According to midfielder Theo Walcott, Arsenal captain Robin van Persie has been “absolutely sensational” since he became captain in Arsene Wenger’s side.
Speaking before the Chelsea game played on Saturday, the Englishman explained that the Dutchman has improved tremendously this season, in the way he hits free-kicks, with his goals and in his general player as he is finally enjoying an injury-free run and showing that he is one of the best strikers in the English Premier League.
Asked about their excellent relationship on the pitch, the 22-year old confessed that the Dutchman is always his target when he is to deliver a cross from the wing as he is ultimately the only striker in the manager’s formation.
Happy with his own form, Walcott was on target for Arsenal at Stamford Bridge as he scored with a bizarre yet amazing solo effort in the Gunners’ 3-5 win away from home with Arsene Wenger’s men now just three points from the Blues in the table.
On van Persie, Walcott said:
[Robin van Persie] has been absolutely sensational since he took over the armband from Cesc Fabregas. He’s been a great captain for us already.
The free kicks, the goals, his general play, he’s enjoying his football. It’s nice to see him fit, that’s very important to have him fit all season.
I was gutted when that turn and chip didn’t go in [against Sunderland], I was praying for that to go in and I was already celebrating because it would have been the best goal I’ve ever seen.
We want Robin to be firing on all cylinders and he is starting to show the true player he is.
We just seem to know where each other is on the pitch. He is the lone striker so that probably does me a favour as he’s the one to aim for in the box!
He gives me great passes as well and I suppose when you are a striker you know where you want the ball.
When you have someone like him who makes it look so easy up front, it makes my job easier. It comes naturally and we seem to gel.
[My own form?] I’m happy. I’ve been asked to do a lot more defensive work but that is part of the job and it has worked so far because we’ve been getting the results.
The main thing is that the team wins. I like to grab a goal or an assist because that’s what you judge your game on as a winger.
But my general play is fine, my fitness is great and I am looking after myself. It is all paying off and hopefully that can continue.
