Arsene Wenger’s reply to Bergkamp’s suggestion that van Persie should change position

The Gunning Hawk - ForumArsene Wenger

Earlier this week, Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp told the Daily Mail that Robin van Persie should be utilised in a much deeper role, at Arsenal.

Asked to comment about this during yesterday’s press conference, manager Arsene Wenger explained that the striker is a very versatile player who can play in every position of the pitch, adding that what is important is to pick a formation that suits the team and the qualities of each and every member of the squad.

The Arsenal boss correctly added that van Persie hit 26 goals in 32 games and this should be enough to understand that he is indeed used just where he should be used in his line-up.

But, the Frenchman also added that an open-minded approach is needed in football and that if a player can play in different positions then all the options should be evaluated as in fact van Persie was utilised on the left wing by his former club Feyenoord as a demonstration that he can indeed offer versatile options to the Arsenal offensive department.

On van Persie, Wenger said:

[Dennis Bergkamp believes Robin van Persie is playing in a wrong position?] Of course [I spoke with Robin about his position], it’s on the football pitch.

On the right, on the left, up front, behind the strikers, he can play everywhere, it’s as simple as that.

What is more suited to the team and adjusted to the qualities of the other players, it’s the best.

In this position he has scored 26 goals in 32 games so you cannot say he’s in a bad position because the numbers go against you.

But you have to be open-minded, he can play as well behind the striker or on the right or on the left.

When I bought him he played on the left, winger. At Feyenoord he was educated like that, you know, I put him central because he’s a quality player.

Maybe he should try other wingers upfront too { Walcot & AOC} to see who can help RVP share d burden

  • crispy says:

Opinions Opinions Opinions… Heres mine, as an Arsenal fan the one thing that pains me is the tactics playing this 4-5-1 clearly dosent work,
It seems the only one that believes in it is AW the fans want a change in tactics we dont have the quality of players that we use to have anymore, the sad thing is Arsenal have gone from this free flowing, xciting attacking football to slow boring nagative football over the last couple of seasons, and it seems that things arnt gonna change . OMG what a long miserable season we have ahead :-( (

  • Aussie Jack says:

I`m sure Dennis was not questioning RVP`s versatility just that it might be more productive for the team if he played behind the main striker. His scoring rate of 26 in 32 matches is impressive but what was the teams scoring rate over these 32 matches and what was his percentage contribution? If he could score only 15 as a second striker and the front man popped in 20 would that not be more impressive from a team point of view. We need a fox in the box.

    • gooner11 says:

unfortunately Park Chu Young is not foxy enough it seems..

  • wengers straightjacket says:

agree entirely with bergkamp…….it would probably mean him scoring sligtly fewer, but with a top striker alongside him, he would provide many assists. For example playing falcao upfront with robin off him would produce 50 goals a season or more from both. When robin has his back to goal youcan see his limitations..he is not a lone target striker…he is just so good that he makes up for those limitations. Our only truly world class player!

    • Chris says:

      No.

I 9/10 disagree with Arsene but on this, he’s right, the numbers show that Robin is playing just where he has to play. Granted, maybe you can blame Arsene for not replacing Cesc adequately but you cannot blame him for using Robin as a striker.

    • boswell says:

Yeah well you can’t play Falcoa upfront with him as he doesn’t play for us. Think about the squad we have and not the one you want.

  • alex says:

I see RvP as a similar player to Francesco Totti in some ways. Totti has been successful as a lone striker but has played his best football as a trequarista. We know RvP can play as a lone striker, but I think he’d be better in a trequarisa type role.
Considering how lackluster our central midfield looks without Jack, we could do worse than trying something along those lines with Park or even Walcott in front.
    Just my two cents.

    • sort of says:

Technically, RvP is excellent. But he’s no DB10 as a player. He’s got neither the vision nor the facility of quick passing of DB or Cesc in the build up to counter attacks. He’d be fine as a trequartista, but not equal to Totti, or DB10 in those roles. But AW is not going to say this, is he. Just like he isn’t going to say that Arshavin doesn’t have the work rate to play centrally, either, which we all know now, which AW knew a long time ago.

  • Gooner4life&beyond says:

I think I have to disagree with you Chris. Van Persie is a great player and excellent striker, but I can see that it may benefit the team more by having him in a more creative role.

He would still get goals, we can see that, but he would give us more penetration with his skills a bit further down the park where it matters and where we have struggled to get through certain teams. I think Bergkamp is spot on.

Sometimes in football you need a younger, fresher point of view. Bring in Bergkamp as assistant or attacking coach I say. Still need a defensive one though.

  • Jekyll says:

The strange thing about Wenger’s comment is the formation is not ‘adjusted to the qualities of the players’ but is a formation that was designed to get the best out of Fabregas. He is still persisting with it and you can see in the way the team is playing that it’s costing us dear.

  • Gooner4life&beyond says:

You are right about not replacing Cesc though, Arteta is very good, but we needed him and someone else to play together. Ramsey is not the answer.

  • Siphiwe says:

    Yes Wenger, numbers do count.
Park Chu Young, 7 goals in 4 games but he cannot even get a match?!

Be clever and put Park up front and RVP behind him.

  • jyhmin says:

Berkamp is suggesting this so taht arsene will buy a real striker..
we need a top class striker bsides Van Persie.

  • ola says:

I think RVP should play behind another striker, a perfect example is the combination of Rooney and Hernandez of MUTD, RVP can get goals in any position upfront he soes it for the national team behind Huntelaar. This option Should be tried by AW i believe it will work

  • Olumide says:

I agree with bergkamp. It’s just that it’ll harden wenger’s heart even if he was thinking of doing it. He just like to prove everybody wrong. The fact that none of former players(except rice) is working with arsenal’s 1st team shows that wenger is d obstacle 2 it. Bergkamp said in that interview dt he has not sold his house in london & he would still like to work with a team in london. We know d team he’s talking about. I know if he was contacted, he wouldn’t hesitate a bit neither do I think we offered vieira a job b4 he went 2 city.

  • bluemoon says:

AW didn’t think to change RVP position because if he changes that show he is wrong. But AW should answer the media same why he brings Mr Park from Monaco to our team and not use him because he can play in every positions upfront much more than Ramsy. Second question that he should press to the media is he concern the team win or Aw passing style even it doesn’t work at this time.

  • Jack Mo says:

Wenger has become so stupid to understand the basics, Bergkamp poited it out correctly, he knows perfectly well the scoring form of Van Persie he he said clearly that he would be better of in his(Bergkamps) role which was also central, Mr Wenger, so he can help other players to also score.

How will 26 goals in 32 games by one man help any team if no one else is scoring damn it?!

Bergkamp was suggesting a change in formation and Wenger knows it but he won’t do it because he is the one who thinks stubbornness is the way out.

Wenger is so good that he is capable of changing our season and making us Premier League winners by a huge margin, but he won’t do it because it will mean reversing his plans and tactics meaning he will have rlistened to a voice of reason and that hurts him.

We all get furious with Bendtner, but when did he ever play with Van Persie upfront in a 4-4-2 position and we failed to score?, why the hell was he being played on the wing?. Theo Walcott tends to gravitate towars the centre to combine with Van Persie with devastating effect showing clearly that he should be partnering him up front instead of being burdened with wing play, after all he is not such a good wing player, he has poor crossing ability and not very useful defensively, so why insist playing him on the wing?

Why does Wenger play players out of position all the time and he repeats it over and over agains despite it having disastrous effect?, Yes he turned Thierry Henry but everyone is not Thierry Henry, and after all, Henry still maintained playing his was from the left.
