Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was delighted after the Gunners kept a clean sheet, on Tuesday night, against Olympique Marseille.
Speaking to Arsenal Player after the game, the Poland International declared that Thomas Vermaelen and Per Mertesacker – playing for the first time together in central defence – did well as according to the goalkeeper both players are quality with the youngster adding that the spirit is very positive and the players are very confident before games.
On the goalless draw against Didier Deschamp’s men, the 21-year old confessed that four points from the two games is a positive result as in the Champions League will always put you in front of tough opposition, like the French side.
Szczesny concluded by admitting that fatigue was a factor after last week’s hard-fought win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, saying that although it is not easy to play so much, at this stage of the season every game is “massive” for the Club.
On Tuesday, the goalkeeper said:
We kept a clean sheet, which is all you can ask for from a back four. I think [Vermaelen and Mertesacker] did well together but I have been training with them for a long time and I see their qualities.
We looked really solid today, so as I said I just hope we can keep it going.
The spirit within the team is very positive and we are very confident going into every single game.
We feel like we have what it takes to win every game and I am sure we can keep it going. I would have preferred a 1-0 win.
But if you told me beforehand that we would get four points from the two games against Marseille and not concede I would have taken it. I’m pleased with the result.
It’s always difficult in the Champions League because you have to play against top, top opponents but I am confident we can keep our form going and get the results to qualify for the next stage.
There were some tired legs but you expect that. It is hard to play a big game every three days. And at the moment, every game for us is massive.
