Carl Jenkinson: Players not thinking too much about a Top Four finish

Written by Renzo on November 9, 2011 – 1:00

The Gunning Hawk - ForumCarl Jenkinson

Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson revealed that the players are not setting any long-term objectives as their primary target is to do well in the next game.

Speaking to Arsenal Player after last Saturday’s 3-0 win against West Bromwich Albion, the 19-year old declared that such an easy win against a good side is something to be proud of as the Gunners continued their remarkable unbeaten run and can start this month’s International break with confidence and optimism.

Asked about the Top Four zone, the right-back did indeed confirm that the players want to be in the top places of the English Premier League table but also that their focus is to stay humble and not get carried away by a set of positive scorelines.

And on keeping yet another clean sheet, Jenkinson concluded by saying that this shows how strong the Arsenal defensive department is, especially now that all the new players have settled down in their respective roles.

After the 3-0 win, the 19-year old said:

[The West Brom win?] Yeah, obviously 3-0 is a great result and it could have been more today.

West Brom is a decent side so to get another win, we’re really happy with that.

And just to keep the run going, we’ve been doing really well lately so I think it was important to make sure we won and we played well again today.

Because obviously going into a two-week break, the last thing you want to do is to get a bad result so obviously, 3-0 is quite a comfortable lead and all the lads are happy.

[Getting in the Top Four?] Yeah, of course we want to be in the Top Four, everyone knows that.

But I don’t think anyone is really thinking about that sort of thing too much at the moment.

I think we’re doing well, we’re on a run and we’re just concentrated on keeping that going and making sure we play well every week, trying not to get carried away too much with where we are in the league.

[The clean sheet?] It’s very important, I was just talking to Benik Afobe, saying that it was another clean sheet and I think that’s important.

Because we’ve had some disappointing scorelines where we’ve conceded quite a few goals especially at the start of the season.

But I think that was because we had new players who came in and players who have left.

Now we’ve got a solid basis of our defence and of our team, in general, and we’re improving in that sense, keeping clean sheets.

Which is the main thing that always gives you a chance to go and win games if you”re not conceding any.

Yup. Don’t think about anything else but winning every game in sight. We have to cause its not just who are on a good run but also teams like Newcastle and Spurs. We have to make sure that we’re there to catch when they fall.

And by the looks of it our young lads have great respect as well as connection among them and they seem to talk to one another all the time. In one of the interviews of Le Coq he was like the other day I was talking to Jack, here Jenko is like the other day I was talking to Afobe, Jack talking about new players like him, Rambo and Gibbs all playing together, sounds like real team spirit to me. In 3years time we’ll have a starting line up which may look like :

    Scez

    Jenko/Yennaris Kos/Bartley Verm/Ignasi Gibbs/Santos

    Wall/The”Ox” Wizard of Oz/Le Coq/Pong/Jack/Rambo/Aneke/Song Ryo/Gervinho

    RvP/Please some one good

    Afobe/Some one better

i like this lad…he is an arsenal fan/supporter and now he carries that spirit into the team.
I believe he can become a consistent solid performer for us…he trains harder than anyone at the club (apparently)…and is at the best club for his development

  • Goonerbeall says:

Yeah, thanks koddo. I like your honesty and down to earth kind of personality.
Continue to 2get on with it” style everything will follow. I can see why Wenger
brought you in the team. The fighting spirit and learning so fast considering
where you came from. Thats the way to go son. All the best.

Come on Jenkinson you’re getting better with every game, but still need to work harder

This level-headedness is a breath of fresh air. I will be very happy if he becomes our first choice RB for many years to come. BTW what exactly is his nationality? Can he play for England?
