Arsene Wenger on the performance of Oxlade-Chamberlain, Frimpong and Coquelin

The Gunning Hawk - ForumArsene Wenger

Arsenal are out of the Carling Cup but positives can be taken from the game such as the brilliant performance of some of the young players.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, manager Arsene Wenger was full of praise for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as he explained that the Englishman looked like one who could deliver something “special” against Manchester City with the manager adding that the youngster is moving forward and showing consistency.

And on the midfield duo of Emmanuel Frimpong and Francis Coquelin, the Arsenal boss declared that the two youngsters did well as they fought extremely hard against Roberto Mancini’s tough and experienced midfield.

After the game, the manager said:

[On the performance of Oxlade-Chamberlain] We lacked a little bit of experience to be more decisive in the final third but Chamberlain looked the whole night like he could deliver something special.

He has shown already tonight that he has moved forward, considering where he was in the last two months. He has improved a lot already.

The experience tonight shows that it’s good sometimes to be positive and as well patient.

I was very patient with him until now and I feel that it is important sometimes that you hold them back a little bit and keep them on the training ground. He has shown that he has improved a lot.

He has surprised me by the consistency of this game. You pushed him off the ball easily two months ago but tonight you could see that his resistance in the challenges, his strength in the duels, is there. That is of course very important at the top level.

[The midfield battle?] I feel in midfield Frimpong did well, Coquelin did well, we battled very hard in there. We were mobile, strong in the fight, we did very well I must say.

Sometimes we lacked a little bit of creativity in the final third, especially in the last 20 minutes when I felt there was plenty of room to give them big problems and we missed sometimes the experience in the final ball.

But I cannot fault the team, they have shown heart, quality and desire. At the end of the day it is frustrating for the players that they are not rewarded.

  • Simon says:

Coq played a great game but should have been taken off before his defensive mistake cost us the goal. Frimpong went off at him after the goal and was right to do so – when City broke Frimpong can be seen shouting at him and pointing to where he needed to be. Coq took far too long to react. It may have been fatigue. Whatever the reason it was very disappointing. Frimpong had been on the whole game yet he was able to get back.

Coq otherwise played an impressive game. I think that lapse explains why Wenger doesn’t play him more.

    • Dhaval says:

More than anything it was a collective mistake. Wasn’t a fault of an individual. He tried getting back but was too late for that. Hopefully won’t commit such mistake again.

P.S. You learn about such mistakes only when you play week in week out. He needs to play. And if some one really should go on loan the it is him. The position we’d expect him to play is where Arteta plays right now, but beside Arteta there are Diaby and Wilshere who can fill in that place. So instead of Pong it should be Le Coq who should go out on a loan.

  • summerbreez says:

We put up a great game and the game lost its solidity when the subs were introduced i was shocked at taking chamberlain and park off i thought gervenio should have came in for shmacha it should have done the trick we played very well i am proud well done Arsenal

  • Pmjgunz7 says:

Coquelin and Frimpong has shown every blood thirsty gunner why we shouldn’t buy M’vila, Scott Parker or any defensive midfielder.
But i hope Wenger has seen d fact that we need to sell off Ashavin n Chamahk, and buy a goal machine ( not Podoski for christ sake) someone like Soldado, papae cisse, Loic Remy etc. I wont even mind resignin Henry for 3months as long as he still has his accuracy boots on. Infact i’ll rather have Benik Afobe and Wattz in front rather than those two.
Chamberlain is 7x better than Arshavin, he has more pace, gives in more work rate and as such deserves more playin time. Pls wenger favour useless and lazy experience, over efficent and zealous youths.
All Arsenal needs now is fine tuning, buy a left back n push Santos to the upfront (to replace AA), throw off Chamahk and buy a STRIKER ( the type that wont be SCARCED to compete with RVP). Finally Benayoun and Arteta are dying Star, bring in Goetze and lets watch Arsenal DOMINATE the world for Decades.

  • gooner 11 says:

well, atleast it serves as a great experience and important lessons for the youngsters.. hopefully the next time they are given the chance, they can take it and justify their talent..

  • Pat Rice says:

When I watched those Young Guns play I was both excited and angry at the same time…..

I was excited because there is something about Frimpong, Coquelin, Ignasi, AOC, Miyaichi, Ozyakup in the same squad as Ramsey, Wilshere, Szscesny, Walcott, Jenkinson, Song, Vermaelen, Koscienly and RVP, that makes me say Arsenal have a bright future.

