Club History
The game of football has come a long way since it`s early beginnings in the late nineteenth century. However, it was not until the mid 1950s that football in Europe clammed the interest of football supporters. In 1955 a proposal was put in place to invite the champions of Europe`s football leagues to take part in a Europe wide competition. The following year would see the start of a competition which attracts teams from the major leagues such as the Premiership, Serie A in Italy, the French League, Ligue 1, the German Bundeslige and Spanish La Ligue. Famous names such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Juventus, Olympique, Lyonnais and Arsenal have all played their part in making the European Champions League many people`s final highlight of the season.
Arsenal began their life in 1886 and were, throughout the 1930s the dominant team of the age, winning five League Championships and two FA Cups. Managed by the legendary Herbert Chapman, the Gunners were the first major force in English football. The years following the Second World War were lean times for Arsenal, however in 1970/71 they became only the second team in the 20th Century to win the League and FA Cup double.
In the past twenty years, Arsenal have become one of the top four of English football, together with Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool, and have become only one of four clubs to win the Premiership since it began in 1992.
The return of one of their former players, George Graham, in 1986, opened a period of success for the club. Arsenal won the League Cup in 1986/87, and the following season win one of the most dramatic Premiership titles ever by beating Liverpool in the last minute of the game at Liverpool, their main title contenders. Another league title was won in 1990/92, followed by the League and FA Cup double in 1992/93 and the following season, 1993/94, The Gunners won the European Cup Winners Cup.
n 1996, Arsenal appointed Arsene Wenger and a further period of success began. Wenger brought a fresh approach to the English game as well as adding several foreign players to the squad. A second league and cup double was won in 1997/98 and a third in 2001/02. In 2003/04 they became the first Premiership team to go the whole season without losing a game. Arsenal have reached the final of the European Champions League, losing to Barcelona in the final.
The Gunners now play their matches at the Emirates Stadium in London. Famous names such as Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp have displayed their creative football at the stadium. The stadium can be reached conveniently from nearby tube stations. Alternatively, public transport is recommended as parking spaces may be limited on match days. There are a range of hotels near the ground, such as the Beaconsfield, the Costello Palace and the Pembury Hotel. These hotels are ideally situated for London`s attractions.
