says:

          Please do….
