It is impossible to look back at yesterday’s win without praising midfielder Alex Song, the man of the match according to many.
The Cameroon International was simply phenomenal in the second half of the game and was the architect of Arsenal’s first goal as he danced his way past the Borussia Dortmund defensive department before delivering the perfect cross for Robin van Persie with the striker making no mistake in front of goal as he scored the first of his two goals.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, manager Arsene Wenger was full of praise for both players as he described Song’s performance as exceptional, one who helped the Gunners take control of the midfield in the second half.
On the Dutch maestro, Wenger concluded by saying that he is always in the right place at the right moment adding that it is mighty important for the 28-year old to stay fit as he is indeed one of the most important players of his squad.
After the 2-1 win, the manager said:
[Alex Song's performance?] I agree with you completely that Song was exceptional for a defensive midfielder with the first goal.
I am pleased for him because we had quite a difficult start in midfield in the first half and we took over in the second half.
[The Robin van Persie brace?] He is in a period where of course he doesn’t have to look for goals – they just come naturally for him.
He is always in the right place at the right moment and he got two goals again tonight from positions that look easy but they are not. He just understands the game so well.
[The threat of injury to van Persie?] At the moment I believe that Robin is an exceptional player.
He takes advantage of our offensive style from the wings. We create a lot of chances but I don’t deny that at the moment he is the one who scores all the goals. We hope we can keep him fit and with us for a long time.
