Mikel Arteta on why Arsenal signed him, says Fabregas is a legend

The Gunning Hawk - ForumMikel Arteta

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta revealed that the Gunners wanted to sign him because of his experience and creativity as well because they needed someone who already featured in the English Premier League.

Speaking to The Independent, the Spaniard admitted that he knew that he would have been under pressure to deliver in North London adding that it was a turbulent summer for the Gunners after the departure of key players like Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri and the arrival of nine new players.

On the former captain, 29-year old explained that the players knew that they had to change their style as he praised the Barcelona midfielder, describing him as a legend and one of the best midfielders of the game.

And on the days as a trainee with the Spanish giants, Arteta concluded by saying that the Catalans prepare you not only for the game of football but also as a man as he praised the likes of Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez and Carles Puyol.

On the Gunners and Barcelona, Arteta said:

[Arsenal] made it clear they wanted me because they needed an experienced, creative midfielder. Someone who could fit in quickly in the Premiership.

For me it was the chance to stay in England, move to London, try a bigger club.

And a club that wants to play football all the time. I am from the Barcelona school and the football here is the most similar.

I knew there was going to be pressure. With some of those players leaving and others coming in there will always be a discussion about who is better.

But at the same time I thought I will have the chance to help the team and improve it.

Obviously two of the best players have gone and it is different. We cannot try to be the same as them, that would be a big mistake.

[Cesc] Fabregas was here for eight years. He is a legend, one of the best midfielders I have played against. Trying to compare yourself with them is never going to work.

It is impossible from day one. So just try to play your own game, improve the team and try to fill those holes.

[Barcelona] prepare you as a person and as a footballer. The way they do it is really interesting. You see it in the characters as well.

Talk about Iniesta, Xavi, [Carles] Puyol – nice people. Great players but very, very respectful people. For me the best thing to learn from is an example.

We had [Pep] Guardiola, [Guillermo] Amor, [Jose] Bakero and when you see these examples you want to be like them.

All the young lads now are going to have Iniesta and Xavi as examples and now Thiago [Alcantara] is coming. The ball keeps rolling. It is such a clever method.

    RESPECT????

These guys you mentioned showed absolutely no respect to Arsenal in tapping up Cesc for many years. On the days the accademy was teaching respect, I think these guys were absent!!

The tapping up by those players was a club instruction not the players own ideas. Evra tried it on Nasri for Man U, when the club hadn’t shown any interest.Lampard did it on Cole,Etoo did it on Henry and they got rid of him.Clubs can’t tap players up so they get players who are close to the target to do it. Fortunately RVP is not very close to many players outside Arsenal hence none has tried though Cesc has hinted.

Mikel Arteta is a perfect example of a footballer whose type English fans by and large and definitely the English media don’t really understand.

He is a TEAM player, who has the individual technical quality and tactical game knowledge to adopt any one of 4 midfield berths.

He has played pretty much every minute of every match since he was brought to club, has fitted in to the culture and quietly gone about his business. The style of football is actually very close to his grounding as he describes his formative years in La Masia.

His brief is to monitor the gaps in the play whether offensively in linking the defence to Gervinho, Aaron or Theo or defensively in compressing the space between midfield and the defence especially when Song goes marauding forward.

What is very interesting to see is his ability in helping close out games. He is superior to Fabregas in that respect, as he has greater experience and ability in positional terms. When Fabregas adds that to his incredible offensive armoury, he will be right up there with the best players in the world.

Great credit should go to all of the summer recruits who have each contributed to the team regrouping and slowly learning not to get too caught up in the drama of the match. Gradually the quality of passing and movement is starting to return to its previous levels, and despite the odd wobble we are looking pretty solid.

What is being demonstrated by Chelski’s troubles at the moment is that it is extremely difficult to play exciting, pass and move offensive football and be extremely tight at the back. They are playing like we did 3 seasons ago, looking dangerous while attacking, but the high line being totally unsuited to their much-vaunted £50m back line.

Arteta is a high-quality intelligent footballer who has already added much to our team. Really looking forward to Dortmund on Wednesday should be a cracking game with so much riding on it and their win against Bayern away.

Respect?? They have been talking down Wenger and Arsenal for years trying to convince Cesc to leave.

And all they do is dive all over the place they certainly dont have any respect for the rules of the game.

  • Udeme Bassey says:

Yes Arteta is really trying he will soon even be better than Cesc Fabregas, he just need wilshere to be back so dat he and wilshere will work like Xavi and Iniesta

    • Zimgunner says:

  • herbertgooner says:

  • Essien Isaac says:

Even during his everton days, i have always loved arteta as a person and as a player! I just love his looks and attitude on and off the pitch. Hes never touchy, never grumpy, even when fouled, i mean hes just great!
