Arsenal midfielder Yossi Benayoun admitted that the Gunners “forgot to defend” when they conceded the only goal of the game against Manchester City.
Speaking to Arsenal Player, the Israel International explained that the players should have been more careful in the last part of the game as they completely forgot to take care of the defensive side of the pitch allowing the Citizens to counter attach and find the winning goal in the 83rd minute of the game.
The 31-year old also explained that the Gunners were bitterly disappointed to crash out of the competition as it was a golden opportunity for players who usually sit on the bench to show how good they are and eventually secure a place in the manager’s starting eleven.
The midfielder concluded by praising the young players who did so well on the night, including midfielders Emmanuel Frimpong and Francis Coquelin as well as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, one with a bright future at Arsenal, according to the veteran.
After the game, Benayoun said:
Man City didn’t play better than us but in the end we made a mistake from our corner. They have the players with a lot of quality to win the game.
We wanted to win, sometimes you get excited. We wanted to win the game and we were controlling the game. There was a corner, we forgot to defend and they scored – it was a shame.
We wanted to get to the semi-final, any trophy will be great and if you feel that if you win this game then it’s the semi-final, two legs, anything can happen.
And of course it would have been good for the players who play less, who get less opportunities in the League and the Champions League.
We now have to work hard to try and show that we deserve more opportunities with the first team.
I think in the Carling Cup games you see a lot of young players coming in, doing their best and I think a few of them showed that they have a bright future for Arsenal.
[Emmanuel] Frimpong played with a lot of confidence and spirit. Also, he had a partner like Francis [Coquelin] in midfield who was very good for him and they controlled it.
[Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain?] He created most of our chances, went in a few one against one, was confident and did very well, surely has a bright future with Arsenal.
