Top result, Arsenal looked clearly like the better side against Marseille

Written by Jeff Patterson on October 20, 2011 – 19:30

The Gunning Hawk - ForumStade Vélodrome, Olympique de Marseille

Great result yesterday in France. There is no other way to say it, Arsenal are climbing back into form and starting to reclaim some winning ways.

Yesterday’s improbably victory in Marseille means that the Gunners have taken 5 victories from their last six games, with only the let down at White Hart Lane keeping Arsenal from a perfect record in their last 6 matches. Not too bad.

Emirates is starting to look like a fortress again, Liverpool marks the only defeat we have suffered at home so far. And yesterday, Arsenal looked clearly like the better side against Marseille, who several pundits predicted (wished) would beat our squad easily.

Laurent Koscielny did wonderful in his club return to French soil, and I have to admit that Carl Jenkinson and Andre Santos were not half bad. I thought Jenkinson especially did well, Andre Ayew is one of the top wingers in the French league, but he certainly didn’t look the part yesterday.

The biggest concern I have is still the attack, where we struggle to do much of anything. We dominated OM in the midfield, but that really didn’t lead to meaningful attacks the way it should have, the way it used to. Small steps, to be sure, because defensively, and in the midfield, Arsenal look much improved.

As I said above, Arsenal were a class apart in midfield, and Marseille really struggled to impact the game. Unfortunately, Arsenal struggled to really challenge Steve Mandanda, who handled most of Arsenal’s attempts without much trouble.

Robin van Persie suffered from being left alone up front, and often times Arsenal’s moves forward were stopped when support was just too slow in arriving.

It’s frustrating to have to keep beating the same drum week after week, but I really think Arsene must consider putting a second forward up with Van Persie. Whether it’s Walcott, Gervinho, Chamakh, Park… someone who Robin can link up with, and who can make those penetrating runs that the Dutchman doesn’t have the legs for. Robin may be a magician, but he’s no sprinter, and Wenger should stop asking him to be one.

I found Song and Rosicky very capable in the midfield, but I’m afraid I just can’t be convinced by Mikel Arteta. He is struggling to make his mark on games, and his decision-making just isn’t quick enough to ask him to be the deep-lying playmaker we had in Cesc, and are hoping for in Wilshere and Ramsey.

I love the calming presence he seems to have, and he is a savvy Premier League veteran to be sure, but I am worried about his ability to flourish in this offensive system. Hopefully, it’s just growing pains, and once he adapts, he will be a force to be reckoned with.

Looking at the weekend, we have Stoke, always a tough match. They have their own European nights to enjoy now, and common sense suggests they are less equipped to deal with the added pressure and games than we are. Three points there, and I will finally start to believe all that “turning the corner” has begun!

I have to disagree i thought arteta was amazing his job was to protect the back 4 and as the whole game showed he did it pretty well, Plus he isnt Cesc Wilshere can take his role and take it to another level as he is a better dribbler than cesc
I think we are impotent in the attacking area because we have to midfielder who can drive from the middle ie diaby or wilshere

Arshavin is more than capable but out of form ramseys more if a player who dictates from the back

    Great Win though

    • Manu says:

song protects the back four, arteta is supposed to link midfield to attack, a box to box midfielder if you will, and unfortunately he didn’t do that very efficiently.

  • GunnerPete says:

Good article. I really think someone has to explain the ommision of AOC & Park ? I really believe that if AOC had played in Arsharvins place we would have won by a larger margin. As for Park, what is the point? Bought for Carling Cup?

My Ratings: Chesney 6.5 nothing to do.

    Jenkinson 7…..Per 7….Kossy 8…..Santos 7.

    Song 7…Arteta 6.5…Walcott…6..Rosicky 7….Arsharvin 5.(again)

    RVP 7.

    • sam says:

i have been thinking about this too,
maybe wenger is being patient with walcott and arshavin by giving them last chance before he officially omit them from the starting line-up.
also van persie praising ryo miyaichi in the press sounds like indirect call to the boss to start playing him without trying to offend his team mates.
maybe we should all be patient, despite the frustration we came home with 3 points

  • Northbanksy says:

Good result away from home for sure, with some fine individual performances.
It does seem that largely we can only do one thing well in any one game..either defend, or attack. When the onus is on not conceding we are short up front & when we go all guns blazing offensively we’re short at the back. Early days though & we are still missing our best defender and best ( & only?) creative midfielder.

  • R Nyambati says:

Great match which achieves to enhance confidence. I think Gervinho made a huge impact, Rambo is proven clinical in front of goal, Rosicky looks to rediscover old form & Jenkson is better than Eboue.

  • Scott (USA) says:

Always nice to get a road win the Champions League. But Marseiile is in 15th place in ligue1 with 1 win in 10 games. Before we start with the “Arsenal is back” would be nice to beat a good team first. Beat a good team and I will be the first to say we are on our way back. Sorry Bolton, Sunderland and Shrewsbury don’t count.

    • LFS GOONER says:

I see your point but Udinese is second in Serie A, beated Atletico Madrid and are top of their group, and we beated them twice without Per, Andre, Mikel, etc. Doesn’t that count?