But I was angry because I remembered he have a Board filled with greed and lack of ambition, so chances are half those players will leave, just like the Fabregas, Na$ri era of young guns.

  • Englishmik says:

To Give RVP a break, anybody thought about Gervinho on left Walcot on Right and Oxade- Chamberlain down the middle. Would give a few teams a nightmare before the game.

    • hingo says:

Or what about Walcott down middle and AOC and Gervinho on flanks? Could work if Walcott does that Henry thing of pulling out left and dragging opposition centre backs out of position

  • EIE says:

Great performance last night, really proud of the boys, Kos, Ox & Coq the stand out performers. The atmosphere was the best for a long while too, apart from the result a good night all round.

  • Rookie says:

Dont care if we lost, we have some of the brightest youngsters in england. I would be upset usually, but after a performances like that in midfield, Im fine.
Man City Squad- 50m to 100m pounds
    Arsenal Squad- 20 pounds
And we still gave them a match

  • Mike says:

These youth have gone far since the 8-2, kept strong & held off the all-starred team. Wenger building a selfless team & seems that the youth are in it for the long haul. Also, good that we lost, gives Wenger more reasons to buy in January.

  • winn says:

I was wondering why Theo lately has stepped up a bit, …..Now i know why.

    • gooner 11 says:

when you can feel the Ox breathing right under your neck, the only thing that can save you is the form of your life…

  • Francis Angrey says:

Couldn’t watch the match last night but from what I’ve read so far, the boys put up a good show. Let them keep it up.

  • wengers straightjacket says:

the personnel last night showed the good and disasterous side of wenger’s recent acquisitions. Le coq shows flashes of real effective and skillful midfield play, frimpong is going to be awesome and has a great winning mentlity. Chamberlain for me has already shown what he is capable of,,,,the natural balance and skill he has is impossible to train for…you either have it or you dont..and he has it!!!.Koscienly ius getting better and better, so a good buy i think.chamakh, fabianski and squillacci are useless at this level and it still amazes me as to how this revered and globally respected manager has ever had trust and belief in these players.Struggling to make an impact are park, miguel and djourou and for me gervinho is a good squad player but no more, same as for benayoun.
The team did well overall, but unlike wenger i dont think we deserved to win…a draw would have been a fair result, city would have upped a gear had we scored anyway.
The future looks bright for arsenal…lets hope the management dont screw it up and players start leaving…again

  • Matt says:

finally know what is killing Arsenal at home…the stewards. Was at the game last night and I must say I have never seen anything like it. The atmosphere was really good and hotting up, people were standing and belting out songs about nasri, wembley etc. Then we were told to sit down. Absolutley ridiculous. If people are not comfortable standing for the whole game or can’t stand for the whole game, then either stay at home or buy a disabled seat. Never seen anything like it, there isn’t a supporter at the Britannia stadium that sits down, our home fans are becoming a laughing stock because of the terrible atmosphere and the stewards seem only concerned with trying to make US, the ones who pay their wages, unhappy. Disgraceful. Anyway the game itself, for me the effort from the boys was absolute superb and deserved the clap off at the end for the majority who stayed. Frimpong and AOC were world class, and played anyone City bought for ££££ off the park. We were very unlucky to come away from this with a loss. I do feel however if we had a decent back-up to RVP then we would have comfortably won this game. Chamakh was terrible yet again and I feel his time has come to now leave, hopefully in January. The same for Arshavin, not interested in the team. I think this really does bode well for the future though, a midfield with Ramsey, Song, Wilshere, Frimpong and Coquelin will be a force to be reckoned with. Come on you Gunners

    • Mills says:

Mate I would give you a 1000 thumbs up if I could

  • emma says:

Great gunners! though we lost, but the boys were outstanding. with all the expensive pack, our boys were above par. thumb up to the reserve. a van persie like striker yesterday would have made the difference. more reasons why Arsenal should hurry to get Podolski.

  • Scott (USA) says:

The Young guns were very impressive against Man City. I was sad to see the counter in the end that beat us but it doesn’t take away what is very obvious to anyone watching. Arsenal have some great talent coming through the ranks. Hopefully we will keep them in the future. Wenger needs to buy a striker in Jan.(Soldado?)

  • Rokabox says:

Lads, Benayoun was awful, he didn’t make any effective pass and his control of the ball was horrendous. Any positive from him was largely from what he used to be when he was @ Liverpool, no wonder Chelsea let him out on loan to us. The guy was useless and he should have been subbed
