Arsene Wenger on Chelsea and the performances of Aaron Ramsey and Koscielny

Written by Jeffrey on October 30, 2011 – 4:30

The Gunning Hawk - ForumArsene Wenger

Arsenal moved closer and closer to the Top Four after an impressive 3-5 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, on Saturday.

Speaking after the game, manager Arsene Wenger was full of praise for his team as he explained that the players knew that they desperately needed all three points from the game and fought hard to achieve their objective even after conceding a late goal in the first half’s stoppage time.

Asked about the fantastic performance of centre back Laurent Koscielny, the Arsenal boss declared that the Frenchman was outstanding in the first 45 minutes adding, however, that the defensive department gave too much space to the Chelsea strikers.

And on Aaron Ramsey, Wenger concluded by saying that people tend to forget how young players like the Welshman, Jack Wilshere and Wojciech Szczęsny are and how it’s therefore normal for them to need time to show how important they can be in his formation.

After the Chelsea win, the manager said:

I was very unhappy [with Chelsea's third goal] but overall I must say I can only praise my team. We didn’t look disappointed on the pitch and we kept going.

We knew that we needed a win here and we kept going to win the game. Overall I feel that they had a good team performance and they have shown great spirit.

When you go 2-1 down just before half time it’s difficult but we came out in the second half with a complete desire to go forward.

In the second half I felt we were much better defensively than in the first half. We gave too many chances away in the first half – it’s certainly down to the fact that Chelsea have a lot going forward.

But we always looked dangerous through the whole game and I hope the team strengthens its belief with a performance like that to focus on getting stronger and stronger.

You know how it is on the bench when you are 4-3 up with two minutes to do – you do not necessarily encourage your team to be crazy.

But this is the brand of our team and our Club. Sometimes you get rewarded for it and sometimes you pay for it.

[Laurent Koscielny] was outstanding. He was the one at the back in the first half who looked strong.

But I felt in the first half we gave them too much room at the back and in midfield and in the second half we got much tighter. We kept being dangerous going forward but we were less in trouble defensively.

[Aaron Ramsey?] What people forget about players like Wojciech, Ramsey and Wilshere are all 19-20 years old.

They are top quality and it is normal that they improve from game to game and from year to year.

am so much concern about our defence, though we won the game against Chelsea but we are not good defensively we conceed so much. If we will win this trophy we must learn not to conceed cos if you don’t conceed you will not loose. Thank you !

  • Habbila says:

Good game.i new it ll always come to this.the problems this team has is late sighning, sighning good player lately cost us vital points.i always new they ll jell with time.Just Gun them down.

  • Giddygun says:

And which team on earth learns ”NOT to concede”, and actually not concede? Baseless comment. Barca, Real, Man u, man city, bayern all concede, mate. However being ‘tighter at the back’ is better said.

  • gunnerforlyfe says:

I think once we get Sagna or even Gibbs back, We will be much more solid at RB. Vermaelan needs to play over Mertsacker when he is 100%. Mertsacker can play well against weaker teams like Stoke, but doesn’t have the pace or aggressiveness to defend top teams like Liverpool, Chelsea, City, MU, and even Tottenham. Kos needs help!!!! Ramsey has been outstanding…he is the creator of most of our attacks. To all of you who said he needs to go out on loan when he struggled in the beginning of the season…what do you have to say for yourselves?????????

    • sam says:

what do you have to say for yourself by not giving credit to our german giraffe?
do you really watch him play? how many times did he get djourou our of jail?
do you really which arsenal defender is the most skilled in organising the defence?
this time last year, squillaci was our number 3 CB now you should be happy we have 3 world class defenders

  • Perk says:

ya, once they have improved, they will move to a bigger club

    • Krazy Glue says:

Im sorry but i dont understand why you have to do that. If you are not a gunner, this site isnt for you. In a bit of time if we progress we will be up there with man utd and city. We just came from a big win from a top 3 team, is it really necessary to put a negative vibe?

    • sam says:

      yawn boring!
probably a bitter chelsea fan, whats the mata? are you that terryfived of arsenal?
the truth is cesc was homesick he had to go home and we didn’t need nasri anymore, he was not good enough for central role and we have better wingers 22 millions for a half a season wonder with less than a year left on his contract. gael who? we have brazilian sharp shooter now.
please learn from now on that we only sell man city players we don’t need so we are not feeder club. we wouldn’t sell them van persie, wilshere, song, vermaelen, czesny but they can have squillaci and chamakh i heard they are looking for number 2 goalie and fabianski for 15 millions won’t be a bad idea.

      • Richie says:

The defence may have been shakey, but not compared to Chelsea’s! Being able to score 5 at the Bridge makes up for many defensive frailties

  • Jacko Brown says:

I really cannot understand why you all continue to talk about Mert being too slow and not good enough. One thing for sure he is better than both Terry and Ferdinand outside the premiership. Since he has arrived the team has looked much better. No team can lose so much experience at one time and not take a time to rebuild. He is no Tony Adams or Martin Keown in terms of his forcefulness but he reads the game and anticipates and does get in the vital tackles. we shipped in lots of goals last year when tv5 was playing too.