      • Scott (USA) says:

Udinese counts of course. Couldn’t add them or it would have screwed my whole point.Hehe.

  • RJL says:

first of i would like to say well done to the arsenal team that battled so well for the win against marseille. however i have recently noticed in the past few games that alex song is trying to play the role of cesc fabregas by being the main passer of the ball whereas every arsenal fan must know that he is probably the worst passer of the arsenal midfield

i am not critising song but he must stop trying pick out these fabregas type passes and improve what we all know hes good at using strength to win back the ball

    • Mills says:

I think you will find Song has found some killer passes this season, and has 1 goal and 3 assists (maybe more, but 3 I can think of). Think you are a bit off pal

      • RJL says:

i was merely stating that he keeps trying to make a fabregas style pass and 9 times out of 10 it doesn’t work

  • Scott (USA) says:

Rosicky better than Arteta Jeff ? no nada I think not.

    • SeattleGooner says:

Never said that, they were in different roles.

I will say that, while I see a Rosicky that seems to be getting back on form, Arteta just isn’t bringing the threat I expected from him.

I thought he was adequate in the midfield, but as a playmaker he is too slow with the passing, it’s killing the attack

  • Waleed says:

RvP was left alone up front simply because we adopted a more conservative approach for the match. Wenger said the target was 4 points from the two games against Marsaille so he was happy to play for a draw. The midfield sat deep to negate counter attacks while Arshavin and Walcott stayed high up.

The problem is that we’re playing a slightly different formation now. We’re playing with three forwards, very much a 4-3-3 not a 4-2-3-1. So Walcott and Gervinho stay high up which has affected how we defend and how we attack and the team has had to get used to this system.

If the midfield pushes up and links up with RvP more (as we’ve seen them do in the league) we’ll be much better in attack.

Putting a second forward will not do anything except change how we play. If you put two forwards in the center the wings have to drop deep to compensate defensively. It also creates a problem defensively because you are defending with one less midfielder. So I don’t think 4-4-2 is the ideal system for us. However, Wenger would play it if we had the players. We don’t have the players to play it.

    • Scott (USA) says:

Then whats the point of putting cross after cross into the box like we did the first half to RVP who is isolated with three defenders around him. And headers are not RVP’s strength anyway. If not for the goofy touch by Gervinho we would have not scored against Marseille. A tie would not have been bad but we were fortunate to get 3 points. Sorry but this season Marseille sucks. There is no way around it. I am glad they are in our bracket (I’m not complaining). But great performance? Good enough I guess.

      • sam says:

well this is what i also don’t understand and jenkinson is being blamed for crossing the ball when there isn’t anyone in the box.
when you are running in the wing the least you can do is delay your cross for your team to populate the box but when there is no one at all. its not always the crosser’s fault coz sometimes you cross without even looking hoping the ball to reach anyone.
the question is why arsenal don’t bother running to the box to try to get at least a scrappy goal?

  • MK says:

Arteta gives us a combination of defensive ability and playmaking, no he isn’t Fabregas.. (who else is), but he provides more protection for our back four and alongside Song gives the third central midfielder complete freedom to concentrate on attacking play.

This is the reason I’d suggest why Rosicky has started looking like the player we all know he should be, as he can now concentrate on doing what he does best.

  • summerbreez says:

We are starting from scratch we defended well and controlled the midfield with park and chambrlian we should start scoring we have stoke on sunday will be interesting to see who MR| wenger picks for the match

  • johnli says:

Yes, its a great win. But I would agree with Gunnerpete that nobody can explain why was Oxlade not in Arshavin’s position, and why Parky has been bought just for the carling! The soreline would have been much better looking than just 1-0. Park has been widely exposed – not just to Asian teams but has ernomous experience with formidable European, African as well as South American teams and, can someone tell me in all the many matches he was fielded, how many times he failed to score?? He has good ball control, good speed and can outjump many taller players
to score thru headers. A proven scoring machine, and with Oxlade, we have not one, but two scoring machines!! How about that?? RVP will be more busy – will not be the lone striker without feeds and will certainly score more goals. BUT maybe Wenger can explain why these two proven goal proachers are still not competent enough???

  • Berk Face says:

The Park thing is a mystery

  • Harris says:

Don’t no what you were watchin but yes we’ll take the result that’s all that matters at the end of the day. We are far from looking like a good team, and we haven’t played any body tough at home hence why we haven’t lost. There is no reason to write optical dribble we’re are in a bad patch you can critise the football… doesn’t mean your less of a fan, The club is big enough to get out of this poor form and rebuild a better sructure. Barcelona went through 4-5 nightmares seasons and look at them now. Please stop trying to make us sound good we clearly aren’t but we will be in the future

  • Scott (USA) says:

Agree that the Result was the most important thing at the end of the day. I think when Verm gets back teaming with Mert we should be better in the back. Santos has obvious quality just needs to adapt more to this level. A little more English steel than Brazilian flair in the back. Just a little. Since we are rebuilding it seems I like to see a midfield with Ox and Ryo playing some. Might as well get them in the mix. Walcott and Arshavin should not be in our future.
